Was habt ihr schon selbst gebaut? Was hat gut funktioniert, was vielleicht nicht?

In this episode of the Innovations and Clinical Implementation podcast recorded at LongevityFest 2025, host Dr. Lexi Gonzales explores how AI is revolutionizing functional medicine workflows with guests Sunita Mohanty and Crystal Brust. Sunita Mohanty is the CEO and co-founder of Ultralight (formerly Vibrant Practice) and. Crystal Brust is a Stanford-trained functional medicine Physician Assistant and founder of Farm to Functional Medicine. The conversation highlights how the Vibrant Practice platform addresses clinician burnout by integrating AI directly into the electronic health record (EHR) to automate documentation and synthesize complex patient data—such as genetics and timelines—into actionable insights. The guests emphasize that this "full stack" approach not only saves time but transforms the medical record from a static repository into an interactive tool that restores joy, creativity, and confidence to the provider-patient relationship. Is an ultralight backpacking stove really lighter when you factor in the extra fuel it burns? In this video, I put the MSR Pocket Rocket 2 head-to-head against the MSR WindBurner to find out. I ran extensive lab tests, measured fuel efficiency, compared total system weights, and looked at real-world packability to help you decide which stove is best for your backcountry hunts and backpacking trips. Whether you're a hunter shaving ounces for a goat hunt, or a backpacker planning a 10-day alpine trip, this review gives you the data and context you need to make the right call. Brady sits down with Danny Barreto of Airlock Industries to dig into what makes the Zero Gravity suppressors such a standout for hunters—especially when ounces, durability, and real-world performance all matter. Plus, the backstory on how he helped Brady rethink using a suppressor for hunting. They break down Airlock's engineering-first design philosophy—more time spent in development and testing, less time chasing flashy marketing hype—and what that means for backcountry hunters. From rifle setup and hearing protection to practical field considerations, this episode covers how to think about suppression as part of a complete hunting system. And Brady gets to the big question: why does Airlock seem to be everywhere so fast? If you've been curious about going suppressed for hunting (or you already do and want to nerd out on the why), this one's for you.Learn more about GOHUNT.Follow Brady on Instagram.Follow GOHUNT on Social Media:InstagramYouTube - Podcast ChannelYouTube - Main ChannelFacebook

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio presented by The Trek, we are joined by Alan Dixon, better known in the backpacking world as Adventure Alan. Alan is a literal rocket scientist, a lifelong adventure junkie, and a foundational figure in the early days of ultralight backpacking, having co-founded Backpacking Light. Alan shares some jaw dropping stories from his many routes, including a near-death experience in the Tetons, his philosophy for developing routes—most notably his popular Wind River High Route, the South Sierra High Route, and the Escalante Overland Route. We dig into how he's managed to bring his base weight down to as low as 2.4 lb., the small luxuries he now allows himself, some of his favorite cottage brands, and his overarching gear philosophies. We also talk about why he follows a ketogenic diet and how he maintains it on trail, his adventures with his wife of more than 20 years, and much more. What if you could tour with just what fits in a single dry bag? No panniers. Just the essentials. On this episode, we take this as a challenge - borrowing from the ultralight backpacking folks, we cut off our toothbrush handles and weigh every gram for the ultralight bikepacking challenge! "What if you could tour with just what fits in your handlebar bag? No panniers. No rack. Just the essentials." Why: curiosity, simplicity, nimble handling, testing limits for overnighters or credit card touring. Rules: one mid-size drybag (say 10–12L). No extra frame or seat bags. Trip assumptions: 1–2 nights, shoulder season, mild weather but possible cool nights. Riding style: paved/mixed surfaces, moderate daily mileage. Shelter Options to debate: Tarp + bivy sack (light, cheap, minimal bug protection). Minimal trekking pole tarp (if you carry a pole or can use the bike). Emergency bivy + bug net (super small but spartan). UL single-wall tent (if you can compress to fit — ~1lb tents exist). Hammock Where I land: Shelter Zpacks Hexamid Pocket Tarp 5.2 oz Dyneema, no floor; packs to fist size Groundsheet Polycryo sheet (cut to size) 1.5 oz Cheap and super compact Bug Net Sea to Summit Nano Pyramid (solo) 2.9 oz Optional if mosquitoes likely Stakes 6 titanium shepherd hooks 2 oz Can share with tarp Guyline 2 mm reflective cord 1 oz Multipurpose (also for repairs) Total Shelter Weight: ~12 oz (340 g) Sleep Kit Pad: short closed-cell foam (Z-lite cut down) vs ultralight inflatable (NeoAir Uberlite). Quilt: 40°F down quilt packs to a grapefruit. Sleep Clothing layering: puffy jacket + base layers to extend quilt rating. pillow (there are some ultralight inflatables too) Where I land: Sleep Pad Therm-a-Rest NeoAir UberLite (small) 6 oz Packs smaller than a soda can Quilt Enlightened Equipment Enigma 40°F 13 oz Compresses to a grapefruit Pillow Exped Air UL pillow (small) 1.6 oz Optional luxury Sleep Clothes Lightweight merino top + boxer briefs 6 oz Doubles as camp wear Total Sleep Weight: ~27 oz (765 g) Cooking vs. No-Cook No-cook: bars, wraps, cold soak jar. Minimal cook: Esbit/solid fuel stove + titanium mug. Coffee strategy: instant packets vs small UL brewer. Space/weight trade-off: ditch cook kit for luxury (camera, extra clothes). Where I land: Cold Soak System Plastic PB jar 2oz Utensil Long Ti spoon 0.5 oz Mug (if separate) MSR Titan 2.4 oz Food for 2 days Wraps, instant oatmeal, nuts, bars, jerky, instant coffee ~24 oz Water 1 L Smartwater bottle (frame-mounted) Total Cooking/Food Weight (excluding water): ~29 oz (820 g) Clothing & Tools No change of clothes on this one… one base layer, puffy jacket layer. Rain shell = big payoff for little space. Simple wool hat Micro tool kit: multi-tool, chain link, tiny pump, patch kit instead of spare tube. hygiene: Dr Bronner's in smallest travel bottle, small camp towel, travel toothbrush. Where I land: Rain Shell Patagonia Houdini or OR Helium 6 oz Ultralight but reliable Insulation Layer Montbell Plasma 1000 puffy 5 oz Packs to palm size Extra Base Layer / socks Wool top + socks 5 oz For camp Toiletries Toothbrush, mini paste, Bronner's, wet wipes 3 oz Minimalist hygiene Headlamp Nitecore NU25 1 oz USB rechargeable Total Clothing/Personal Weight: ~20 oz (570 g) Multitool Lezyne RAP II-12 3 oz Compact essentials Mini Pump Lezyne Pocket Drive 3 oz Mount to frame if possible Chain link / tape / zip ties / patch kit Small zip bag 1 oz Field repairs Phone + powerbank 10 000 mAh Anker 6 oz Also powers headlamp Map / ID / Credit Card — negligible "Ultralight credit card touring" insurance Total Tools/Misc Weight: ~13 oz (370 g) Packing Tetris Bottom: sleep system (quilt/compressed pad). Middle: shelter/tarp. Top: food/clothing. Outside: light rain shell/camp shoes? Safety & Bail Out Options Emergency bail plan: credit card, rideshare, motel. Weather veto: if forecast turns ugly, change trip. My Packed Total Category Weight Shelter 12 oz Sleep 27 oz Cooking/Food 29 oz Clothing/Personal 20 oz Tools/Misc 13 oz Total ~6.31 lb (2.86 kg) inside dry bag Conclusion Who this works for: weekenders, credit card tourists, fair-weather minimalists. Who it doesn't: long winter trips, remote routes with no services, the comfort-oriented The psychological side of going this minimal: what you gain (freedom, simplicity) vs. what you lose (comfort, margin).

Ultralight, All Heart: Adirondack Pack Canoes by HornbeckGuest: Josh Trombley, head of Hornbeck BoatsTopic: The Adirondack pack canoe—past, present, and why it changes how (and how often) people get on the water.Hornbeck Boats began in the 1970s with founder Pete Hornbeck, a paddler-artist who revived the Adirondack tradition of pack boats—open, canoe-shaped craft paddled with a double-blade. Pete's minimalist ethos (light, durable, no unnecessary weight) and his embrace of Kevlar created boats that many paddlers—especially solo and older paddlers—could lift, carry, and launch on their own.Josh shares:The origin story (from fiberglass kayaks to Kevlar pack boats)What makes a Hornbeck unique (lightweight performance, “patina of use,” red stripe lore)Who buys them (a surprising number of women, Boundary Waters travelers, and—newly—duck hunters)The demo pond, pandemic pivots, and the move to Hornbeck Midwest (Minnesota)The creative legacy of Pete & Anne Hornbeck—and a “museum of failure” that led to better boatsA favorite Adirondack spot: 13th Lake in North RiverWhy it matters: a Hornbeck often means more days on the water—and the independence to go where motors don't.Learn more: hornbeckboats.com • adktaste.co/talks043Love the show? In this episode, I sit down with Dan Durston, founder and lead designer of Durston Gear, to dive deep into the world of ultralight shelters, backcountry design, and the future of small gear companies taking on the giants. We talk about Dan's journey from long-distance thru-hikes like the Pacific Crest Trail and Great Divide Trail, to daydreaming gear ideas in the wilderness, to accidentally founding one of the most respected ultralight gear brands today. This conversation goes beyond shelters—it's about innovation, passion-driven design, and how democratized manufacturing has opened the door for boutique companies to challenge industry leaders. In this episode, we discuss how to design scalable, evidence-informed first aid kits for backcountry travel. Grounded in the principles of context, consequence, and capability, he outlines three modular kit configurations - Overnight, Weekend, and Weeklong/Expedition - and explains their medical rationale, typical use cases, and practical contents. Listeners will learn how to match kit design to trip demands, avoid common planning mistakes, and implement a reliable maintenance protocol. In this Field Notes episode, Ryan Jordan explores what happens when wilderness minimalism reaches its limits. Through real-world examples and the lenses of physiology, psychology, and Stoic philosophy, we examine how stripped-down gear systems perform under stress — and how they fail. We'll look at five high-risk scenarios, lessons from Epictetus and Seneca, and why both lightness and resilience should guide our backcountry decisions. In this Field Notes (shorts) episode, host Ryan Jordan challenges a widely held ultralight backpacking belief: that camp chairs are a luxury. Drawing on personal experience, recovery science, and biomechanical insights, Ryan explores how sitting well in the backcountry isn't just about comfort - it's about physiological and cognitive recovery. You'll learn why your posture at rest impacts your blood flow, muscle recovery, decision-making, and nervous system tone - and how a simple camp chair might be one of the most overlooked performance tools in your pack. We'll also unpack the baggage around the word luxury, and reframe gear decisions through the lens of function, not dogma. If you've ever questioned whether a chair belongs in your kit, or if you're curious how small decisions impact long-term performance in the backcountry, this episode offers a fresh, data-informed perspective. Takeaway: Recovery isn't passive. It's a skill - and how you sit at camp might matter more than you think. To view the shownotes for this episode of the Backpacking Light Podcast, click here.

In today's episode of Backpacker Radio, presented by The Trek, brought to you by LMNT, we are joined by Austen McDaniel, known on trail as PI. If that name sounds familiar, it's because we've been reading it off at the end of every episode for years, as Austen is one of our Chuck Norris Award-winning Patreon supporters. But in addition to being a longtime patron, Austen is also one hell of a backpacker, having completed the Triple Crown in three consecutive years. He approached his first thru-hike as prepared as anyone we've ever talked to, hitting the Appalachian Trail with a six-pound base weight after years of fine-tuning his setup on various shakedown hikes. He walks us through how he's managed to shave additional ounces and grams off his pack, shares some fun ultralight hacks, and offers tips for making cold soaking suck less. Of course, we also dive deep into his three thru-hikes. Beyond hiking, Austen gives us a glimpse into his life as a professional tennis instructor, if he's seducing moms at the country club, and how he managed to squeeze in some disc golf in various trail towns during his CDT trek. We wrap the show with news of an massive new FKT on New Zealand's Te Araroa, a breakdown of just how much Irish heritage runs through our DNA, including some truly deranged family tree math from Chaunce, the triple crown of food combinations, and possibly the greatest limerick in the history of the written language.
