Comparison, Competition, and What We Get Wrong About Both

I woke up thinking about the Latin root of "com" which sent me down a rabbit hole -- turns out, these used to be quite positive words back in the day.The words "comparison" and "competition" had a whole different meaning before capitalism and industrialization took over (shocking!) and in this ep, I'm exploring how we can get back to its original roots: "to make equal with" and "to strive together". Come with me as I make comparisons to modern day media powerhouses like Alex Cooper, how the Threads ick comes back around every season, the skill gap hamster wheel and more.I end with "The Parable of the Mexican Fisherman" which I think should be required reading for all entrepreneurs. This is for anyone in a comparison spiral, feeling exhausted by "competing" to scale, and who want to do business differently. Connect with Chelsea:Get on the Ultimate Pitch Kit waitlist

Today on Astronomy Daily: Japan's Hayabusa2 pulls off a nail-biting high-speed asteroid flyby, James Webb finds the same unexplained chemical mystery on Titan AND Pluto, a neutrino detector may have caught the universe's oldest supernova echo, a wild new theory tries to solve the black hole information paradox, we wrap up the weekend's aurora action, and we look at when NASA's New Horizons might finally cross into interstellar space.Monday, July 6, 2026 1. Hayabusa2's Flyby of Asteroid Torifune •        JAXA's Hayabusa2 spacecraft flew within ~800 metres of near-Earth asteroid (98943) Torifune on July 5, 2026, at a relative speed of about 5.25 km/s (~18,000 km/h). •        This is an extended-mission flyby, not a sample return — Hayabusa2 already delivered Ryugu samples to Earth in December 2020. •        Purpose: engineering demonstration of high-precision navigation relevant to planetary defense (asteroid deflection technology). •        Torifune is roughly 450 metres across. Next stop for Hayabusa2: rendezvous with asteroid 1998 KY26 in 2031. •        Source: JAXA/ISAS, Nikkei Asia, phys.org (July 5, 2026). 2. Mystery Molecule Found on Both Titan and Pluto •        James Webb Space Telescope data reveals an unexplained absorption feature at ~5.11 micrometres on the surfaces of Titan (Saturn's largest moon) and Pluto. •        Evidence points to a surface origin rather than atmospheric origin, based on limb-vs-disc-center comparison on Titan. •        Candidate compounds include allenes, but no confirmed identification yet. •        Pluto's absorption line is roughly three times broader than Titan's at the same central wavelength. •        Study led by Dr. Bruno Bézard's team (Paris Observatory); posted to arXiv June 11, 2026 — not yet peer-reviewed. 3. Super-Kamiokande's Hint of the Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background •        Super-Kamiokande collaboration presented results at Neutrino 2026 (UC Irvine) after analyzing ~5,000 days of data. •        Found a statistically significant excess of events between 13.3–81.3 MeV — consistent with the long-predicted Diffuse Supernova Neutrino Background (DSNB). •        Significance: 2.6-sigma (~99.5% confidence) — below the 5-sigma discovery threshold, so described as an 'indication,' not a confirmed detection. •        If confirmed, DSNB would offer a new way to study the cosmic history of core-collapse supernovae via neutrinos rather than light. 4. A Theoretical Fix for the Black Hole Information Paradox •        New theoretical study proposes black holes stop evaporating just before vanishing completely, leaving a stable Planck-scale remnant (~9×10⁻⁴¹ kg). •        Mechanism: a repulsive force from spacetime torsion in a 7-dimensional Einstein-Cartan model, active at extreme (Planckian) densities. •        Proposal: quantum information is preserved via long-lived 'vibrations' in the remnant's internal torsion field. •        This is a theoretical/mathematical proposal, not an observational result. Researchers: Pinčák, Pigazzini, Pudlák, Bartoš. 5. Weekend Geomagnetic Storm / Aurora Wrap-Up •        X1.1 solar flare (June 30) and associated CME triggered a G3 (strong) geomagnetic storm around July 3–4, 2026. •        Aurora borealis visible as far south as Utah, Colorado, and Nevada in the continental US. •        NOAA SWPC reports conditions easing to unsettled/G1 levels through July 6 as CME effects wane. 6. Forecasting New Horizons' Crossing Into Interstellar Space •        SwRI researchers (lead: Dr. Jonathan Gasser) combined solar wind forecasting with heliosphere models to predict New Horizons' termination shock crossing. •        Forecast window: 2029–2040, with possible multiple crossings as the heliosphere expands/contracts with the solar cycle. •        New Horizons is currently ~66 AU from the Sun. Voyager 2 crossed its termination shock at 84 AU in 2007, with a 46% solar wind speed drop. •        New Horizons would become only the third spacecraft (after Voyager 1 and 2) to cross this boundary. •        Two papers: Advances in Space Research and The Astrophysical Journal (SwRI, 2026).Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/astronomy-daily-the-latest-space-news--5648921/support.Sponsor Details:Ensure your online privacy by using NordVPN. Send us Fan MailEpisode 48: Artificial Intelligence, Real Inspiration, & Zero Personal SpaceJoin Rob Riv, Frank Donati, Justin Ryan, and Steve Santucci for another unpredictable episode of the Modeling Insanity Podcast as they dive into a wide-ranging discussion on the growing role of artificial intelligence in the hobby. From AI-enhanced photos and generated artwork to the impact AI may have on how modelers share and present their work, the crew offers their thoughts, opinions, and plenty of spirited debate along the way.The conversation then shifts to a more personal topic: what inspires them to build. Whether it's box art, historical subjects, reference photos, museum visits, movies, books, or the work of fellow modelers, each host shares what fuels their passion for the hobby and keeps them coming back to the workbench.Of course, no episode would be complete without a classic Rob Riv Life Lesson Rant™. This time, Rob tackles one of society's greatest unsolved mysteries: why some people feel the need to stand six inches behind you in stores, checkout lines, and hobby shops. Equal parts observation, frustration, and comedy, it's the kind of rant that only Rob can deliver. So grab a drink, pull up a chair, and join the insanity. There are laughs, opinions, hobby talk, and more than a few questionable life lessons. “I feel closer to my sister Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes now because it's a different type of connection” ~ Reigndrop Lopes  In this new episode of Skipping Class presented by The Progress Report, Lalaa Shepard sits down with Reigndrop Lopes, the younger sister of TLC legend Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, for an emotional and insightful conversation about family, music, healing, and preserving one of music's most iconic legacies. During the interview, Reigndrop reflects on growing up alongside Left Eye and shares some of her favorite memories of her big sister while opening up about the deep spiritual connection she still feels with her today. She also discusses Left Eye's love for rap music, her own love for rock music growing up, and how those influences helped shape their creativity and individuality over the years. The conversation arrives just after Left Eye's 55th heavenly birthday on May 27th and also highlights Reigndrop's upcoming Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes birthday celebration and fundraiser event in Atlanta focused on healing, wellness, creativity, fashion, and community connection. Reigndrop also speaks on her current relationship with Chilli and T-Boz of TLC, explains why she still was not a fan of the TLC biopic, and reveals plans for her own future project centered around telling Left Eye's story properly. In the episode, Reigndrop confirms that she plans to release Left Eye's long-awaited album “Supernova” to streaming platforms. She also revisits memories of traveling to Honduras with her sister, reflects on Dr. Sebi, and opens up about recently returning to Honduras for the first time in over 20 years since Left Eye's passing. Episode: S05E112 — Tuesday, 26 May 2026 Hosts: Anna & Avery Network: Bitesz.com Podcast Network Website: astronomydaily.io  |  Social: @AstroDailyPod   Story Summaries 1. NASA Unveils Ambitious Moon Base Plan As this episode was recorded, NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman was preparing to announce a landmark plan for a permanent human outpost at the lunar south pole by 2036. The programme carries a price tag of approximately $30 billion across a seven-year foundational phase, relies on nuclear power systems, leverages lunar water ice for fuel and life support, and effectively retires the Gateway orbital station concept. Commercial partners will supply rovers and habitat modules. Phase one targets around two dozen lunar launches, including Artemis IV, by 2028. Full details will be covered in tomorrow's episode. 2. Starship V3 Flight 12 — Engine Drama, Historic Debut SpaceX launched the first Starship V3 rocket on Friday, 22 May 2026, from brand-new Pad 2 at Starbase, Texas. Ship 39 reached space and completed a controlled splashdown in the Indian Ocean despite losing one of its six vacuum Raptor engines during ascent. The flight computer compensated by extending burns on the remaining five. The Super Heavy booster was lost in the Gulf of Mexico after a failed boostback burn. The FAA has opened a review. SpaceX declared most pre-planned test objectives met. 3. JWST Maps First Daily Weather Cycle on a Distant World Published in Science on 21 May 2026. Researchers from Johns Hopkins and Arizona State Universities used Webb's NIRISS instrument to observe WASP-94Ab — a hot Jupiter 690 light-years away — and detected the first daily cloud cycle ever recorded on another planet. Thick magnesium silicate clouds form each morning, then completely clear by evening. The finding also corrected a decade of skewed atmospheric composition data. 4. NASA's Fermi Telescope Solves 20-Year Supernova Mystery An international team led by Fabio Acero used NASA's Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope to confirm the first definitive gamma-ray detection from a superluminous supernova — SN 2017egm. The data confirms a newly formed magnetar as the power source behind these extraordinarily bright explosions. Published in Astronomy & Astrophysics, 2026. 5. Most Rocky Exoplanets May Lack Earth-Like Metallic Cores A new paper submitted to the Astrophysical Journal challenges the long-held assumption that dense metallic cores are standard features of rocky planets. Researchers argue that most rocky exoplanets may have formed without Earth-style metallic cores — meaning no global magnetic field, with significant implications for atmospheric retention and habitability. 6. The Soviet Rover That Went Silent — and Came Back Lunokhod 1 was the world's first remote-controlled rover on another world (1970). After traversing 10.5 km of Mare Imbrium, contact was lost in 1971. For nearly 40 years its exact position was unknown — until NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter identified it in 2010. The APOLLO project then fired laser pulses and received ~2,000 photons back from its French-built retroreflector — four times stronger than expected. It remains an active contributor to lunar science today.   Sources & Further Reading •       NASA Moon Base announcement: nasa.gov/2026-news-releases •       Starship Flight 12 updates: space.com •       WASP-94Ab paper: Science, 21 May 2026 — DOI via Johns Hopkins Hub •       Fermi supernova paper: Astronomy & Astrophysics, 2026 — DOI: 10.1051/0004-6361/202558547 •       Exoplanet cores paper: submitted to Astrophysical Journal, May 2026Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/astronomy-daily-space-news-updates--5648921/support.Sponsor Details:Ensure your online privacy by using NordVPN. Supernova is both a fanciful and autobiographical tale, based upon Liza's real experience losing multiple family members to suicide and cancer. Expressed through her playing multiple characters, various genres of musical numbers (including but not limited to country, pop, R & B, and funk), and humor that perfectly juxtaposes the seriousness of the poignant thematic elements. The show's heroine shares the same name as the actress who plays her. However, in this dimension Liza belongs to a family of superheroes tasked with the very large feat of saving the world. Unlike the rest of the members of her family, at the top of the show, Liza is the only member who doesn't have any superpowers yet. She's merely equipped with a positive attitude and an uncanny ability to find joy in even the smallest things and darkest moments. With no cure or anecdote in sight, the family's mission is to discover the causes of an “emotional pandemic” sweeping the globe that results in people losing their will to live and “self-destructing”. The family's adventure of saving the world is intrinsically linked with Liza's personal journey of self-acceptance and becoming who she truly is. On March 1st, Liza got the all too familiar call that another brother had died by suicide. Of her four brothers, three of them have taken their lives; joined in death by their mother and stepmother, who both passed away of differing cancers 15 years apart. Seemingly compelled by something greater than herself, Liza could no longer keep silent about her intimate experiences with death, grief, trauma, and mental health. Within months, a series of events, people, and opportunities serendipitously unfolded resulting in a one woman mental health musical comedy. What began as a small whisper of a desire to share her family's story and possibly impact the taboo nature with which suicide and emotional well-being are currently regarded in society, quickly snowballed into a much bigger conversation about happiness, spirituality, and one's ability to withstand the uncontrollable and unfair, but inherent, challenges of life. The show closes with a finale song that perfectly encapsulates the theme and message of the musical: What makes life worth living? Do more of THAT! Before noon, he was back in Tel Aviv — alive, with five friends and a roll of film of people he might never see again.A Canadian-Israeli photographer who'd never owned a Hillel sweatshirt or set foot on a Birthright trip, Shai walked out of that field and walked straight into 200 speaking engagements, years of therapy, and one of the most clear-eyed accounts of Nova & what resilience actually looks like. This conversation goes where most October 7th coverage won't: the bureaucratic nightmare of qualifying for Israeli government aid, the survivors who can't return to their old jobs, and the Band-Aid pizza parties masquerading as mental health support. It's hard not to feel that way when we're fire-hosed with atrocity at the top of every hour.I can't help but wonder: is the world actually ending, or are we just chronically overexposed to doom with no alternative vision to reach for?In this solo episode, I explore my own doom-and-gloom mode that sent me into AI psychosis, how I climbed out of the dark hole, and started to realize the power of imagination, relationships, art, creativity, and prioritizing seeking joy.If you've felt hopeless, numb, or paralyzed by fear, I hope this episode stirs something within you to ignite a new future. We need your creative thinking now more than ever.Questions to sit with:What inputs are you going reduce this week or intentionally change? What's something super imaginative and forward thinking and non-apocalyptic that you could start putting out in the world? What brings you joy and how can you top up on it this week?DM me @chelseariffe with your reflections ❤️‍
