She talked about how success as a black woman entrepreneur comes with highs and lows.On this episode we discuss how Black Women should support each other and uplift each other because they often have to work twice as hard for their businesses to survive and they don't get the same level of financial funding as other business owners. Many of black women owned businesses are self-funded and were severely impacted by 202. As a black woman entrepreneur and doctor, Dr. Judith personally understands the importance of supporting black women owned businesses because entrepreneurs deal with a whole host of mental health issues because they tend to take care of everyone else but themselves. This puts them at risk for High functioning depression because they worry about the needs of their clients, employees and their families and they feel like they cannot slow down because they are needed by so many.Listen in as we discuss:Supporting Black Women Owned Businesses.Coping with High Functioning Depression as an EntrepreneurHow to take risks as a physician business owner. How to build relationships in business. How to form long lasting friendshipsHow to check-in with your friendsHow to take care of your mental health as a small business owner How to Ask For Help and SupportFollow Dr. Catrise Austin Instagram WebsiteFollow Teri Johnson Instagram WebsiteFollow Dr. Judith Joseph: Instagram TikTok Facebook Website Newsletter Sign-UpDisclaimer: Consider your individual mental health needs with a licensed medicalprofessional. The U.S. Court of Appeals for the 11th Circuit has blocked the Fearless Fund, a Black-owned venture capitalist firm, from issuing grants exclusively to Black women entrepreneurs. The court ruled that the fund's grant contest likely violates Title 42 of the U.S. Code, which prohibits racial discrimination in contracts. The decision halts the fund's grant application process and marks a win for anti-affirmative action legal strategist Edward Blum. Arian Simone, CEO of the Fearless Fund, expressed devastation at the ruling, stating that it sends a message that diversity in corporate America and education should not exist. She vowed to continue the fight for economic opportunity for women of color, who received less than two percent of venture capitalist money. Rev. Al Sharpton, President of National Action Network, blasted the decision, calling it another blow to diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts, and emphasized the importance of standing with the Fearless Fund and all women of color entrepreneurs in the face of right-wing legal challenges. A U.S. federal court of appeals panel has suspended a venture capital firm's grant program for Black women business owners, ruling that a conservative group is likely to prevail in its lawsuit claiming the program is discriminatory. The case against the Fearless Fund was brought by the American Alliance for Equal Rights, led by Edward Blum, the activist behind the Supreme Court case that ended affirmative action in college admissions. In a 2-1 ruling, the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals found that Blum was likely to prevail in his claim that the grant program violated the 1866 Civil Rights Act, which was a Reconstruction-era law was designed to protect formerly enslaved people from economic discrimination, but anti-affirmative action activists have been using it to challenge programs aimed at benefiting minority-owned businesses. According to a 2021 report in the Harvard Business Review, 17% of Black women are in the process of starting or running new businesses, compared to 10% of white women and 15% of white men. For this special two-part “Black Women Entrepreneurship” series, Access and Opportunity is on the road in Washington D.C. – recently named the best city for Black entrepreneurs to start a business – to hear from the women driving this Black business boom by putting community at the center. On this episode, Carla visits entrepreneur Angel Gregorio at her spice shop turned small business incubator, The Spice Suite. Angel, a former assistant school principal, took the leap into business ownership in 2015 after taking over an open retail space. As Angel became a community fixture, she began letting other Black women use the space for pop-ups to sell their own goods. Soon, a tribe was formed calling themselves the Spice Girls, a community of Black women small business owners who support each other's unique entrepreneurial journeys. We'll hear from Angel and two of her Spice Girls, Sam Smith and Tiaa Rutherford, about becoming entrepreneurs and how their community has helped them chart paths forward. American entrepreneurship had been on a 40-year decline. But 2020 is the year that turned around; entrepreneurship is on the rise once again. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, aspiring entrepreneurs filed paperwork to start 5.4 million new businesses in 2021. This recent surge in entrepreneurship has been disproportionally attributed to women and people of color, so for this special two-part series we're honing in on an intersection of those two identities: Black women. In the second of our two-part “Black Women Entrepreneurs” series, available in your feed now, we're broadening the lens to dig into the cultural and business forces behind the rising tide of Black entrepreneurship and the marketplace changes needed to further empower its growth. Carla joins innovative business leader Melissa Bradley in Washington, D.C. to discuss 1863 Ventures, a national business development nonprofit accelerator and venture capital fund for historically underestimated individuals. The organization is on a mission to generate 100 billion dollars of wealth for founders by 2030. Through 1863 Ventures, Melissa is working to create an entrepreneurial ecosystem where Black founders, including the rising tide of Black women business owners, can thrive. We see success relatively quickly, get into a top-tier groove and reach a summit we once dreamed of. However, for some there comes a time when the view from the mountaintop isn't quite what they pictured. And in the comfortable chaos that led to your success, you find peace is more important and a shift occurs. Today we're spilling the tea on shifting careers and maintaining growth.April started in book publishing and fell in love with the industry. She was able to meet new creatives, work with them closely on bringing their dream to fruition, and watch the results of their labor play out at retailers. For nine years, April excelled but was also burning the candle at both ends. At this time, she knew she needed to slow down and figure out how to realign her lifestyle so that it wouldn't cause detriment to her health, peace of mind, and business. It was through delving deep into tai chi methodology and the healing benefits of herbal teas that she found balance. From her healing, Upland Tea House was born.MERCH IS HERE!!
