Break out the green top hats, wigs, feathered boas, sunglasses, shamrock-themed T-shirts, and whatever else helps you get in touch with your Irish spirit because there are going to be some St. Patrick's Day parties happening in Gwinnett County this weekend. There are six main St. Patrick's events taking place between Friday — which is the actual St. Patrick's Day — and Saturday. Two of them are in Lawrenceville, two more will happen in Suwanee and the others are in Norcross and Lilburn. Cosmo's Pizza + Social is kicking things off on today with the Cosmo's St. Paddy's Party, which will begin at 4 p.m. The event will include outdoor patio games, live music, a DJ, green beer, festive drinks, prizes and giveaways, as well as Irish food specials, such as corned beef and cabbage. Cosmo's is located at 144 Crogan St. in Lawrenceville. On Saturday, there will be events taking place in Lawrenceville, Norcross, Lilburn and Suwanee. The Suwanee Kiwanis Club will hold its annual Shamrock 5K at Suwanee Town Center Park at 8 a.m. on Saturday. The race, which raises money for the Kiwanis Club, is St. Patrick's themed. Runners are encouraged to run while wearing the most St. Patrick's-inspired outfit they can come up with. Runners have until 9 a.m. on today to sign up. Norcross will hold its annual Irish Fest from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. in historic downtown Norcross. The event will include music, dancing, face painting, a balloon artist, food tastings and other Irish-inspired activities. Attendees are also encouraged to visit downtown Norcross' shops and restaurants for specials throughout the day. One of the biggest St. Patrick's traditions in Gwinnett is the annual Suwanee Beer Fest, where attendees are encouraged to show up decked out in green to enjoy a broad array of craft beers. This year's event will begin at 1 p.m. on Saturday and last until 5 p.m., at Suwanee Town Center Park, which is located at 330 Town Center Avenue in Suwanee. This year's event will include 350 different beers, as well as food, entertainment and vendors. Tickets cost $70 on the day of the event, but can be purchased in advance at suwaneebeerfest.com. Meanwhile, the annual Lilburchaun St. Patrick's Celebration in Lilburn will take place from 2 until 5 p.m. at City Park, which is located at 76 Main St. The event will include a walking parade, which begins at the band shell at 3 p.m., a DJ, the Athens Piper and Leprechaun Fiddler, kids activities, green sweet treats, food trucks and “maybe even a little leprechaun magic, according to city officials. Police are asking for help finding missing woman Selena Garcia

Gwinnett County police are calling for information on what happened to a Hispanic woman who disappeared after going out with friends last fall. Police issued a call for information on he whereabouts of Selena Garcia on Monday. Garcia's family last heard from her on October 7, her sister Zaira Garcia told the Daily Post last week. The 25-year-old told her sister she was going out with friends. Her family has not heard from her since then. Her sister said a message she sent a few days later was marked read, but never responded to. The police department's call for information in the Selena Garcia disappearance came days after Crime Stoppers of Greater Atlanta issued its own call for information on her last Friday. Garcia was reported missing from her home on Dickens Terrace in Lilburn, and police said she is known to frequent the Lilburn, Norcross and Buford areas. She is described as being 5-feet, 4-inches tall and weighing 160 pounds, with brown eyes, straight brown hair and multiple tattoos. Her tattoos include a "503" across her fingers on her right hand, "Maria" on the outside of her wrist and a dark green marijuana plant on the top of her hand. Selena Garcia had been released from the Gwinnett County Jail the day before her family last heard from her. She had been arrested last July on charges of tampering with evidence, criminal trespass for unlawful purposes, and giving a false name, address or birthdate to a law enforcement officer. Anyone who has information about Selena Garcia's whereabouts is asked to call detectives or crime stoppers. Twenty-five people named in a 210-count indictment — for crimes ranging from racketeering to murder, gang activity and armed robbery — have been arrested by multiple law enforcement agencies, including agencies from Gwinnett County. Gwinnett County police announced their Gang Unit worked with the Gwinnett Sheriff's Office Fugitive Unit, the Gwinnett County District Attorney's Office, the FBI, the U.S. Marshals Service, the DeKalb County Police Department, the Fulton County district Attorney's Office and the DeKalb County District Attorney's Office to make the arrests. There were 26 suspects named in the indictment, and one of them, 22-year-old Decatur resident Khari "RX Yano" Kelley, remains at large. The arrests or the 25 other suspects named in the indictment, however, came after a year-long investigation by the Gwinnett Police Gang Unit. In August 2021, multiple shooting cases along Boggs Road in Duluth led investigators to discover ongoing violence between 'Blixtz' gang and '56 Gang. On August 29, 2021, '56 Gang' members shot and killed 18-year-old Jeremiah Pretto (an 18-year-old male from Duluth). The case evolved into a RICO investigation against the "56 Gang" in December 2021 as several members were charged with violent cases. Investigators also discovered the '56 Gang' was working with the 'Drug Rich' gang as cases began to emerge where members of both gangs were accused or committing crimes began to emerge. The case came to a head when the top two leaders of the "56 Gang" — Lawrenceville resident Ladavion "Chicago" Smith, 22, and Clarkston resident Cameron "XG" Hamilton, 18 — along with the two highest ranking members of the "Drug Rich" gang — Stone Mountain residents Dalemonte "Drug Rich Hect" Neshawn Stilley, 24, and Zaion "Drug Rich Peso" Sharif Martinez, 27 — were indicted on RICO charges by a Gwinnett County grand jury on Jan. 25, along with 22 other members of the two gangs. In addition to the RICO charges, however, the indictment also lists several other crimes, including violations of the Gang Act, malice and felony murder, armed robbery, hijacking a motor vehicle, aggravated assault, terroristic threats, and various firearms offenses. asmine Morales is mourning the big life events, such as high school graduation, that her little sister, Susana, will not get to have because she was murdered by a now former police officer last summer. Meanwhile, Zaira Garcia has been in a constant state of worry about her sister, Selena, who has been missing since last October. The cases involving Susana Morales and Selena Garcia are just some of the cases that are causing concern among Hispanic residents in Gwinnett County. Some of the cases involve people, like Garcia, who are still classified as missing, while others involve people, such as Morales or Jose Daniel Martinez, who have been the victims of murderers. And, other cases, such as the one involving Rodrigo Floriano Mayen, involve deaths that have been classified as being the result of drug overdoses. These cases all add up to a Hispanic community that is turning to Gwinnett County police and asking what the county's law enforcement is doing to keep them safe. The Hispanic community got a chance to address its concerns to Gwinnett police officials, including Police Chief J.D. McClure, during a community meeting at Universal Church on Thursday night. Attendees highlighted a number of issues, asking police what they are doing about concerns such as fentanyl, gangs, curfews for young people, missing persons cases and human trafficking. For attendees their concerns are reinforced by cases such as the murder of Morales, the disappearance of Garcia, the overdose death of Mayen, and the shooting death of Martinez — which police have indicated was an apparent gang initiation killing — highlight the diversity of issues the Hispanic community is concerned about. Zaira Garcia also mentioned that some are afraid of police because they think officers will arrest them and try to have them deported. Major Jordan Griffin, who is the commander of the police department's West Precinct, said Hispanic residents should not be worried about whether officers will check their immigration status, however, because that is not their job. Zaira also highlighted the need for more Spanish speaking personnel in the department, while Jasmine Morales voiced her frustrations in how the department handled the investigation of her sister's disappearance prior to her death. JD McClure continued to defend his department and their handling of the Morales case.   Brookwood senior Diana Collins and Grayson junior Gicarri Harris earned the top awards among the Gwinnett Tipoff Club's postseason honors Monday for the best in local high school basketball. Collins was selected as the county's Girls Player of the Year, and Harris was the Boys Player of the Year. In addition to Collins' award, the Brookwood girls were named Co-Girls Team of the Year, sharing the award with the Hebron Christian girls. Both Brookwood and Hebron won state titles, and their coaches — Brookwood's Courtney Mincy and Hebron's Jan Azar — shared Girls Coach of the Year honors. For a list off all the players selected to the teams, please head to Gwinnett Prep Sports dot com. Whataburger is coming to Gwinnett County next week. The Texas-based restaurant chain announced it will open at the Exchange @ Gwinnett, which is located at 2925 Buford Drive in Buford, on March 20. The restaurant, which will the third Whataburger location in metro Atlanta, will only offer drive-thru service at first. The location will be open 24 hours a day and it is the first of two Whataburger locations that are slated to open in Gwinnett County. An additional location in Snellville is set to open at a later date. The new restaurant is expected to generate 150 new jobs in the Buford area. In anticipation of traffic created by the opening, Whataburger has announced is will pay Gwinnett County police to provide traffic control for the restaurant's opening. The openings of Whataburger locations in Kennesaw and Woodstock led to long lines of traffic that spilled out of the restaurants parking lots and onto adjacent streets. Whataburger announced it will add online ordering and pick-up, as well as dine-in options, in the weeks to come as those services become ready to roll out The Georgia Senate passed legislation Monday that will require Georgia public schools to conduct active-shooter drills by Oct. 1 of each year.   Governor Brian Kemp's “Safe Schools Act” also creates a school-safety and anti-gang certification for teachers and other school employees who complete a school safety and gang-deterrence training program.  Though the bill ultimately passed nearly unanimously, it drew criticism from Democrats. Senator Elena Parent, a Democrat from Atlanta lamented that the bill highlights the failure to pass meaningful gun control laws. Parent, who ultimately voted for the bill, noted that several Democratic-sponsored gun control bills have not received committee hearings during this year's legislative session.  The bill's focus on gang-violence prevention also drew concerns. Grayson Democratic Senator Nikki Merritt voiced concerns that the identification focused training could lead to racial profiling. The bill now moves to the governor's desk for his signature.  For more information be sure to visit www.bgpodcastnetwork.com   https://www.lawrencevillega.org/  https://www.foxtheatre.org/  https://guideinc.org/  https://www.psponline.com/  https://www.kiamallofga.com/  https://www.milb.com/gwinnett  https://www.fernbankmuseum.org/  www.atlantagladiators.com    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Let #MarchMadness begin. Kennesaw State will square off in the first round of the NCAA tournament; Wheeler knocked off Cherokee to win the state title; The adult spelling be was a huh success; And an area man had written a book to make sure his parents' experiences in the Holocaust are never forgotten.     Now, it seems real. It had been a full week since Kennesaw State defeated Liberty to win the ASUN Conference tournament title and earned a spot in this year's NCAA Tournament On Sunday, the wait came to an end. The Owls earned the Number 14 seed of the Midwest Region and will face third-seeded Xavier on Friday in Greensboro, North Carolina. Tip-off is set for 12:40 p.m. on TruTV. The winner will advance to play either sixth-seeded Iowa State or the Number 11 seed — the winner of a First Four game between Mississippi State and Pittsburgh. Xavier, which lost to Marquette in the Big East Conference title game, is one of the highest-scoring teams in college basketball, averaging 84.1 points per game, but Kennesaw State coach Amir Abdur-Rahim said he knows exactly what to expect in the matchup. He said Sean Miller's teams are always physical and will guard well. Abdur-Rahim said he has seen Miller's teams up close before. Twice as an assistant at Texas A&M, he coached against Miller's then-Arizona teams in early-season showcase tournaments. In 2016 the Aggies played the Wildcats and fell 67-63. A year later, Texas A&M got a point closer but lost 67-64. While the history with Miller may not have played in Abdur-Rahim's favor, he is still happy about who and where the Owls will be playing as they make their first NCAA Tournament appearance. Greensboro is only 5½ hours from Kennesaw. For fans interested in purchasing tickets can visit the NCAA's official ticketing site at NCAA Tickets dot Com. As the final seconds ticked off the clock in Saturday's Class AAAAAAA state championship game at the Macon Coliseum, Isaiah Collier began to let his emotions out.  The Wheeler point guard dribbled the ball for the last time, fell to his knees and had a quick moment of prayer. Just seconds later, he was swallowed up by his teammates as the Wildcats defeated Cherokee 78-58 for their third state title in four years and the ninth in the program's decorated history. The fact that Collier was still on the floor at the end was a surprise to some, but it was something the Southern California-bound Naismith High School Player of the Year asked his coach for. Collier wanted to honor the memory of Khalil Hardison, a former Wheeler player who drowned last August while swimming in the Chattahoochee River. Hardison was Collier's cousin and the son of Wildcats coach Larry Thompson. Once Collier got back to his feet after the dogpile, he was still emotional. With tears coming down his face, he and Thompson shared a long hug, and then the celebration started in earnest.  In his final game, Collier showed why he is one of the best -- if not the best -- high school players in the country. He finished with 22 points on 9-of-13 shooting and seven assists, and he was key during an 11-3 third-quarter run that helped put the game away. Wheeler finished the season on a 17-game winning streak and without a loss to a team from Georgia. The victory over Cherokee was the Wildcats' 12th in a row in the series and the 21st of the last 22.  The Downtown Marietta Development Authority and the City of Marietta have announced the 2023 Glover Park Concert Series, presented by Marietta Dental Associates. The smell of beer and popcorn permeated the Strand Theatre as the boisterous crowd settled in for the evening's entertainment. A voice boomed overhead as lights flickered on and off, creating dancing shadow-apparitions on the walls of the Strand's art-deco interior. It was time for the crowd to quiet down so the costume-clad performers could make their introduction. So began the Sixth Annual Adult Spelling Bee, a fundraiser for the Cobb branch of Communities in School, a school dropout prevention and intervention organization that offers resources to students in need. Each team burst out from behind curtains to music blaring and roars from the crowd, running up one aisle and down the other, slapping hands with the audience before jumping on stage to find their seats. By scanning a QR code from the event's program, audience members could participate by donating money throughout the show. People could vote for at least $1 each time to support their favorite group, or they could buy a team back into the contest for $150 if a word was spelled incorrectly. The crowd, as well as the contestants, were fired-up throughout the night. As each team rose from their seats and approached the mic, dancing and singing would inevitably ensue before a spelling attempt was made. Dressed as Disney princesses Snow White, Cinderella and Ariel, the “Once Upon A Time” team — Joy Doss, Bobby Johnson and Matt Giddens — received the most votes as the fan favorite, raising more than $3,000. Team “Bee-g Bang Theory,” comprised of Raymond Goslow, Michael Miller and Andy Tatnall, spelled the final word — incunabulum — correctly and received trophies for winning the big event. In all, over eighty five thousand dollars was raised. Michael Ruskin was on a mission as the last surviving member of his family to write about what his parents endured at the hands of the Nazis. That drive culminated in Ruskin sharing his parents' story of surviving the Holocaust in his book, “The Vow: A Love Story & The Holocaust.” Ruskin spoke about the book Saturday at the Marietta History Center. He told attendees his parents did not talk much about what they experienced when he was growing up. Ruskin did not know the full story until after his parents died. After his father died, he found a bunch of old documents and photos while cleaning out his father's Miami condo. This was the beginning of his journey to tell the story of his late parents, David and Dora Ruskin. Michael Ruskin spoke about how his parents were forced into a Lithuanian ghetto, called a “safe zone,” early in their marriage. They survived horrific conditions in cattle cars as they were shipped into the unknown. His father ended up in Dachau, the first concentration camp built by the Nazis outside of Munich. Ruskin's mother was sent to the Stutthof Concentration Camp in northern Poland with his sister, Rose, who was only 3 years old when she was killed. Somehow, his parents survived. At the end of World War II, David Ruskin was liberated in 1945 by American troops, and Dora Ruskin was liberated the same year by the Russians. The book describes their journey to reunite and move forward. For more information on Ruskin's book, visit The Vow a Love Story dot com. Sitting at the corner of Barrett Parkway and Bells Ferry Road, boarded up and abandoned, the fate of the Robert McAfee House is uncertain. There is a historical marker in front of the house, but the house and land are not protected, according to Trevor Beemon, executive director of Cobb Landmarks and Historical Society. The property is owned by the Medford Family Limited Partnership. The house was constructed for early Cobb County settlers Eliza and Robert McAfee. During the Civil War, according to a historical marker on the front lawn, the house was used by Brigadier General Kenner Garrard as his headquarters shortly after Union forces seized Big Shanty, now known as Kennesaw. The house is located in unincorporated Cobb, and an application to rezone the land it sits on is currently being reviewed by the Cobb Board of Commissioners. A developer is looking to buy the land and build a car wash on the property, Beemon said. The only way to save the house is to relocate it, Beemon said, and using the house as a commercial structure isn't financially viable. In order to help make sure historic properties in Cobb are protected, Beemon urges people to attend Cobb County Board of Commissioners meetings on a regular basis. Historic homes on private property can be tough to save. Director of the Marietta History Center Amy Reed said that there is only so much the historical society can do, but they would love to be able to save this house.    See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

In episode 290, Kestrel welcomes Samata Pattinson, the CEO of RCGD Global, to the show. A women-led global change-making organization, RCGD Global is bringing environmental and social sustainability to the forefront of conversation and action within the global apparel and design industry.  “All I really want to be part of is helping other people see where they fit in this. And helping them to identify something that means something to them. It could be any of the things we talk about — it could be climate on a specific realm, it could be biodiversity through a specific realm, it could be women's rights, it could be advocating for Indigenous or Black representation. It could be any of those things, but it's almost like — let me try and help you see how you form a way of being in this conversation.” -Samata Have you ever heard of the term generative conversation? It's a newer concept for myself and it's one that this week's guest reminds us of. On a basic level – generative conversations are conversations that involve genuine inquiry and sharing. They are conversations in which we engage in deep listening. They are conversations in which we feel truly heard and nourished – they involve a space where respect and trust are cultivated. And through generative conversations, they allow the possibility for expanded understandings and the discoveries of shared meaning. In order to truly quote unquote *move the needle* in the sustainability and fashion space, these types of conversations are mandatory. As this week's guest reminds us, when we talk about sustainability, we have to lead with questions … not our individual agenda. Questions welcome an openness to learning and sharing. And they help avoid the critical tone that can easily sneak its way into these discussions. Because remember – how we have the conversation influences where the conversation goes.  Thoughtful communication is so KEY for this week's guest. As the CEO of a global change-making organization, she is navigating storytelling with notable talent across a massive platform – the Red Carpet at the Oscars. This year, she wrote the first ever Oscars Sustainable Dress code, that went out to every single attendee of this year's event. Imagine condensing the many layers of sustainability and fashion into one document – she shares how she did it. I love how she welcomes a constant expansion in the sustainability narrative, and never loses sight of a key ingredient: hope. Quotes & links from the conversation: RCGD Global Sustainable Style Guide “We do say we want representation, we want these varied voices, but we don't talk about how much more interesting the conversation is, how much more enlightening the conversation is. The same way we will say — oh, you know, we have Indigenous communities protecting 80 percent of our biodiversity, but what we don't say is like but they protect it better. Comparatively, like 30-40-50 percent better growth biodiversity of fauna and flora. So, it's not just saying like, this should exist — it's saying it's more interesting, it's more expertise, it's more engaging, why aren't we doing more of it?” -Samata (30:22) Follow Samata on Instagram > Follow RCGD Global on Instagram > Follow Red Carpet Green Dress on Instagram >

EA - Suggestion: A workable romantic non-escalation policy for EA community builders by Severin

Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Suggestion: A workable romantic non-escalation policy for EA community builders, published by Severin on March 8, 2023 on The Effective Altruism Forum. Last year, I attended an Authentic Leadership Training with the Authentic Relating org Authentic Revolution, and was course lead mentee for a second iteration. One thing that struck me about AuthRev's ways is their approach to policing romantic relationships between facilitators and participants, within a community whose personal/professional overlap is even stronger than EA's. They have a romantic non-escalation policy that goes roughly like this: For three months after a retreat, and for one month after an evening event, facilitators are prohibited from engaging romantically, or even hinting at engaging romantically, with attendees. The only exception is when a particular attendee and the facilitator already dated beforehand. These numbers are drawn from experience: As some people have most of their social life within the community, longer timelines are so unworkable that the default is to just ignore them and do everything in secret. Shorter timelines, however, tend to be insufficiently effective for mitigating the problems this policy tries to address. Granted, Authentic Relating is a set of activities that is far more emotionally intense than what usually happens at EA events. However, I think there are some reasons for EA community builders to adhere to this policy anyway: Romance distracts from the cause. Attendees should focus on getting as much ea-related value as possible out of EA events, and we as organizers should focus on generating as much value as possible. Thinking about which hot community builder you can get with later distracts from that. And, thinking about which hot participant you can get with later on can lead to decisions way more costly than just lost opportunities to provide more value. None of us are as considerate and attuned in our private lives as when doing community building work. Sometimes we don't have the energy to listen well. Sometimes we really need to vent. Sometimes we are just bad at communication when we don't pay particular attention to choosing our words. The personas we put up at work just aren't real people. If people fall in love with the version of me that they see leading groups, they will inevitably be disappointed later. Power differentials make communication about consent difficult. And the organizer/attendee-separation creates a power differential, whether we like it or not. The more power differential there is, the more important it is to move very slowly and carefully in romance. Status is sexy. Predatorily-minded people know this. Thus, they are incentivized to climb the social EA ladder for the wrong reasons. If we set norms that make it harder for people to leverage their social status for romantic purposes, we can correct for this. That is, as long as our rules are not so harsh that they will just be ignored by default. Though a part of me finds this policy inconvenient, I think it would be a concerning sign if I weren't ready to commit to it after I saw it's value in practice. However, EA is different from AR, and a milder/different/more specified version might make more sense for us. Accordingly, I'll let the idea simmer a bit before I fully commit. Which adjustments would you make for our context? Some specific questions I have: AR retreats are intensely facilitated experiences. During at least some types of EA retreats, the hierarchies are much flatter, and participants see the organizers "in function" only roughly as much as during an evening-long workshop. Does this justify shortening the three months, e.g. to one month no matter for which type of event? I'd expect that the same rule should apply for professional 1-on-1s, for example EA career coaching....

Motorists in Austell pulled over for faulty tail lights, broken rearview mirrors or other damage to their cars could now be in for a gift card instead of a ticket. Thanks to a partnership between Advance Auto Parts and the Austell Police Department, officers responsible for traffic citations have $500 worth of gift cards from the auto shop. Instead of making drivers pay, the city will pay drivers to be safer on the road, giving them a gift card to fund repairs so that they comply with the law. Austell Police Chief Scott Hamilton was joined by other officers in the city's police department Thursday at the Advance Auto Parts on Veterans Memorial Highway to announce the collaboration. Mark Strenta, an Advance Auto Parts vice president, said this is the company's first partnership with any Cobb city, and the first to happen in one west of Atlanta. Advance Auto Parts already has similar partnerships with Sandy Springs and Lilburn, and Strenta hopes to expand to Peachtree City soon. Cobb County leaders were in the schools Thursday to read to students as part of Read Across America Day. Established by the National Education Association in 1998, Read Across America now offers year-round programming to encourage reading among students, and it does so by promoting books that students can both see themselves reflected in, as well as those that present experiences that may be different from their own. It also still marks March 2 as Read Across America Day, and all of March is National Reading Month. Smyrna Mayor Derek Norton read to fourth-grade students at Norton Park Elementary to recognize the event. As part of her “Read Across Cobb tour,” Cobb school board Nichelle Davis read to “Smyrna Elementary STARS” to celebrate the day. Another Cobb school board member, Leroy Tre' Hutchins, read to students at Riverside Elementary in Mableton.  Kennesaw State used three straight 3-pointers deep into the shot clock, including what may have been the biggest shot in the program's Division I history, to hold off Lipscomb 80-71 in the semifinals of the ASUN tournament at the KSU Convocation Center on Thursday. The Owls will now host the conference championship game for the first time. They will get a rematch with co-regular season champion Liberty on Sunday at 3 p.m. with the winner earning the automatic bid into the NCAA tournament. It will be the first time KSU will play in the title game, and it will be the first game to be shown on national television from the Convocation Center, as ESPN 2 will broadcast it. If the Owls win on Sunday, they will clinch a spot in the NCAA tournament for the first time since the program moved to Division one. The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area, stretching along the river for 48 miles through metro Atlanta, posted its highest ever number of visitors in 2022, the National Park Service announced Thursday. Some 3.5 million people are estimated to have visited the recreation area last year, representing an increase of about 9% from 2021. That outpaces the river's park service neighbor in Cobb, Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park, which had about 1.3 million visitors in 2022. Among all National Park Service units nationwide, the Chattahoochee ranked 21st in attendance. The park service said to avoid crowds, visitors are advised to visit NPS dot gov. A Cobb County police officer was involved in a car wreck Thursday morning. Police spokesperson Shenise Barner said the collision occurred around 7 a.m. near Atlanta Road at Bingham Street, in the Fair Oaks area. There were complaints of minor injuries, but Barner said this was not a “major crash.” Cobb's Selective Traffic Enforcement Unit is investigating the incident. The Kennesaw Parks & Rec Department will have the annual Bunny Breakfast on April 1 at the Ben Robertson Community Center in Kennesaw. There will be two seatings available: 8 to 9:15 a.m. and 10 to 11:15 a.m. Attendees will be treated to a buffet including hot and ready pancakes, scrambled eggs and sausage, as well as a medley of fresh fruit and breakfast sweets. Everyone's favorite cottontail will be making his way from table to table to say hello to all the boys and girls. Attendees are encouraged to bring their own camera to capture photos with the Easter Bunny. Tickets are $8 per person and can be purchased online or at the Ben Robertson Community Center. Advance purchase is required. Tickets are non-refundable after March 24. Children ages two and under do not need a ticket if they will be sitting in laps. New this year, experience the beauty of Smith-Gilbert Gardens at the annual Egg Hunt on April 1 with a combo Bunny Breakfast/Egg Hunt ticket. The Egg Hunt is open to children up to nine years of age. Easter themed crafts will be available at the Egg Hunt, as well as organized garden games. #CobbCounty #Marietta #LocalNews -            -            -            -            The Marietta Daily Journal Podcast is local news for Marietta, Kennesaw, Smyrna, and all of Cobb County.             Subscribe today, so you don't miss an episode! MDJOnline            Register Here for your essential digital news.            https://www.chattahoocheetech.edu/  https://cuofga.org/ https://www.esogrepair.com/ https://www.drakerealty.com/           Find additional episodes of the MDJ Podcast here.             This Podcast was produced and published for the Marietta Daily Journal and MDJ Online by BG Ad Group   For more information be sure to visit https://www.bgpodcastnetwork.com                        See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

We had the pleasure of interviewing EVAN GIIA about her journey in music and upcoming performance at M3F Fest over Zoom video!M3F Fest, North America's most celebrated non-profit music festival, has announced the lineup for the highly-anticipated 2023 edition at Margaret T. Hance Park in downtown Phoenix, Arizona from March 3-4. M3F donates 100% of festival proceeds to charity with a record $1.2 million donated last year and $4.4 million donated since 2004.Beyond the lineup, M3F has also announced the launch of its new M3F Fund. Expanding on their current charity focus, the festival has opened up funding to the public by offering an open application to non-profit or 501(c)(3) organizations that have clear objectives and a measurable way to assess progress. All organizations must submit a detailed plan of the requested amount of funding and how it will be allocated and a project timeline. The festival prioritizes funding related to the four primary pillars of its organization, which are Community, Education, Arts, and Environment. This expanded approach also provides more transparency to attendees with an updated process that requires organizations to provide a more detailed list of how they intend to use the funds, following up throughout the year to check in on where donations went to and creating a short video that details how the money was spent once. Attendees also play a key role in the M3F Fund. When fans buy a ticket to have a great time with their friends, they are also giving back to the community around them.M3F's lineup will once again bring together an eclectic group of artists across the worlds of indie, pop, R&B, electronic, and more. This includes the beloved Grammy-nominated vocalist Maggie Rogers, forward-thinking English beatmaker and producer Jamie xx, French electronic duo Polo & Pan, Detroit singer Quinn XCII, and the off-kilter sounds of the multi-talented Toro y Moi.Additional highlights include and German disco & house producer Purple Disco Machine, Mom + Pop signee Ashe, Nashville indie-rockers COIN, Connecticut pop and electronic singer Chelsea Cutler, the addicting sounds of Canadian indie favorites Peach Pit, Australian electronic producer Hayden James, Brit Awards “Best Dance Act” winner Becky Hill, and much more.Originally spawned as a team-building exercise for its producers, Wespac Construction, the festival acts as a philanthropic flagship for the City of Phoenix. The 2022 edition of M3F raised 1.2 million for charity, which doubled the amount of their previous edition in 2020. This included donations to organizations like the Music Therapy Program from Phoenix Children's Hospital, Habitat for Humanity, Backline, Artist Advocacy Foundation, United Way, Arizona Helping Hands, Saving Amy, and more.M3F also partnered with Tonic to put on a block party in Phoenix to kick off Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event was free and featured music from Whethan, Surf Mesa, and thom.ko. This partnership with Tonic will see them donate $1 from every can sold in the state of Arizona during October to the Wendt Family Breast Cancer Program at St. Joseph's. Donations will ensure community members have access to the best breast cancer care possible, allowing more patients to receive life-saving treatment.Beyond music and charity, M3F also focuses its attention on sustainability with over 80% of waste being recycled each year. On February 27 the people who run Joe Biden intend to give the corrupt W.H.O. complete control of “pandemic” responses in the United States. Episode 652: What if we have our own revival? The Asbury Revival is still going strong--though the University says it's going to wind it down--and it seems like an act of renewal driven by the Holy Spirit. Attendees are in tears, in smiles and feeling the Spirit. Yes, it's a thrill. I am going to share with you some sings of mine-revivals I have been blessed to witness and hear about. While they are smaller in scope, they happen every day and are no less a sign of God working in our midst than what happened at Asbury. And, this nation better pray for more revivals given what's coming, which I explain in Episode 653. What does God say? The Holy Spirit dwells within those who follow the Lord Jesus and keep his commandsJohn 14:15-17Jesus Promises the Holy Spirit15 “If you love me, keep my commands. 16 And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another advocate to help you and be with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth. The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him. But you know him, for he lives with you and will be[a] in you.“Mountain Top” experiences like Asbury are grand and they are not the reality of Christian life. The Lord Jesus tells us we will face troubles in this life. It's in struggling where we get to experience the grace of God. 1 Peter 4:12-19Suffering for Being a Christian12 Dear friends, do not be surprised at the fiery ordeal that has come on you to test you, as though something strange were happening to you. 13 But rejoice in as much as you participate in the sufferings of Christ, so that you may be overjoyed when his glory is revealed. 14 If you are insulted because of the name of Christ, you are blessed, for the Spirit of glory and of God rests on you. 15 If you suffer, it should not be as a murderer or thief or any other kind of criminal, or even as a meddler. 16 However, if you suffer as a Christian, do not be ashamed, but praise God that you bear that name. 17 For it is time for judgment to begin with God's household; and if it begins with us, what will the outcome be for those who do not obey the gospel of God? 18 And,“If it is hard for the righteous to be saved, what will become of the ungodly and the sinner?”[a]19 So then, those who suffer according to God's will should commit themselves to their faithful Creator and continue to do good.Study: Recent Grads Claim Higher Ed Didn't Prepare Them Emotionally for the Transition to Workasked 1,005 young professionals between the ages of 22 and 28 about their emotional well-being” North Korea Defector Compares ‘Woke' Education in America to Regime She Escaped”Show AdvertisersAlan's Soaps https://alanssoaps.com/TODD Use coupon code ‘TODD' to save an additional 10% off the bundle price. This episode is worth 0.5 BACB Supervision CEs - http://ow.ly/N6HJ50MI6o3 - Today Dr. Nasiah Cirincione-Ulezi speaks with Dr. Natalie Williams Awodeha for this podcast CE Event. Recent data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that 11.2% of adults aged 18 years and over report regular feelings of worry, nervousness, or anxiety (Clark et al. 2019). To effectively assess and address turnover in ABA workplace settings, additional research is needed that goes beyond the surface, exploring the ways in which work environments may serve as a source of trauma for staff in ABA settings. Mental disorders are often diagnosed in young adulthood, and research states the adolescent brain, specifically, the prefrontal cortex is not fully developed until as late as 25 years old (Arain, 2013). Although age is not a demographic reported by the BACB, anecdotal reports suggest many RBTs, BCaBAs, practicum students, and new BCBAs fall within this late adolescent stage, as entry-level and early career professionals. It is incumbent upon supervisors to understand the role of trauma and the impact of Adverse Child Experiences (ACEs), among other life experiences, on mental and physical health, considering the high rates of mental health concerns among adult populations. In this presentation, attendees will explore resources, including Mental Health First Aid certification, help supervisors identify and intervene with supervisees while staying within their scope of competence. Attendees will identify ways to mitigate potential triggers in the workplace to create psychologically safe environments for supervisees. Attendees will also discuss the impact of culturally responsive trauma-informed supervision on client outcomes in ABA settings. The presenter will share relevant research, in addition to personal narratives from the presenter's lived experiences. -- If you have questions, comments, feedback, or suggestions, please reach out to operantinnovations@abatechnologies.com

Patrick Bryant is a serial entrepreneur, professional speaker, and co-founder and CEO of software product agency CODE/+/TRUST. After co-founding Go To Team, Patrick launched six multi-million-dollar companies, in media, and software. Patrick shares wisdom gained from his experience in start-ups, his origin as a journalist, what he accomplished in video, and the CODE/+/TRUST “BHAG” for powering startups around the U.S. He discusses culture, scaling, storytelling, and how the first thing for an entrepreneur to do is to start.https://bit.ly/TLP-343   Key Takeaways [1:15] If you have listened to every episode of The Leadership Podcast, please contact Jan and Jim to let them know. They would love to hear it and there might be something in it for you! [2:27] Most people don't know that Patrick owns a rolling paper company that he started after investing in a cigar company. Most people know him from software, media, and other things, like speaking. [3:40] Patrick's always getting into unexpected situations. He just keeps showing up for work and looking for interesting things. He's curious and asks questions. His original profession was journalism and he learned to study industries and areas of interest to him. Many times, it results in a business idea. When he sees an opportunity, he strikes it. [6:07] Patrick believes entrepreneurship is the number one change agent in the world. It is amazingly helpful to society to do something new and do it right. [7:19] There are businesses that are built to scale and others that are not. In a field, you may have grass, bushes, and a large oak tree. The large oak tree did not start as a blade of grass! It takes time to know the “species” of businesses. Patrick started the video company, Go To Team, 25 years ago. It has 16 offices around the U.S. It hit a $1 million valuation when it was 10 years old. That felt great to Patrick! [8:43] Another company that started the same week as Go To Team is Google. In 10 years, Google had been publicly traded and people were using its name as a verb! Patrick wondered what he was doing wrong. He started to study innovation scale — how to build companies and products that are built to move quickly in a big way and be sold around the world. That pushed Patrick toward software. [9:58] Scaling is different between software and service companies. A service company can go a long time with continued operation, but not a lot of growth. A software product requires investments and a certain level of sales. If the sales don't come, it's over. The money's gone and the investors aren't going to pour more money into the company. There is risk involved in software. [12:43] Journalism, television, and all media have changed greatly since the start of the internet. There is confusion and fragmentation. Patrick foresees us slowly getting back to moderation and looking for experts and gatekeepers we can trust to provide us with the content we want in the way we want it. We don't yet have the new Walter Cronkite or Tom Brokaw. [15:39] Patrick's company, CODE/+/TRUST, sells code and trust. They help people start software companies. Their “BHAG” is to power 500 software startups in every state in the U.S. and be an official software development firm for entrepreneurs. They want to connect with good ideas, spend a lot of time on them, grow them, feel good about what they produce, and help entrepreneurs make money. [18:41] First and foremost, get one thing right. You can have multiple ways to attack a problem but you can only have one mission. The mission and values cannot change. [19:15] Patrick is working on a TEDx speech for March on the schizophrenic nature of advice to entrepreneurs. For instance, Winston Churchill's message of never giving up contrasts with the advice to fail fast. All leaders need to understand this: mission and values do not move. We are not giving up on our mission. Tactics and goals that don't get us there need to be stopped. [21:51] Patrick's big “Aha” moment is that not all advice is equal. Advice from your Grandma on how to live a good life might be great, but her advice on how to run your business might not be great. Where does the advice come from? How does it work with your core values? [23:14] Advice can be great for one individual that's not great for the next one. Patrick is a value investor. He likes to buy stocks that are low, for the long term. That's what he reads about. Blogs about day trade opportunities are not useful advice for him. Patrick says that if every CEO learned the right way to take advice, they would be the last 10% of “amazing.” It's one of the hardest things. [25:34] Patrick separates User Experience from Customer Experience or navigating the software from working the sales funnel. Patrick focuses on providing customers with what they need, not what they want. Henry Ford said that if he asked his customers what they wanted, they would have said, “a faster horse.” We have to have the view that we know some things about where the customer wants to go. [27:05] Patrick's business partner, CTO at CODE/+/TRUST, does software design. He's opinionated and will stand his ground in a positive way with customers because he believes he knows where the customer is trying to go. Designers must come to the discussion with views on what they believe for the customer. Patrick shares the surprising results of a Lay's Potato Chip survey and taste test. [28:59] The Lay's experience illustrates the way that we have to come to the process, which is customer first, but educated on how to make it as simple and clean and smooth an experience for them as possible, almost regardless of what they think. [30:38] Event.gives is a company of Patrick's in the non-profit space. Attendees fill out their profiles and can then move from event to event without re-entering their data. Nonprofits argued that it is their data, but Patrick points out that individuals own their data, and they are the ones with the right to release it to the non-profit. Always go back to the individual and what their rights and choices are. [33:20] Software and media for kids have the added responsibility of providing them with reasonable opportunities for learning. Patrick always tries to start at the core mission, protecting people's privacy, and allowing them the right to control their data. [34:53] As a journalist, Patrick learned that it's all about telling stories. Master storytellers influence in positive ways. The slogan for Go To Team for years was Passionate Storytellers. Storytelling is a helpful skill that allows you to communicate the data that you want and to emotionally connect with people. The goal is to be ordinarily extraordinary in your storytelling so people connect with your message. [36:29] Patrick explains how to use storytelling to make products socially contagious by connecting the brand to the customer's lifestyle. [37:32] Do not put your story in an email! How you tell your story depends on who the audience is. Patrick has run a video company for 25 years. He recommends using video to tell your story. It connects to people in a much more important way than the written word. Engaging with people in person and telling your story on stage is incredibly emotional and powerful. Connect with people in person. [39:30] Making people laugh and tugging at their heartstrings brings them along with the story. Use emotion to motivate people, educate them, and make them get excited. [41:59] Patrick refers to himself as a made entrepreneur. He doesn't have to go to work tomorrow and his basic life needs will be taken care of. Like many of his peers and friends, Patrick enjoys the fight. He enjoys being in the company. He enjoys starting new things. He enjoys the idea stage and helping others and finding connections with the product-market fit. He keeps coming back for that super joy. [42:55] When a company gets to have between 10 and 20 employees and people start asking Patrick about policies, that's his sign to go and start a new company. He doesn't want to write policies and procedures around when you get off of work and what days are holidays. He doesn't think that way. Starting another company re-energizes him to go attack the next idea. [43:51] As Patrick grows a company, and adds people, he's thrilled by it. He loves it. The mission still stands and the values are great. He can't wait to see the team execute on the goal. But it's no longer energizing for him. Starting the rollercoaster over is what he loves. [45:27] Patrick's closing thoughts, to anyone in a transition stage, just get started. Look for something that you can develop expertise in. What one thing can you do to sell that expertise and move forward an idea in that particular industry, right now, today? “That's my core advice, just get started.” [47:59] Closing quote: Remember, “Trust is the glue of life. It's the most essential ingredient in effective communication. It's the foundational principle that holds all relationships.” — Steven Covey   Quotable Quotes “Well, I don't know how you could follow my path. I had the interesting time of being on the Mall two years ago, here in Washington D.C., where I am today, for January 6. I think of myself as a little bit of a Forrest Gump. I don't know how I get into some of these situations!” “I'm just curious. I ask people questions. As a journalist for many years of my life, … I just learned to study and get my head around industries and areas of interest of mine. And many times, that results in a business idea. And when I see opportunity, I strike it.” “Just start something, just talk to someone, just learn what someone needs. … I just don't understand why entrepreneurs … can't just take an opportunity and run with it. … So that's my number one piece of advice … find something you're interested in and get started.” “I believe entrepreneurship is the number one change agent in the world. I say it on stages around the United States. I just believe that as entrepreneurs, we are doing something profound and exciting when we are developing a new product … or bringing out a new process.” “The best way to make money is to make somebody else more money. That, to me, is where relationships come in and you're helping someone move forward as an entrepreneur.” “If you show up to help other people and do the good, right thing, you will have business for as long as you can see it because people will acknowledge and trust you and want to work with you on what they need.” “You can have multiple goals; … multiple tactics; … multiple ways that you're attacking a problem but you can only have one mission. You can have core values that support how you're going to move forward with that mission. The mission and the values can't change.” “Advice can be great for one individual that's not great for the next one.” “The way that we have to come at the process … is, customer first, but educated on how to make it as simple and clean and smooth an experience for them as possible, almost regardless of what they think.” “With storytelling and laughter, camaraderie, and building a culture that people really want to be there; they really want to help move the mission forward, you can get people going 60, 70 miles per hour without a lot of effort.” “Every time I get to a place of success, I immediately start thinking, ‘Man, it would be cool to go back to the beginning. How can we do this again?' It's just so much fun to start the rollercoaster over!”   Resources Mentioned Theleadershippodcast.com Sponsored by: Darley.com Rafti Advisors. LLC Self-Reliant Leadership. For this edition we turn our attention to the World Economic Forum's annual meeting in Davos Switzerland, headed by none other than its notorious Chairman, Klaus Schwab. Attendees are the elites of the world, the rich and powerful, mixed with politicians and media. Chris Kuhlmann highlights their unwritten moto: good for thee, but not for me, which plays out vividly by looking at the shear number of private jets used to make the trip to this small location. One flight in particular covered a mere 13 miles. The so-called carbon footprint makes Bigfoot look like a toddler. Chris explains a key policy they push, Stake Holder Theory, is the foundation of ESG (Environmental Social Governance). Through ESG the WEF is working to control the world through commerce by generating policies that influence and govern commerce using climate and vaccine passports. And when you have a group like the WEF which is not faith based at all, but rather a bunch cultish, humanistic, environmentalist radicals, you have demonic influence full bore. This organizations has a simple strategy:   Create the crisis, trumpet the crisis, raise the alarm bells, reach hysterical feverish pitches Tell the world the only solution is for them to gain control to save the plant, save the children, save the world Gain the money, influence and authority to mandate their proposed solutions Enforce their solutions and punish those who push back   In my book, I would say we are somewhere between 3 and 4. Their agenda easily sets the stage for the coming Anti-Christ and the Beast System. www.weforum.org     CREDITS Host: Chris Kuhlmann Produced by: Shaun Griffin Music composed by JD Kuhlmann Art: Shaun Griffin Sound: Chris Kuhlmann and Shaun Griffin   America First Insurance Group (833) 594-0004 Main Life Insurance: 855-229-9557 Auto and everything else: 833-777-1231 www.americafirstinsurance.org America First Insurance Group Insuring your life. Protecting your liberty.   Questions? We're so excited we're about to bust at the seams. Because we've been invited to present at the ABA (yes, that's the American Bar Association) Dispute Resolution Spring Conference in Las Vegas in May. Advocating for the profession of divorce coaching is one of our core values and we're thrilled to be able to raise awareness about the great work you're doing for families! And we're going to talk about you! The title of our presentation is:How Divorce Coaching Prepares Individuals for Effective Conflict Resolution. Why is this such a big deal you ask? Because, according to the ABA website, this is the "largest ADR conference in the world. Attendees gather to learn the latest in dispute resolution techniques and trends, exchange ideas with the experts and their peers, and strengthen professional relationships. The conference is the meeting place for dispute resolution leaders, mediators, arbitrators, ombuds, judges, attorney advocates, court administrators, neutral providers, ADR consumers, and legal educators."The theme of the conference is Leading Change Through ADR: Strategies for Navigating Our World Today  and they asked us to answer the question "How can our community lead the way towards empowerment and self-advocacy?"Empowerment and self-advocacy? That's our wheelhouse! What an amazing opportunity to have the chance to speak to such a diverse and important group of ADR professionals about the value of professional divorce coaching. When individuals have the personal support they need to engage in the process with the necessary skills to resolve conflict, negotiate, and get to agreement, the ADR community as a whole benefits. No matter which ADR process our clients participate in, they are more likely to show up with the skills to manage emotions, de-escalate conflict and productively move toward resolution.Win-Win! And what a way to celebrate the new year!Want to learn more about the conference? Bryan Anthony Rhoden pleaded not guilty Monday morning in the killing of three people in July 2021 at Pinetree Country Club, Cobb County District Attorney Flynn Broady said. Rhoden, 25, is facing the death penalty for his alleged role in the kidnapping and slaying of Paul Pierson, 76, of Kansas, and Henry Valdez, 46, of California. He is accused of binding the two men in Jonesboro, driving them to the Kennesaw golf course and shooting them there. The third victim — Gene Siller, who worked as Pinetree's golf pro — is believed by investigators to have been shot and killed because he came upon an active crime when he went to investigate a truck on the course. Monday was Rhoden's first court appearance since August, when prosecutors entered their formal notice they would seek the death penalty. Rhoden's attorneys Joshua Moore and Emily Prokesch of the Georgia Public Defender Council's death penalty division said at the time they expected to plead not guilty. To celebrate and thank essential workers, the Meeting Park neighborhood in Marietta hosted its third annual Big Thank You event on Dec. 12. The event — organized by four Meeting Park residents — was an all-day affair that invited workers, from firefighters to EMTs to delivery drivers, to enjoy a free breakfast of doughnuts and coffee, and Subway sandwiches for lunch. Workers left with goodie bags and Chick-fil-A gift cards. Meeting Park is made up of townhomes and cluster homes, and is located just a couple of blocks southeast of Marietta Square. Four people served on the Big Thank You organizing committee: Brazil, Jan Chandler, Wendy Rivera and Marilyn Milly. Chandler first thought of the idea amidst the pandemic in 2020, when the efforts of essential workers were especially needed and appreciated. The first Big Thank You was celebrated that year. The Meeting Park committee called upon its residents to donate money, baked goods, gift cards and volunteer time for the event. Residents and workers alike broke bread together in the neighborhood's pocket park. In the future, Chandler would like to host the event seasonally so the community workers can be celebrated four times a year, as opposed to once during the holidays. Attendees included school board members, City Council members and more, according to Chandler. Leftover food was donated to The Zone, a local nonprofit that aids people in recovery from opioid addiction. Rows of shiny new bikes — 100 in all — filled the Green Acres Elementary School gym waiting to be claimed by the students who had earned the new wheels. When the honored Green Acres students walked into the gym, sat down on the floor and gazed up at the sparkling new bikes, they did not know they would soon be taking one of the bikes home. Green Acres Principal Ashley Mize stood amid the 100 bikes when she surprised the students with the announcement that they earned one of the new 20-inch bikes because of their commitment to positive character traits through the Grand Slam incentive. Teachers selected the 1-3 grade students based on their positive attendance record, classroom work habits, excellent behavior and citizenship, which included showing a positive attitude, empathy, best effort, being a team player and respectful. Academy Sports provided the bikes through their partnership with the Atlanta Braves. The bike giveaway was the finale to the Atlanta Braves Season of Giving campaign at Green Acres, which brought more than 40 volunteers to the school, plus the National League's Rookie of the Year, Michael Harris II. Volunteers helped the Green Acre students write their names on the bike of their choice. Some students could not resist trying out their ride and the accompanying Academy Sports helmet or hat. The Green Acres Grand Slam students were not the only ones surprised during the gifting finale. One of Principal Mize's favorite memories of the Season of Giving day was surprising a teacher with a two-night stay in a luxury suite at an Omni hotel. A representative from Omni Hotels surprised fourth-grade teacher Monica Brooks with the news that she won a relaxing couple of days inside a luxury suite. The Omni representative had one more surprise for Green Acres. After all of Principal Mize's work to surprise students and staff and coordinate the volunteer activities that benefited the school, Omni had a surprise for the Green Acres principal. Like Brooks, Principal Mize also won a two-night stay at the Omni Hotel.   Nicholas Bos of Marietta, a member of Boy Scout Troop #675, recently earned the honor of Eagle Scout, the highest rank that the Boy Scouts offers. Only 4% of Boy Scout members ever attain this prestigious honor. Bos, 17, a student in Wheeler High Sch
