This meditation was inspired by an interview I recently heard with musician Jacob Collier. He was reflecting on the early days of YouTube, when many creators were motivated less by what they could gain and more by what they could contribute. The conversation explored the difference between creating from a spirit of generosity versus creating for likes, followers, or validation. Beneath that conversation is a deeper spiritual invitation: How does our life change when we move from a posture of contribution instead of gain? What shifts when we approach our relationships, our work, and even small everyday moments from a space of givingness? A smile shared with a stranger, a kind word, a quiet nudge to check on a friend — all of these are acts of contribution. This meditation is less about identifying specific actions to take and more about moving into the energy of generosity itself. It's an invitation to reconnect with the part of you that naturally longs to uplift, encourage, and participate in life with an open heart. Want more meditations and early access? Jacob Collier is heading on tour with his latest album, The Light For Days. It's a stark contrast to his last project, Djesse — a sprawling eight-year saga built on collaboration and voices from around the world. Now, he's stripped it all back to just Jacob and his guitar. The musical polymath joins Tom Power to talk about the album, making music alone once again, the magic of his live performances and why human connection is still at the heart of everything he does.

Jacob Collier is a rare musician: an expert in so many musical languages (western harmony, negative harmony, microtonalism) and a phenomenal communicator about music. He's something like an Ambassador for Music, traveling the world and getting thousands of people, musicians and non-musicians alike, to sing in his audience choirs. Live at On Air Fest, this conversation, catches Jacob between projects. Last year he released The Light for Days, a comparatively minimalist collection of songs written on his special five-string guitar, a quiet turn after the massive Djesse quadrilogy, which featured over 50 collaborators from Herbie Hancock to Anoushka Shankar and wove hundreds of thousands of audience choir voices into the recordings. Given that Jacob is always improvising with the best collaborators, Charlie wanted one of his own own. Five minutes before the show, Charlie spotted Sam Sanders, co-host of Vibe Check and host of the Sam Sanders Show on KCRW, and asked him onstage. Sam's a musician and one of the great interviewers, and he showed how improvising in conversation is just as essential as it is in music. Learn more about your ad choices. When I arrived in Palm Springs last month, a few days before the concert-lecture I was to play with my father, Ben Sidran, I found him surrounded by months of research notes, trying to wrestle his ideas into something coherent. The performance was part of the Palm Springs International Jazz Festival during the city's annual Modernism Week, and it grew out of an earlier program we presented at Taliesin, Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio in Spring Green, Wisconsin. What began as a playful idea about the relationship between architecture and music gradually expanded into a deeper exploration of the natural structures that shape both. Along the way we found ourselves diving into the harmonic series, overtones, Fibonacci sequence, and the physics of vibration, asking how these natural phenomena influence the way we hear rhythm, harmony, and beauty. Drawing on conversations with musicians like Gil Goldstein, Howard Levy, and Jacob Collier, the episode is part personal story, part philosophical inquiry, and part behind-the-scenes look at how creative work actually gets made. And how, in the end, even the most abstract ideas often begin the same way: with a gig. www.third-story.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story www.leosidran.substack.com/

Team Simon here! As we take a short hiatus, A Bit of Optimism will return with brand-new episodes on March 24, 2026. Until then, we're revisiting some of the conversations you loved and we still think about long after the microphones turned off. This week, we're rewinding to Simon's conversation with the wildly creative and endlessly curious Jacob Collier. To create something truly original, do we build something new or break what came before? Perhaps the answer is both—simultaneously.  Jacob Collier does exactly that. A songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and Grammy Award winner, Jacob has built a career on blending structure with spontaneity. He's known for turning entire concert halls into three-part choirs, transforming audiences from spectators into collaborators. His album "Djesse Volume 4" was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2025 Grammy Awards, alongside icons like Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, and Taylor Swift. Although Beyoncé's "Cowboy Carter" won, Jacob snagged his seventh Grammy for his rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water." Simon sat down with Jacob in a music studio just days before the 2025 Grammys, surrounded by pianos and possibility. What unfolded was more than a conversation about music. It was a masterclass in creativity, about holding opposites at once, embracing imperfection, and having the courage to follow curiosity wherever it leads. If you've ever wondered how creativity really works or how to find your own voice without losing what came before—this one's worth another listen. This… is A Bit of Optimism. --------------------------- For more on Jacob, check out:  http://jacobcollier.com   ‪@jacobcollier‬ ---------------------------

Photo by Scott Gruber on Unsplash Published 4 January 2026 e537 with Michael M and Andy – ringing in the new year with the amazing power of music to move and heal, LEGO and retro builds and a whole lot more. Andy, Michael and Michael would like to wish all of our listeners a very happy 2026! Michael M and Andy start off 2026 on a good note – or perhaps better said – a series of good notes. Michael shares some of his vacation reading, beginning with the book, I Heard There Was a Secret Chord by Daniel Levitin. In this book, Levitin highlights the power of music to move and heal, and provides a Linktree to listen to the songs featured in the book, which is included in the show notes below. One particular example from the book was the Ella Fitzgerald recording of Mack the Knife in Berlin, and the magic she created in the moment when she forgot the lyrics. Andy highlights an amazing musical creation moment with Jacob Collier's improvisation with the National Symphony Orchestra. This reminded Michael of Rosamund Stone Zander & Benjamin Zander's book, Art of Possibility, and maestro Zander's TED talk on the power of classical music. Michael also brought up David Byrne's book, How Music Works, and his learning in Puerto Rico on how dancers conduct the musicians as they perform together. Byrne discussed mixtapes in his book, and the modern equivalent of them are the playlist, which is exactly what Levitin's Linktree leads to.  Michael created a mixtape to express musically what he was trying to say in words for his NCSSM convocation speech at the start of the 2025-26 school year.  Andy shares a couple of intriguing ways to create music through retro devices and common household products – all of these are in the links below. Moving to the building part of the episode, Andy and Michael start off with LEGO, and this is about to be a banner year for the company with so many new sets coming on the market. There's a new LEGO Icons building, which has in it a music store and includes a sousaphone player minifig. The cohosts touch on the Star Trek Enterprise set which was also just launched, which includes a minifig of Commander Riker with his trombone. Andy describes the awesomeness that is the LEGO GameBoy with the inventive buttons on the device, and the team then touch on a couple of retro consoles such as the Commodore 64 reboot. The team wraps up this episode with a mention of Andy's grumpiness on the year end Tech Grumps podcast. What music has inspired you in 2025? In this episode, I sit down with vocalist, composer, and guitarist Becca Stevens for a conversation that moved me in ways I honestly wasn't expecting. We start with life right now for Becca: juggling touring, writing, teaching, and “momming” two little ones. She talks about how becoming a parent has completely reshaped her artistry, forcing a new level of efficiency, deepening her sense of purpose, and shifting her focus from serving herself to serving the song (and her kids). There's a beautiful thread here about how parenthood strips away the illusion that we are the most important thing, and how that shows up in her singing and writing. From there, we go back to the North Carolina School of the Arts, where everything really changed for her. Becca shares how she went from being the misunderstood “class clown” to finding her footing in an arts environment, discovering classical guitar almost by accident, and realizing that music alone was more than enough for a lifetime of exploration. We also talk about how jazz became her teenage rebellion, and how a wildly diverse listening palette—Bartók, Steve Reich, Joni Mitchell, Björk, and more still fuels her fearless tendency to never stay in one musical lane for long.Becca also takes us inside the creative process behind several key projects:The string quartet project with Attacca Quartet and the way those arrangements reshaped her own songsThe intimate, live-tracked world of Maple to Paper, where it had to be one guitar, one voice, and total honestyThe studio-crafted layers of Wonder Bloom, built from tiny seeds into full sonic collagesWe dig into her deep love of collaboration and what it's like to work with some truly legendary musicians, including Antonio Sánchez, Jacob Collier, Brad Mehldau, Scott Colley, and more. Becca talks about knowing when to serve someone else's vision and when to step in with her own ideas. Whether that's bringing original material to Antonio, layering vocals for Edward Simon, building a stop-motion fever dream with Jacob Collier for “Bathtub,” or stepping into Brad Mehldau's world as both a fan and a collaborator. One of the most powerful parts of this conversation centers around grief and Maple to Paper. I share how that album helped me process the loss of my dad—how it made me feel seen and validated in a way I hadn't been able to put into words. Becca opens up about losing her mom, the complicated nature of parent–child relationships, and how those songs began not as “an album” but as a survival mechanism. We talk about what it means to write from that place of raw honesty, to resist tying everything up with a pretty bow, and to allow music to carry both grief and gratitude at the same time.We close by talking about David Crosby and Becca's time in the Lighthouse Band with Michael League and Michelle Willis. Becca shares what it was like to work with him so late in his life, to feel both the shock of his passing and the sense that his voice is still very much present in her writing now. As a lifelong Crosby fan, I share my own experience of grieving someone I never met but felt incredibly connected to through his music—and how, watching those performances with the Lighthouse Band, it always looked to me like all the roads in his career led to that chapter. This is a conversation about artistry, parenthood, grief, joy, and the choice to follow authenticity over marketability—even when the “long, slow simmer” is the more challenging road. I'm so grateful Becca was willing to go this deep with me, and I can't wait for you to hear it.To stay in touch with Becca, visit her website.Music from the Episode:Be Still (Becca Stevens)Reminder (Becca Stevens & the Attaca Quartet)Cogs in Cogs, Part II - Song (Becca Stevens & Brad Mehldau)Maple to Paper (Becca Stevens)Thank you for listening. The Third Story Podcast with Leo Sidran

British singer-songwriter dodie has spent half her life in public. Long before algorithms and engagement metrics ruled the day, she began posting homemade songs and videos on YouTube as a teenager from Essex. Her soft voice, self-effacing humor, and unfiltered honesty drew millions of viewers who watched her grow up online—sharing heartbreaks, mental-health struggles, and moments of joy in real time. Fifteen years later, that same authenticity anchors her second album, Not For Lack of Trying (Decca / Verve), a project that finds her looking inward with more clarity and balance than ever. Produced with Joe Rubel, the record feels both intimate and expansive, blending hushed guitars, clarinets, and a subtle electronic pulse beneath lyrics about healing, boundaries, and learning to feel okay. Here she talks about what it means to grow up online, how she learned to protect her private life, and the long road to emotional equilibrium. She opens up about the strange feedback loop of being praised for her pain, the decision to step back from constant posting, and the discovery that medication, therapy, and time have finally helped her feel “a bit better.” She discusses the making of Not For Lack of Trying, her collaboration with friends like Greta Isaac and producer Joe Rubel, and the sonic choices that define her sound - the low rumble of drop-tuned guitars and the warmth of analog synths supporting a voice that seems to hover just above the mix. “When I'm writing,” she says, “I'm not aiming for how it sounds. I'm aiming for how it feels—I just want to get goosebumps.” Along the way, dodie reflects on the evolution from being a “special girl” with a ukulele and a webcam to becoming a full-fledged artist with more than a billion streams, seven million followers, and a place on Forbes' 30 Under 30 list. Through it all, she's still trying, still curious, still kind, still chasing that feeling. www.third-story.com www.substack.leosidran.com www.wbgo.org/podcast/the-third-story

She says, “I've never believed more in the need for people to find their own voice…” and observes the deep courage of people coming to community sings for the first time after vocal wounding. The work of Angeles Arrien inspired Barbara in her own journey, and this song pulls in the grittiness and determination needed to keep waking up. In this episode, we talk about spiritual mentorship and being formed in Jesus. We reflect on the spiritual mentors who have journeyed with us and share stories about the lessons that have shaped who we are today.  We also talk about why comparison crushes our ability to receive, our calling to make disciples of all nations, and how the daily witness of our lives is an answer to this call.   Heather's One Thing - Fix You (Live from the O2 Arena) by Jacob Collier and Chris Martin Sister Miriam's One Thing - Dr. Christin McIntyre on the Restore the Glory Podcast and her lectures on Thomistic Psychology (Part 1) (Part 2) Michelle's One Thing - Dr. Mary Lou and Chris O'Grady and letting us use their beach home   Announcement: Join us for our Lenten Study beginning March 5th, 2025 as we journey through “Jesus and the Jubilee: The Biblical Roots of the Year of God's Favor“ by Dr. John Bergsma. We look forward to sitting at the feet of a leading scholar as we unpack what the Lord has in store for us in the year of Jubilee. How have I failed to acknowledge the humanity of my mentors? What intentional “yeses” can I give to mentoring or being mentored in this season?   Discussion Questions: What were the practical ways that you were able to receive mentorship in your life? What parts of the Face of God did my mentors reveal to me despite their own brokenness? How have your peers mentored you in different seasons? Who can you help discover & release their gifts to the world?   Quote to Ponder: “Modern man listens more willingly to witnesses than to teachers, and if he listens to teachers, it is because they are witnesses.”  (Pope Paul VI, On Evangelization in the Modern World)   Scripture for Lectio: “How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” (Romans 10:14-15)   Sponsor - Hallow: This episode is sponsored by Hallow, the #1 prayer app in the world with over 10,000 prayers, meditations, and music to help you find peace and grow closer to God. Hallow's annual Pray40 challenge for Lent is a powerful way to dive deeper into the three pillars of Lent: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. This year's Pray40 is called The Way and focuses on the writings of St. Josemaría Escrivá and the story of Servant of God Takashi Nagai. You can join Sr. Miriam as well as other Christian voices like Jonathan Roumie, Fr. Mike Schmitz, Mark Wahlberg, actor Chris Pratt, and more for this 40-day journey to the cross. As we meditate on the lives of those who follow Christ, we'll see that despite the noise and distraction of today, Jesus died on the cross so that we might know His love and, ultimately, eternal life. To create something truly original, do we build something new or break what came before? Perhaps the answer is both—simultaneously.Jacob Collier does exactly that. A brilliant songwriter and musician, he's known for transforming his live audiences into massive three-part choirs, making music with the very people who attend his concerts. His album Djesse Volume 4 was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2025 Grammy Awards, alongside icons like Beyoncé, Billie Eilish, and Taylor Swift. Although Beyoncé's Cowboy Carter won, Jacob snagged his seventh Grammy for his rendition of "Bridge Over Troubled Water."I sat down with him in a music studio a few days before the Grammys, surrounded by multiple pianos, and it was a joy to hear him play. Jacob's approach to music—blending structure with spontaneity—offers insights into creativity that are as inspiring as his sound. This…is A Bit of Optimism. For more on Jacob, check out:jacobcollier.com

In 2013, after having posted a series of videos recorded in his family home in North London of himself singing a cappella arrangements of classic - yet sometimes obscure - songs on YouTube, a critical mass began to form around Jacob Collier.  His videos of Stevie Wonder's “Isn't She Lovely” and “Don't You Worry Bout A Thing” were passed around by musicians and music enthusiasts and by 2014 he was being managed by Quincy Jones and traveling around the world. He was one of the first career artists to emerge on YouTube. Jacob's journey since then has been nothing short of extraordinary. Today, at 30 years old, with six Grammys, millions of fans, and collaborations ranging from Herbie Hancock to Chris Martin, his influence spans generations. His Djesse project—four albums in six years, exploring 50 songs and countless collaborations —represents not just his creativity but his ability to bring others into his world. From arenas to intimate collaborations, Jacob Collier is now a fact of musical life. Yet, he remains tied to his roots: the small room in his mother's house where it all began. His first album, In My Room, was both a tribute to that space and a manifesto for his artistic philosophy. Before his star had really begun to rise, I met with Collier in late 2014. He invited me to his family home in North London, where his mother greeted me with tea and cookies while he returned from university. When we finally sat down in his music room to talk, his brilliance was immediately apparent. He spoke about sound with sensitivity and clarity, blending perfect pitch, synesthesia, and a boundless curiosity. He was still a kid, but one with an expansive vision. That conversation remains a revelation. It captured a young artist at the cusp of greatness. It is also the first interview of its kind that exists with the extraordinary artist . Ten years after that first interview, I'm reminded why I started this podcast: to capture history as it's being made. Jacob Collier's story is one of boundless curiosity and connection—a message in a bottle that changed the tide.
