Scott Bowden set out two weeks ago to tackle a 580km route across Tasmania. His goal was to beat Payson's FKT from 2021, but most importantly, he just wanted to finish. With 11,000 meters of elevation, multiple river crossings, all types of weather, and punishing terrain, the route is brutal to say the least, and when Scott found himself struggling to keep his body temperature, he thought about pulling the plug. In the end, he did finish, and he joins Payson to swap war stories. Before discussing the ride, however, they talk about how Scott got there in the first place. He began his cycling career in XC, and even competed in the Olympics in 2016. After transitioning to pro road racing in Europe, however, his career was cut short by several factors caused by the pandemic. After moving back home to Tassie, he started a new chapter, both on the bike and off. This episode is brought to you by MAAP, TrainingPeaks, and Osprey. Watch Payson's new film Crossings: New Zealand here.Watch Crossing Tasmania here. Instagram: @withpacepodcastYouTube: Payson McElveen Email: howdy@withpace.cc

This is a Thanksgiving special episode of the Free Outside Podcast, a mix of long-run thoughts, unpopular opinions, and one of the most meaningful adventures of my life, the Great Western Loop.I talk about why I think we are historically illiterate, why it is okay to chase goals even if they feel pointless to other people, whether turkey trots have gotten too serious, and my very important theory on whether drones killed the blimp. I also get into why self-supported FKTs matter so much to me and why I think they deserve more respect than they get. Then I rewind eight years to finishing the Great Western Loop on Thanksgiving. I break down what the Loop actually is, how I planned the massive cross-country connector from the Grand Canyon back to the PCT, why self-supported style creates better adventure, and some of the wildest moments from the entire 7,000-mile journey. From cowbell mornings on the Pacific Northwest Trail, to getting all the bikers in Yaak, Montana in trouble for cooking 20 pounds of bacon, to freezing on the CDT, navigating by map and compass on the Grand Enchantment Trail, sleeping in the bottom of the Grand Canyon, and finishing on Thanksgiving near Parker, Arizona. This adventure changed the entire direction of my life and planted the seed for every FKT that followed. This episode is brought to you by Janji at janji.com. On this episode of the HappyCast, we go in-depth with local Houstonian Katy Barber who just tackled the Padre Island National Seashore (PINS) FKT. Located in Texas, and definitely NOT Galveston, this is the 4th longest beach in the WORLD and one of the most isolated places in the country, all tucked away on the largest unprotected barrier island in the world. This is a 65+ mile FKT that traverses the entire length of the beach, and no woman has ever attempted this feat before, and only two men have completed it. We do a deep dive with Katy and her coach and fellow guest, Chad Lasater (who will one day have his own episode as he is a treasure trove of accomplishments). We talk about the logistics, the difficulty of running on a beach, and the dynamics with crewing and dealing with the remote nature of the race. Further yet, this was double the distance Katy has previously ran, so we talk about establishing distance PR's in the process. We also share a few crew stories, as both Chad and Andrew were present for the FKT. Katy's crew also consisted of Kevin Christensen, Regina Massingill, Jaimie (kind of like Cher or Bono), Laura Lundell, and John Kilburn. Join us as we tackle one of the more primitive, remote, and unconventional recaps yet - 65+ miles on nothing but sand! And congratulations on setting the FKT, Katy! It was one hell of a (sandy) adventure. Be sure to subscribe to the podcast wherever you listen, and we always appreciate you leaving a good rate and review. Send us a textA fall storm, ankle‑deep snow, and a west wind tearing across the Sawatch set the stage—then David Hedges took the Nolans 14 record back by roughly ten minutes. We unpack how it happened, from the early confidence on Antero to a near-collapse between Harvard and Oxford, a frozen night saved by borrowed layers and hot gels, and a final, ruthless push off Massive that flipped the math with miles to spare. The story isn't just splits; it's style, stewardship, and what local fluency really looks like when the terrain turns feral. We dig into route decisions like choosing the Columbia–Harvard traverse when conditions allow, why Princeton is the true make‑or‑break, and how Pine Creek's flooded willows taxed time and patience. David contrasts a lean, self‑navigated approach with a big‑budget model, raising thoughtful questions about GPX dependency, pacers, and what FKTs are rewarding now. He also walks through working directly with the Leadville district ranger during the La Plata closure—a quiet example of respecting the place you move through fast.Looking ahead, David shares a sharp slate of objectives that fit his engine: the Tonto Trail, the La Sal Traverse, and SCAR in the Smokies. Then comes the bold target—Aconcagua's standard route FKT—where altitude physiology, long uphill intervals, and precise downhill pacing become the whole game. If you love FKTs, mountain strategy, and honest talk about what it takes to move fast when conditions say no, this one's a feast. If this conversation resonated, follow David on Instagram at D_hedges_, share the episode with a friend who geeks out on routes and style, and leave a quick review so more mountain nerds can find the show. Fresh off my self-supported AT record, I sit down with 2013 AT self-supported FKT holder Matt Kirk to talk about the weird gravity of post-trail depression, the long arc of the record from Ward Leonard to Stringbean to Tara, and where the line is with tech, tracking, and “help” on a self-supported effort. We dig into calories gone wrong (why 3,500/day failed), Shenandoah as a quiet crux, trail magic ethics, and why simplicity might be the best rule we have left. Matt shares the origin story of SCAR, naming it, and—plot twist—how he met his wife on the AT. I share some nuts and bolts from my run (18 mail drops, ~12 power banks, and way too much battery anxiety), and we both argue for screen-free campfire vibes and keeping the culture alive while the times keep dropping. If you're into FKTs, thru-hiking history, or just need a blueprint for surviving the “now what?” after a big goal, this one's for you.Check out Matt Kirk online:His Blog: https://matthewkirk.blogspot.com/His Youtube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCXrGFci8u_goKfnP8PqkaLADonate to the Trevor Project: https://give.thetrevorproject.org/fundraiser/6530749Chapters00:00 Post-Hike Transition and Emotional Challenges02:40 Caloric Miscalculations and Preparation for FKT05:31 Evolution of FKT Records and Technological Advances08:21 The Impact of Previous Record Holders10:48 Guidelines for Self-Supported Hiking13:28 Documenting the Journey: Technology and Tracking16:21 The Balance of Simplicity and Validation in Records19:02 Reflections on the Future of FKT Attempts27:13 Navigating Resupply Challenges32:58 Mental Strategies for Endurance37:13 The Importance of Reflection41:06 Journey into Ultrarunning and FKTs51:09 The Cost of Technology in Hiking54:15 Navigating Technology and Safety on the Trail56:42 The Impact of Technology on Hiking Culture01:00:18 The Balance of Trail Magic and Self-Sufficiency01:05:01 Personal Stories: Meeting on the TrailSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

Ten days off the Appalachian Trail and I'm deep in the post-trail fog—so I'm doing what any reasonable human would: grading my own record attempt. In this episode I hand out a full report card on the AT self-supported FKT—physical execution, sleep, injuries, nutrition (hello 1,000-cal drink mix), logistics (RIP Shenandoah resupply), mental game, weather, terrain, and storytelling—then tally the GPA. I riff on why drone shots aren't a story, share some Mammoth 200 takes, and explain how two left shoes, a missing electronics bag, and shoe-toe peekaboo somehow still add up to a record. We hit night hiking tactics, the “toughness groove,” and field a few listener questions. Eight days after setting the Appalachian Trail self-supported FKT, I sit down with my girlfriend, Allison Powell, for the most comprehensive post-mortem yet. We unpack the messy middle: inReach texts that read like hieroglyphics, a resupply box that vanished in Shenandoah, two left shoes (and a toe popping through the right one), a broken pole in New York, rain that no radar would admit, and the late-race sit-and-kick that finally stuck. We talk about the A-T(eam) group thread with John (yes, the Mexico engagement guy), what it's like supporting a record you're not allowed to “help” on, the pre-race spreadsheet rabbit hole, asking strangers for walnuts, hallucinating Slenderman, and touching the Springer sign before pizza and sleep. This week, Allison interviewed her friend and brand new *unsupported* FKT-holder for the Appalachian Trail, Jeff Garmire! Jeff's accomplishment was amazing; not only did he do the entire trail in 45 days, 8 hours, and 37 minutes, but he did it without any help at all. This meant that he had to solve any problems that cropped up along the way, whether it was missing a food shipment, or having the wrong shoes, or leaving a bunch of chargers on the side of the trail. Allison and Jeff talked about all of it only a couple of days after Jeff finished, and he had a lot to share about the challenges he faced and how he's feeling now.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek brought to you by Topo Athletic, we are joined by Wesley Tils, known on trail as Megaman. Buckle in because oh boy does Megaman have an origin story. After growing up in the Mormon church, leaving the church to become a pro boxer, quitting boxing to give the church another shot and going on a missionary trip as his trial of faith, and ultimately leaving the church for good during this missionary trip, escaping onto the PCT with several church members essentially chasing him in pursuit, Megaman's path to thru-hiking was not exactly conventional. Since hitting the trails, Megaman hasn't stopped hiking, accumulating more than 15,000 miles across 18 long trails in 9 years. We learn about all his adventures, including hikes of the Maah Daah Hey Trail, River to River Trail, his self-made Mexico to Canada Trail called “the fourth crown route, and a goosebump inducing story about an aggressive encounter with a grizzly bear on the CDT. Alyssa Godesky is most well-known these days for being a professional triathlete and the co-host of the popular Ironwomen podcast. What isn't well known is that she was an ultra marathon runner and trail runner, long before she moved into the world of triathlons. In 2018, Alyssa returned to her trail running roots and set out on a mission to break the Fastest Known Time (or FKT) on the Vermont Long Trail in the United States, a 273mi / 440km trail which traverses the State of Vermont from north to south. Now if you saw the film ‘Finding Traction' on Netflix last year, you know more about the Vermont Long Trail than you might think...That film follows legendary trail runner, Nikki Kimball, on her attempt to break the (men's) record on the Vermont Long Trail.#spoileralert Nikki misses the men's record but smashes the women's record. It turns out that watching ‘Finding Traction' lit the spark in Alyssa to wonder if she could do it.Fast forward a few years and in 2018 (#spoileralert), Alyssa set a new women's record of 5 days, 2 hours & 37min, taking over 5 hours off Nikki's record! In this conversation we discuss:- the self-doubt and fear of failure that nearly stopped the project before she'd even started,- the strategies she used to avoid slipping into comparison with Nikki (who is, on paper, by far the more talented and experienced runner),- the sleep deprivation she experienced (after having only 17 hours of sleep in 5 days), and- the (surprising) impact the run (and the stress from it) had on her body, hormonally.

In this soul-spilling solo episode, I get honest from a borrowed cabin (and even more borrowed fishing hat) about why I gave up my home, comforts, and stability to chase a 40+ day goal on the Appalachian Trail. This isn't just about trying to set an FKT—this is about redefining why we go after anything in life. I break down what it means to pursue something uncertain, unplug from the chaos, and find the rawest form of purpose in a world drowning in notifications, optics, and comparison traps. From unexpected homelessness to deep reflections on fear, failure, self-worth, and the primal joy of moving through wild places, this episode is a deep dive into what motivates me—and maybe what can motivate you too. No pretense. No performance. Just truth, vulnerability, and a reminder that trying is enough.Plus: gear talk, sponsor love, and why I might be cramping somewhere on the AT as you listen.Brought to you by:Janji. In this episode of the Free Outside Podcast, I replay one of my all-time favorite convos — a sit-down with Tara Dower, who absolutely crushed the supported Appalachian Trail FKT and somehow lived to tell the tale (barely).Consider supporting The Trevor Project https://give.thetrevorproject.org/JeffATWe talk about everything from post-trail depression to how it feels when your crew spoon-feeds you every meal for 40 days straight. Tara breaks down the power of delegation, what it's like to lose all decision-making autonomy, and how a dog bite during a panic attack marked the low point of her hiking career (and also maybe the turning point). She also shares how pacing Kyle Curtin on the Colorado Trail helped her build her own FKT strategy, why her crew was the real MVP, and how she managed to crush Hardrock 100 just weeks before starting her AT attempt. This isn't just a recap of a record — it's an honest look at fear, failure, mental health, and the grind it takes to do something massive. Plus, Tara drops her next FKT plans and talks about the weird joy of vlogging in a blizzard. If you're curious about how to plan for an FKT this big — or just want to hear two sleep-deprived trail nerds bond over anxiety and peanut butter — you'll love this one.Sponsored by:Janji – Use code FREEOUTSIDE for a discountGarage Grown Gear – Ultralight dreamlandCS Coffee – My trail coffee of choiceMount to coast – Big things brewingUltraspire - A cool pack is on the way Chapters00:00 Introduction to Tara Dower's Achievements07:52 The Journey to the Appalachian Trail FKT13:47 Lessons from Failure: The 2017 Attempt20:03 The Importance of Crew Dynamics26:12 Planning for the FKT: The Trail Bible32:32 Looking Ahead: Future Plans and Goals41:44 The Evolution of FKT Training49:55 The Role of Social Media in Outdoor Experiences58:26 Mindset for Tackling Big Challenges01:03:46 Interview with Tara Dower: FKT on the Appalachian TrailSubscribe to Substack: http://freeoutside.substack.comSupport this content on patreon: HTTP://patreon.com/freeoutsideBuy my book "Free Outside" on Amazon: https://amzn.to/39LpoSFEmail me to buy a signed copy of my book, "Free Outside" at jeff@freeoutside.comWatch the movie about setting the record on the Colorado Trail: https://tubitv.com/movies/100019916/free-outsideWebsite: www.Freeoutside.comInstagram: thefreeoutsidefacebook: www.facebook.com/freeoutside

Today on the Bikes or Death podcast it's all about the ladies!  For the first time ever I turned the microphone, and podcast, over to the talented Kayla Hall who guest hosted today's episode!   Her guests for today's podcast are Abi Snyder, Jenny Klecak, and Leila Husain, who among other things, participated in this year's Rockstar Challenge.  A 270ish mile, singletrack focused, backcountry bikepacking race in Virginia that boasts about 40k feet of elevation.     Each of these Rockstar Women put on an impressive performance, all beating the previous Fastest Known Time.  Abi took the overall Grand Depart win and set a new FKT.  Leila was 3rd overall and 2nd place female.  And, Jenny, who had to scratch from the Grand Depart came back just 2 weeks later and set a new FKT, besting Abi's time by 2 hours.   Another story from today's episode that caught my ear was when Leila got a stick lodge into her leg on a descent.  I'll let Leila tell that story, but trust me, you're gonna wanna hear it (or maybe not
