Chris Smead co-directed a documentary called HIGHLINE, which follows the 10 day hike of five friends on the Highline Trail in the northern Utah mountains. Along with the hike, the film also reflects on each man’s personal journey as well as the history of the trail itself. In this episode, we discuss how the film came to be and the challenges of filming in such a remote location with crazy weather patterns and continuous high altitude. If you need a little solace from the off trail blues, the streaming release was yesterday, April 7th.

For most of human history, we lived in wild places. Ten days. Five friends. One trek across Utah's Uinta Highline Trail. Watch as the ancient history of the trail is woven together with the personal history of each of the hikers as they get back in touch with the world, and each other. This is the topic of today's episode, as I sit down with Chris Smead, Producer, Cameraman, Director and straight up rad dude, to talk about the filming and hiking of the Uinta Highline Trail. The Uinta Highline Trail is an east to west, 104 mile long trail that truly is a special place. It's also a much lesser known trail in comparison to many of the trail throughout the country. But full of rich history, amazing views, high altitude and more, it's a trail that ought to be on any hikers bucket list. I talk with Chris through the episode to break down the "Highline" documentary film that premiered in Vernal, UT on Friday January 24, 2020. It features 5 hikers from all types of backgrounds and shares their stories and their time on the Highline trail. This film is worth your time to check out. - Highline Film: http://www.highlinefilm.com - Outmersive Films: http://www.outmersivefilms.com Got questions about the podcast or want to share some feedback? This podcast is about photography and filmmaking in the backcountry. It used to be that creating professional photography and video content in the mountains required thirty or more pounds of gear. Not anymore. An explosion of innovation over the last few years means that you can now tell stories and capture adventures with a high degree of quality while maintaining a low pack weight and a minimalist mindset. In this episode, Andrew and Ryan dig deep into the tools, skills, and philosophy you’ll need to enhance your backcountry photography and filmmaking skills. They get started by immediately jumping into the interview: an engaging and energetic discussion with filmmaker and ultralight backpacker Chris Smead. Chris’ film “Alcove” won the audience choice award at the inaugural Backpacking Light Film Festival in 2017, and he’s been creating non-stop ever since.  After the interview, Ryan and Andrew take a deep dive into camera gear and content creation strategies. What makes a camera well suited for adventure filmmaking and photography? What are the different options? How do your choices affect the outcome of your final product?  What is the most efficient way to improve photography and filmmaking skills? What are the best ways to spend a limited budget? All these questions and more are answered.  The Gear and Hiker Hack sections are concerned with batteries and power sources—how to charge them, how to keep them charged, and which ones to use. Finally, Andrew and Ryan share what they’ve been up to lately. Ryan is making movies and Andrew is dressing for success Norwegian style.   Click here for show notes This podcast is brought to you ad-free by the subscribing members of backpackinglight.com.
