In this episode of Excess Returns, hosts Jack Forehand and Justin Carbonneau sit down with Jacob Pozharny, partner at Bridgeway Capital Management, to explore the increasingly important role of intangible assets in modern investing. Jacob breaks down what intangible assets are - from intellectual property and proprietary algorithms to brand value and customer relationships - and explains how these harder-to-measure assets are changing traditional investment approaches. He discusses Bridgeway's pioneering research on "intangible intensity" and how it affects their investment strategy, particularly for high vs. low intangible companies. Key topics covered: How intangible assets complicate traditional valuation metrics Why sentiment analysis matters more for high-intangible companies The implications of AI for intangible asset valuation Bridgeway's approach to long-short investing International investing opportunities and market efficiency The importance of understanding model assumptions and staying humble as an investor Whether you're interested in quantitative investing, understanding modern valuation frameworks, or keeping up with evolving market dynamics, this conversation offers valuable insights into how one of the industry's leading firms approaches these challenges. From Navy SEAL to Private Contractor: The Journey of Daniel Corbett In this gripping episode, Marcus and Melanie sit down with Daniel Corbett, a former elite Navy SEAL operator turned private military contractor. Daniel takes us through his fascinating journey from joining the Navy in 2002, right out of high school, to serving in some of the most renowned and secretive SEAL Teams, including SEAL Team 5, SEAL Team 6, and SEAL Team 17. Hear about his deployment to Iraq in 2005, his global missions with SEAL Team 6, and his experiences instructing the next generation of SEALs at the Naval Special Warfare Basic Training Command. We also delve into Daniel's transition from active duty to private military contracting—a world where high-stakes missions take on new meaning. Daniel shares the story of his 2017 arrest in Belgrade, Serbia, where he was imprisoned for eighteen months. Now back in the States, Daniel continues to apply his expertise in unconventional problem-solving for clients in need of unique solutions. Whether he's monitoring international events or getting unexpected phone calls, Daniel's post-military career is anything but ordinary. Tune in for an inside look at one of the most high-stakes careers on the planet, and hear firsthand what it takes to thrive as a SEAL, contractor, and global problem-solver. In This Episode You Will Hear: • [Growing up] We lived in Germany. My dad was stationed there. We'd just drive around and see castles. It was cool. (3:06) • What got me [to join the SEAL teams] is that they interviewed one operator, and he goes “What makes you guys so good?” The team guy responded with: “It's not that we're that good, it's just that everybody else sucks.” (6:35) • [Marcus] Q: What do you think the best job in the SEAL teams is? Best rank. [Daniel} A: E5 Mafia. Cause you have some power, but you're not responsible for shit. (9:47) • I was a triathlete and cross-country runner. (13:39) • [Marcus] There's a thing that we don't talk about. It's not in the books or the documentaries. You sign up knowing you're gonna fail all the time, so naturally, you wanna be a shit bag. (18:16) • I'm the man at weddings, because I do bring my sewing kit. Buttons? I got you. (23:55) • I was a young hot shot guy. I was at the squadron. It's nice, but nothing has ever compared to when I had a Platoon OIC, LPO or chief come up and say “Hey, these kids you put through CPC, they're awesome. You did a really good job.” (26:34) • I coined the terms: “Falsely Intuitive.” (29:18) • [Melanie – While escorting cargo ships] Q: What would you do if pirates did roll up on you? [Daniel] A: Get on the Bridgeway and take your iron sight, and try your best. (34:25) • In Belgrade, Serbia, I was arrested and locked up. I wasn't charged for 11 months. I looked up, and there was a 21 year old kid with a gun pointed at my head, terrified. I could hear the magazine springs rattling with his finger on the trigger. And I'm like “After all the stuff I've done. Not like this.” (35:49) • When I was being interrogated, they asked: “You're not CIA, DEA? You're not here to kill the president?” (37:35) • I came home to $86,000 in debt to the IRS, and a credit score of 530. (43:28) • Love is the antagonist to fear. (46:12) • I know I'm loved. That's really what got me through. (46:26) • There's no responsible journalism anywhere anymore. (48:18) Socials: - IG: american_mercenary - www.danieldavidcorbettiii.com - https://a.co/d/7XstytC

Today on Wake Up Tri-Counties Kewanee Mayor Gary Moore joined us and addressed Wednesday's Kewanee Planning Commission Meeting where the commission voted to approve a permit for a Marijuana Dispensary to go in at the former Broken Chimney location. Wethersfield Superintendent Dr. Andrew Brooks criticized the idea of dispensary being 250 feet from the school. Representatives from Bridgeway also spoke about the dispensary being so close to their treatment center. Mayor Moore addressed these concerns and stated that he supported the dispensary though if most Kewanee residents were to express opposition to the dispensary, the Mayor made it clear that he would vote for what people want as a representative of the people. The Mayor also discussed Monday's Kewanee City Council Meeting.

Have you ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes when a dentist decides to sell their private practice? Welcome to another episode of Financial Flossing, where we unravel the intricacies of dental practice transitions. Today's guest is Todd Blackmar, a transition consultant at Bridgeway Practice Transitions. Join us as we delve into dental practice transitions and gain insights that could shape your journey. . Ross Brannon candidly engages Todd Blackmar in this enlightening episode about dental practice transitions. Todd clarifies that when they talk about transitions, it's not just about change but a pivotal moment for many dentists: selling their private practices. Bridgeway Practice Transitions assists dentists in selling their private practices, paving the way for them to embark on their next chapter of life while offering new dentists a ready patient base. Key Takeaways: ✅ Understanding Dental Practice Transitions: Transitions in the dental world refer to the sale of a dental practice. Bridgeway Practice Transitions facilitates these transitions, ensuring retiring dentists exit with a nest egg while providing a head start to newcomers. ✅ The Bridgeway Approach: Bridgeway focuses on higher volume, lower-priced transactions, emphasizing that every retiring dentist deserves a smooth transition. Their mission is to treat every retiring dentist respectfully and ensure they leave with financial security. ✅ Pricing and Real Estate: Dental practices sold through Bridgeway range in price from $150,000 to several million dollars, with the added value of real estate in some cases. Including real estate makes it easier for banks to provide loans, boosting the overall value of the practice. ✅ Agreements and Transition Period: Bridgeway's agreements are simple and customized to fit individual circumstances. They aim to keep the process straightforward and efficient. The typical transition period lasts 60 to 90 days, similar to buying a house, but can vary depending on the parties involved. ✅ Patient and Staff Retention: The retention of patients and staff during a dental practice transition largely depends on how the buyer handles the process. Proper handling typically results in a high patient retention rate, while staff retention hinges on effective communication and treatment during the transition. How to Reach Todd Blackmar: You can connect with Todd Blackmar and learn more about dental practice transitions through Bridgeway Practice Transitions: Website: Bridgeway Practice Transitions LinkedIn: Todd Blackmar on LinkedIn Please take advantage of this insightful episode as we uncover the nuances of dental practice transitions with Todd Blackmar. John Montgomery, Founder & CEO of Bridgeway Capital Management, manages risk for his clients for a living. However, he noticed long ago that even the most audacious business leaders tend to take much smaller risks outside of business. Given the string of human catastrophes he has watched unfold and learned about in his lifetime, he decided to set the bar higher. Bridgeway, and the non-profit they founded and support, aims to end genocide worldwide. In this Tugboat Institute® talk, John shares the work Bridgeway's foundation has done since its founding to end genocide, first in Africa, and most recently in Ukraine. They were instrumental in making it possible to resume exports of grain from the Ukrainian ports last year, thus protecting millions of people worldwide from famine. Their story proves that even the most audacious goals can be attainable. Listen and be inspired to take a risk for an audacious purpose.
