Neil 'Sam' Samworth spent 11 years as a prison officer at HMP Manchester - better known as Strangeways, one of Britain's most notorious jails. Building rapport with the men incarcerated there, he prided himself on de-escalating violent and threatening situations; an approach becoming increasingly impossible as the prison service churns through staff. In this interview with Olly, he confronts corruption; considers the toll his job took on his mental and physical health; and explains why, in his view, officer training is inadequate for purpose… Neil's books, ‘Strangeways: A Prison Officer's Story' and ‘Strangeways Unlocked' are out now. His video series, ‘Real Porridge with Sam Samworth' is on YouTube. — Meanwhile, in the Zeitgeist, Ollie Peart tries his hand at white labelling and drop-shipping. Using Chinese wholesalers Taobao and AliExpress, can he stumble upon the next big consumer sensation? How do Western brands ‘add value', ensure decent customer service and client satisfaction when they're flogging goods they've never even SEEN? If you run a small business making stuff… we'd love to hear from you for our Christmas Collab! Drop us a line using the Feedback form. — Elsewhere, in the Foxhole, Alix Fox runs through Plenty of Fish's dating trends for 2023, from ‘bae realing' to ‘eco-dumping' - is it time for online courtship to enter a ‘sincerer era'? Plus, it's No-Nut November; when members of the NoFap movement encourage one another to abstain from masturbation for an entire month… Are there any health benefits to taking part? Does the original study that kicked off the NoFap movement bare scrutiny? Alix dives deep into the manosphere to discover more. — Finally, our record of the month is the Jungle-produced single from Poppy Ajudha - the turbo-charged and rebellious ‘NO!' (It isn't about No-Nut November, apparently). — This episode is sponsored by: • Wine52, the wine discovery club that sends delicious wine to your door from a different country each month. Poppy Ajudha - MOTHERS SISTERS GIRLFRIENDS - from the 2022 self-released album THE POWER IN US On her debut album The Power In Us, Poppy Ajudha displays just that: a fearless force-of-nature, with songs about feminism, colonialism, gender politics, mental health, and other social issues on her mind. Today's Song of the Day, in particular, is a call to action for women's rights.  "Women don't have to be just what they are taught to be," she emphasizes, via a press release. "There is so much more to us than Mothers, Sisters, Daughters, Girlfriends and our relation to men. I want men to engage more heavily in feminism and really see how their defiance against it only holds both women and men back. There are so many boxes we put ourselves in; I want us all to break out of them." The South London-born artist adds, "Every song on this album touches on these issues because they are all I think about everyday, all I see around me in my friends and my family. I hope it flips a switch in your mind, like it did for mine.”  Read the full post on KEXP.org Support the show: https://www.kexp.org/donate See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

New Talk Art! We meet leading artist Sonia Boyce. Boyce's practice is fundamentally collaborative and inclusive, fostering a participatory approach that questions artistic authorship and cultural difference. Last month, she became the first Black female artist to represent Britain at the Venice Biennale, the world's oldest international art exhibition. The work she presented in the British Pavilion won the prestigious prize, the Golden Lion. Six years before, she had been the first Black British woman to get elected to the Royal Academy of Arts. The British Council presents Feeling Her Way by Sonia Boyce at the British Pavilion for La Biennale di Venezia, running from 23 April – 27 November 2022. Boyce's powerful exhibition explores the potential of collaborative play as a route to innovation. The installation brings together video works featuring five Black* female musicians (Poppy Ajudha, Jacqui Dankworth MBE, Sofia Jernberg, Tanita Tikaram and composer Errollyn Wallen CBE) who were invited to improvise, interact and play with their voices. The video works take centre stage among Boyce's signature tessellating wallpapers and golden geometric structures, and the Pavilion's rooms are filled with sounds – sometimes harmonious, sometimes clashing – embodying feelings of freedom, power and vulnerability. This new commission expands on Boyce's Devotional Collection, built over more than two decades and spanning more than three centuries, which honours the substantial contribution of Black British female musicians to transnational culture.Artist and academic Sonia Boyce OBE RA (b. London, 1962) came to prominence in the early 1980s as a key figure in the burgeoning Black Arts Movement of that time with figurative pastel drawings and photo collages that addressed issues of race and gender in Britain. In 1987, she became one of the youngest artists of her generation to have her artwork acquired by Tate and the first Black-British female artist to enter the collection. Since the 1990s Boyce's practice has taken a significant multi-media and improvisational turn by bringing people together in a dynamic, social practice that encourages others to speak, sing or move in relation to the past and the present. Incorporating film, photography, print and sound in multi-media installations, Boyce's practice is fundamentally collaborative and inclusive, fostering a participatory approach that questions artistic authorship and cultural difference. At the heart of her work are questions about the production and reception of unexpected gestures, with an underlying interest in the intersection of personal and political subjectivities.Follow @SoniaBoyceArtist and @SimonLeeGallery. Writer Jack Barth came closer than most - scripting an episode of The Simpsons, and attracting the attention of Lord Puttnam at Columbia Pictures.

Guest presenter Jules Buckley stands in for Clemmie Burton-Hill in a new series of Classical Fix, mixing bespoke classical playlists for music-loving guests. This week, Jules is joined by Poppy Ajudha, a singer and musician who meshes jazz and R’n’B with soul and electronic music, and counts Barack Obama as a fan of her music. Poppy Ajudha's playlist: Aaron Copland - Clarinet Concerto (1st movement) Patrick Watson - Hommage Nadia Boulanger - 3 pieces for cello and piano (No. 2) Jean Barriere - Sonata for Two Cellos Igor Stravinsky - Symphony of Psalms (3rd movement) Anna Meredith - Nautilus Classical Fix is a podcast aimed at opening up the world of classical music to anyone who fancies giving it a go. Jules Buckley is a Grammy-winning conductor, arranger and composer who pushes the boundaries of almost all musical genres by placing them in an orchestral context, and has earned himself a reputation as a 'pioneering genre alchemist' and' agitator of musical convention'. He leads two of the world’s most versatile and in-demand orchestras - the Heritage Orchestra and the Metropole Orkest - and over the past nine years he has been responsible for some of the most groundbreaking BBC Proms, including the Ibiza Prom, 1Xtra's Grime Symphony, The Songs of Scott Walker, Jacob Collier and Friends, and tributes to Quincy Jones, Nina Simone and Charles Mingus. In 2019, Jules joined the BBC Symphony Orchestra as Creative Artist in Association.
