Rob competed on the road for more than 10 years before hitting the gravel, and there he earned major results, including two overall wins at the Tour of the Gila in 2015 and 2018, and victory at Tour of Utah in 2017. He also won the Canadian National Time Trial Championship in 2019. After retiring from the road in 2021, he began focusing on gravel and ultra-endurance riding, where he's continued to podium and set records. He took the top spot and set the course record at the self-supported Badlands 780km gravel race in Spain, and he rode and set the BC Epic 1000 FKT in 2022, beating the previous time by 7 hours. This year, he also tackled the 8-day 2025 Cape Epic stage race in South Africa, with teammate Andrew L'Esperance. He's known for embracing the grit and adventure of multi-day, self-supported gravel expeditions, and has a pure joy for the sport. From Lockdown Laps to FKT's Lydia started running during lockdown whist living in the UK. From very slow 2km runs, Lydia soon progressed to creating her own approach to running and ultra. She did road marathons, but did them different, failed at her first ultra, but then something clicked... • The Speed Project solo in the USA – 500km in 5 days. • Oman Desert Marathon – done. •FKT across 650km of the Camino de Santiago in Portugal – done. Now she lines up at OCC during UTMB week and follows up with her own fundraising project in the UK. 2026? she's coming to Costa Rica to face heat, jungle, mountains, and coastline of The Coastal Challenge
This one was a long time coming. I finally got to sit down with Joey Campanelli — aka Joey Camps — who's been quietly putting together one of the wildest, most hardcore FKT resumes in existence. From a 2014 Appalachian Trail junk show with a ski pack and trench foot, to the 2017 self-supported AT finish that just happened to be three days behind Stringbean's historic run… Joey's stories are brutal, honest, and somehow hilarious.Consider supporting my fundraising efforts for the Trevor Project: https://give.thetrevorproject.org/JeffATWe dig into:Why he sucks at running (his words)Getting into FKTs by way of Ironman, Utah mountains, and ultra-running girlfriendsThe infamous "Limp-a-thon" after tearing his quad on the ATHow to do 50-mile days in pain… for weeksThe mindset behind Nolan's 14 and why he slept in an altitude tent for itNutrition strategies involving watch alarms and resupply math in gas stationsWhat it's like being second-fastest ever on the AT… in the same year someone breaks the recordChapters:00:00 – Intro & Joey's FKT Origin Story03:30 – The AT Junk Show & Learning the Hard Way06:00 – The Limp-a-thon: Injury, Grit, and Nearly Beating Stringbean10:30 – Post-FKT Fallout & Mental Recovery13:00 – Nolan's 14: Obsession, Altitude Tents, and 41 Hours of Glory17:00 – Fueling, Mindset, and Why You Go All InSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside
Tori "Chewy" Constantine is a thru-hiker from the Upper Valley who has extensive backpacking experience including thru-hikes of the Long Trail, Appalachian Trail, and Pacific Crest Trail. Most recently Tori set a new women's unsupported record on the Long Trail, a premier FKT route that is 272 miles long with almost 70,000 feet of vertical spanning the entire state of Vermont. What do you do when you have a film crew that doesn't ride motos and an FKT (fastest known time) route where motos are the only option? Hannah Otto joins Simon to give us a look behind the scenes of her new film documenting her White Rim FKT, and gets into what it takes to not only ride fast in the harsh Utah desert … but also film it. Hannah opens up about obsessing over tiny details, her decision to go against the grain for her bike choice, where to stuff the ridiculous amount of energy gels, the stress of running out of water, and more.RELATED LINKS:BLISTER+ Get Yourself CoveredGET OUR BLISTER NEWSLETTER:Newsletter w/ Weekly Polls & GiveawaysTOPICS & TIMES: Hannah Recaps Her Whole Enchilada FKT (1:04)Why the Kokepelli FKT is a Beast (5:31)Weather in the Desert & the Relentless Wind (6:54)Planning for the White Rim Attempt (17:04)Hardtail or Full-Suspension? On this episode of The Free Outside Podcast, I'm joined by White Mountains legend and community builder Andrew Drummond to dive deep into the Direttissima—an FKT linking all 48 of New Hampshire's 4,000-foot peaks in one unsupported push. Think Nolan's 14 but with more rocks, more bushwhacks, and significantly more emotional damage. We cover Andrew's recent sub-5-day effort, the strategic "feathering" of effort in multi-day sufferfests, and why hiking in the Whites feels like the trail is actively trying to kill you. We also talk about the evolution of FKTs, the importance of local knowledge, and why the Beast Coast terrain is no joke.Andrew reflects on building a community through Ski the Whites and Run the Whites, putting on grassroots events, and embracing failure as a necessary—and often hilarious—step in the process.Whether you're an FKT nerd, an East Coast trail masochist, or just want a glimpse into what makes the White Mountains so special (and spicy), this one's for you.Presented by:
You may assume it's all about speed and pressure. Not this time. Norwegian runner, Abelone Lyng, put her own spin on the legend that is the DNT MASSIV TRAIL: 364 km, and just under 13,000 m vertical gain across four national parks in Norway: Breheimen, Jotunheimen, Skarvheimen, and Hardangervidda. In just 10-days, Abelone moved fast and light, unbroken, solo, yet utterly connected. She didn't chase a formal FKT. She chased what she coined a “Funnest Known Time.”
Today on the Bikes or Death podcast it's all about the ladies! For the first time ever I turned the microphone, and podcast, over to the talented Kayla Hall who guest hosted today's episode! Her guests for today's podcast are Abi Snyder, Jenny Klecak, and Leila Husain, who among other things, participated in this year's Rockstar Challenge. A 270ish mile, singletrack focused, backcountry bikepacking race in Virginia that boasts about 40k feet of elevation. Each of these Rockstar Women put on an impressive performance, all beating the previous Fastest Known Time. Abi took the overall Grand Depart win and set a new FKT. Leila was 3rd overall and 2nd place female. And, Jenny, who had to scratch from the Grand Depart came back just 2 weeks later and set a new FKT, besting Abi's time by 2 hours. Another story from today's episode that caught my ear was when Leila got a stick lodge into her leg on a descent. I'll let Leila tell that story, but trust me, you're gonna wanna hear it (or maybe not
What do wildfires, the Arizona desert, and the Oregon Coast have in common? They've all tried—and failed—to stop Katie Gunvalson, aka Raven. In this episode, I catch up with Jeffrey Award winner and self-supported FKT crusher Katie after her overall record on the Oregon Coast Trail, where she took the long way and still came out fastest. This is the full-circle redemption arc. Katie first came on the podcast after her PCT FKT was stopped by a wildfire on day one. Since then? She's failed a few more times (we all have—ask Nick), kept showing up, and finally broke through with one of the coolest FKTs around—one that involves tide timing, beach running, and some major resilience.Consider donating to support the trevor project as I attempt this record https://give.thetrevorproject.org/JeffATWe talk about what it means to chase something hard, to fail publicly, and to come back swinging. Katie shares the real stuff—motivation, self-worth, wanting to compete with the big names at Cocodona (hey Jamil, you listening?), and why this record mattered more than any other. This episode is brought to you by:Janji – for clothing that keeps you stylishly off the FKT doleGarage Grown Gear – for all your weird, ultralight, cottage gear needsMount to Coast – shoes for people who want to look fastCS Coffee – still the only reason I'm coherent todayAnd a reminder: I'm currently out chasing an Appalachian Trail FKT and raising money for The Trevor Project—because using our niche little sport to support people who feel different can actually make a difference. Ultra runner and long-distance fast packer Jessica Pekari on the podcast! She shares the story of her most recent fastest known time (FKT) adventure: completing the 500 mile Colorado Trail. Jessica is an Army veteran—having served as a medic in Iraq—and mother of three, with Blackfeet and Mexican heritage. She started exploring ultra running in 2015, and ran her first 100 miler the next year. Jessica then went on to win the triple crown of 200 milers in 2018, which consists of the Bigfoot 200 miler in Washington, in August; the Tahoe 200 miler in California and Nevada in September; and it finishes with the Moab 240 miler in October, which Jessica won, on her way to winning the overall title for these three events. Jessica went on to become an accomplished backpacker. She made her first FKT attempt in 2020, going after the southbound Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) record. She was thwarted by fires that year and didn't set the FKT, but she did write a book about her experiences: Bombs to Trails: Interweaving Heritage, Life, and PTSD on the Pacific Crest Trail. Jessica returned to the PCT in 2023 and set that FKT. In this episode, Jessica tells the story of setting her latest FKT: the 500-mile Colorado Trail northbound, collegiate west, unsupported record. Her story covers the ups and downs, highs and lows of such an incredible adventure. Be ready to get inspired! I can't quite believe it, but here we are — the 800th episode of the Tough Girl Podcast! In this special solo episode, I'm taking you behind the scenes for a personal catch-up and reflection on everything that's happened so far in 2025 — from January through to August. I talk about what life has looked like lately (yes, still living at home with my parents!), working part-time at AIM Health, the adventures I've been on, the challenges I've faced, and the exciting things coming up next. This episode is a bit of everything: gear chat (flat-lay photos and a new Atom Pack!), health updates (peri-menopause, gut health, strength training, and more), financial planning (Patreon, pensions, broken laptops!), plus reflections on my time walking the English Camino, Snowdonia Slate Trail, and tackling the GR20 in Corsica — which was honestly tougher than the Marathon des Sables. I'm also talking about my motivations for taking on the GR10, what I've learned in 10 years of podcasting, and why the mission — to increase the amount of female role models in the media especially in relation to adventure and physical challenges— is stronger than ever. Thank you for being here with me on this journey. Whether you've listened from the start or are just finding the show now, I'm so incredibly grateful. This is a celebration of us — of consistency, resilience, growth, and dreaming big.
What the Heck Is an FKT? (And Why I'm Living in the Woods for 45 Days)Live from a very cabin-y cabin in Montana, I bring you an episode for everyone wondering, what even is an Appalachian Trail FKT? I'm joined by the queen of Fastest Known Times herself, Allison Mercer, to break it all down. We cover the wild world of FKTs—from how they started, to the different styles (unsupported, self-supported, supported), what's allowed, what's not, and how you can go set your own.Whether you're a longtime endurance nerd or just discovering FKTs, this episode sets the stage for my own upcoming Appalachian Trail FKT attempt. In 2016, Adam ran 2,500 miles over the course of 60 days to cross the USA on foot. Subsequently, in November of 2016, he successfully completed a 60-day journey alone in the wilderness of South America to become winner of Discovery Channel's survivalist show, The Wheel. Following that adventure, Adam set two prominent Fastest Known Times (FKTs): in 2017 he became part of the first duo to ever run self-supported on foot across Great Britain (Scotland, England and Wales) while summiting the highest peak in each country along the way; and in 2020, he set the supported FKT on the Tahoe Rim Trail—a 171-mile circumnavigation of Lake Tahoe. Most recently in 2025, Adam finished 4th overall and ran one of the Top-10 fastest times ever at the historic Badwater 135. Adam's life mission is to push himself past his perceived limits and achieve the impossible. His calling is to share what he has learned and help others grow in their journey so as to push through the ceiling and achieve their own 'impossible'.Please note that this podcast is created strictly for educational purposes and should never be used for medical diagnosis or treatment.Connect w/ Adam: IG: www.instagram.com/adamkimble818/Web: adamkimble.com/Mentioned:Listen to NR Episode #81 with Adam Kimble: nutritional-revolution.com/podcasts/ultrarunner-and-coach-adam-kimble/hDrop Sweat Testing: https://hdroptech.com/ref/83/Maurten Gels on The Feed: https://thefeed.com/teams/nutritional-revolutionPrecision Hydration Electrolyte Capsules: https://amzn.to/3H1AitGNeverSecond Drink Mix: https://amzn.to/4kZWthGLiquid IV: https://amzn.to/3U3kedHIce Bandana: https://amzn.to/4moCZ7HArm Sleeves: https://amzn.to/40DVDA2Run Gum: https://amzn.to/4flD4XqMORE NR New customers save 10% off all products on our website with the code NEWPOD10 If you would like to work with our practitioners, click here: https://nutritional-revolution.com/work-with-us/ Save 20% on all supplements at our trusted online source: https://us.fullscript.com/welcome/kchannell Join Nutritional Revolution's The Feed Club to get $20 off right away with an additional $20 Feed credit drop every 90 days.: https://thefeed.com/teams/nutritional-revolution If you're interested in sponsoring Nutritional Revolution Podcast, shoot us an email at nutritionalrev@gmail.com.
For this Appalachian Trail FKT, I realized I have to become one with the thru-hiker. That means mud baths, tarp life, eating with my hands, and yes—training while also working a remote job from the literal woods. This episode is a stitched-together recap of my second big training camp, where I logged over 300 miles and 80,000 feet of vert in the hardest terrain the AT has to offer.I kick things off with a midnight arrival in Bangor and a 2.7-mile walk to my hotel (because, of course, there were no Ubers). From there, it's all rain, roots, bugs, busted toes, and resupply strategy. I test out nearly every piece of gear I plan to use on the FKT—including my hilariously short sleeping bag and a tarp that may or may not survive the Whites. I hike through mud pits, scale ladders, eat questionable trail food, and rediscover the terrifying beauty of the Kennebec River—the same one I swam across back in 2016 like an idiot.Along the way, I also get an infected toe, limp into urgent care covered in dirt, try not to scare Ivy League joggers with my homeless-looking setup, and wrestle with one of my biggest fears: talking to people in small-town resupply stores. This camp wasn't about big miles (although I still hit plenty). It was about dialing in the uncomfortable stuff—nutrition, logistics, clothing, sleep strategy, and reminding myself just how hard this trail really is. I'm equal parts confident and scared for August, which probably means I'm right where I need to be.Thanks for listening, supporting, and laughing along with the chaos. I'm alive in Bangor, Maine — a sentence that somehow feels like the opening line of a novel. In this episode of the Free Outside Show, I walk you through my chaotic arrival to the start of my Appalachian Trail FKT training camp, including a 1 a.m. walk from the airport (no Ubers in Bangor, apparently) and my deep dive into specificity. I'm testing everything: my exact 7,000-calorie-per-day nutrition, gear kit, FKT pacing strategy, and resupply logistics — all in the hardest section of the trail.I also talk about working on the road, training smart, respecting the difficulty of the White Mountains, and building the blueprint for a successful AT attempt. Plus: some sponsor shoutouts to Garage Grown Gear, CS Instant Coffee, and Janji (yes, I am currently dressed head-to-toe in Janji gear — including the pockets I'll be eating out of for the next 40+ days).Want to support the mission? This year's Tour Divide was one for the books - and the record books. With good weather and a very competitive field we saw dots moving so faster than anything we'd seen before, putting all the previous FKT's in potential jeopardy. Among those dots was Andrew Onermaa who was taking on the Tour Divide for the first time, and on a singlespeed! For much of the race Andrew's dot was ahead of the 2016 FKT set by Chris Plesko. It looked as though we were witnessing history as Andrew dug deep to stay ahead of the record. Towards the very end of the race reality would sink in as Andrew was forced to take the new CDT section (added since 2016) while Chris's dot took the highway to Antelope Wells. In the end Andrew would finish with a time of 15d 11h 15m, less than 3 hours behind Pleskos' FKT of 15d 8h 4m. Any way you look at it, this was a historic and impress run by Andrew, but we did take this opportunity to have a discussion about the differences in the routes and about FKT's in general on today's episode. A record would have been nice, but nothing can detract from Andrew's performance on his first Tour Divide attempt. He said on the podcast that the Tour Divide should feel like something you "have to do". Andrew rode like a man possessed by a feeling of need, not want. During his race he did not open Instagram or social media one time. He only took 4 selfies to send to his girlfriend Taylor, no other photos the entire race! He was locked in. But he did check Trackleader's often, especially Chris Plesko's dot. To say he was focused would be a significant understatement and the results speak for themselves. It was an easy decision for me to rent a car and drive 14 hours so I could have this conversation with Andrew in person and I'm glad I did. You can watch or listen to my chat with Andrew with the links below. Instead of Sponsors this week, we'd like to highlight ways you can help with the Texas Hill Country flood recovery and rebuilding efforts. TxORA Hill Country Relief Fund - The Texas Outdoor Recreation Alliance is accepting contributions that will bring critical, near-term relief and support restoration for the Central Texas Floods. The small businesses, venues, parks, and fixtures of our recreation community along impacted areas of the Guadelupe River will be the recipients of these funds to align with our status as the Texas outdoor business alliance. Kerr County Flood Relief Fund - Grants from the Fund will support nonprofit organizations, first responder agencies, and local governments actively involved in response, relief, and recovery efforts. While we are unable to award grants directly to individuals or families - or to fund repairs to private property or replace personal belongings - we are committed to channeling resources to the trusted organizations working tirelessly to help our neighbors in need. Together, we can make a meaningful difference during this challenging time. Central Texas Showdown - The CTS route/s go directly through the areas of Texas that were most impacted by these floods. Many of the families and businesses along the route are hurting right now. We will be doing everything we can to support the communities along the route through our event. For starters a percentage of all registration will go to the TxORA relief fund. We will also be highlighting businesses along the route that could use your support. We always have an opportunity to leave a positive impact in the communities we ride through. This year that opportunity is even greater, please consider joining us as a way to lift of and support these communities.

Western States may be the most iconic race in ultrarunning—but it also comes with carnage, heartbreak, and a pile of DNS and DNF drama. In this episode, I'm joined by the always-entertaining Allison Mercer (of FastestKnownTime.com) to break down the storylines, the runners who didn't make it to the start line, and wild ideas to spice up the sport (spoiler: mile-seeding starts for elites?).We also dive into the FKT world—John Kelly's latest madness, what's changing in the scene, and why FKTs still matter. Plus, I give a quick life update because I'm moving out, living out of a storage unit, and heading out for an Appalachian Trail FKT attempt.Big thanks to our sponsors:

Tyler Andrews is a good friend with whom I've done trips with to Peru, Ecuador, and most recently, the Atacama Desert of Chile where we climbed up to almost 20,000 feet. Ty was a self-described high school nerd musician who went on to be an average D3 cross country runner. After battling depression, Ty dedicated himself to becoming a pro mountain runner, which has seen him set numerous FKTs on some of the most iconic tall peaks in the world, including Aconcagua, Kilimanjaro, and Cotopaxi. One recent FKT in the Himalayas has been commemorated in the very cool short film “9 Hours on Manaslu” that you can watch on YouTube and is definitely worth 27 minutes of your time. To show his breadth, Ty also holds the record for the Leadville Marathon and has run in the U.S. Olympic marathon trials. He is a La Sportiva-sponsored athlete and is founder of the Chaski Endurance Collective, which coaches ultramarathoners. Which all leads us to this riveting WASP appearance, on which we chat about his recent attempts to set the FKT for running up Mt. Everest, both with and without supplemental oxygen. How incredible does that sound? I won't ruin the story for you, but Ty will talk about the what, when, how, and why for this audacious project and all of the logistics and challenges involved. For some really great content that gets very granular about how Ty did this, I highly recommend you go listen to his 21-part podcast series called Ty's Training: Talking with my Dad. It's fascinating hearing some of the innovative methods Ty used to train for this quest that pushed him harder than he's ever been challenged before. We can't seem to get enough of John Kelly's FKT attempt on the Appalachian Trail, and we shared a few final thoughts about it before he finishes in the next couple of weeks. We also discussed Faith Kipyegon's upcoming attempt to break 4:00 for the mile, and we offered our predictions for the Western States Endurance Run this weekend. Of course, with the Peachtree Road Race coming up in Atlanta, we talked a bit about that, too.
In this episode of Without Compromise, we sit down with elite mountain runner and endurance athlete Tyler Andrews to unpack his bold attempt to set a speed record on Mount Everest. From hallucinations at 8,400 meters to boot failures and brutal weather windows, Tyler brings us deep into the mental and physical demands of chasing FKTs at the highest altitudes on Earth. He reflects on what went right, what went wrong, and why he's still hungry for more. We also explore the mindset that drives him to live without compromise—whether he's racing up volcanoes, running hundreds of miles, or planning his next summit push.Find out more about Athletic Brewing at athleticbrewing.comWatch Athletic Brewing's FKT documentary, Journey to 100, here.

Send us a textFrom podium finishes to mountain FKT ambitions, Jane Maus has been quietly building an impressive resume in trail running. Just weeks before the highly anticipated Broken Arrow Skyrace 46K, she joins the Steep Stuff Podcast to share her practical approach to one of North America's most competitive mountain races.Having placed 7th at Broken Arrow in 2022, Moss brings valuable course experience to this year's event. She candidly discusses her race strategy—holding back on the first loop to avoid the late-race blowup she experienced previously. "Last time I raced this, I felt amazing the first lap and was third or fourth place the entire lap," she recalls. "And then I had a bit of an explosion the last four miles and got passed by like three or four women."What makes this conversation particularly refreshing is Maus' honest self-assessment. Despite strong performances this season, including a second-place finish at Lake Sonoma 50 Miler and victory at GoPro Mountain Games, she acknowledges the specialized nature of Broken Arrow's terrain and the depth of the women's field. While making Team USA would be "absolutely a dream come true," she's focused on executing her best possible race rather than fixating on specific placement goals. The discussion extends beyond Broken Arrow to explore her ambitious plans for 2023, including potential FKT attempts on Grand Teton and Whirl Peak, several Cirque Series races, and possibly the Leadville 100. Her excitement about blending traditional trail racing with technical mountain objectives showcases the versatility that defines today's elite mountain athletes.Whether you're preparing for your own mountain race or simply fascinated by the strategic thinking behind elite performances, this conversation offers valuable insights into the mindset required to succeed in competitive mountain racing. Give it a listen, then follow along as Jane takes on one of the year's most exciting trail events.Follow James on IG - @jameslaurielloFollow the Steep Stuff Podcast on IG - @steepstuff_podUse code steepstuffpod for 25% off your cart at UltimateDirection.com!

In this solo episode of the Free Outside Podcast, I share my full game plan for 2025—including how I'm building from Cocodona 250 to the Appalachian Trail self-supported FKT attempt this August. I break down how I'm training, recovering, testing gear, and optimizing logistics for what could be a once-in-a-lifetime record shot.We cover:-How Cocodona fits into my 2025 plan-Why I'm racing Bighorn 100 as an FKT-style training run-Nutrition experiments and how I'm training my gut for endurance-Gear strategy: headlamps, socks, resupply boxes, portable charging-My flexible (but spreadsheet-heavy) approach to planning FKTs-The impact of trail damage from hurricanes and federal cuts to trail crews-And why I think “just eat more” is still the most revolutionary ultra strategy out there-This is a behind-the-scenes look at what it actually takes to prep for a 2,000+ mile FKT. Plus, I shout out a few sponsors that help make it all possible and give a sneak peek of a secret June project.
This is the recording of the interview from Wednesday, May 21st with ultrarunner Ryan Thorpe, who recently set the Fastest Known Time (FKT) on the Catskills section of the New York Long Path. Ryan completed the full "blue line to blue line" traverse: from the northernmost to the southernmost boundaries of Catskill Park in an incredible time of 32 hours, 24 minutes, and 53 seconds. This marks the first continuous effort on this route, and Ryan was fully supported by a dedicated crew and team of pacers throughout the run!Check out the FKT write-up here: https://fastestknowntime.com/fkt/ryan-thorpe-long-path-ny-2025-04-19

Send us a textWhen it comes to training for mountain running, conventional wisdom often points to endless miles on technical trails and massive vert accumulation. Mason Copey is challenging that paradigm—and the results speak for themselves.Fresh off his victory at the La Sportiva Mount Sanitas Challenge, where he crushed the FKT and defeated elite competitors like Dan Kurtz, Mason joins the Steep Stuff Podcast to reveal the innovative training approach that's positioning him as a top contender for Team USA's mountain running squad. His secret? Less running, more biking, and highly targeted quality sessions."Biking is the next frontier," Mason explains, detailing how he achieves the aerobic stimulus of 100-mile running weeks while keeping his body fresh for key workouts. Rather than grinding away on technical trails daily, he concentrates his mountain-specific training into focused sessions, building his foundation through track workouts that maximize running economy and speed. This approach has yielded remarkable results—from a significant marathon PR at CIM to blazing fast mountain performances that demonstrate both climbing power and downhill prowess. What makes Mason's perspective particularly valuable is his dual role as both elite athlete and coach. He meticulously analyzes training stimulus, distinguishing between metabolic and mechanical adaptations while crafting sessions that deliver maximum benefit with minimal breakdown. His explanation of how neuromuscular skills (like technical trail running) require frequency rather than volume offers a refreshing counterpoint to the "more is better" mentality.Beyond the physical aspects, Mason offers thoughtful insights on mental preparation, emphasizing self-acceptance and vulnerability as foundations for athletic success. As he prepares for the Sunupi Mountain Classic—a World Championship qualifier with a technical course that will test every aspect of mountain running ability—his confidence is evident but tempered with respect for the competitive field.Whether you're targeting a mountain race, seeking performance breakthroughs, or simply looking to train more sustainably, Mason's innovative methodology offers valuable lessons for endurance athletes at every level. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Jonathan Thomas, known on trail as Janis Joplin. Janis Joplin is a thru-hiker, FKT record holder, D1 collegiate track and field athlete, former news cameraman, Boston Marathon bombing survivor, CDT trail angel, and owner of Exotic Pax, an innovative, vest-style backpack for thru-hikers handmade in Chama, New Mexico. This episode covers a lot of ground, including the many times he's narrowly escaped death, what is was like growing up in New Orleans, being a D1 collegiate athlete, what brought him into the world of FKTs and how FKT athletes are more possessive over their records than they might lead on, what it's like to run an outfitter in a sleepy CDT town, and the inspiration and process that goes into his unique backpacks. We wrap the show with a reversal on the closure of a campground key to JMT and PCT hikers, our takes on who'd win in a fight between 100 men and one silverback gorilla, and the Triple Crown of items you geniously stash in many strategic locations. Erica Lubera is back on The Running Mullet, and she brought something wild with her—a brand new unsupported FKT on Pennsylvania's Mid State Trail! That's 346 miles of rocks, solitude, and whatever snacks she could carry from the start. We get into the highs, the lows, maybe hallucinations, the river crossings, and why on earth someone would choose to do this alone (spoiler: she's a badass). It's raw, honest, and pretty freaking inspiring. Tune in!

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by author, backpacker, and our resident alien expert, Mike Clelland. We made an honest attempt to discuss ultralight backpacking during this one, and although we do touch on the subject some, the bulk of this conversation is dedicated to owls, aliens, and all things paranormal activity. Mike has become the preeminent expert of the interplay between owls and UFO citings, which may not sound like a thing, however Mike has accrued a lifetime of stories from folks who have experiences that say that it is. If owls and aliens don't sound like your jam, we encourage you to give this one a shot, as Mike's long standing intense passion for these subjects turns out to be awfully contagious; Chaunce and I are thoroughly entertained. We also discuss the pros and cons of traditional vs. self-publishing, which Mike has done both, but really this is mostly aliens and owls. Warning: This episode includes discussions of rape, death, and child loss in the context of aliens. If any of these topics are triggering, we encourage you to skip this interview. We wrap the show with the news that the Backpacker Radio crew is headed to AT Trail Days, news of a woman who set the overall FKT on the Florida Trail, Knorr Side recipe recommendations, the shortest roast in the history of roasts, what animal we'd train to be our hiking companion, the triple crown of memes, dog's cornchip paws, and more. Chase Wark and I set out on a pretty wild adventure on Sunday March 26, separately but for the same purpose. Purposes, rather. We were both seeking an FKT on the Mega Midsouth and in a much bigger picture, we were seeking to raise funds for the United Way of Payne County. This podcast is in conjunction with The Stable Cyclist and covers a lot from a very busy weekend in Oklahoma. Please enjoy. I am continuing my fundraising through the end of March by sending money to my @iamtedking Venmo. In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Austen McDaniel, known on trail as PI. If that name sounds familiar, it's because we've been reading it off at the end of every episode for years, as Austen is one of our Chuck Norris Award-winning Patreon supporters. But in addition to being a longtime patron, Austen is also one hell of a backpacker, having completed the Triple Crown in three consecutive years. He approached his first thru-hike as prepared as anyone we've ever talked to, hitting the Appalachian Trail with a six-pound base weight after years of fine-tuning his setup on various shakedown hikes. He walks us through how he's managed to shave additional ounces and grams off his pack, shares some fun ultralight hacks, and offers tips for making cold soaking suck less. Of course, we also dive deep into his three thru-hikes. Beyond hiking, Austen gives us a glimpse into his life as a professional tennis instructor, if he's seducing moms at the country club, and how he managed to squeeze in some disc golf in various trail towns during his CDT trek. We wrap the show with news of an massive new FKT on New Zealand's Te Araroa, a breakdown of just how much Irish heritage runs through our DNA, including some truly deranged family tree math from Chaunce, the triple crown of food combinations, and possibly the greatest limerick in the history of the written language.
