Kat Walsh from Creative Commons joins us to talk about the history of Creative Commons as a 'hack on copyright.' Marc Weidenbaum speaks on the history of the Disquiet Junto, a long-running online distributed community creating new music in response to a weekly online composition challenge. Episode notes, credits and transcript In this season of the podcast we're working in collaboration with the Engelberg Center on Innovation Law and Policy at NYU Law. In addition to our usual crop of artists and programmers we're adding in legal scholars to help us unpack some of the thorny issues for those working in art and code as they unleash their work into the world. In this episode we dive into the world of Creative Commons, which is now over 20 years old. It is both an organization as well as a collection of copyright licenses used by artists, musicians, writers, directors and creators worldwide to communicate to the world how they want their work shared and potentially to be used as a source to build upon. We also speak to Marc Weidenbaum, founder and steward of the Disquiet Junto, an online “community of practice.” Each week Marc sends out an email newsletter with a creative prompt, consisting of a title, and instructions. These instructions may read like a Fluxus event score, a recipe in sound, a concept or technical description. Those who choose to participate create a single piece of music, then post it online, to be shared, listened to and potentially discussed by the online community. Marc has been leading Disquiet Junto since 2012, and from the beginning has encouraged participants to share their work with Creative Commons licenses. In fact the creative re-use of Creative Commons licensed sound and music has often been an integral part of Disquiet Junto creative prompts. Guests Kat Walsh is the General Counsel at Creative Commons. She has a nearly 20-year history in the free and open culture movements, including many years on the boards of the Wikimedia Foundation and the Free Software Foundation, and has previously worked in library policy, technology startups, and online community management. As General Counsel, she oversees the legal support for all aspects of CC's activities, provides strategic input, leads the stewardship of CC's legal tools, and advises the organization on new programmatic initiatives. image description: a black and white image of Marc looking to the right. He has dark hair and a close cropped beard, wearing a high collared knit sweater and black frame glasses. Marc Weidenbaum founded the website Disquiet.com in 1996 at the intersection of sound, art, and technology, and since 2012 has moderated the Disquiet Junto, an active online community of weekly music/sonic projects that explore constraints as a springboard for creativity and productivity. This week, Professor David Boelzner and AmeriCorps Legal Fellow (though soon-to-be Professor!) Caleb Stone joined Scott and Davis to talk about their work at the law school's Lewis P. Fuller Veterans Benefits Clinic. They discussed the clinic's vital role in helping disabled service veterans obtain compensation through the often-arduous VA claims process, outlined the opportunities for students to work with the clinic both during the semester and for summer employment, and offered their own structural reform ideas that could make the disability benefits system work better for the men and women who have nobly served in America's armed forces. The clinic is an integral component of William & Mary Law School, both for the important representation it offers deserving veterans and the hands-on learning experience it offers law students—tune in to hear the real experts explain in greater detail!

SpeakPanther Talks Moving to Mexico, the Collaborative Process, Alt-Right White Rappers, and Performs a Medley of “Trap 3d” and “Distill”This week we welcome back two friends of the show that went on to form a group together. Speak is an unpredictable and mischievous rapper that I've watched grow up. We met when he was just seventeen on a road trip to a rap battle in the Bay Area. Since then I've watched him adapt and readjust to the ever changing rap scene. He moved to Mexico after a revealing hallucinogenic experience. This new record puts his cultural growth and expanding maturity on display.Dream Panther is Greg Sheran's open ended alias. Sometimes it's a group, sometimes it's a solo project. Before moving to Detroit, KN alum Caleb Stone was in the group for a while when he was living with Speak. During this time Greg and Speak began toying with the idea of making an album together.SpeakPanther is the result of a few very intense studio sessions spread out over a few months. As Greg put it, “it was a really fast, and slow process.” With Speak in Mexico, and Greg in LA, they'd work whirlwind sessions during the short stints Speak was back in the States. Greg would often make beats on the fly while Speak would listen and write. The album, in turn, is cohesive and tightly constructed. Speak's intensity and verbosity fit like puzzle pieces with Greg's laid back vibes and willingness to listen.Listen below as we talk about Speak's move to Mexico, the SpeakPanther process, and alt-right white rappers.–Lee See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Dream Panther brought Pell to my attention last week. Then I serendipitously got a text from our dude Caleb Stone saying he was interested in doing the show. Have to admit, I was sleeping. Checked out his music and videos and they're great. While showing wisdom beyond his years, he effortlessly transitions between rapping and singing. Caleb Stone Talks Ringo Starr Influence, Getting Expelled, and Purposefully Flunking ADD Exams In A Revealing ConversationCaleb stone is a multi-instrumentalist producer. He frequently works with previous guests Speak, Pell, and Dream Panther. His solo tapes are great, and so is his work rappers and singers like Kali Uchis. As a kid he'd flunk ADD tests on purpose, and got expelled from boarding school. Surprisingly Ringo Starr was a huge influence.–Lee See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
