Federal cuts threaten AmeriCorps program For more than 10 years, the New York-New Jersey Trail Conference's stewards have built and maintained trails, removed invasive species and prevented an untold number of hikers from hurting themselves. "We've plotted it out on a graph, and during the times when the trail stewards are on duty, the need for EMS [emergency medical services] is almost completely eliminated," said Hank Osborn, a Philipstown native who is director of programs for NYNJTC. This is most noticeable at Breakneck Ridge, he said. Before the Trail Conference assigned stewards to the trailhead, local first responders assisted with two or three rescues every weekend. That may change this season because of cuts to AmeriCorps by Elon Musk's Department of Government Efficiency, although a federal court on Thursday (June 5) issued a preliminary injunction to prevent them. The initiative typically provides stipends for living expenses for about 50 volunteers to assist the Trail Conference each spring. Essentially a domestic version of the Peace Corps, the 30-year-old program also offers educational funding for volunteers, such as financial aid for college and the repayment of student loans. This year, the Trump administration cut funding right before the stewards were scheduled to begin, Osborn said. Volunteers around the country were told to pack up and go back home. State grants have allowed NYNJTC to retain about half of its original crew, and the Trail Conference has launched a fundraising campaign to keep the rest. A matching grant of up to $50,000 is in place through Saturday (June 7), which is National Trails Day. The money raised so far will provide stipends for stewards at Breakneck every weekend through mid-October, Osborn said. The lower section is closed because of construction of the Hudson Highlands Fjord Trail's Breakneck Connector, scheduled to open in 2027. But the upper sections are open, and stewards will be stationed at the flagpole after the first ascent and at key intersections of the Ninham, Wilkinson and Undercliff trails. "They'll continue to greet visitors, teach Leave No Trace principles and help people figure out the best routes to take so that they don't accidentally stumble into the construction zone," he said. At the Breakneck trailhead, the stewards made sure visitors knew what they were getting themselves into - a rocky, steep ascent. If they arrived ill-prepared, such as by wearing flip-flops or not having water, stewards directed them to a more appropriate hike. "They keep people who shouldn't be going up Breakneck from ever getting hurt or lost," Osborn said. Usually, Breakneck stewards spend their weekdays on trail maintenance. But with fewer stewards, the crew instead will help with rebuilding trails at Harriman State Park damaged in the July 2023 storms. Despite the partial closure at Breakneck, Osborn expects a busy season. "With all of these changes at the federal level, it appears that the need for nature and to get out into the woods for people is more important than ever before," he said. Today, Leave No Trace Ireland launched its annual "Love This Place" campaign, calling on the public to come together to protect Ireland's rich natural landscapes, so we can all enjoy them responsibly as we head into the summer season. Now in its fifth year, the national awareness campaign is supported by partners including the Department of Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht, the Office of Public Works, Coillte, Sport Ireland, Waterways Ireland, Wicklow Co Council, Galway Co Council, Clare Co Council & Cork City Council - all dedicated to promoting responsible outdoor recreation and environmental stewardship. With more people than ever seeking connection with nature - through hiking, swimming, dog-walking and exploring - this year's "Love This Place" campaign reinforces the simple message: "If you love this place, leave no trace." The Need for Protection Ireland's great outdoors has seen a sharp rise in popularity in recent years, with over 98% of residents valuing time spent in nature. However, increased footfall has also brought challenges: trail erosion, littering, dog fouling, wildlife disturbance, and an increase in wildfires - 96% of which are linked to human activity. "Our message is clear," said Maura Kiely, CEO of Leave No Trace Ireland, "We all have a part to play in preserving the places and wildlife we love. This campaign invites everyone enjoying the outdoors this summer, from seasoned hikers to dog owners, to take simple, mindful steps to protect our natural landscapes." Campaign Highlights Throughout the summer, "Love This Place" will roll out: A digital storytelling campaign featuring voices from across Ireland: farmers, walkers, dog owners, and community groups. On-the-ground events and clean-up days coordinated with local authorities and environmental groups. Education initiatives and social media toolkits for influencers, schools, and tourism partners. Taking Action The "Love This Place" 2025 campaign shares three tangible actions for the public to take: Be responsible with your dog - Keep dogs on a lead, especially around farm animals and wildlife, and always clean up after them. Protect Wildlife and wild places - Bring all litter home, don't feed wild animals, and watch wildlife from a safe distance. Stay on the path - Stick to marked trails to avoid damaging habitats or disturbing animals, both seen and unseen. A Shared Responsibility "Our land is not just scenic - it's living," added Kiely. "It feeds us, shelters biodiversity, and connects our communities. Respecting it is not about restriction, but about care and responsibility. We're so grateful to the public and our partners for supporting "Love This Place" - we ask everyone to take action and join the movement because protecting the places we love means we can continue to enjoy them in the future." Speaking about the launch Dara Calleary TD. Minister for Social Protection and Minister for Rural and Community Development and the Gaeltacht said, "Ireland's natural heritage is one of our greatest assets - environmentally, culturally, and economically. The "Love This Place" campaign reminds us that with this privilege comes responsibility. By embracing the principles of Leave No Trace, we protect our landscapes and support efforts to tackle our declining biodiversity. Even small actions matter, helping us to work in greater harmony and building the resilience of nature across the country. I am proud to support this campaign and encourage everyone to play their part." To learn more or get involved, visit: www.leavenotraceireland.org/love-this-place

Randee and her mom are very close. They have a wonderful relationship and Randee says "she's my best cheerleader."  A lot of that has to do with the honesty and open communication that they had from the very beginning-"adoption was normal, not a stigma, not a tragedy."  Also, Randee learned at a young age that just because you are blood related doesn't guarantee you a loving relationship.Lois was definitely a role model to Randee. But Randee also feels that she learned from things that Lois did and didn't t do and then would form her own opinions. Randee had the luxury of knowing that her mom "always had my back.".Unfortunately, growing up in the 70's, Randee's parents divorced and her mom went to work. She was able to get contract work, writing and editing government contracts. It was a stressful time for Lois, but she made the best of it. For example, her office didn't have a window, so she decided to put a picture of a window up on the wall. That made it feel so much better."The Only Songs We're Singing," was released April 2025 and "Leave No Trace" will be released August 2025.In “The Only Song Worth Singing”, the power of friendship is one of the major themes blended with myth and the power of music. She tells us about how her music fan attitude led to her working with the band Ivy, which turned into some really fascinating online blog projects. Then we discuss how she came to write for Alternative Press magazine, The Hollywood Reporter, and Soap Opera Digest, basically at the same time. In her soap opera journalism career, she covered: One Life To Live, Another World, and maybe just a bit on Passions!. Naturally I ask her about her interviewing Vincent D'Onofrio about the Forest Witaker TV show The Godfather of Harlem. Even though Randee made a bit of a name for herself writing Law & Order speculative fiction, that didn't come up in her interview with Vincent. Finally, we dive into Randee's books! Besides having developed an audience in the speculative fiction area, Randee Dawn has written a bunch of books. Her fun and dynamic storytelling has gotten her multiple novels published in a relatively short period of time. 'Tune In Tomorrow', 'Don't Touch That Dial', 'Leave No Trace', and 'The Only Song Worth Singing' have catapulted Randee into a new level of popularity. These novels have become so popular that the publishers are dying for more! Check out all of her work at RandeeDawn.com and find her on all the socials at Randee Dawn. Thomasin McKenzie is this week's guest—star of Edgar Wright's ‘Last Night in Soho', Mark's film of the year 2018 ‘Leave No Trace'—and now ‘Joy', a new Netflix drama about the development of IVF treatment at Oldham hospital in the 1970s. Written by Jack Thorne, the film's medical miracle story is focalised through McKenzie's character Jean Purdy—a talented embryologist whose work was key to the team's breakthrough discovery, but whose name was left out of the history books. She chats to Simon about putting Jean back in the picture in this latest in a line of meaty and challenging roles for the young actor. Reviews this week of ‘Blink', a poignant documentary following a family determined to travel the world and create precious visual memories for their three children, who are losing their sight—and Amrou Al-Kadhi's debut drag queen drama ‘Layla', which follows the story of the titular performer (Bilal Hasna) as they discover their confidence and creativity whilst navigating their queer Arab identity. Plus the much-anticipated stage-to-screen musical ‘Wicked'. The Wizard of Oz prequel stars Cynthia Erivo as green-skinned misfit Elphaba, and Ariana Grande as glam girl Galinda, both still witches-to-be as they forge an unlikely and rocky friendship at university. We find out if Mark thinks it's going to be ‘Pop-u-lar'... Plus top quality correspondence from you and typical witterings from the Good Doctors as per. Tom Price co-founded Burners Without Borders, Black Rock Solar, and a company that gifts clean-burning kitchens to people in Kenya.Tom and Stuart talk about the weather, specifically hurricanes, and how Burners Without Borders started and persists in the face of extreme circumstances because Burners are extreme!Tom's tales of adventure include paperwork pranks and ad hoc Cajun catharsis. If Burning Man is a permission engine, giving people agency in their lives, he says that part of the lesson of Burning Man is finding out what is too much permission, then stepping back, and building aptitude to have agency, and responsibility for it. Note: The sponsor names joked about here are NOT sponsors of Burning Man, because Decommodification!Burners Without BordersBlack Rock SolarTom Price: Burning Man JournalBurning Man LIVE: Tom Price and the Benefactor's Dilemma (2022)Burning Man LIVE: Creative Solutions to Mass Destruction (2020)TEDx Black Rock City: Tom Price: Beyond Burning Man (2011)ecosafi.com LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG

Academics from everywhere experiment, collaborate, and even interpret our stories of "This one time at Burning Man."In this episode, Stuart talks with people from Burning Nerds, an annual gathering of academics in Black Rock City. They keep it light, though; not too many unnecessarily fancy words. Dr Jukka-Pekka Heikkilä shares about the Open Strategy management technique used by Burning Man Project that gives more power to the people. Bryan Yazell and Patricia Wolf of University of Southern Denmark report on using Flash Fiction in BRC to develop a new subgenre of sci-fi called climate fiction (‘cli-fi'), stories that are less dystopian, even less utopian, more protopian (fancy word) about society that improves over time, rather than transcending all it's problems or descending into dysfunction.Professor Matt Zook of University of Kentucky extols the unique aspects of Black Rock City, from materiality to temporality, to being a place apart. He and Stuart explore the interplay between digital and physical spaces, and what about community actually makes it good. Then Jukka-Pekka Heikkilä returns to reveal how the Burning Stories project, now in its 6th year of tracking tales, is now a cultural repository, and is training a gifted AI on how Burners be Burning.jukkapekka.comsdu.dk/en/persons/yazellsdu.dk/en/persons/pawogeography.as.uky.edu/users/zookburningman.org/programs/philosophical-center/academicsregionals.burningman.org/european-leadership-summitburning-stories.comkk.org/thetechnium/protopiasdu.dk/en/paca-at-burning-man-festival-2024 LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG

Everywhere? Regional events actively align with Burning Man's 10 Principles. 85 official events happen in 30 countries, with collectively more participants and more art grants than the original Nevada event. After 25 years, the combined regional presence is huge, diverse, and evolving, and it all started in one place: Black Rock City. Whether you're Burning in New York or New Zealand, all backroads lead back to BRC.We called a bunch of the Regional leaders to see how things are going out in their other homes away from home. We heard from Argentina, China, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Italy, New Zealand, and even the far-flung realms of Texas and Kentucky.Play this mixtape of people sharing stories from everywhere in the world.regionals.burningman.orgAnd here's a related episode from 2022: burningman.org/podcast/burning-man-is-not-a-place LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG

Thousands and thousands of people volunteer each year at Black Rock City, for days, weeks, or months. Add to that the volunteers at the many Regional events around the world and it's more than can be counted on fingers and toes. Why do we volunteer? Is it because we feel we received a gift and we want to pay it back or pay it forward? Is it a meditation of hard work (in a hard place to work) to add dimension to our experience? Is it the chance to be something different, for a pixel pusher to build something with bare hands, an engineer to cook for artists, a project manager to be a… manager of a different kind of project?Yes.We interviewed a few longtime citizens of BRC about why they volunteer with the Greeters, with DPW, and the Man Base. Here are some stories from Topless Deb, Tamsin, Ruin, Terra, and a guy named Fuckyeah.https://burningman.org/event/participate/volunteering/teams LIVE.BURNINGMAN.ORG
