A stray dog follows Charles and his wife back to their tent in a climbing canyon in Mexico, and three nights later they make a promise that changes everything: they are not going home without him. What comes next is part rescue story, part entrepreneurship story, and part hard-earned lesson in what dogs actually need. Charles, the owner of Mountain Dog Products, joins me to share how a handmade leash built from climbing rope and a carabiner turned into a full business built on upcycled materials and domestic manufacturing in Phoenix. We get into the behind-the-scenes of building a product brand the unglamorous operations, customization for trainers, and why collaboration and good leadership matter more than hype. Then we shift into dog ownership, where Charles opens up about Jefe, the reactive rescue dog he loved deeply but didn't know how to handle. We talk boundaries, exercise, crate training, and why “structure equals freedom” is not a slogan, it is the reason some dogs get to live bigger, safer lives. We also tackle the big topics people avoid: breed traits, genetics, ethical breeders, backyard breeding, and how rescue placement can go wrong when temperament is ignored. If you have ever felt overwhelmed by a high-drive dog, confused by conflicting dog training content online, or unsure how to pick the right dog for your lifestyle, this conversation will help you think clearly and choose intentionally. If you enjoyed it, subscribe, share it with a dog person who needs to hear it, and leave a review so more owners can find the show.Visit us on the website here to see what we've got going on and how you can join our pack of good dogs and owners.

Rock climbing is a great sport for thrill-seekers. In Gabriel Tallent's Crux, main characters Dan and Tamma fit the bill perfectly. At just 17 years old, they bond over the side of a mountain where one miscalculated inch of movement could mean life or death. However, risk doesn't disappear once they make it safely to flat ground. For Dan and Tamma, risk exists in growing up, and growing out of their physical and emotional comfort zones. In today's episode, Tallent joins NPR's Juana Summers to discuss his newest novel and how rock climbing can widen more than one type of human perspective. To listen to Book of the Day sponsor-free and support NPR's book coverage, sign up for Book of the Day+ at plus.npr.org/bookofthedayLearn more about sponsor message choices: podcastchoices.com/adchoicesNPR Privacy Policy

After a harrowing rock climbing accident, Whitney not only confronted her mortality but also rediscovered the profound importance of family and the lessons that come from our mistakes. Main Content: Section 1: The Family Lab - A New Approach to Parenting Whitney Archibald, a seasoned mother of five, has transformed her experiences into a valuable resource for families. With children ranging from 10 to 20 years old, she understands the evolving dynamics of family life. After her youngest began preschool, Whitney reignited her passion for writing, leading to her blog, "How She Moms," which eventually evolved into the podcast, "The Family Lab." She explains, "Family life is all an experiment, and we are just throwing things at the wall, trying to see what sticks." This refreshing perspective encourages parents to embrace the chaos and recognize that there's no one-size-fits-all solution to parenting. Section 2: The Unthinkable Accident On a seemingly ordinary day in July 2023, Whitney embarked on a rock climbing excursion with her children and nieces. Despite her cautious nature, a moment of oversight led to a life-altering fall. "I pride myself on being a safe climber," she recalls, but a simple mistake—failing to double-check her gear—resulted in a catastrophic 30-foot drop. As she lay on the ground, grappling with immense pain, her mind raced through a mix of emotions, including disbelief and regret. Section 3: A Moment of Clarity In the chaos following her fall, Whitney experienced an unexpected spiritual revelation. "I felt reassurance right away after I was feeling so much shame," she shared. Despite the physical agony, she found solace in knowing she was going to survive. This moment of clarity shifted her focus from despair to the practicalities of her situation. In the midst of pain and uncertainty, Whitney prioritized her family, even asking her sister to cancel upcoming appointments. Section 4: The Healing Journey Whitney's recovery was fraught with challenges, but her resilience shone through. With numerous injuries, including a broken pelvis and vertebrae, she faced a long road to healing. Throughout this journey, Whitney remained focused on her role as a mother and the lessons she wanted to impart to her children. Her experience serves as a poignant reminder that life can change in an instant, but our connections with loved ones can provide the strength to persevere. Conclusion: Key Takeaways Whitney Archibald's story is not just about overcoming adversity; it is a powerful reminder of the importance of connection, the value of vulnerability, and the necessity of embracing life's unpredictability. As she continues to share her insights through "The Family Lab," she encourages parents to experiment with their approaches and to remember that mistakes are part of the journey. Life's challenges may be daunting, but they also offer opportunities for growth, resilience, and deeper connections with those we love.

In this episode of First Generation Bowhunter, host Adam Buchanan sits down with Brad Brooks, founder of Argali Outdoors, to talk about the unexpected overlap between rock climbing, bow hunting, and building gear that actually works in the backcountry.Adam and Brad dig into how their shared obsession with climbing shaped their approach to bowhunting, why bow hunting has one of the steepest learning curves in the outdoors, and how persistence—not shortcuts—is the real key to success. They also compare the true cost of climbing vs. hunting, why hunters tend to obsess over gear, and how to avoid wasting money when you're getting started. The conversation goes deep into wild game as a primary food source, from preparation and cooking to why harvesting your own meat changes your relationship with food entirely. Brad also shares insight into how Argali gear is designed, why simplicity matters, and how innovation in hunting apparel and equipment is evolving to better serve serious hunters—not trends. They wrap with a real conversation about balancing family life, work, and hunting, why communication matters, and how learning from failure is unavoidable in both climbing and bowhunting. If you're a bowhunter, endurance athlete, climber, or someone trying to do hunting the right way—this episode hits.Brad is the founder of Argali Outdoors, known for lightweight, no-nonsense hunting gear built for real backcountry use.
In this final episode of the mini series The Mentorship Sessions, we are delighted to be joined by Emily Harrington and Hazel Findlay. Both of these women have accolades and accomplishments that speak for themselves, but let go ahead and name a few to start off. Emily was the fourth woman ever to free climb El Cap in a day, and the first woman to do so via the Golden Gate route, she's summited Mount Everest, is a very accomplished comp climber, and has the first female ascent of a number of worldwide 5.14s. Meanwhile Hazel has been a pro climber for over a decade, she was the first woman to climb a trad route rated E9, she's put up multiple first ascents on big walls, she was the 3rd person to send Magic Line (5.14c) in Yosemite, and is the Founder of StrongMind which focuses on mental training and fear management. The two of them were once teammates on the North Face team and went on a number of adventures across the world including a trip to big wall in Morocco, which we get into. They both discuss how becoming a mother has changed their approach to fear and risk management, and how to trust (and when not to trust) a mentor, setting boundaries, and their own mental training. In this episode—brought to you by OCUN, engineered for climbing—Kyra Condie and Freddie Kolwey dive into the numbers behind elite bouldering: how many women have climbed V14 or harder, how many men have climbed V16 or harder, and why climbing media still doesn't give women's achievements the attention they deserve. They unpack the shrinking space for stories that aren't tied to being “the first,” and how that pressure shapes which accomplishments make headlines. They also explore the frustrating pattern where a climb seems to lose some of its perceived impressiveness once a woman does it, and how this dynamic can unintentionally pit women against one another. Later, they break down the recent World Championships in Seoul, South Korea, and Kyra shares her experience at a uniquely formatted competition in France. Way out in the Canadian wilderness — six hours from the nearest city, little to no cell reception, surrounded by mossy forests and granite — lies a world-class bouldering destination. Secluded, quiet, and breathtakingly beautiful, The Nooks has quickly become one of the most talked-about new climbing areas in North America. With incredible rock quality and a massive spread of problems from V0 to V13, it's the kind of place that feels unreal the first time you see it.The Nooks was first discovered in 2018 by Michigan climber Brendan Baars. Since then, he has spent nearly every climbable weekend out there — cleaning hundreds of boulders, building trails, collaborating with the local community, and documenting the entire process alongside his close friend DJ Viernes. Brendan's vision and commitment have transformed a patch of remote forest into a full-blown destination area visited by hundreds of climbers a year — something that almost never happens on this scale. Today, I'm sitting down with both Brendan and DJ to talk about how it all came to be.In our conversation, we dive into the history of The Nooks, why Brendan fell in love with bouldering, and what it actually takes to develop an area of this size. We break down his first ascent of a new V13 called Deadliness, and get a deeper understanding of how The Nooks has shaped both Brendan's and DJ's lives over the last seven years. We also talk at length about DJ's new feature-length film The Developer, which documents the area and the process behind building it from the ground up. It's beautifully shot, full of heart, and we use it as a reference point throughout this conversation. If you're interested in watching The Developer, DJ has created an exclusive 20% discount for the first 50 listeners to check out the film, making it just $4 to rent or $16 to purchase. When Tim Dixon retired after more than 30 years in demolition, he wasn't sure what life after work would look like. The longtime West Chicago resident worried he would struggle to fill his days. The turning point came in 2018 when his daughter returned home from college in Seattle for Thanksgiving.

Randy Leavitt. As a climber who grew up in Southern California, I've been hearing this name since the very beginning of my climbing career. Collaborative inventor of the wide-crack climbing technique so aptly named “Leavittation,” developer of thousands of routes — with around a dozen graded 5.14 or harder, including Jumbo Love at Clark Mountain, the first 5.15 in the United States — and long-time athlete manager for Maxim Ropes… Randy's name has carried serious weight and inspiration for decades. A climbing legend if there ever was one.I actually remember listening to his episode on The Enormocast way back in 2012, when I was just getting started as a climber. So to now be sitting down with Randy in person, over thirteen years later, felt surreal. While Randy is best known for his achievements in the sport climbing world, the life behind the headlines tells a much broader story — one built on creativity, discipline, and a blue-collar work ethic. He found climbing young and quickly cut his teeth in Yosemite, climbing The Leaning Tower at age sixteen, The Zodiac and The Ephemeral Tis-sa-ack at seventeen, The Pacific Ocean Wall at 18, AND the first person ever to climb up — and then BASE jump off — El Capitan at just twenty. Back then, all of this was part of his bigger vision: to become a high-altitude mountaineer. But as he would discover throughout his life, his passion for business and financial independence remained just as strong, ultimately leading him toward a more balanced existence where climbing fit into a much larger picture. In our conversation, we explore Randy's 1986 expedition to the Karakoram — including summit pushes on Gasherbrum IV and The Nameless Tower. We revisit his gripping ascent of The Stratosfear in the Black Canyon; we talk about the origins of his business, the freedom it's given him, and his philosophy on route development, mentorship, and legacy. We also touch on a recent development in his health that has made climbing too painful to pursue — and how he's learning to navigate that new reality. Later, we take a deep dive into the climbing industry itself: how it really works, how athletes are chosen, and what brand support actually looks like. And finally, we reflect on how climbing culture has evolved over the decades — and why Randy believes the rise of climbing gyms has changed the sport more than anything else in history.Randy actually flew himself from San Diego to Las Vegas to do this interview in person, right here in my home studio. Welcome back for another episode of the Circle Up! Podcast. In this episode, Kyra and Allison go over what Allison has been up to in the recent months since she hasn't been on the podcast for a while. She's mainly been in the "pain cave" focusing on training now that she's healthy and was able to have a proper "off" season. Allison shares what she's been focusing on and how that focus on improving her weaknesses has actually helped hone in her training over the last couple months and make tangible improvements, even if it costs some margin on her strengths. Her and Kyra then go on a long tangent about board climbing and how it can be helpful in anyone's training of any level. Kyra shares some big updates on her end, like how she's gotten into trail running, her new position on the IFSC Board, and what events she has coming up.
Today I have the privilege to be sitting down with our previous guest Silas Rossi..Silas is an IFMGA Certified Mountain Guide and President of the AMGA organization. After Silas and I's last conversation in April, I've been jotting down a list of questions and reflections in preparation for our inevitable next conversation. So simply put, this conversation is a culmination of that list. We dive into a wide variety of topics; including nuanced gear questions surrounding rappelling, anchor building, fixed point belays, and clipping cams in sequence. We also explore more thoughtful questions like what it means to move away from fear and towards joy in our climbing. Or how we can balance learning through our own experience vs learning from the experie nce of others. We also get to hear about a guided trip early in Silas' career involving an epic with an older client in freezing whiteout conditions. As many of you already know, Silas is such a wealth of knowledge and wisdom and being able to sit down with him to pick his brain on such specific nuanced topics… was just really special.Last thing before we jump into the conversation. Just in case you're not aware, Silas Rossi has created an online community and mentorship program where you can learn from the experts in the best way possible. With Silas' Ascend Membership Program you get access to professional level mentorship, in depth education focusing on the why behind applying techniques, in person calls with Silas, and a wide variety of ever growing education modules around equipment, technical systems, physical training, philosophy, mindset and much much more. In a world where it can be hard to find a mentor and super expensive to hire a guide directly. Silas's ascend membership might just be the perfect middle ground you've been looking for to expand your climbing. Best of all. Silas has generously offered our community 15% off his annual Ascend Membership. All you have to do is click the link in our show notes or use code TCM2025 at check out. Organizations strive to stay true to their mission. The Watauga Land Trust was formed in 1995, established by Appalachian State University students concerned with protecting Howard Knob, a mountain adjacent to the Town of Boone. The new organization raised local awareness about the unprecedented pace of development not just around Boone, but across North Carolina's northwestern mountains. These concerns galvanized the local community and in 1997 the Watauga Land Trust changed its name to High Country Conservancy and expanded its jurisdiction to include Ashe, Avery and Watauga counties. The organization's mission was “to protect the natural resources of Appalachia by conserving land with significant ecological, cultural, recreational, or scenic value in the North Carolina High Country.”In May of 2010, Blue Ridge Rural Land Trust based in West Jefferson, North Carolina and High Country Conservancy, based in Boone merged to create Blue Ridge Conservancy, a private, non-profit organization that has protected over 22,000 acres in Alleghany, Ashe, Avery, Mitchell, Watauga, Wilkes and Yancey Counties. In early October 2025, Blue Ridge Conservancy announced after 30 years of effort, it has secured the opportunity to purchase 73 acres on the north and east side of Howard Knob. This property adjoins the existing 5-acre park owned by Watauga County, and will protect the land forever and provide public access for nature-based recreation, including hiking and rock climbing. On this week's Mind Your Business, we speak with Eric Hiegl, BRC's Senior Director of Land Protection and Conservation Planning. We'll hear about how the organization's persistence saw them achieve their founding objective. We'll also discuss BRC's plans to enhance public access to this property in a manner that enhances outdoor recreation opportunities in storied area of Watauga County.Mind Your Business is written and produced weekly by the Boone Area Chamber of Commerce. Thanks to Blue Ridge Conservancy for providing historical context to this story. In his earlier years, Kevin dedicated his life to the craft of climbing. He lived in a van, chased adventure across the globe, and devoted every ounce of his energy to the pursuit of performance. During that chapter, he climbed up to 5.13b, established several major first ascents, and ticked over fifteen hundred routes. Climbing wasn't just something Kevin did — it was who he was. His identity was built around his achievements, his grades, and his ever-growing tick list… until one day, everything changed. After successfully rope-soloing Freerider on El Cap, a dream that would represent the pinnacle of accomplishment for many, Kevin found himself not elated — but empty. Confused. Frustrated. Wondering what it all meant. That moment became a turning point — a quiet reckoning that forced him to question why he climbed in the first place. It was from that reflection that a new path emerged. Today, Kevin is an AMGA-Certified Rock Guide and co-owner of Vertical Pursuits, a guiding service based out of Lake Tahoe. His focus has shifted from personal performance to mentorship — helping everyday climbers build competence, confidence, and a deeper connection with the craft. In our conversation, we use Kevin's climbing stories as a framework to explore some of climbing's bigger questions. We start with his rope-solo ascent of Freerider — and how that experience reshaped his identity. Then, we dig into a story from his time climbing with Brad Gobright, using it to dissect the psychology of risk management. From there, we travel back into Kevin's dirtbag years and get to hear several increidble stories. A bear encounter in the Wind River Range. A remote big-wall first ascent in the wilds of British Columbia. And his time on the iconic Andean peak Alpamayo. We wrap up by exploring Kevin's guiding philosophy — how he sees mentorship as one of the most underutilized tools in modern climbing, and how professional instruction can change the way we learn, grow, and stay alive in the mountains. This conversation is full of honesty, vulnerability, and hard-won wisdom. I walked away from it reflecting on my own relationship with climbing, and I think you might too.Watch The Climbing Majority on Youtube---Thanks to our sponsors!LIVSN DesignsCheckout their Ecotrek Overalls HEREUse Code "TCM15" At Checkout for 15% OFF Your OrderHot Chillys Performance Base LayersCheckout their Clima-Tek Base Layer Systems HEREUse Code "TCM15" At Checkout for 15% OFF Your Order---Get Access to Exclusive Episodes, Unlock Ad-Free Podcast, & MORE!---ResourcesBook Kevin's Guide ServicesKevin's Personal WebsiteKevin's IGKevin's Mountain Project Profile---
The Glassbergs are no strangers to juggling chaos. Between running a production company (Louder Than 11), raising two-year-old twin girls, and traveling the world to capture some of the most impressive climbing of our time; their lives are full to the brim. Which is exactly why Kyra and Freddie thought they'd be a fantastic fit for the Mentorship Sessions Series. In this conversation, Jon and Jess open up about the challenges of parenthood, the exciting projects they're working on, Jess's crash course into climbing, Jon's own climbing journey, and Jess's PHD, among many other topics. Since recording, their feature length film GIRL CLIMBER—featuring Emily Harrington's groundbreaking free ascent of El Cap Free in a day—has been released, so be sure to check it out. This episode also shines a light on how mentorship can look different within a partnership, highlighting the ways couples can mentor and support each other across all areas of life. Justin Salas has a significant visual impairment. He lost his sight due to an undiagnosed optic neuropathy when he was 14. Imagine, you're a teenager fresh into highschool…you have ambitions to join the military, you already own a small business mowing lawns called J&J Lawn Care…everything seems within reach…and then in what seems like an instant…you lose your sight. While Justin is one of the most humble, capable humans I know…the impact this kind of loss has on the human mind cannot go understated. It's been over 16 years since Justin has lost his sight. During that time he has become the world's strongest outdoor paraclimbing boulderer, the first ever to climb V11. He is a sponsored athlete, he is building a business in the world of accessibility, and has found a life partner. And yet he still wrestles, almost daily, with the shadow of “what could have been.” His life split the day he lost his sight, and he can't help but wonder about the path not taken—the one with sight. In our conversation, we dig into how Justin thinks about his identity—as a climber and as a human. We talk about the maze of balancing independence with accepting help, and what Justin's climbing experience actually feels like: how he performs at a high level, the crucial role of sight guides, and why visualization matters—not just for him, but for all of us.We also get into choosing direction in life and how climbing can complicate our decision-making. We talk about the major pivot in Justin's life after learning that he won't be able to compete in the upcoming 2028 Olympics, what it's like to be a modern day climbing athlete, and finally we close off the conversation exploring the concept of mastery. Now, Justin and I love to go philosophical…and while you will see some of that in this episode, we also recorded an extra 45 minutes after this episode. We explore the concepts of stillness, fear, control, purpose, ambition, communication, and learning. If you like conversations where climbing is the lens but the subject is really how to live, this conversation is for you.Watch The Climbing Majority on Youtube---Thanks to our sponsors!LIVSN DesignsCheckout their Ecotrek Overalls HEREUse Code "TCM15" At Checkout for 15% OFF Your OrderHot Chillys Performance Base LayersCheckout their Clima-Tek Base Layer Systems HEREUse Code "TCM15" At Checkout for 15% OFF Your Order---Get Access to Exclusive Episodes, Unlock Ad-Free Podcast, & MORE!---ResourcesJustin's IG---

In this episode Kyra Condie and Freddie Kolwey chat about how sometimes your mood (and let's be honest) your self worth is tied to sending a rock. Kyra experienced this on her latest trip to Africa, talking about how projecting was wearing down on her and how she had a specific day where the goal was to stand on top of “anything”. Kyra and Freddie both share stories relating to how their mood has improved after sending or how they've managed that, and whether that is an inherently “bad” thing or not. Then they talk about what it's like to climb with a climbing parter who has a very different ability level than yourself, whether that's much better or much worse. Freddie shares how she's framed climbing with people who are stronger than her and Kyra shares how she sometimes finds it easier to climb alone when the social dynamics get too complicated or are taking away from the quality of her session. China is currently experiencing a rapid surge in the popularity of rock climbing, a trend propelled by its debut as an Olympic sport, an expanding middle class with a growing emphasis on health and wellness, and widespread sharing on social media platforms. As participation diversifies across age and demographic groups, the sport's future trajectory is clearly oriented toward the formal development of competitive circuits and its deeper integration into domestic tourism and adventure travel initiatives. / Round Table's Happy Place (15:16)!
