Irish consumers are being targeted by increasingly sophisticated online scams, according to a new set of case studies released by the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC). The warning comes as Black Friday and Cyber Monday kick off the busiest shopping period of the year, creating prime opportunities for scammers to steal from unsuspecting shoppers. With recent research revealing that almost 40% surveyed expect to make a purchase in the Black Friday/Cyber Monday sales, the CCPC is advising consumers to be extra vigilant and to stop and think before rushing into making a purchase. The case studies, which date between November 2024 and August 2025, reveal losses ranging from €42 to €20,000 and highlight the wide range of methods used to scam consumers. These include fake websites, phishing emails, fraudulent job offers, rental accommodation scams, and investment fraud. The CCPC is warning consumers to be especially wary of ads on social media, as scammers are using convincing clones of trusted websites and fake local shops to trick shoppers. To stay safe, always purchase through the retailer's official website or app rather than clicking on the social media link. Stop, search and stay safe To help consumers shop safely during the peak shopping season, the CCPC advises following these three simple steps: Stop: Scammers often create urgency to pressure quick decisions. If something feels off or too good to be true, stop and think before engaging further. Search: Remember that logos, "about us" pages and imagery on websites can be fabricated. Always take a minute to check sites like Trustpilot or Reddit for independent reviews. Stay safe: Watch out for common red flags, including unusually large discounts - "up to 80% off", unfamiliar websites, recently created social media profiles, and all five-star reviews. Always use a credit card, debit card or trusted payment provider, rather than a direct bank transfer. Grainne Griffin, director of communications at the CCPC, said: "As the busiest shopping season of the year kicks off, it's important that consumers avoid rushing into online purchases and transactions. Online scams have become more and more sophisticated, using convincing images and stories and carefully tailoring their ads to seem like they're a trustworthy business. "For the sake of your finances and your safety, take care when shopping online. Don't let tactics like time-sensitive offers or countdown clocks pressure you into making a decision you might regret. "Do your research, take your time, and don't take risks, no matter how tempting the deal - you can lose an awful lot of money in just a few clicks. Always use a credit card, debit card or trusted payment provider like PayPal, rather than a direct bank transfer." What to do if you've been scammed when shopping online If you think you've been scammed, contact your bank or payment provider immediately. You may be able to initiate a chargeback and get your money back, and you may need to freeze your card to prevent further money being taken. An Garda Síochána are responsible for pursuing scam operators, so contact your local Garda office and report it. Klearcom, a global leader in AI-driven IVR and telecom testing, has ranked third in Deloitte's list of the fastest growing technology companies across the island of Ireland. The Waterford-based company, who recently secured an investment from London-based private equity firm, Synova, received its official listing at this year's Technology Fast 50 Awards. The event took place in the Round Room at the Mansion House in Dublin. The Technology Fast 50, running since 1999, is one of Ireland's most prestigious technology award programmes and celebrates innovation and entrepreneurship within the industry. At last year's ceremony, Klearcom received the Rising Star accolade in honour of their promising growth trajectory and future potential. This year represents a major milestone in the company's journey, driven by its expanding market share in the IVR sector and the establishment of its physical base within the US. Klearcom specialises in AI-powered contact centre testing solutions, identifying and resolving issues in telecoms infrastructure for multinational companies such as Pfizer, Google, and Mastercard. Building on this year's success, the company is embarking on ambitious expansion plans for 2026 and are actively recruiting across the entire organisation. This includes senior leadership roles such as Chief Revenue Officer (CRO), Chief Product Officer (CPO), Head of Engineering, as well as multiple roles across the sales department. Speaking about the company's official ranking, Liam Dunne, CEO and Co-Founder, Klearcom, said: "Our ranking of third on the Technology Fast 50 list is a standout highlight to what has been an exceptional year for Klearcom. We want to take a moment to thank Deloitte for this honour and our entire team for being instrumental to our success. "Following our partnership with Synova, we are incredibly excited to deliver on our vision for 2026. As we continue to scale globally, we are eager to welcome new talent across the organisation and invite prospective candidates to join our rapidly growing team. "Fuelled by this year's achievements, we look forward to reinforcing our position as a market leader in this space and achieve even greater heights in 2026 and the years ahead." LISA is a groundbreaking mission, led by the European Space Agency (ESA) in collaboration with NASA, to develop the largest observatory ever built. It consists of three satellites in a triangular formation, each 2.5 million kilometres apart, and aims to detect gravitational waves. Gravitational waves are formed by extreme cosmic events such as the merger of black holes and create ripples in the fabric of space-time. LISA stands for Laser Interferometer Space Antenna. Each satellite will emit a laser towards the other two and measure tiny changes in the distance between satellites due to gravitational waves. Despite the enormous distance between the satellites (six times the distance from the Earth to the Moon), the sophisticated optical instruments on board can pick up changes smaller than the size of a helium atom and hence detect gravitational waves. The results from the mission will shed light on what happens when black holes collide and provide insight into the origins of the universe, immediately after the Big Bang. Two Galway-based companies, ATG Innovation and EireComposites, will play key roles in the LISA mission. ATG will design the central tube (the chassis of the satellite) based on its patented lightweight, high-stiffness, grid-stiffened structural architecture, and EireComposites will manufacture and assemble the structure. This work will encompass everything from the manufacture of test components and structural assemblies to autoclave curing, bonding, and precision machining. Detailed inspections will be carried out to make sure each part meets strict aerospace standards, using non-destructive testing and dimensional checks throughout the build. By combining advanced computational modelling, hands-on manufacturing, and meticulous quality control, the partners will deliver reliable, high-performance structures that are central to the success of the LISA project. Jacob Pasqualotto, Director of Operations at ATG Engineering, commented, "Leading the Irish contribution to LISA alongside OHB and ÉireComposites is a privilege and a responsibility we embrace with pride. This mission takes gravitational-wave astronomy beyond Earth, extending our reach into the vast low-frequency universe where supermassive black holes and cosmic giants reveal their secrets. For us, this is more than engineering; it is Ireland's signature on the future of astrophysics. Tomas Flanagan, CEO of ÉireComposites, added, "Nearly everything we know about the universe comes from telescopes; LISA provides a completely different approach by focusing on gravitational waves instead of light. It's hard to believe that we'll be making structural carbon-fibre components for the largest machine that humanity has ever built and that we will be seeking evidence to support Einstein's general theory of relativity. The fact that we've been chosen by ESA to partner with ATG for this mission is a huge endorsement of EireComposites, ATG and the Irish Space industry in general." Storm Technology, a Littlefish company, has announced survey findings which reveal that 27% of IT leaders are concerned about their ability to detect deepfake attacks over the next 12 months. This concern was felt by more respondents in larger enterprises (33%) than SMBs (23%). The research - conducted by Censuswide and involving 200 IT decision-makers and leaders across Ireland and the UK (100 in each market) - found that the biggest concerns around AI and security over the next year are data breaches (34%), data protection (33%), and increased risk of adversarial or cyber-attacks (31%). Meanwhile, a quarter (25%) consider shadow AI (use of unsanctioned or unpermitted tools) among their biggest concerns. This is not necessarily surprising given that half of respondents (50%) know that people in their organisation are using such tools and some 55% admitted to using unsanctioned or unpermitted tools themselves. Forty-two per cent of IT leaders also opined that company data is not safe for input into these platforms. Perhaps exacerbating this issue, just 60% of companies have been specific about which AI tools are sanctioned or permitted. More broadly, over a fifth (21%) of IT leaders do not have a high degree of trust in AI tools and almost a third (32%) of companies do not have a strategy in place to address any AI risks that arise. The research showed that 79% of IT leaders in Ireland and the UK agree their organisation needs to focus more on the regulation of AI tools and 28% do not believe their governance around AI tools is adequate. This rose to more than a third (35%) among Irish respondents. When it comes to AI and data, 24% of IT leaders do not think their business data is ready for AI, with a similar proportion (23%) of the opinion that that their data governance policies are not robust enough to support secure AI adoption. This could explain why 78% believe a data readiness project is required to ensure successful AI adoption in their company. Sean Tickle, Cyber Services Director, Littlefish, said: "AI is rapidly reshaping the enterprise landscape, but the speed of adoption is outpacing the maturity of governance. When nearly a third of organisations lack a strategy to manage AI risk, and over half of IT leaders admit to using unsanctioned tools, it's clear that shadow AI isn't just a user issue - it's a leadership one. "Deepfake threats, data governance gaps, and a lack of trust in AI platforms are converging into a perfect storm. To stay secure and competitive, businesses must invest in visibility, policy clarity, and data readiness - because without those, AI becomes a liability, not a differentiator." See more stories here. The largest student start-up programme in the country has been launched today in its 24th year. The Student Enterprise Programme, an initiative of the Local Enterprise Offices, has seen over 500,000 students take part since it began. The Student Enterprise Programme, which is funded by the Government of Ireland through Enterprise Ireland and delivered by the 31 Local Enterprise Offices in local authorities throughout the country, saw over 30,000 students from almost 500 secondary schools across the country take part in 2024/2025. Participating students will compete across three categories, Junior (1st year), Intermediate (2nd and 3rd year) and Senior (4th, 5th and 6th year, LVA, LCA and Youth Outreach). Each student enterprise is challenged with creating, setting up and running their own business, which must show viable sales of their service or product. The best student start-ups from each school will then progress to county and regional finals. Students will then be chosen to be selected for the National Finals on the 7th May, where the Student Enterprise of the Year for 2026 will be named, along with winners across the other categories. Gareth Evans, Chair of the Enterprise Education Committee, Local Enterprise Offices, said, "The Student Enterprise Programme really highlights the appetite for entrepreneurship within our school system. In recent years, we have seen a steady increase in participation year on year. There have been some amazing start-ups come out of Ireland, punching well above their weight internationally, and I think this is helping to inspire the next generation of entrepreneurs here. "Irrespective of what these students go on to do in their lives they will have learned some invaluable skills taking part in this programme that will help them in their future careers. We're looking forward to seeing what the Student Enterprise Programme Class of 2026 put forward!" The second Alumni Achievement Award for the Student Enterprise Programme will also be handed out in May. The award celebrates former programme participants who have gone on to achieve exceptional success in business. The inaugural award went to sisters Kate and Annie Madden from Fenu Health. Participants in the Student Enterprise Programme in 2016, the company creates supplements for equine health and their customers include five royal families. This year will also see a new award with a Start-Up Stories Competition. This competition is for Junior Cycle students only, and it asks them to imagine themselves as an entrepreneur at a future stage of their lives, having set up a business. Students are asked to write their fictitious story of how they became an entrepreneur, came up with their idea, got funding, overcame obstacles, lessons learned and skills they needed. The objective is to get students thinking and developing ideas around entrepreneurship. The Student Enterprise of the Year for 2025 was "Cannon PC" from Clonkeen College, Dun Laoghaire in County Dublin. The start-up, created by student Jack Cannon, built upcycled high-speed gaming PCs from old PCs being disposed of in office clear-outs and for general sale online. Cannon PC achieved €40,000 in sales while also saving 1,000 kg of e-waste every year. For more information on the programme, visit https://www.studententerprise.ie/. Rugby fans and supporters at the recent South Africa versus Ireland game last weekend consumed over 2,000 GB of data, the equivalent of two million minutes of music streaming, according to Vodafone Ireland. The surge in data was driven by video recording, sharing and live streaming. Over 15,000 calls were made over the course of match-day - almost one third of the stadium made a phone call. During the Quilter Autumn Internationals, data usage at the stadium reflected strong engagement with fans attending the Japan game consuming almost 1,740 GB and Australia 1,771 GB. The fans at the South Africa game came in with the highest usage. Connectivity demand extended beyond rugby. At this summer's concerts featuring Lana Del Rey and Dua Lipa, attendees consumed 5,137 GB of data across two nights. On the Lana Del Rey night alone, usage reached 2,633 GB, roughly the equivalent of ten years of nonstop podcast listening. Vodafone Ireland invests over €100 million annually in network improvements across Ireland, including upgrades at the Aviva Stadium which focus on delivering uninterrupted mobile and 5G coverage. To meet growing demand, Vodafone Ireland has also implemented network enhancements at Aviva Stadium as part of its nationwide investment program. These include: Deploying 5G capacity and spectrum utilisation in busy sectors. Optimising radios and backhaul for peak-hour demand. Continuous monitoring to adjust parameters during live events. Commenting on the figures, Sheila Kavanagh, Director of Vodafone Networks Ireland, said: "The data and voice activity we've seen at the Aviva Stadium this year shows just how essential reliable connectivity is for sports fans and music lovers. Over the course of the South Africa match-day alone, over 15,000 calls were made alongside significant data usage. Our ongoing investment, including 5G upgrades in the Aviva and throughout the country, ensures we can meet this demand and keep people connected during the biggest and most memorable moments." Investment also supported major summer festivals and cultural gatherings across Ireland. Temporary network sites and spectrum optimisation were deployed at events such as Flavours of Fingal, Bord Bia Bloom, Kaleidoscope, All Together Now and Electric Picnic where attendees relied heavily on navigation, social media, and streaming apps. Across these events, Vodafone Ireland managed over 220 TB of data, the equivalent of streaming 73 million songs! As sponsor of Irish Rugby, Vodafone marked the autumn series with a creative activation in Dublin city centre. A mural by artist KinMx on Chatham Row, developed in partnership with Carat, The Collectiv and Rockshot, celebrated the sport and its supporters. See more stories here. Auxilion, the leading Irish IT managed services provider, has announced the results of its latest survey which reveals that almost a third (31%) of office workers in Ireland use their work device for personal use. The survey of 1,000 office workers in Ireland was conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Auxilion and HPE. The research identifies several risky behaviours among office workers that has the potential to put cybersecurity at risk. One common behaviour includes clicking on a suspicious link or email at work, cited by 32% of respondents. One in five (22%) also admitted to using public wi-fi to access sensitive company documents. Over a quarter (26%) have input sensitive company or customer data into an Artificial Intelligence (AI) tool. In addition, a third (33%) have used unauthorised tools to get their work done faster. Despite these behaviours, the majority of office workers (73%) are confident in their ability to spot a potential cyber threat. Password protection was also highlighted as an area for concern, with almost a fifth (19%) of office workers admitting to sharing their work password with friends and family. A further 14% have used the same password for both work and personal accounts. While over half of respondents (54%) feel confident in their password security, one in ten do not. As such, it may come as no surprise that 23% organisations have suffered a cybersecurity breach in the last 12 months. This was highest among the public sector at 28%. In addition, 23% of office workers admitted that they did not report a known security breach (i.e. where a cybersecurity attack was successful). With the prevalence of high-risk behaviours among office workers, over half (55%) of companies have run simulated phishing tests to raise awareness about cybersecurity. Despite this, a quarter (25%) of respondents believe their organisation does not have adequate security and data loss prevention measures in place. A third (32%) of office workers also revealed they do not receive regular cybersecurity training from their employer. Martin Patterson, Head of Innovation, Auxilion said: "While it's unsurprising that many employees use work devices for personal tasks, our survey highlights a far greater concern - the ease with which everyday actions, such as opening a link in an email or using AI tools, can expose organisations to security risks. "Human behaviour remains one of the biggest vulnerabilities in cybersecurity. That's why investing in ongoing training and building a culture of awareness are just as important as having the right technology in place. By equipping employees with the knowledge to spot and avoid potential threats, businesses can strengthen their first line of defence." See more stories here. AI One, the enterprise context management platform that helps organisations give AI the business context it needs to make decisions, has announced it has raised $11 million in total funding. The round includes $7 million in Series A funding with participation from Vestigo Ventures and existing investors. AI One's platform enables large organisations to transform their operations by connecting directly to SaaS platforms like Salesforce and Workday, as well as on-premise and legacy systems, extracting context from fragmented data, and delivering measurable outcomes in weeks, not years. AI One addresses a problem that's become increasingly visible as companies try to move beyond pilots: AI models don't understand the context of the businesses they're deployed in. Despite billions spent on data infrastructure, most enterprises still operate across disconnected systems that make it nearly impossible for AI to make informed decisions. AI One tackles this with a new class of technology called Enterprise Context Management (ECM), which connects directly to existing systems to interpret how data, processes, and policies relate across the organisation. By managing context safely and consistently, the platform enables companies to automate complex workflows and decision-making without costly data migrations or replatforming. It delivers results in as little as 10 weeks and reduces operating costs by up to 80% AI One was founded in 2024 by Conor Twomey and Fergus Keenan, who spent over 15 years in enterprise data and analytics, and saw the pitfalls of large enterprises over-investing in expensive infrastructure overhauls to drive innovation. "Most companies are brute-forcing AI into workflows by endlessly rewriting generic prompts and connectors - a slow, brittle process that's impossible to scale," says Conor Twomey, Co-founder & CEO at AI One. "AI can only perform as well as the context it understands. We created AI One to give enterprises control over that context so their AI isn't guessing, it's operating with understanding." Since its inception, AI One has already delivered measurable results for its clients: A global bank cut reconciliation errors by 90% in four months, saving millions annually and reducing manual review from 400,000 cases to under 5,000. A healthcare provider reduced member onboarding time from 15 days to 3 days, accelerating revenue recognition and patient access. An insurance group improved its straight-through processing rate from 89% to 97%, shortening claims cycles and boosting customer satisfaction. "AI One is solving one of the hardest problems in enterprise AI: perception," said Mark Casady, General Partner at Vestigo Ventures. "The platform's ability to activate enterprise context without requiring data migration or replatforming is a breakthrough. It turns AI from a concept into measurable business impact in record time." AI One intends to use the funding to expand its customer base, targeting Fortune 500 businesses in financial services, energy, healthcare, insurance, and private equity, and continue to build its platform. The team has grown to 20 employees since inception with recent hires across GTM, platform, and field engineering. See more stories here. Ekco, one of Europe's leading security-first managed service providers, has announced the opening of its new headquarters, featuring a state-of-the-art Security Operations Centre (SOC), in Dublin's Grand Canal Dock. The opening comes as Ekco is targeting revenues exceeding €100 million in Ireland and €200 million globally by year-end 2025. Together, the new HQ and SOC will enable Ekco to accelerate its growth in Ireland, boost cyber resilience for businesses, and deliver an enhanced offering to customers. This is Ekco's third global SOC and builds on the success of its existing cybersecurity facilities in the UK and Malaysia. It will help to meet growing customer demand for advanced cybersecurity products and services. The SOC will combine advanced threat detection capabilities with Ekco's expert analysts to identify and respond to threats quickly, and protect businesses from evolving cyber risks. It will also support compliance and enable businesses to align with regulatory requirements, while safeguarding personal and company information. The SOC can automatically take action when serious threats are detected, including isolating affected devices without the need for manual intervention, helping to ensure faster protection. Ekco's incident response team has also grown in order to respond to security incidents more effectively, with responses to potential threats increasing by more than 200% over thepast six months. Following a number of strategic acquisitions in Ireland - amounting to seven in the last two years - the new HQ will provide a central hub for Ekco's approximately 500 employees in Ireland. In addition, the new HQ provides boosted capacity and will enable the company to expand its customer base in Ireland, with plans to increase the number of customers by 15% in 2026. This will include growth in the public, finance, legal, and professional services sectors. Ekco is also on a path of aggressive global growth and is continuing to expand in key international markets including the UK, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the U.S. Steve MacNicholas, CEO Ireland, Ekco, said: "The opening of our new Dublin headquarters signifies our commitment to safeguarding businesses and driving consistent growth for Ekco in Ireland. We are on an exciting acquisition path, supplemented by planned organic growth, and this new hub will provide a central location for employees to collaborate. Furthermore, as our team continues to grow internationally, this state-of-the-art facility cements our commitment to Ireland as a leader in cybersecurity. "The launch of our third SOC represents a significant step for our business as we look to meet the ever-increasing demand for future-ready cybersecurity services. This will enable us to deliver an enhanced service to our customers, ultimately helping businesses to stay ahead of evolving cyber threats, and provide our solutions to an increased client base." Ahead of the busiest retail weeks of the year, including Black Friday, Cyber Monday and the Christmas shopping period, Bank of Ireland is advising consumers to remain vigilant of purchase scams. Recent analysis by Bank of Ireland's Fraud team revealed that purchase scam cases rose by 47% in the first half of 2025 when compared to the final six months of 2024. The monetary value of losses associated with these scam cases rose by 16%, with consumers being defrauded on items ranging from cosmetics to electronics, garden tools to concert tickets. Online purchases tend to rise in the second half of the year, as Bank of Ireland card spending analysis reveals that online outlay was higher on cosmetics (+34%), and electrical goods (+39%) between July and December 2024 when compared to the first six months of 2025. This consumer trend is emphasised further with online clothes shopping spend 22% higher in the second six months of 2024 when compared to the first half of 2025, as demand for the latest fashions increases as the year draws to a close. Given these spending pattern hikes it is not surprising that many consumers will be looking to grab an on-trend beauty product, the latest fashion item or a tech bargain over the coming weeks. With purchasing overall reaching peak levels, fraudsters take advantage of the increased online retail traffic, targeting these key gifting categories including electronics, beauty products and clothing. They are highly skilled at creating fake websites that appear genuine, displaying the latest "styles" at "keen" prices to lure people into purchasing top-end clothing at seemingly giveaway rates. Once the payment is transferred, the scam is complete and the seller usually cuts all contact, and the product doesn't arrive. Bank of Ireland's advice to customers when making a purchase during the busy retail period: Before paying in full, ensure you have enough information about the item, and where possible, view it in person. Beware of pop-up ads on your social media feed or ads on online market places (fraudsters can pay to have their ads appear there). Go directly to the online shopping site by typing the web address into your web browser. Links in unsolicited emails or on social media are not always safe and should be avoided. Research and read trusted reviews to check the site and the seller are genuine. Try and pay by debit or credit card, as this could give you additional protection such as chargeback claims. Nicola Sadlier, Head of Fraud, Bank of Ireland said: "With Black Friday, Cyber Monday and Christmas fast-approaching fraudsters will be redoubling their efforts to target people. It's only natural that consumers will be on the lookout to snap up the latest bargains over the coming weeks, but our advice continues to be that if it looks too good to be true, then it probably is. The 47% rise in purchase scams in the first half of this year underlines the need for people to stay vigilant, to buy from trusted outlets and websites, and to avoid complacency when shopping online or in person." Anyone suspecting they have been a victim of fraud should contact their bank immediately so that the bank can try to stop the fraud, and try to recover the funds. Bank of Ireland customers can call the Fraud Team 24/7 on the Freephone line 1800 946 764. See more stories here. Technology to improve rowing athletes' performances, zero-waste clothing design, and a safer and more comfortable Intrauterine Device (IUD) were among the start-ups highlighted at this year's University College Cork's IGNITE Autumn Showcase. The third-level graduates supported by the university's flagship incubation programme began working on their ideas this year and are hoping to develop them into a company with the assistance of IGNITE. The 2025 Autumn Showcase follows IGNITE's recent success in securing a €1 million Higher Education Authority (HEA) Award for exemplary performance and impact. The HEA evaluated Impact Assessment Case Studies, which were submitted by higher education institutions earlier this year. IGNITE emerged as one of five winning submissions. IGNITE is based at UCC and is open to anyone who has graduated from a third-level institution in recent years and has the passion and ambition to work on an idea that has the potential for economic, environmental or social impact. The annual showcase gives the IGNITE participants an opportunity to network with other entrepreneurs and potential investors. IGNITE has supported nearly 250 founders since it was established in 2011. The programme is a joint initiative by Cork City Council, Cork County Council, the Local Enterprise Offices of Cork City, South Cork and North and West Cork and University College Cork. Eamon Curtin, Director of IGNITE, said: "We are proud at IGNITE to support talented founders in developing their innovative business ideas into scalable and sustainable start-ups that deliver real social and economic value. The HEA Award is a testament to not only the great work carried out by our community of entrepreneurs, but also to the support provided to us by the Local Enterprise Offices, Cork County Council, Cork City Council and Bank of Ireland, without whom the programme would not be possible." Among the 14 start-ups currently supported by University College Cork's IGNITE Start-Up Incubation Programme are: Roteq - founded by Will Gunnarson and Sam O'Neill. Roteq empowers rowing athletes to reach their full potential by providing actionable insights into their performance. By processing data from a phone's built-in sensors, the programme delivers real-time performance metrics. These quantifiable metrics allow instant feedback and tracking of an athlete's technical and physiological progress on the water, making it easier than ever to achieve their goals. The Zero Waster - founded by Sarah O'Neill. Sarah is a designer whose work is grounded in the principles of regenerative design. With a deep-rooted respect for natural materials, traditional craftsmanship, and environmental responsibility, Sarah challenges the norms of the fashion industry through innovative reuse and transparency. Creating unique, wearable pieces from reclaimed and natural materials, showing that waste can be reimagined without compromising creativity or quality. Elithiya - founded by Isabelle Curran. Isabelle is a Product Design & Technology graduate from the University of Limerick and the founder of Elithiya, a women's health innovation focused on redesigning the intrauterine device (IUD) experience. Over the past year, she has collaborated with clinicians, FemTech founders, and patients worldwide to identify gaps in reproductive healthcare and develop a softer, more informed IUD insertion experience through redesigned tools and supportive digital technology. New research published by Repak has revealed that the Irish public will be more eco-conscious this Christmas. Almost 1 in 3 (30%) adults in Ireland are going to upcycle items to gift to a loved one and a similar amount (33%) will buy gifts that can have a second life to ensure that they last longer. Almost 4 in 5 (78%) shoppers see sustainability as an important factor when buying gifts, looking for products that are locally produced and whose packaging is recyclable. This eco-conscious mindset extends beyond gift giving, with almost half of households planning on reducing how much they spend on food and drink in a bid to cut back on waste. The days of buying mountains of wrapping paper are also over, with 57% opting to put presents in reusable or recyclable gift bags and over 4 in 10 (43%) planning on using wrapping paper that they have saved or newspaper to wrap gifts. Two thirds (66%) of the public are also planning on saving and storing gift packaging for next year. Local recycling centres are also set to see a spike in footfall after Christmas day, with two thirds (66%) of households planning to make a visit to dispose of waste. The Irish public is also getting creative with how they are giving their home a festive makeover, with approximately a third (30%) planning on using homemade decorations. Commenting on the research Repak CEO Zoe Kavanagh said: "Irish households are finding creative, thoughtful ways to make Christmas more eco-friendly, from upcycling gifts and reusing wrapping paper to cutting down on food waste. The fact that almost four in five shoppers are actively seeking locally produced and recyclable products speaks volumes about how engrained sustainability is becoming as part of our Christmas planning. At Repak, we want to make recycling simple, and we're here to help households recycle right this Christmas. Small actions like making sure all items are clean, dry and loose before recycling, make a big difference". Approximately 102,000 tonnes of packaging waste will be generated this Christmas and Repak is encouraging households to give back to the environment where possible. To make a real difference, shoppers should focus on recycling the packaging we use most in December: wrapping paper, boxes and mixed packaging. Repak's key Christmas recycling tips to follow are: The golden rule: Clean, Dry and Loose. Separate & flatten: Break down boxes; keep items loose (don't bag out items into each other) Waste in the right place: Check out repak.ie for guidance on what can go into your recycling bin this Christmas. Recycle it all: Cardboard, paper, all plastic, metals, tins and foil belong in your recycling bin. Veonet Ireland has announced the introduction of DR.NOON AI Software by HeartEye Diagnostics - an AI-powered retinal screening system capable of detecting early signs of cardiovascular and diabetic vascular risk from a single, non-invasive eye retinal scan. At a time of high waiting lists for ophthalmology and cardiology, at 53,000 and 45,000 patients respectfully, DR.NOON offers a powerful preventive tool that can identify risk before symptoms appear. Built on clinically validated deep learning algorithms, DR.NOON AI software analyses subtle vascular patterns in the retina to uncover early indications of systemic disease, including hypertension, atherosclerosis, and microvascular changes associated with diabetes. Retinal screening to detect eye disease It delivers instant, AI-driven reports that match the outperform traditional methods in five-year cardiovascular risk prediction. This will include actionable insights for patients, identifying key risk indicators with personalised recommendations for lifestyle modification and disease management. With World Diabetes Day approaching on 14 November, the timing could not be more relevant. Diabetes remains a leading cause of vision loss among working-age adults, yet early detection can prevent over 90% of diabetes-related blindness, as it enables faster referral, timely treatment, and improved long-term outcomes for patients. Regular visits to your optometrist and enrolling in the Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme are as important as attending your diabetic clinic appointments. This is due to the increased risk of glaucoma, cataract and diabetic eye disease as a result of a diabetes diagnosis. "Diabetes, heart disease and vision loss are deeply interconnected, yet often diagnosed too late," explains Dr. Farah Ibrahim, Consultant Ophthalmologist at Veonet Ireland. "DR.NOON AI software changes that landscape - predicting cardiovascular risk for patients through a simple eye scan. This is preventive care in action: faster insights, earlier intervention, and ultimately, fewer patients joining already overstretched waiting lists." To mark its Irish debut, DR.NOON will be showcased at Veonet Ireland's upcoming CPD-accredited event, The Future of Vision: Emerging Advancements in Diabetic Eye Disease, taking place in Cork this Thursday, 13 November. The session will bring together optometrists, nurses, pharmacists and ophthalmic technicians to explore developments in diabetes eye management & experience how AI-driven innovation can reshape multidisciplinary diabetic eye care. You can learn more about the event, and reserve your spot in person or online, here. About Veonet Ireland Part of Veonet, Europe's leading ophthalmology group, Veonet Ireland is dedicated to delivering world-class, affordable, and accessible specialist eye care across Ireland. Founded by renowned ophthalmologists who recognised the value of sharing expertise, networking, and best practices, Veonet continues to advance the quality of ophthalmic care for patients across Europe. Pure Telecom, Ireland's high-speed broadband and telecoms provider, has announced new results from its annual Connected Lives survey which reveal that almost a third (32%) of adults in Ireland have shared misinformation online before realising it was false. The growing issue of misinformation has led 87% of adults in Ireland to believe that it is now a serious problem facing modern society. The nationally representative survey of 1,001 adults in Ireland was conducted by Censuswide on behalf of Pure Telecom. It explores the role of misinformation in our everyday lives and how it shapes our experiences online. In total, almost half (46%) of adults in Ireland admit that misinformation has influenced their opinions or beliefs in the past. Two-thirds (69%) report that they have seen information online that they initially believed to be true, only to later realise that they had been misled. A similar proportion (65%) have observed misinformation being spread online by people they know. The research identifies AI as a contributing challenge in the era of misinformation. The majority of adults (81%) believe that AI-generated content, which includes the use of deepfakes, makes it harder to distinguish between 'real' and 'fake' news. Despite this, 56% say they can easily spot misinformation online and 72% are confident in their ability to fact check online news articles. But adults in Ireland also believe that social media companies must bear some of the responsibility, with 87% saying social media platforms should do more to prevent the spread of misinformation. The proliferation of misinformation online has led more than a third (37%) of adults to report that they don't trust mainstream online news sources to provide accurate information. The research found that one in 10 now turn to alternative news websites as one of their main sources of news. The most popular way adults in Ireland prefer to receive their news is on TV (46%). This is followed by social media (45%) and radio (35%). Most (79%) said Irish media is a top source for their news media, while 38% cited UK media and 34% cited US media. Paul Connell, CEO, Pure Telecom said: "While the majority of adults believe they can quickly identify misinformation, over-confidence could prove to be a person's greatest weakness. As misinformation becomes a defining challenge of our connected age, we must all apply a healthy degree of scepticism to what we see online to ensure we continue to reap the benefits of the online world. "The internet remains an incredible force for good, connecting communities, enabling learning, and driving innovation. As a provider that keeps people connected, Pure Telecom is passionate about bringing the value of the online world to people, households and businesses across Ireland." See more stories here. Venture capital funding into Irish technology SMEs rose by 8% to €207.9m in the third quarter of 2025, compared to the same period last year, according to the Irish Venture Capital Association Venture Pulse survey, published today in association with William Fry. Funding for the nine months to end September fell by 10% to €853.4m from €945.3m the previous year. The total number of deals in the same period fell from 153 to 135. "Third quarter data provided some relief following a dismal second quarter this year when funding fell to €112.6m, its lowest in ten years," commented Caroline Gaynor, chairperson, Irish Venture Capital Association. "Hopefully, we are starting to see some confidence and stability return to the market, but it remains a challenging time for early-stage companies." She added that following the blow to investor confidence caused by the United States' April 2nd tariff shocks, international investors had started to return to the market. International VC investment into Irish SMEs rose to €146.7 m in the current quarter compared to €69.5m in the second quarter of this year. She said that bright spots in the overall data were deals in the €1m- €5m range, which accounted for 30 out of the 39 transactions in this quarter. Transactions in the €1-€3m category rose by 35% to €35.6m compared to the same time last year. Deals in the €3-€5m range increased by 18% to €34.7m. However, funding in the €10m-€30m category fell by two-thirds to €26m while €5-€10m deals dropped by 74% to €13.5m, compared to the same quarter last year. There was better news in the €30m+ category where medtech company, ProVerum raised €62m, and AI machine learning firm, Nory raised €34m. Sarah-Jane Larkin, director general, IVCA, said that while there was some healthy activity, gaps remained in the third quarter, particularly in seed funding and transactions under €1m, both of which disappointed. Seed or first rounds fell by 30% to €23.4m from €33.5m, compared to the same quarter last year. Seed funding for the first nine months was down 31% to €88.3m from €127.2m last year. Despite this shortfall, the IVCA director general said: "The process for deploying the Government's €250m Enterprise Ireland Seed and Venture Capital Scheme 2025-29 is well underway. We are optimistic that the environment for very early stage Irish companies seeking first round funding will pick up in the first half of next year." Lifesciences was the most successful sector to date this year, raising funds of €361.6m or 42% of the total in the first nine months. This was followed by Cybersecurity at €136.3m (16%); AI and machine learning €97m (11%); Fintech €92.2m (11%) and Software €66.2m (8%). Keychain, the AI-powered manufacturing platform for the consumer packaged goods (CPG) industry, today announced a $10 million investment, including funding from W23 Global, the venture capital fund backed by five leading grocery retailers: Tesco, Ahold Delhaize, Woolworths Group, Empire Company Limited/Sobeys Inc., and Shoprite Group. The new funding supports the rollout of Keychain360, a next-generation supply chain and product management platform designed to help retailers develop and manage their private label brands more efficiently. Private label is becoming the fastest-growing segment in retail, yet product development has never been more complex. Consumers demand high-quality, affordable products, and retailers face mounting pressure to deliver them to market quickly. Keychain360 addresses these challenges head-on by unifying product design, sourcing, manufacturing, and compliance into one intelligent operating system. The result is faster launches, fewer bottlenecks, and stronger collaboration across supply chains. "With speed and transparency increasingly shaping the market, Keychain360 gives private label brands the advantage," said Oisin Hanrahan, CEO and Founder of Keychain. "Retailers can now manage their products end-to-end, innovate rapidly, and adapt to consumer preferences and regulatory changes, all within a single connected platform." Built specifically for retailers, Keychain360 delivers the same intelligence and precision that leading manufacturers rely on. By connecting every stage of the product lifecycle, it drives smarter decision-making and execution. A top-ten retailer recently used Keychain to launch more than 100 new products, reducing time-to-market by over two months and improving efficiency across its supplier network. "Keychain's AI-powered platform streamlines private label sourcing and enables retailers to bring quality private label products to customers faster and more efficiently," said Ingrid Maes, CEO and CIO of W23 Global. "As consumer expectations around health, sustainability, and value continue to rise, Keychain's solution helps retailers respond to these expectations effectively while ensuring compliance and product quality." Retailers don't have to wait for electric vehicles to cut emissions, operational efficiency can make a difference today. Black Friday keeps getting bigger every year. In the US alone, online sales will pass $10 billion over the weekend. Millions of parcels hit the roads, releasing millions of tonnes of CO in just a few days. And Ireland is no exception. The average Irish consumer is expected to spend €329 over the Black Friday period, with 63% of sales taking place online. That means a surge in home deliveries right across the country and a sharp rise in vehicle emissions as vans race to meet tight delivery windows (PWC). Sustainability strategies for Black Friday Some of the larger retailers are trying to get greener, but their plans are far off. IKEA has targets for electric deliveries by 2028, while Amazon and Currys aim for net zero by 2040. These goals are important, but they take time. Charging infrastructure, vehicle supply, and range limitations mean electric fleets cannot scale overnight. "The problem is that everyone's waiting for the future to fix the present," says David Walsh, CEO of SmartRoutes. "If retailers focused on using what they already have more efficiently, they could cut a fifth of delivery emissions almost overnight." Smarter planning can make a big difference. By consolidating stops, reducing duplicated routes, and grouping orders efficiently, retailers can reduce total distance driven by 15 to 20 percent. Over a peak week like Black Friday, that is the equivalent of taking more than 300,000 cars off the road. "The final mile is where a lot of the waste happens," Walsh adds. "You'll see two vans from the same retailer passing each other on the same street. That is completely avoidable." Consumers are also making more sustainable choices. Many choose to group deliveries if it means fewer trips. That creates pressure for retailers to reduce delivery emissions, not just focus on packaging or product sustainability. There is also a clear business case. Every mile avoided saves fuel and time. For large retailers, the savings can be significant, while still meeting customer expectations. Black Friday is the busiest delivery period of the year, but it also offers the biggest opportunity to make a measurable difference. Electrification will shape the future, but smarter delivery planning can reduce emissions today. She writes about trends in technology, logistics and last-mile delivery. Company bio: SmartRoutes is an Irish delivery operations platform focused on helping businesses plan efficient, lower-emission delivery routes. Its research explores ways retailers can reduce carbon emissions in logistics and the final mile. See more breaking stories here. We look at the new C7 from Flexispot, see more about the chair here. C7 office chair from Flexispot reviewed This chair works well straight out of the box. We did have to impress on our testers that it was not solely about the speed that they could move along the floor in it, nor how many times they could complete a rotation in it. Once these stress tests were completed, as they insisted they were, then they also enjoyed using it for more normal purposes. The chair is cosey, the back support is good and it integrates well with the E7 desk that we also reviewed this morning too. Overall the selection process and delivery was all good and straight forward too, so our team were happy with it, so it seems like a good addition to the office for the team, More about the Flexispot C7 office chair Why Choose the C7? We look at the new E7 Plus from Flexispot. See more about it here. E7 Plus from Flexispot reviewed The review team were happy to sit on the desks, the product specs suggest that you can, easily, stand on it too, as they say it can happily take 200kgs. The legs do seem able for it too, they are sturdy, solid, and probably could take a baby elephant, perhaps, maybe? While we didn't have any baby elephants lying around, the affordance of 200kgs is sufficient to be confident that, if you had to stand on the desk, to reach up for something, perhaps after removing shoes, it would work. It is good to have some solidity to your desk. Next up the look and feel of the desk. This is pretty good, looks good, like a mini glulam beam. Many mini pieces of wood, bonded together for greater solidity. One of our reviewers felt it was a bit sparse, but the others liked the minimalism of it's design too. It could be a question of you pay your money and you take your choice. Overall though it is solid, will weather well, last a long time, and is also large enough to accommodate everything you might need to work effectively and happily. Our team were happy to give it a thumbs up. More about the new E7 Plus 1.Four-legged design, steady loading Adopting scientific mechanical design, the force is evenly distributed at four points, which greatly improves the stability and is not easy to shake or tilt. Combined with high-strength carbon steel material and precision manufacturing process, it can reach a maximum load capacity of 200kg. Advanced Digital Keyboard: Equipped with an intuitive digital control panel, the E7 Plus allows users to easily set up to four memory height presets and includes a USB charging port for convenience. Versatile Height and Size Compatibility: With an adjustable height range of 66 to 131 cm, the E7 Plus is compatible with tabletops measuring 120 to 180 cm in length, making it suitable for various applications, from desks to conference tables. Adaptable to Accessories: Its simple frame design allows for easy integration with a range of desk accessories, optimizing desk space for improved organization and storage. Tozi, the anti-bullying and cyber-safety app developed by Vodafone Foundation, in collaboration with DCU Anti-Bullying Centre and the ISPCC, is marking Anti-Bullying Week (wc 10 November) with a new social media campaign: Supporting Young People in the Digital World. The campaign aims to empower young people to recognise, respond to, and rise above bullying and is launched as recent ESRI research shows that 62% of 13-year-olds reported experiencing at least one bullying behaviour in the past three months, while one in ten Tozi users have activated the app's SOS feature in the last year, connecting them directly to Childline via call or chat - demonstrating the importance of a trusted digital space and the need for quick, seamless access to support 24/7. At the heart of the campaign is a short video featuring two girls exploring Tozi's "Beat Bullying" module, sharing their thoughts on the app and how it helps them navigate online challenges with confidence. Tozi: In 2022, The Vodafone Ireland Foundation developed and launched Tozi, a free app to combat cyberbullying and promote online safety among children and young people. Since its launch, Tozi has had over 20,000 downloads, and is currently being rolled out across Europe following the Irish success. It offers a content library with advice on handling online challenges, a private journaling space with a feeling's tracker, and direct access to Childline through the SOS feature for 24/7 support. The ESRI research also found that 37% of 13-year-olds faced repeated incidents, with online bullying and name-calling among the most common forms, while children targeted at age nine were more likely to be bullied again at age thirteen, underlining the need for early intervention. Expert Perspective: The Irish Girl Guides have been a Vodafone Foundation partner since 2023, working to provide lessons on digital skills to older people through the Hi Digital initiative. The Irish Girl Guides work closely with young people across Ireland and see firsthand the challenges girls face online. Their experience underscores the urgent need for resources like Tozi, which aims to empower and protect young people in the digital world. Speaking on the growing issue of online bullying, Irish Girl Guides Tir na nÓg Leader and Programme and Training Commissioner, Róisín Mills, said: "As a Leader with the Irish Girl Guides, I worry about the impact social media is having on the girls in my Unit. I see them becoming more disengaged, and I've witnessed the effects of online bullying and the pressure to present a perfect image. That's why we run activities focused on body image, cyber-security, and smart surfing - giving our members the tools to stay safe and confident online. We're realistic about phone use and guide the girls to use technology in a positive, informed way. Creating a safe space for these conversations is vital, and I believe it's making a real difference." Tozi doesn't just teach users what bullying is - it shows them how to stand up, speak out, and support each other in the moments that matter most. Tozi is available for free download on the App Store and Google Play. Learn more at https://www.to-zi.com/ See more stories here. The following is an extract from an interview with Rory McIlroy on how conversations with Bob Rotella have helped his game. "We are talking about not getting too much into results and outcomes, we talk about trying to chase a feeling on the golf course. Like if you're on the golf course, what way do you want to feel when you're playing golf. That's something that is a - it's not something I obviously just do here, but I do every week that I compete. If I can chase that feeling and make that the important thing, then hopefully the golf will take care of itself". Source: Golf News UK - Masters Inteview: Rory McIlroy I have experienced this feeling on the golf course, but not nearly as often as I would like. That feeling, in my words, is best described as playing effortlessly without thoughts of technique, swing planes, or score, etc. That's the day you will smile on the course and have fun with those around you. While playing your best golf. It's never about the score; it's about playing Golf effortlessly. (Or whatever your sport is.) Realising that this is what you are capable of, more often with the right thoughts or no thought process, just doing what comes naturally. Why am I having this conversation with you? About my thoughts on golf? Because I believe the same advice applies when speaking in public. I often encounter people who want or need to be more confident and speak in front of groups, but are hesitant or nervous about doing so. Why? Because I believe they have experienced what people describe as "helpful advice". This advice usually starts with "Let me provide you with some constructive criticism". (Constructive criticism is criticism with the word constructive added to soften the blow - it does not!) Speak slower, speak quicker, louder; don't put your hands in your pockets, make eye contact, imagine your audience is naked, etc., etc. You know the drill. All of the above advice merely increases people's nervousness and diverts the focus from your purpose and reason for speaking to this group. Golf Lesson: Anyone who has experienced a golf lesson from a friend will know the drill: keep your head down, turn from the waist, wait for your shoulders to touch your chin, finish high, all leading to total confusion and exasperation. My wife went to a very well-known golf professional for a lesson some years ago, which consisted of him telling her to 'hit down on the ball' for the whole lesson. The problem was that she did not know what he meant by 'hit down on the ball', and he did not explain or demonstrate; he just assumed she understood. Good coaches, firstly, listen to understand and then provide simple, clear instructions enabling you to progress. Bob Rotella Bob Rotella says you should do this when standing over your golf ball on the course. Look at the target Look at the ball Swing the club What this series of actions does is clear your mind of all the junk usually going around in your head. The advice I provide to my clients as part of their preparation is also a three-step process. Research your audience You know your subject/topic; otherwise, you would not be asked to speak Believe in yourself and they will BELIEVE in you Like Bob Rotella, I aim to keep my clients' heads clear of all the noise and stress that are usually associated with speaking to a group. PS Golf is not a game of perfect, and neither will you be perfect when presenting, but you can be BELIEVABLE and that is what audiences WANT! Upscale Conference held it's annual European gathering last week in picturesque Málaga, Spain. Creativity and AI may seem strange bedfellows to some with the efficiency drive of AI bumping up against the messy organic nature of creative production. But the bubbling enthusiasm evident at Upscale Conf shows that there are plenty that believe it's an augmentation to the creative process rather than a replacement. Upscale Conf is into its third year with AI Entrepreneur Linus Ekenstam as circus master keeping the crowds energised and making sure the focus is always on the creative output rather than the intricacies of AI models. Upscale Conference 2025 reviewed The optimism evident over the talks spoke to a resilience that design was always governed by the human as editor. Marten Kuipers of Dutch design firm DEPT® proclaimed that "AI does not have taste but you do" gaining a loud cheer from the room. While the AI advancements mean that all sectors are experiencing upheaval, we would expect the stalwarts of the creative industry to be treating AI with kid gloves. Veterans Frog Design were represented by Andreas Markdalen who emphasized the importance of human creativity and collaboration in the face of AI, arguing that the ability to connect with people emotionally and create meaningful experiences remains the most crucial factor in the success of any design project. But AI is pushing barriers and breaking rules and nowhere is this more evident than viral AI video breakout stars The Dor Brothers. Ironically Yonathan Dor is the only Dor that exists, but it doesn't stop him putting out hugely popular political satires with an irreverent group of 10 employees. Given the reaction to the videos, it's maybe no surprise that the White House called him looking for more of his edgy style. Riot But the economics of the media landscape still prevail. As Yonathan Dor states, the Dor Brothers is "still a business. So sometimes we post an ad, they're like, what the fuck is this? Sorry guys, we need to make money. Yeah, you know, we're up front. I think at the end of the day what people appreciate is transparency and honesty." At the moment AI has become a lightning rod for all the controversies, anxiety and optimism swirling around society at large. But as our media landscape is changing Nacho Floristan of Google Cloud predicts that 80% of global internet traffic will be video by 2030. Whether that is dominated entirely by AI generated content remains to be seen. FreePik Spaces One of the common issues around AI generation is the parallel task to run models, compare outputs, test parameters and tweak workflows. A hodge podge of techniques might work for an individual, but has been hampering the ability for companies and groups to adopt AI into their workflows. Upscale's sponsor, the local Málaga firm, FreePik, used the conference venue to launch their solution to this problem. FreePik Spaces is an impressive blend of collaboration features and node based workflows. FreePik seems to be tackling the bugbear of most enthusiasts in this Creative AI space. What was previously only available to ComfyUI tinkerers and those comfortable with GitHub repositories is now a node or two away. Brands can stay aligned while generating work and the shared canvas means iterations and feedback can be visible to all. Freepik Spaces: The infinite canvas for creative workflows FreePik for their part sees it as becoming less noticeable even while being more integrated into our lives. Speaking to Irish Tech News, their CEO Joaquin Cuenca said that "wider society will eventually normalize AI, just like computers became commonplace. As AI becomes more integrated into products and services, it will become less noticeable and its impact will be more subtle, focusing on the value of the product itself rather than its AI capabilities." More avenues for AI Slop? The idea that AI is shovelling out slop of low quality and dubious use was not shared by most attendees. Max Ott...
Glitch has raised €2 million in seed funding to make digital advertising faster and easier for lean marketing teams and boutique agencies. The round was led by Elkstone, with participation from Gaingels, HBAN, and several European angel investors backing the company's next stage of growth. Founded by Aisling Browne and Kingsley Kelly, Glitch is an AI-powered ad platform that helps B2B marketers launch high-performing campaigns in minutes. It automates campaign setup, targeting, budget allocation, and daily optimisation, while delivering detailed reports showing which audiences, copy, and keywords drive results. These insights power smarter campaigns and give marketing a strategic voice across the business. The company was built around one insight: lean teams don't lack strategy, they lack time. By automating repetitive, data-heavy tasks, Glitch gives B2B marketers the same performance edge as larger organisations with in-house specialists. Early customers report a 5x increase in conversion rates, a 9% lift in click-through rates, and a 30% reduction in cost per acquisition compared to previous setups. "Digital advertising shouldn't feel like decoding a foreign language," said Aisling Browne, CEO and Co-Founder of Glitch."We built Glitch to give lean teams the power, insights, and confidence to run high-performing campaigns - saving hours ofmanual work and removing the guesswork." Browne and Kelly met through Founders, the Dogpatch Labs talent accelerator, where they teamed up around a shared goal to simplify and modernise B2B advertising. Since then, Glitch has grown into a platform used by companies including Protex AI, Web Summit, We Are Riley, Mango Media, and Squid Loyalty. "In a crowded digital marketing landscape, Glitch stands out because it delivers measurable results for its clients," said Niall McEvoy, Managing Director - Venture at Elkstone. "The team has built a platform that truly empowers B2B marketers and boutique agencies - simplifying campaign management while driving performance." The impact of Glitch's platform is evident in customer collaborations. "Over the past four months, our partnership with Glitch Ads has significantly improved campaign efficiency and overall ad performance," said Dan Hobbs, CEO and Co-Founder at Protex AI. "Their data-driven optimisation, transparent communication, and automation tools have delivered measurable gains while allowing our team to focus on higher-value strategic initiatives." "Glitch handled the heavy lifting for our Search Ads. It's like having an extra performance marketer for our team" said Barry McCullagh, Senior Vice President at Web Summit. The new funding will be used to support Glitch's international expansion, grow its commercial teams, and launch new features - including multi-platform integrations with Meta Ads and LinkedIn. The company will also roll out CRM integrations designed to enhance cross-platform reporting and provide clearer visibility into campaign performance and attribution. See more stories here. We look at the new FlexiSpot Power Swivel Rocker Recliner with Waffle Back. See more about it here. FlexiSpot Power Swivel Rocker Waffle Recliner reviewed At first our reviewers wondered if the Waffle Recliner was a concept like Emmet's double decker sofa in the Lego movie. Good, dumb, fun, interesting, crazy, impossible, or some mix of all of them. In the demo video there is someone laughing and chatting with a glass of wine in the chair. Initially this raised alarm bells, suppose they spilt the wine, but of course this was the point. The chair is stain resistant, so, as we use the chair for leisure and pleasure as well as work, it does it's job, and ensures it is future proofed, to some degree at least. There are charging ports too, so, like Emmet's buddies initial responses, 'that is the literally the dumbest idea I have ever heard of', maybe, just maybe as our testers pushed back in my conversation with them, it is actually quite handy. If you think about it, how many times are you sitting in your current, pre-waffle chair, with a cable snaking it's way over the edge and up into your lap? Yep, admit it, you have done it, so, therefore, maybe it is not actually quite the dumbest idea ever afterall!? The waffle concept seemed a bit sketchy at first too, just think about all the actual waffle crumbs that could end up in the waffle cushioning? Of course it is better designed than that, and it actually works well. We preferred the green option, and it has a cosy feel to it. A good point made by our testers was the limited range of colours however, they were not sure that, if there were only two colours that these would be the only two that they would offer. Maybe more will be added in the future perhaps. The swivel and rocking sound good in theory, but, you would probably also want to be confident that, once you have found your sweet spot, it is something that you can then fix and ensure that this preferred setting remains locked in place. There is a nice element of fun to the swivel waffle chair and our testers enjoyed road testing it. One to check out perhaps when your boss declines your pay rise, but you can at least counter with this to help you out for your deep thinking moments instead? More about the FlexiSpot Power Swivel Rocker Recliner with Waffle Back Experience comfort that moves with your mood. Whether you're relaxing, reading, or chatting with loved ones, the FlexiSpot Power Swivel Rocker Recliner lets you unwind your way - with gentle rocking, smooth swivel motion, and effortless power adjustment for ultimate relaxation. Designed for both comfort and convenience, it reclines up to 135°, includes USB and USB-C charging ports, and features extra padding for superior back and lumbar support. The wide armrests and non-compressed cushioning create a cozy, supportive feel right out of the box. Crafted with easy-care chenille fabric, it's waterproof, oil-proof, and stain-resistant, making maintenance stress-free. From its plush waffle-back design to its modern functionality, this recliner redefines home comfort - so you can relax clean, stay serene, and enjoy every moment. Earlier this autumn Billy Lenihan spoke with ORF Radio Austria for their technology programme Digital.Leben about something that has already become part of everyday life in parts of Dublin – coffee, books and takeaways delivered by drone. The short feature, broadcast on 29 October 2025, explored how Irish company Manna has turned what began as a pilot project into a real delivery service. The interview came about after meeting Franz Zeller, Head of Science at Austrian public radio ORF, during Maker Faire Rome 2025. I was in Rome reporting for Irish Tech News, part of an international press delegation supported by the Italian Trade Agency and Innova Camera, the Rome Chamber of Commerce agency that organises the fair.
Proveye, an Irish agri and climate tech company headquartered at NovaUCD in Dublin, today announced that it has been awarded a European Space Agency (ESA) contract to complete the development and deployment of ProvVari. ProvVari is a breakthrough precision fertiliser solution designed to increase productivity and reduce costs for farmers and significantly cut the environmental footprint of grassland farming across Europe. For decades, artificial fertilisers have been central to European food production, but their widespread use has also contributed to nutrient loss, water pollution, and greenhouse gas emissions. The mission of Proveye, which is pioneering AI-driven remote sensing for grassland management, is to change that. With ESA's backing through the ESA Spark Funding initiative, ProvVari will harness space technology to guide the precise application of fertilisers, reducing waste and environmental impact while maintaining productivity and profitability for farmers. Built on Proveye's ProvGrass platform, ProvVari will combine satellite imagery from ESA's Sentinel-1 SAR and Sentinel-2 multispectral missions with high-resolution l imagery drone, GNSS guidance, and soil and meteorological data. The technology will generate variable rate application maps that optimise fertiliser use, safeguard water quality, and support national and European climate and biodiversity goals. "ProvVari has already drawn strong engagement from agri-advisors, machinery manufacturers, and seed and fertiliser companies, as well as a growing community of progressive Irish farmers. Together, these stakeholders reflect the urgent need for tools that help agriculture deliver food security while protecting natural ecosystems," said Jerome O'Connell, CEO, Proveye. He added, "At Proveye, we see little trade-off between farming and nature; our technologies are designed to enable both to thrive, and this ESA contract is a major step forward in our mission to align agricultural productivity with environmental stewardship, biodiversity protection, food security and climate resilience." Peter Finnegan, Manager of ESA Space Solutions Centre Ireland, which administers the ESA Spark Funding mechanism, welcomed Proveye's most recent ESA contract award and said, "The development of the ProvVari platform is an exciting new solution that will yield benefits for farmers and the environment alike, and is a timely intervention when positioned against the challenges of both increasing productivity and reducing negative environmental impact simultaneously." ProvVari will be launched first in Ireland in Q1 2026 before expanding to international markets. Alongside supporting farmers, ProvVari will also provide regulators and policymakers with a powerful mechanism to manage fertiliser use sustainably, contributing to healthier soils, cleaner waters, and more resilient landscapes across Europe. A researcher at the Dublin Institute for Advanced Studies (DIAS) has issued a request for the public to help create the largest Irish archive of photos of the Northern Lights. In May and October 2024, the northern lights were visible across the island of Ireland, caused by some of the most intense geomagnetic storms of the 21st century. These storms were highly documented by people across the island of Ireland through photos on their phones and cameras, and DIAS researchers are now asking for people to share these images as part of a citizen science research project. To find out more and submit your photos, visit https://www.dias.ie/cosmicphysics/astrophysics/aurora-eire/ Dr Alexandra Ruth Fogg, Postdoctoral Fellow with DIAS School of Cosmic Physics, is the lead researcher who is asking for the public to contribute their images to her research so as to create a comprehensive dataset: "We want to create the first archive of auroral photos from the island of Ireland during these exciting events. Using these photos, we will be able to map the location, brightness, colours and shapes of the aurora across Ireland during these two storms. All of these characteristics of the aurora can tell us different things about what's happening in space. This will give us new and unprecedented information about space weather local to Ireland. This research will contribute to our understanding of space weather, which is a natural hazard and will help to bolster local space weather preparedness for the island of Ireland, which is a priority for the Irish government. Calling for as many people as possible to submit images as they can, Dr Fogg said: "The more images we collect from the public, the more information we will be able to find out. If we are able to gather a large archive of photos from people across the island of Ireland, our dataset can become one of the best scientific resources for analysis of the structure and form of the aurora during these two storms". In Dublin, coffee sometimes falls from the sky via drone delivery Earlier this autumn I spoke with ORF Radio Austria for their technology programme Digital.Leben about something that's already part of everyday life in parts of Dublin: coffee, groceries, and takeaways delivered by drone. The short feature, broadcast on 29 October 2025, looked at how Irish company Manna Aero has turned what began as a pilot project into a real delivery service. The interview came about after meeting Franz Zeller, Head of Science and Innovation at ORF's Wissenschaft Unit, during Maker Faire Rome 2025. I was reporting for Irish Tech News as part of an international press group supported by the Italian Trade Agency and Innova Camera, the Rome Chamber of Commerce agency that runs the fair. How the Interview Happened Maker Faire Rome is Europe's largest festival of invention and creativity, bringing together researchers, artists, and small startups to show how technology can be practical, playful, and shared. Franz and I were part of the same international press delegation, invited by the Italian Trade Agency to visit the fair. In conversation with him, I mentioned that drones now deliver coffee to my home in Dublin, , and showed him a short video on my phone. He was intrigued. Austria has been cautious with drone trials, and the idea of receiving a flat white from the sky was something new. The interview took place one morning on the Gasometro Ostiense site, a former industrial complex turned innovation hub, just before the fair opened fully to visitors. Maker Faire Rome 2025 For more on Maker Faire Rome 2025, visit the Irish Tech News feature: Maker Faire Rome - Festival of Innovation "In Dublin fällt der Kaffee manchmal vom Himmel" "My name is Billy Linehan. I am a journalist with Irish Tech News. We have a home delivery service from Manna Aero, and every morning I can order a flat white dropped into my garden. When it arrives, there's a noise, you can hear the propellers overhead. It's cheaper than a car delivery and more environmentally friendly than using a van or motorbike. Whatever you want, your Chinese takeaway or whatever, you just order on the app, choose the item, and the drone arrives overhead. It lowers the package gently on a little string, and you can even watch the approach live on the map." That short exchange, broadcast nationally on Ö1 Radio Austria, reached a wide audience. It showed how Manna Aero has normalised drone delivery in the suburban area of Blanchardstown in Dublin, something that once sounded like science fiction. Listen here, find out about Dublin's Drone Delivery service, in German and English Why It Matters The interview was brief but said a lot about how technology travels. A conversation at an Italian innovation fair became a science-radio feature in Vienna. It reminded me how closely connected Europe's research and creative communities are. It also showed how public curiosity about practical innovation remains strong. Drone delivery may still be local, but its implications for sustainability, logistics, and convenience are global. A more detailed article on Manna Aero's work in Dublin 15 will follow soon here on Irish Tech News. Programme Note This segment aired on Digital.Leben, Ö1 Radio Austria, on 29 October 2025. The programme was produced by Franz Zeller, Head of Science and Innovation at ORF's Wissenschaft Unit. ePower is reminding sports clubs across the island of Ireland who have been selected for grants to install electric vehicle chargers to ensure they have carried out the necessary paperwork to receive the funding. Through the Shared Island Sports Club EV Charging Scheme, which was launched earlier this year, 227 clubs, of which 179 are in Ireland and 48 in Northern Ireland, have qualified for the installation of a network of publicly accessible chargers. This scheme is administered by Pobal on behalf of Zero Emission Vehicle Ireland (ZEVI). The scheme is designed to cover 100% of the installation costs, allowing clubs to enhance their facilities for both members and visitors at no cost to them. Following a comprehensive tendering process, ePower and two other charge point operators were selected to deliver fast EV charging solutions for both Ireland and Northern Ireland through the scheme. Offers have been sent out to clubs nationwide, across a multitude of sports including athletics, boxing, GAA, golf, hockey, rugby, soccer and tennis clubs. However, ePower is reminding clubs to evaluate the offers they have received, and select their preferred charge point operator via the mini-tender process. ePower is delighted to have already been selected as the preferred CPO for many of the clubs eager to capitalise on this opportunity to lead the charge in sustainability in their community whilst at the same time generating revenue for their clubs. Ivan O'Connor, Commercial Sales Director with ePower says: "This is a wonderful opportunity for sports clubs and ePower is delighted to be part of the scheme. Like with all grants, there's an element of paperwork involved, and the key is for clubs to take the next step and choose their operator, so we would encourage people with questions around this to liaise with the CPOs and Pobal. We look forward to seeing this initiative come to life; further expanding on the public availability of EV charging in communities the length and breadth of Ireland and Northern Ireland." The latest Everhaze "Battle of the Airwaves" report has found that Fianna Fáil's leadership turmoil was the most defining and negatively framed story of the 2025 Presidential election, eclipsing all other topics across more than 16,000 radio mentions. The fallout, which was intertwined with Jim Gavin's withdrawal generated over 2,000 mentions resulting in a sustained national discussion and an average negative weighted sentiment of -43.8 pp, the lowest of the election. Amid the turbulence, Maria Steen emerged as an unexpected winner of the campaign, gaining national prominence on a non-polarising current securing 1,300 mentions largely avoiding controversy and securing net sentiment of +1.0 pp. In contrast, the two leading candidates, Catherine Connolly and Heather Humphreys, were both drawn into negative narratives late in the race, as Connolly's "Bank Representation" (-3.6 pp) and Humphreys' "Shane O'Farrell" (-4.2 pp) storylines became the most damaging stories of their respective campaigns. Connolly ultimately led the airwaves in the final fortnight (44.1% share of voice, +2.3 pp net sentiment) with coverage driven by governance reform and community advocacy themes. Humphreys followed at 37.3% (-2.6 pp), her tone weighed down by ongoing justice and departmental accountability discussions. Gavin's residual post-withdrawal commentary held 18.6% (-3.6 pp) and remained strongly associated with leadership fallout. Local radio again proved decisive, accounting for 72% of all mentions, while national talk shows supplied narrative framing and tone moderation. Overall sentiment across the campaign closed slightly negative (-0.8 pp net), underscoring a cycle defined more by leadership disruption and controversy than by policy promotion. Speaking about the findings, James McCann, CEO of Everhaze said: "Jim Gavin's withdrawal from the race, and the ensuing fallout for Fianna Fáil's leadership, will likely stand as the defining story of the 2025 Presidential campaign. Equally striking is how Maria Steen's absence from the ballot became an unexpected advantage. The sheer volume of her mentions, combined with their notably non-polarising tone, propelled her into national prominence without the burden of controversy. It's also unsurprising that Catherine Connolly was the only candidate to finish with a positive sentiment score, largely because Heather Humphreys' campaign struggled to generate strong counter-narratives capable of offsetting a series of negative stories." The Battle of the Airwaves: Irish Presidential Campaign 2025 report analysed more than 16,000 radio mentions from 60 stations nationwide, tracking sentiment, share of voice, geography, and trend dynamics between 24 September and 25 October 2025. Everhaze is an Irish-built PR intelligence platform that tracks real-time media coverage across radio, print, and online sources in Ireland and the UK. Its technology combines broadcast capture with AI-driven analysis to map who is getting talked about, where, and in what tone. The platform is widely used by communicators to monitor campaigns, understand sentiment shifts, and measure share of voice. See more stories here. By Billy Linehan Maker Faire Festival of invention Maker Faire Rome is a family-friendly festival of invention, creativity and resourcefulness. It brings together creators, tinkerers, artists, scientists, engineers and enthusiasts of all ages to showcase their projects, share ideas, learn from each other and connect. Each year the fair attracts a wide range of participants from across Europe and beyond. The 2025 edition, held at the Gazometro Ostiense site in Rome, showed how Italy presents technology as something open to everyone rather than the preserve of specialists or companies. It is a public meeting place where ideas, skills and tools are shared. Curated by Innova Camera The event is promoted and organised by Innova Camera, the Special Agency of the Rome Chamber of Commerce, with support from the Italian Trade Agency and other public partners. ENI, Italy's leading energy company, was the Platinum Partner for Maker Faire Rome 2025, showcasing its work in sustainable energy and innovation. Readers can see my first report on the event, published in Irish Tech News , which gives background on the fair's scale and purpose. This follow-up looks at what stood out for me in 2025 and why Maker Faire Rome continues to matter. A city of invention Rome becomes a city of invention for three days. People attend to show what they have built, not simply what they intend to sell. Exhibitors range from individual hobbyists to full university research groups. Companies such as Digikey and Arduino are there alongside independent makers. Robots, devices made from recycled materials and new teaching tools for electronics and coding are all on display. The organisers placed a stronger emphasis this year on sustainability, digital manufacturing and human-centred technology. Makers tackling real problems Across the halls and marquees, the emphasis was on solving practical problems. Many exhibitors focused on energy, agriculture, health and sustainability rather than consumer gadgets. The DAFNE project (Digital Agriculture Framework for the Networked Economy), led by the University of Tuscia, focused on combatting the Xylella pathogen that attacks olive trees. It showed how crop-protection research can connect scientific study with practical farming applications. At the University of Siena, a public health team presented UV-Heroes , a device for disinfecting stethoscopes that addresses a genuine hospital hygiene issue. Access to digitised heritage Elsewhere, the Rome-based startup Scan Heritage demonstrated both 2D and 3D digitisation of cultural and archival materials. Their work creates accurate digital copies of documents, artefacts and objects to support preservation, study and public access. The approach has some similarities with Ireland's Virtual Record Treasury of Ireland, as both protect fragile archives through digital access. These examples reflected a grounded approach to technology, linking design with real-world needs. Highlights from the fair With hundreds of exhibits spread across four gasometers, halls, pavilions and outdoor spaces, Maker Faire Rome covered everything from electronics and robotics to applied research and digital art. I focused on projects where ideas are being put to use, alongside creators working with materials and form. A lively robot-football tournament drew large crowds. The SPQR team from Sapienza University of Rome played against visiting teams from the Netherlands and Germany, showing how academic research can be turned into fast, reactive machines. Swiss maker Manuel Imboden presented his Open Source Satellite Kit, an open CubeSat model that helps beginners understand space technology. A former film producer, Imboden turned to electronics and engineering during the pandemic and has since built an online following through his YouTube channel. Technology with a Human Purpose Several research projects showed how technology supports social and medical work. The Pet Robots research team from the Universit...
Researchers at ICARUS, Maynooth University's climate research centre, have launched a new citizen science project, seeking help to rescue African weather data that is vital for research about a part of the world that is very vulnerable to climate change. The project, Weather Archive Africa, is seeking volunteers to sift through some four million images of historical weather data from 43 African countries to determine which images are usable for their research. The images come from the African Centre of Meteorological Application for Development (ACMAD) collection. They were transferred to fiche and film by ACMAD, the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium and the World Meteorological Organisation in the late 1980s/early 1990s and were subsequently converted to electronic images by the Copernicus Climate Change Service. However, the images are of variable quality, and it is unclear where and when the data were obtained. "Before we can transcribe the data, we need to separate the images that are readable from those that are unreadable," says ICARUS researcher Kevin Healion, who is involved in the project. "We also need to make sure that the station name, month, and year of observation are recorded; otherwise, rescuing the data will be all but impossible. Once we know which images are usable and where and when they were taken, we can start the process of rescue." The project, which is supported by the Irish Centre for High-End Computing, is being launched on Zooniverse, a global platform for people-powered research which connects professional researchers with volunteers worldwide. "We have found that those who have helped rescue historical weather data feel that they have made a real contribution towards climate action. I think those who contribute to this project will feel the same," Kevin Healion says. Highlighting the importance of the project for future research, ICARUS director Prof Peter Thorne said: "Rescuing African weather data is vitally important if we are to better understand climate change in this very climate-vulnerable region of the world. This project goes some way towards making this data readily available." Carlo Buontempo, Director of the Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S), also welcomed the initiative: "We warmly welcome this project to transcribe historical climate records from across Africa. Supported by C3S in collaboration with ACMAD and the Royal Meteorological Institute of Belgium, under the auspices of WMO, this citizen-science initiative will enrich observation databases for next-generation climate reanalyses and shed new light on how the continent's climate has evolved since the early 20th century." South East Technological University (SETU) has launched a new digital resource to support micro-enterprises in the region. 'Elevate' is an online platform that provides entrepreneurs with easy access to practical business assessments that help identify strengths and areas for development across a range of enterprise competencies. The platform offers free online tools to evaluate digital readiness, sustainability practices, and innovation capacity, and to support succession planning. These tools enable businesses to identify growth opportunities and take clear steps towards development. A key feature of Elevate is a set of interactive diagnostic tools that help business owners assess and challenge their operations. After completing a short series of questions, users receive a tailored report with recommendations to support future planning and sustainable growth. Each assessment takes only a few minutes to complete and focuses on strategic themes that can be further supported by SETU's business support team. The initiative is part of SETU - TU RISE (Technological University Research and Innovation Supporting Enterprise), which is strengthening research capacity and deepening engagement with enterprises across the south east. Elevate complements the activities of SETU's recently launched Rural Innovation Hubs in Hacketstown, Urlingford, Rosslare Harbour and Dungarvan, giving business owners the opportunity to engage with the university in their locality or online. Commenting on the new initiative, Brian Ogilvie, Head of Entrepreneurship and Rural Engagement, said, "As part of SETU's wider activities to foster entrepreneurship and business engagement, Elevate reinforces our commitment to the business community, particularly those in rural locations." Ian Campbell, Business Development Manager at SETU, added, "Alongside our four new rural innovation hubs across the region, Elevate provides an accessible pathway for business owners to engage with the university's support, including our Technology Gateways. Lero, Ireland's software research centre, is collaborating with Genesys, a global cloud leader in AI-powered Experience Orchestration, on a €550k joint research initiative to enhance the reliability and trustworthiness of AI systems used in customer engagement. Lero Director Professor Lionel Briand of the University of Limerick explains that increasingly, customer care softwarerelies on AI, specifically Large Language Models (LLMs), to power virtual agents' interactions with consumers and support human agents in handling interactions. ß? "AI can deliver faster, more informed responses and support better customer experiences," he said. "However, like any complex system, they can present challenges related to contextual accuracy and operational oversight. This project focuses on developing methods to strengthen safeguards and improve overall system dependability." "Our goal is to enhance the scalability and real-time performance of safeguards such as input filtering and output moderation to ensure high standards of accuracy, efficiency and safety in LLM-based systems," Professor Briand explained. The collaboration will help Genesys advance the principles of ethical AI, including accountability, transparency, andfairness, by providing innovative approaches to monitoring and improving AI behaviour in real-world environments. "Trust is foundational for AI adoption," said Joe Smyth, Senior Vice President of Research and Development, Digital and AI at Genesys, and leader of its R&D Centre in Galway. "Through this collaboration with Lero, we aim to further strengthen the traceability and accountability of AI systems to advance their responsible use in orchestrating increasingly complex customer experience applications." A new European wide survey from Geotab, a global leader in connected vehicle and asset solutions, reveals that Irish van and lorry drivers have a clear vision for the future of in-cab technology, with 90% stating they would be more comfortable with instant audio coaching. The technology uses AI to analyse in-cab video in real time, rather than storing inward-facing footage for later review. The study of over 3,500 professional drivers across seven European countries, including 500 in Ireland, examined driver attitudes towards the use of in-cab dashcams. While 96% of Irish van and lorry drivers are concerned about the use of in-cab cameras, almost just as many (95%) would be willing to overlook these concerns if footage could prove they were not at fault after a collision. This reveals a fundamental "privacy versus protection" dilemma at the heart of Irish driver's attitudes, highlighting that they are not against technology, but are instead weighing the benefit of potential exoneration against a wide spectrum of worries. Irish driver concerns are widespread and varied, with no single issue forming a majority. 41% worry that road-facing footage could be used out of context, failing to show the full picture of an event, while 39% are concerned that the footage could be used unfairly against them for disciplinary action. 37% said the dashcam technology makes them feel as though they are being spied on or shows a lack of trust from their employer. The varied barriers to the adoption of video cameras reflected by the study reveals an urgent education gap that cannot be overlooked by fleet managers. "The data shows that Irish drivers are pragmatic and forward-thinking", said Edward Kulperger, Senior Vice President, EMEA at Geotab. "Professional drivers are clearly open to technology that protects them and promotes safer roads, provided it's implemented transparently and with respect for their privacy. Technology like in-cab cameras can play a vital role in protecting drivers and improving road safety, but trust is key. Drivers want reassurance that data is used responsibly and in their best interests and innovations such as real-time AI coaching show how safety and privacy can work hand in hand." The survey confirms earlier findings from Geotab's driver research noting nearly 73% of Irish drivers support adopting technology to enhance their performance. This new data notes that a combined 69% are positive about using footage for coaching, provided it is constructive and collaborative, with none of the respondents stating they see no benefit at all in having a dashcam. When asked about the biggest benefits, drivers cited improving their own standards through coaching, increased security, and proving they were not at fault in a collision, further underlining their dual interest in both professional development and personal protection.
