From Cuba, Dafnis Prieto's revolutionary drumming techniques and compositions have had a powerful impact on the music landscape, nationally and internationally. His various awards and honors include a MacArthur “Genius” Fellowship, a GRAMMY Award for Back to the Sunset (2018), two additional GRAMMY nominations, two Latin GRAMMY nominations (including Best New Artist in 2007), and the Jazz Journalists Association's Up & Coming Musician of the Year in 2006. As a composer, Prieto has created music for dance, film, chamber ensembles, and most notably for his own bands, ranging from duets to big bands. He has received commissions, grants, and fellowships from Chamber Music America, Princeton University, Jazz at Lincoln Center, MoMA, Whitney Museum of American Art, National Association of Latino Arts and Cultures, Jerome Foundation, East Carolina University, Painted Bride Art Center, Meet The Composer, WNYC, New Music USA, Hazard Productions, and Metropole Orkest, among others. Prieto has performed at many national and international music festivals as a bandleader. Since his 1999 arrival in New York, he has also worked in bands led by Michel Camilo, Chucho and Bebo Valdés, Henry Threadgill, Steve Coleman, Eddie Palmieri, Chico and Arturo O'Farrill, Dave Samuels and the Caribbean Jazz Project, Jane Bunnett, D.D. Jackson, Edward Simon, Roy Hargrove, Don Byron, and Andrew Hill, among others. Also a gifted educator, Prieto has conducted numerous master classes, clinics, and workshops around the world. He was on the jazz studies faculty at New York University from 2005 to 2014, and in 2015 joined the faculty of the University of Miami's Frost School of Music. In 2016, Prieto published the groundbreaking analytical and instructional drum book, A World of Rhythmic Possibilities. In 2020, he published Rhythmic Synchronicity, a book for non-drummers inspired by a course of the same name that Prieto developed at the Frost School of Music. In 2025 he released the book "WHAT ARE THE ODDS" the third book in his catalog, and it shows not only his passion for rhythm and drumming but furthermore his commitment to music education at large. This one takes you to a fascinating journey of rhythms and meters. The book features 519 examples, and each of them comes with an audio track and a video clip. He is the founder of the independent music company Dafnison Music, established in 2008. This is the WORLD PREMIERE of “THE RICH ONES ALL STARS”, the new extended version of my recent single, “The Rich Ones”. The new version features me and my band, Project Grand Slam, along with 8 World Class musicians who previously have been guests on this podcast. Here's the back story.A few months ago I released a single, “The Rich Ones”, featuring Randy Brecker of Blood Sweat & Tears fame on flugelhorn. The single was very popular, and I decided to do something a bit daring and different. I've had many World Class musicians as guests on the podcast. So I asked several of them if they would record a new solo for the track and I would release a new, extended version of the tune. John contributed a fantastic sax solo to the piece.PAT COIL is an acclaimed jazz pianist who has performed with Michael McDonald, Carmen McRae and many others. He added a sublime piano solo.PETER TIEHUIS is the heralded Dutch guitarist who performs with the Metropole Orkest. He contributed a wonderful guitar solo.ANTONIO FARAO is the extraordinary Italian jazz keyboard player who has performed with Joe Lovano and Jack DeJohnette among others. Antonio contributed a smokin' Fender Rhodes keyboard solo.ELLIOTT RANDALL is the incredible guitarist who gave the world the unforgettable solo on Steely Dan's “Reelin' In The Years”. Today, we speak with Ron van Leeuwen, who straddles two creative worlds. By day, he is an architect and urban designer, shaping physical spaces. By night, he transforms his creative energy into music, composing pieces that the 55-piece Metropole Orkest has recorded. His newest composition, Architones, is also available on Spotify. We discuss the relations and differences between working in these two fields, the metamorphoses of buildings and music, and the challenges of delivering a feasible building. During our discussion, Ron generously shares his compositional insights and the creative process behind his homage to the Vredespalais (Peace Palace) in The Hague. He reveals how he began with a waltz rhythm, a choice that adds a unique musical dimension to the architectural masterpiece. Við kynntum okkur Fjölmenningardeigluna á vegum Þjóðminjasafnsins í þættinum dag. Þjóðminjasafnið hóf að safna upp úr 1960 upplýsingum um siði og venjur, hátíðisdaga og daglegt líf í íslensku samfélagi, en í þetta sinn beina þau sjónum að pólskum rótum og daglegu lífi á Íslandi. Safnið óskar eftir frásögnum fólks af pólskum uppruna af íslensku samfélagi, en markmiðið er að safna upplýsingum um upplifun einstaklinga innan pólska samfélagsins á Íslandi af veru þeirra hér á landi. Helga Vollertsen, sérfræðingur þjóðhátta hjá Þjóðminjasafninu kom í þáttinn og sagði okkur betur frá þessu. Jón Yngvi Jóhannsson, bókmenntafræðingur og dósent við Menntavísindasvið Háskóla Íslands, kom til okkar í dag en hann mun gera upp jólabókaflóðið fyrir síðustu jól á bókasafni Kópavogs, nokkuð sem hann hefur gert í mörg ár víða um land. Jón Yngvi kom í þáttinn. Við fengum svo póstkort frá Magnúsi R. Einarssyni í dag. Póskortið barst að þessu sinni alla leið frá Cabo Verde, eða Grænhöfðaeyjum. Magnús sagði líka frá fyrstu ferð sinni til Portúgal en þar koma við sögu Biskupstungur, Hong Kong, og Evrópukeppnin í fótbolta meðal annars. Núna er hann a Cabo Verde og sagði frá upplifun sinni á þessum sérkennilegu eyjum sem eiga sér dramatíska sögu. You don't change your sound based on what is in vogue in the music world. Be true to yourself. Be the best version of yourself and don't try to be a second-rate version of anyone else."Christopher Tin is a two-time Grammy-winning composer of concert and media music. His music has been performed and premiered in many of the world's most prestigious venues: Lincoln Center, Kennedy Center, Hollywood Bowl, the United Nations, and Carnegie Hall, where he had an entire concert devoted to his music. He has also been performed by ensembles diverse as the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, National Symphony Orchestra, Metropole Orkest, and US Air Force Band.His song "Baba Yetu", originally written for the video game Civilization IV, is a modern choral standard, and the first piece of music written for a video game ever to win a Grammy Award. His debut album, the multi-lingual song cycle Calling All Dawns, won him a second Grammy in 2011 for Best Classical Crossover Album, and his follow-up release The Drop That Contained the Sea debuted at #1 on Billboard's classical charts, and premiered to a sold-out audience at Carnegie Hall's Stern Auditorium. His third album To Shiver the Sky also debuted at #1, and was funded by a record-breaking Kickstarter campaign that raised $221,415, smashing all previous classical music crowdfunding records. His fourth album, The Lost Birds, is a collaboration with acclaimed British vocal ensemble VOCES8 and was nominated for a Grammy Award in 2023.Tin is signed to an exclusive record deal with Universal under their legendary Decca label, published by Concord and Boosey & Hawkes, and is a Yamaha artist. Louis Cole is a singer-songwriter and sickeningly talented multi-instrumentalist with a strong DIY aesthetic from Los Angeles, California. He is on a mission to create deep feelings through music and is the figurehead of an LA jazz-adjacent scene that includes Genevieve Artadi (with whom Cole co-founded the alt pop / electrofunk band KNOWER in 2009), Sam Gendel, Sam Wilkes, Jacob Mann, Dennis Hamm, Pedro Martins and more. Martin Fondse is pianist, componist en dirigent. Van 2021 tot 2023 is hij Componist des Vaderlands. Op de Dag van de Componist (18 juni) begeleidt hij de speciaal gecomponeerde Grootste Grafische Partituur Aller Tijden, dat op de straten van Utrecht gespeeld wordt door kinderen, musici en voorbijgangers. Op 26 juni gaat de compositie All Together Now in premiere, dat Fondse schreef voor alle muzikanten in Nederland. Eerder componeerde hij voor onder anderen Gregory Porter en het Metropole Orkest. In 2017 ontving hij de Buma Boy Edgar Prijs voor zijn bijdrage aan de Nederlandse jazz- en muziekscene.    Pieter van der Wielen gaat met Martin Fondse in gesprek.

On August 24th 2017 Leo Pelligrino appeared as a guest soloist with the Metropole Orkest at the BBC Proms. He played a solo intro to the Charles Mingus tune Moanin' and the YouTube video of that performance has been viewed millions of times.
