New York Times bestselling author John Eldredge reveals the path of the "ordinary mystic," and invites readers into the refuge of experiencing deep, lasting, real communion with Jesus. In this present age we are all becoming disciples of the Internet. We are addicted to distraction. We idolize our instant access to a never-ending avalanche of information. We think we're finally holding the keys to a better life. But if that's true, why are we wrestling with ever-increasing levels of anxiety, dissatisfaction, and despair? The fact is, we live in a world of weary, skeptical pragmatism--and it's keeping us from experiencing the God we are dying without. John Eldredge presents a powerful alternative to the soulless, disenchanted world we find ourselves living in today: the path of the ordinary mystic. It was an absolute pleasure to have Tim Dornseif join us in the studio! This moment feels especially meaningful, almost full circle, as just a year ago, Tim listened to a testimony on this very podcast that radically changed his life. You'll have to tune in to hear how God used that story to begin a powerful transformation in his heart. Tim shares his journey with honesty and vulnerability. Raised in Indiana, his family occasionally attended a Lutheran church. He grew up with his mom and stepdad, not meeting his biological father until he was 25. The absence of a strong, present father figure left a deep wound, one that would later surface in painful and self-destructive ways. In his late teens, Tim had a sweet “meet-cute” with his now wife, Tay, while they were both working at Kroger—he in the meat department, she in the bakery. Though painfully shy, a coworker helped make the introduction, and sparks quickly flew. Not long after, they were married, expecting their first son, and relocating to Arizona. Tim began nursing school, and though life was moving forward, the mounting pressure brought old struggles back to the surface. One of those struggles was with pornography, a battle that lingered for years. Though Tim made efforts to be open with Tay and others, he often felt trapped and burdened by secrecy, convinced he couldn't be fully known or accepted. After experiencing deep hurt at a church they had attended for six years, Tim and Tay found themselves at Desert Springs. There, Tim met Bradley Chaddick (his story is linked below) during a VBS event, and that connection became a turning point. For the first time, faith felt real. He no longer felt imprisoned by his sin but instead empowered to take steps toward healing. Through this new season, Tim encountered the Father's love and grace in a way he never had before. Today, he walks in true community with God, with his wife, and with other men, experiencing a freedom and restoration that only Christ can bring.Bradley Chaddick's testimony, Episode 120Kyle Moore's testimony, Episode 123Tuesday night Men's Connect Group at Desert SpringsFathered by God by John Eldredge"Holy Heat" with Seth Tramp + Tim DornseifIf you find yourself struggling with a sexual addiction you are not alone. Though wounds may dim them, Jesus can restore them. Jesus is inviting you to dream with him again and step into your unique, irreplaceable role in his story. What does it really mean to be a man—and why are so many of us afraid to find out?In this powerful episode, Jon & Will sit down with John Eldredge, author of Wild at Heart, to explore the core desires and wounds that shape every man's life. From the boyhood questions “Do you love me?” and “Do I have what it takes?” to the deep need for adventure, battle, mission, and love—John reveals how these longings define our masculine identity. When you set aside your programmed pragmatism and rediscover wonder, life with Jesus takes on a whole new depth. In this episode, John Eldredge shares how technology and the internet constantly fight for your attention and how you can push back by embracing ordinary, mystical moments to connect with God. You'll also hear why prayer, lingering, and turning your heart toward God are essential for your Christian walk.    Key Takeaway   The hyper-rational, left-brain approach to life isn't good for your soul. You were designed to experience beauty, wonder, and connection with God.  There's a battle for your attention and affection, and the world is constantly trying to pull your union with God apart. Turning your heart toward God often comes before intellectual understanding. Learning to linger in God's presence is essential for healing, connection, and repairing your soul in a world programmed for distraction.   John Eldredge   John Eldredge is an author, counselor, teacher, and the president of Wild at Heart. He and his wife, Stasi, have three sons and are proud grandparents. John loves all things beauty, nature, adventure, and more.    Key Quotes   10:35 - " Psalm 91, he who dwells in the shelter of the most high will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. And I think that idea of rest, let your anxiety come down, let the cortisol come down, let the fight or flightcome down a little bit. I think this is a brilliant gospel moment to be able to show people, you know what, you can actually be safe in the love of God, you can actually feel safe in His care and in His protection. If we can get people, back to your thing, if we can get the wonder back. If you can get the cynical adult pragmatism to just put the gun down for a minute and just go, you know what, you can actually take refuge in the presence of God. You will find it to be that lovely fort experience of, I feel good." 38:54 - "You sit with another human being and look eye to eye and listen to one another, it literally heals the human brain. It is a healing experience to your physiology to listen with compassion and to be listened to with compassion. That's just basic human connection."   Links from Today's Conversation   Send a Voice Message to DadAwesome Apply to join the next DadAwesome Accelerator Cohort: Email awesome@dadawesome.org   Subscribe to DadAwesome Messages: Text the word “Dad” to (651) 370-8618 Experience Jesus. In the beautiful, kind words of a spiritual father, John shares stories about how he healed while raising his own kids, and what that healing did for how he started to relate to and experience the love of Abba in his own life. He also describes his own spiritual journey as having walked through what he calls “wardrobe doors,” a nod to C.S. Out of the millions of men I've worked with over the last 10 years, I've heard everything from a deep disdain and animosity towards God and Jesus to a rich and abiding love for His word. For me, I fall somewhere in the middle as I wrestle with my own relationship with Him and towards my faith and spirituality. And, that's the reason I really wanted to talk with a huge influence in my life, John Eldredge. Today, John and I cover what faith and spirituality really look like, how the distraction era has hampered our ability to draw close to Christ, whether or not Church is necessary on the path of spirituality, why finding truth is challenging but worth the struggle, how the “Doctrine of Popular Culture” gets it all wrong and how, maybe for the first time ever, you can experience Jesus. What happens to our relationship with God in the midst of suffering? How do we stay connected to Jesus when we are walking through pain?Author John Eldredge has been guiding people through practices that can help keep us in union with Christ, especially when the pain of life threatens to erode our connection. He has seen the ways in which the enemy will attempt to break our spirit and discourage us and how Christ longs to bring hope and healing to our souls. He has taken these lessons from his own life, throughout his counseling career and ministry, and what he sees now as a spiritual father to many and has written a book called Experience Jesus. Really: Finding Refuge, Strength, and Wonder through Everyday Encounters with God. In it, he shares habits and spiritual practices that will offer readers the refuge of experiencing deep, lasting, real communion with Jesus. In this insightful episode, Davey and John talk about how we can begin to let go the weight of our cares and entrust them to God, the ways in which our agreements with the lies of the enemy can prolong our suffering, and why we need daily reminders of truth as we heal. If you struggle to stay connected to Jesus in times of pain and heartache, this conversation will teach you ways that you can reconnect with the one who wants to bring you hope and healing. Are we too left-brained for our own good? In one of the most powerful conversations ever on The 1000 Hours Outside Podcast, John Eldredge unpacks how modern life has stripped us of mystery, beauty, and true refuge. We are being discipled—not by faith, but by the internet—trained to expect instant answers while losing our ability to linger, wonder, and believe. Eldredge shares how our screens shape our souls, why beauty is an essential balm for the weary, and the surprising reason why children instinctively build forts.
