This week on The Green Rush, Anne Donohoe and Nick Opich are back with a new episode with Olivia Mannix, Founder and CEO of Felicity Pharma, a biotech company focused on drug development for the treatment of mood disorders in women, working with novel compounds to create solutions for various female-specific disorders. After founding one of the first ancillary cannabis marketing companies Cannabrand in 2013, Olivia pivoted to the psychedelics industry in 2020 with a focus on utilizing psychedelic compounds to develop targeted female therapeutics and address the unmet medical needs of women with hormone-related mood disorders, overlooked by modern medicine. In this episode our hosts chat with Olivia about her entry into the psychedelic space, where Felicity Pharma is at with its current research and funding to date as well as the appalling lack of inclusion women face in the drug development process. In addition, this episode covers breaking the stigma and fears around psychedelics for new patients and the unique biological factors that come into play when researching and testing drugs specifically targeted at women. So sit back and enjoy our conversation with Olivia Mannix of Felicity Pharma. Fueled by increased legalization across the world, the cannabis market is projected to grow from $10.3 billion in 2018 to $39.4 billion by 2023. As James Higdon wrote for Politico, 2019 could be marijuana's biggest year yet as “a green tide in Congress” shows signs that pot could be legal across the U.S. soon. New use cases for medical marijuana and products infused with cannabidiol (or CBD, which is non-psychoactive) have also aided in acceptance of the drug. This all points to huge opportunities for cannabis companies to market themselves to new audiences.Still, there are issues. In some states, cannabis is only legal in certain jurisdictions. And major social networks have prohibited advertising cannabis products. Even the first TV ad for a cannabis product, launched in 2015 by cannabis marketing agency Cannabrand, got pulled at the last minute and never aired.Forced to tread lightly and work around these restrictions, cannabis marketers have gotten creative, providing case studies for launching innovative social strategies under pressure. Here's how they're making it work and striking gold – or green – in this new Wild Wild West of marketing. This time we speak to John McCartney, Managing Director, Wise Public Relations, Inc. | President, PRSA San Francisco Bay Area Chapter. John has engineered a number of campaigns for the cannabis industry. The podcast is in partnership with the BCMA. Hayley wrote a story for VICE about sexism in the cannabis industry, and in particular, the advertising strategies of one particular brand, Ignite Cannabis Company. Founded by Instagram-famous Dan Bilzerian - who amassed his following by posting photos of a lavish lifestyle that includes him posing with guns and half-naked women - Ignite seems to be doubling down on the "sex sells" mentality while other cannabis brands trend toward more inclusive messaging. So Hayley calls up Olivia Mannix, co-founder and CEO of Denver-based marketing firm Cannabrand, to talk more in-depth about the dynamics and difficulties of weed advertising.
