The Strokes… Music’s coolest ‘The’ Band of the early 21st century. Along with Sweden’s The Hives, Australia’s The Vines, and Detroit’s The White Stripes - The Strokes almost certainly had no intention of getting looped into the phenomenon of wispy haired indie rock bands that all seemed to break out between the summers of 2001 and 2002; because - if we’re being honest - they didn’t exactly have what you might call an indie origin story. Formed in New York City in as early as 1997 by Frontman Julian Casablancas, Guitarist Nick Valensi and Drummer Fabrizio Moretti at the illustrious Dwight Private School (which lists Truman Capote and Paris Hilton as Alumni) the trio would quickly recruit friend Nikolai Fraiture to play bass with them, as well as Guitarist Albert Hammond Jr. in ‘98. Hammond Jr. had just relocated to New York from Los Angeles by way of Switzerland, where he was childhood friends with Julian Casablancas - at - you guessed it - an even more illustrious Private Boarding School. Within less than 3 years, The Strokes would completely re-define what it would mean to be a trendy modern rock band - and they did it mostly on the back of this hit single; This is the story of The Strokes Last Nite, with newly unearthed audio from the band!

What an incredible joy it was to spend some time talking face to face with one of my all-time favorite artists — Julian Casablancas of The Voidz and The Strokes — for episode 113 of the LSQ podcast. We met up for this interview backstage at LA's Orpheum Theater just after The Voidz played a mind-blowing set, including music from their awesome new album, Like All Before You. Although we're old friends and have done more than a few interviews over the years, this conversation allowed us to touch on subjects we'd never reached in the past. In addition to talking about both of his bands and how their goals have evolved, we discuss Julian's own development as a songwriter and musician, starting with his teenage years learning to play songs by Nirvana and Green Day on guitar as a springboard for writing his own tunes, how he gained the confidence to begin sharing his music with friends (at one point pretending that his own composition was a Rancid tune, just to see what people thought of it), and how long it took before he finally felt like his writing was on the right track (turns out it wasn't until the Strokes song “Soma,” during the bands early days). He also shares about his songwriting practice (sometimes they come to him in dreams) and about the moments when he feels most inspired by the creative process. And more! Keep up with The Voidz here!

Written with help by ChatGPT:In the fourth installment of our retrospective podcast series on The Strokes, we shift our focus to the side project of their  frontman, Julian Casablancas – The Voidz. In this episode, we delve into the experimental sounds of The Voidz, exploring their two  albums, "Tyranny" and "Virtue." "Tyranny," the band's debut release, takes us on a through a cacophony of genres, blending elements of punk, new wave, and psychedelic rock. Casablancas and The Voidz challenge conventional musical norms, delivering a raw and unfiltered experience. As we transition to their sophomore effort, "Virtue," the record is more conventional and politically influenced. Yet Casablancas returns to the instinct of writing meandering songs about meandering feelings. Join Greg, Tyler, and me as we dissect the sonic landscapes crafted by The Voidz, analyzing the evolution of their sound and the impact of these albums on the broader alternative music scene. From the gritty experimentation of "Tyranny" to the polished eclecticism of "Virtue," our discussion aims to unravel the intricacies of The Voidz's discography, shedding light on the unique artistic expression brought forth by Julian Casablancas and his musical collaborators.

Scott sits with The Strokes' own Albert Hammond Jr., following the recent release of the guitarist's latest solo album, Melodies on Hiatus. The California-born musician and son of “It Never Rains in Southern California” singer Albert Hammond was one of the first-ever guests on Lipps Service back in 2018. In his second appearance, he talked with Scott about The Strokes' latest tour for its album The New Abnormal, hanging out with Anthony Kiedis, and what it's like living in LA. The two also got into Hammond Jr.'s upbringing and getting into music at a young age, meeting and working with The Cars' Ric Ocasek, and the whole story of him joining The Strokes, including meeting Julian Casablancas in NY and having almost instant chemistry with him. They reflect on The Strokes' 25-plus-year-long career, working with Rick Rubin and other producers, touring, the making of his solo albums, Melodies on Hiatus, and much more. Tune into an insightful and rockin' episode with the one and only, Albert Hammond Jr.

Through soaring harmonies and a driving rhythm section, the band has honed a magnetic sound that is a testament to the healing power and catharsis of community. Following their warmly-received debut album 'I Could Cry Right Now If You Wanted Me To,' the band released two singles in Spring 2022, weaved together during the pandemic and bringing to life the memories – from terrible parties to secret make-out spots – that bubble to the surface when the world has been forced to a halt. ✨ KEEP UP TO DATE WITH RAZOR BRAIDS ✨Tour Tickets: https://www.razorbraids.com/tourWeb: https://www.razorbraids.com/homeInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/razorbraids/Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/razorbraids/Twitter: https://twitter.com/RazorBraidsTikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@razorbraids✨ CONNECT WITH IZZY ✨YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCv6SBgiYCpYbx9BOYNefkIgWebsite: https://agrrrlstwosoundcents.comInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/agrrrlstwosoundcents/Twitter: https://twitter.com/grrrlsoundcents

We had the pleasure of interviewing renforshort over Zoom video.renforshort releases her anxiously awaited debut album, dear amelia, today via Interscope Records. With dear amelia renforshort joins forces with her longtime collaborator Jeff Hazin as well as producers/co-writers like David Pramik, Alexander 23, Andy Seltzer, John Ryan, Tia Scola, Nick Long and Y2K, and narrates an up-close and thrillingly honest journey through the darkest parts of her psyche. A near-lifelong musician who plays guitar, piano, and drums and started touring before she'd graduated high school, the Toronto-bred artist builds an elaborate sonic world around her detailed exploration of mental health, ultimately bringing even the most painful revelations to strangely radiant life. Tackling raw accounts of depression and disassociation, anxiety and self-erasure renforshort crystallized the concept for her full-length debut after creating its spellbinding final track, a vocoder-enhanced epic called “amelia.” dear amelia features the 20-year-old alt-pop artist's recent releases “moshpit,” “made for you,” “we'll make this ok” featuring Travis Barker, “I miss myself” and most recently “Julian, king of Manhattan” - an ode to Julian Casablancas, the lead singer of the iconic New York City based band, The Strokes. She also got to work wither all-time favorite artist Jake Bugg on “let you down.”renforshort will headline a North American tour this fall. Kicking off in her hometown of Toronto, ON the tour will make stops at major markets including New York and Los Angeles. Joey Valance and Brae will support on all dates. renforshort will also perform at the already announced Riot Fest in Chicago and Firefly Festival in Dover, DE. See below for a complete list of tour dates. Tickets for renforshort's North American headline tour are on sale now at www.renforshort.com/tour Casting an alternative haze over pop, renforshort conjures emotionally charged anthems punctuated by her intimate delivery and unfiltered lyricism. Born and raised in Toronto, she initially gravitated towards influences as diverse as Nirvana and Amy Winehouse, learning how to sing and write songs. During high school, the 20-year-old artist quietly honed her craft with countless performances in local bars in between dropping original tunes online. Her 2020 debut EP, teenage angst, lived up to its title as it bottled coming-of-age confusion and catharsis into chantable anthems with no shortage of punk spirit. The single “fuck, i luv my friends” reacted with over 11 million Spotify streams, paving the way for her off saint dominique EP in 2021. Along the way, iconic Linkin Park co-founder and co-vocalist Mike Shinoda jumped at the chance to collaborate, while YUNGBLUD, Avril Lavigne, MGK and others invited her to share the stage with them. She ignited 2022 with the single “moshpit” as it arrived to widespread acclaim from Billboard, Teen Vogue, OnesToWatch, NME, and more as EUPHORIA. proclaimed, “the songstress is reinventing traditional pop music as we know it.” We want to hear from you!
