When you hear talk about hospice, you're usually talking about humans, not pachyderms. However, on the South Coast, Ruth the elephant, who's been living for decades at the Buttonwood Park Zoo, is entering hospice as she nears the end of her life. Ruth has been a highlight at the zoo for generations, with residents from all over the South Coast and beyond coming to spend time with her. Zoo Director Gary Lunsford talks with Nichole about her health conditions and the decision to transition her care.

Our latest Legendary Show Dissection takes us back to 2004 as Primus marauded across North America to bring Frizzle Fry in its entirety to the masses in a two-set evening-with format. On this particular evening, the band graced the crowd with what we believe is a record of six consecutive songs on the six-string fretless "rainbow" bass. Considering that the rainbow is retired due to age and sentimental value, and replaced by a fantastic Pachyderm sixer, this specific feat may never be replicated. In this riveting episode of "The Chris Abraham Show," host Chris Abraham embarks on a nuanced exploration of the rapidly evolving societal fabric, unveiling the fragile underpinnings of our institutional trust and the consequences of its potential collapse. Chris initiates his discourse by delving into the time-tested realm of religious institutions. Historically, they wielded unmatched influence, yet today, their once uncontested authority finds a rival in modern institutions—journalists and academies. Universities, including iconic names like Harvard, Yale, Princeton, and Stanford, while revered as intellectual sanctuaries, may increasingly be perceived as epicenters of privilege and potential targets in times of societal discord. With the increasingly evident disparity between the ultra-wealthy and the working class, Abraham warns of the simmering undercurrents of civil unrest. As he threads through the complexities of our time, he touches upon the looming threats of ecoterrorism and climate terrorism. Could these be the contemporary world's attempts at restoring a semblance of socio-economic equilibrium? Drawing from historical episodes like the LA riots, Abraham sheds light on the human propensity for opportunism in times of chaos. The widespread narrative of climate change, while addressing a pressing global concern, might also offer a convenient smokescreen for individual agendas and unethical activities. In a particularly compelling segment, Chris delves into the power dynamics in the post-Trump era. He tackles perceptions of majority and minority, revealing how societal narratives can distort realities and perpetuate feelings of powerlessness, even amongst those who might be in the majority. This culminates in an introduction to the 'pachyderm paradox,' a paradigm that exposes the distortions and deceptions of dominant narratives. Concluding on a somber note, Abraham turns his gaze towards the hallowed institution of justice. Stripping away the metaphors and symbols, he presents a candid view of the contemporary justice system, prompting listeners to question and reflect on the values and beliefs that have long shaped our society. Glossary: Pachyderm Paradox: A conceptual framework suggesting that prevailing societal narratives can craft distorted realities, where the majority feels overpowered despite their numerical strength. Ecoterrorism: Deliberate acts of violence committed under the banner of environmental activism. Climate Terrorism: Violent acts or threats influenced by, or in response to, environmental and climate-related changes. Populism: A political doctrine that appeals to the concerns of regular people, often positing them against a perceived privileged elite. LA Riots: A series of violent upheavals in Los Angeles, California, in 1992, stemming from the acquittal of police officers on trial for the beating of Rodney King. Tyranny of the Minority: A situation where a numerically smaller group wields disproportionate influence or power over the majority. Panopticon: An architectural design by philosopher Jeremy Bentham, often used as a metaphor for society's power dynamics, where individuals feel under continuous observation, leading to self-regulation. Blindfolded Justice: An emblematic representation of justice, symbolizing its unbiased and impartial nature. Join Chris Abraham for this enlightening episode, as he unravels the intricate tapestry of societal trust, challenging age-old narratives and urging introspection. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/chrisabraham/support

Summary Data is a team sport, but it's often difficult for everyone on the team to participate. For a long time the mantra of data tools has been "by developers, for developers", which automatically excludes a large portion of the business members who play a crucial role in the success of any data project. Quilt Data was created as an answer to make it easier for everyone to contribute to the data being used by an organization and collaborate on its application. In this episode Aneesh Karve shares the journey that Quilt has taken to provide an approachable interface for working with versioned data in S3 that empowers everyone to collaborate. Announcements Hello and welcome to the Data Engineering Podcast, the show about modern data management Truly leveraging and benefiting from streaming data is hard - the data stack is costly, difficult to use and still has limitations. Materialize breaks down those barriers with a true cloud-native streaming database - not simply a database that connects to streaming systems. With a PostgreSQL-compatible interface, you can now work with real-time data using ANSI SQL including the ability to perform multi-way complex joins, which support stream-to-stream, stream-to-table, table-to-table, and more, all in standard SQL. How does Quilt compare with options such as LakeFS, Unstruk, Pachyderm, etc.? Can you describe how Quilt is implemented? What are the types of tools and systems that Quilt gets integrated with? How do you manage the tension between supporting the lowest common denominator, while providing options for more advanced capabilities? What is a typical workflow for a team that is using Quilt to manage their data? What are the most interesting, innovative, or unexpected ways that you have seen Quilt used? The band was formed in 2012 when a few longtime friends and high school classmates got together in a basement to cover their favorite songs. As the band grew and evolved they traded covers for original music and began to develop a live improvisational chemistry that would come to define their sound. They released their debut self-titled EP in January 2015, a blues and garage-rock influenced set that compiles four highlights from the band's early material. After the EP's release, the band took a drastic sonic turn, opting for more lush, mellow, and psychedelic textures. This approach culminated in their first full-length album Live at the Fillmore, released in August of 2016. The band was formed in 2012 when a few longtime friends and high school classmates got together in a basement to cover their favorite songs. As the band grew and evolved they traded covers for original music and began to develop a live improvisational chemistry that would come to define their sound. If a feather fell from a weather bell, would you wonder whether your will would be well? Or would wonder well in your whither well till your whethers wilt as your feathers filled? Do you know the answer? It takes puzzling the sphinxian riddle to cross the threshold into the King's Chamber. But cross it we do! Welcome back for the first time to episode 18 of the Post Relevant Podcast. This just might be the very most ultimates-est and super-bestest episode of the podcast ever created in three-dimensional time space! Or even in 7 dimensional thrime-space! (Thrime-space is sort of like time-space, but in in the 7th dimension...it's too hard to explain right now....) Reaching new levels of sound design and special effects, the King's Chamber is a right banger, I must say! Brother Andy returns once again to hash it out with show host Phil Ristaino, and they re-create the scene in "Under the Silver Lake" where Sam is chained to a chair in a bear cave and has to explain his way out of possessing dog biscuits to the mysterious Homeless King. You might ask, how can you make a two hour podcast about a 5 minute scene in a movie from 2018? Well, look, its possible, ok? You gotta listen to the show to find out. You should get an answer right around the 2 hour mark, keep listening.... Here's how the truths are revealed: 1. We enter the great pyramid and confront the futuristic riddle. 2. Phil and Andy make several left turns at Albuquerque as they remember Bugs Bunny's "Wackiki Rabbit," ask why brother Mark is avoiding being on the show, how Death loves showbiz in "Bill and Ted's Bogus Journey," how to speak English with a bad Swedish accent, who is a hamburger and who is a hotdog, and how to effortlessly create your own foley for a podcast by banging and clanging stuff off-handedly while recording. Among other things! This beginning of the show is most non-heinous! 3. Max Flackman (aka Matt Kalman, guest from the infamous episode 13 where Phil and Max get drunk) re-emerges from the woodlands of upstate NY to respond to Phil's revelations of all the lies Oliver Stone foisted on the unsuspecting public when he released his 90s epic "The Doors." Hint - Jim Morrison never killed a duck. Gasp! That's just scratching the surface.... 4. Yet another brand new song is played, entitled "Tall Girl." Pretty self-explanatory. 5. In the decode section of the show, we talk about being pregnant in a float tank and arguing with Judge Mablean on national TV. Andy talks about the imminent arrival of his new baby. Phil explores the UTSL reddit. Phil digs into the relationship between Homeless King actor David Yow and Kurt Cobain. Phil re-investigates the Horned God/Osiris/Green Man connections in the movie. Phil and Andy re-ennact the aforementioned scene between the Homeless King and Sam. Is the truth revealed? We notice Sam's been sitting on his gun the whole time. Phil and Andy finish the episode still trying to figure out what "Hamburgers Are Love" means....
