Clemmie Burton Hill on the podcast today. I became friends with Clemmie years ago now when she interviewed me at Hay festival about my book and ever since then we spoke about books, work, life and everything in between. Clemmie is a broadcaster, author, novelist, journalist, violinist and a lover of arts and music. On the morning of January the 20th 2020, only weeks before the pandemic turned the world upside dow, Clemmie suffered a catastrophic brain injury. One moment she was in a meeting in New York where she lives with her husband and two children. She is one of the most inspirational and magical people I know. Today we're discussing her brilliant book, Another Year of Wonder, a fantastic book making classical music more accessible to everyone with a song for every day. She's given me a song for every mood and every feeling that I can't really conjure up with words. I hope you enjoy this episode. My Substack page, come and say hi: https://thehyphen.substack.com/Clemmie's book: https://uk.bookshop.org/a/153/9781472259370My books: https://uk.bookshop.org/contributors/emma-gannonBooks mentioned on Ctrl Alt Delete podcast: https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/books-mentioned-on-ctrl-alt-delete-podcastTwitter: Twitter.com/emmagannonInstagram: Instagram.com/emmagannonukCHOOSE LOVE: https://chooselove.org/Max Richter: https://www.maxrichtermusic.com/ See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

This one comes to you straight from my heart. Clemmie Burton-Hill is one of my closest friends. She is also one of the most accomplished and brilliant people I know - a gifted violinist, a wonderful author, a talented actor, a peerless broadcaster, a fantastic mother, a wildly loyal friend. But in January 2020, her life changed forever. Clemmie suffered a brain haemorrhage and a massive stroke. She underwent emergency surgery and spent 17 days in a coma. When she regained consciousness, it was to a radically different reality. Clemmie had to relearn how to walk, talk and write. She had to re-learn how to be. No-one was sure how much of her brain she would recover. And yet, Clemmie set about defying every single medical expectation made of her. Now, almost two years later, she is miraculously herself again. Her recovery is still ongoing, but in the midst of this personal trauma she has achieved the unimaginable and written a new book. Another Year of Wonder is a follow-up to her much-loved Year of Wonder, and offers up one extraordinary piece of music to listen to every day of the year. This interview will leave you changed. It will remind you of the beauty of life, even in the midst of extreme suffering. It will show you what it truly is to be human. -- You can buy Another Year of Wonder by Clemency Burton-Hill here. -- If you've been affected by any of the issues discussed in this episode, you can contact Headway, the brain injury charity, here. --- How To Fail With Elizabeth Day is hosted by Elizabeth Day, produced by Naomi Mantin and Chris Sharp. This week we are in conversation with the members of the genre defying ensemble and "classically trained garage band" Time For Three. Our host and artistic director Clemmie Burton-Hill talked to them earlier this year after being "in awe" of their interpretation and performance of J.S. Bach's Chaconne, Partita No.2 at a private Soiree at Joshua Bell's New York home. Here, Ranaan Meyer, Charles Yang, Nick Kendall, talk about improvisation, connection with the audiences, taking the freedom of moving between genres and playing hungover. And then they play that piece, their desert island companion: Bach's Chaconne – or their take on it. You can also watch their performance as part of WQXR's "Offstage" series here. "Beethoven's arms were bigger than the piano" says concert pianist Stephen Hough at his Steinway. "I sense him pushing at every moment - as if he's in a cage saying 'Let me out'". To mark the 250th anniversary of the composer's birth in 2020, Clemmie Burton-Hill looks, not at Beethoven the composer, but at a little-known aspect of the composer's life, Beethoven the entrepreneur. In the company of some of the foremost Beethoven proponents - pianist Stephen Hough, violinists Anne-Sophie Mutter and Daniel Hope and jazz trumpeter Wynton Marsalis, Clemmie investigates how Beethoven pushed and cajoled music publishers, music printers and piano makers to turn convention on its head and create a music "industry". Could he even have invented the gig economy?! Presenter: Clemmie Burton-Hill Producer: Adele Armstrong Picture Credit: REUTERS/Leon Kuegeler
