I've already done a Lententide episode devoted to contraltos singing the music of Bach, but it seemed to me that in the upheaval of today's vengeful and war-hungry world, we could use another contemplative episode to provide us with meditative (and even tuneful!) music to calm our spirits. The tunefulness comes especially from recordings of favorite religious music by Gounod, Franck, and other 19th-century French composers sung by Camille Maurane, Marcel Journet, Richard Verreau, and Françoise Pollet. Also included are a live excerpt from Parsifal with Jon Vickers and Hans Knappertsbusch; the miraculous yet voiceless Hugues Cuénod performing an excerpt from the first of Couperin's Leçons de Ténèbres; the unsung German-British soprano Ilse Wolf in a live performance of the Bach Johannes-Passion conducted by Pablo Casals; Gundula Janowitz in a searing but brief aria from Mendelssohn's Paulus; excerpts from settings of the Stabat Maters of Haydn and Dvorák, sung by Alfreda Hodgson, Sena Jurinac, and Heinz Hoppe; the original version of Hendrik Andriessen's exquisite Miroir de Peine cycle for voice and organ featuring our beloved Elly Ameling; and Jennie Tourel in an excerpt from her ultra-rare recording of Hindemith's Das Marienleben preceded by Lotte Lehmanns's recitation of the same Rilke poem. Op vrijdag 7 maart vieren we Maurice Ravels 150e verjaardag, dus dat is goede reden om naar zijn muziek en de muziek van zijn bewonderaars te luisteren! Heb je je ooit afgevraagd hoe Ravel op een accordeon zou klinken? Dan worden je vragen in deze aflevering beantwoord! En er zijn heel veel fantastische concerten de komende tijd, die we toch zoveel mogelijk bespreken, op het gevaar af dat er keuzestress ontstaat.. Matthaus - Rob Vermeulen / Johannette Zomer (concerttip) eindstuk: Kilar - Exodus Een Zwitserse horlogemaker. Zo noemde Igor Stravinsky zijn Franse collega Maurice Ravel. Ironie en lof tegelijk: hij doelde op Ravels ongelooflijke aandacht voor details, voor nuances, voor de kleine zaken die een muziekstuk groots maken. Die eigenschap zorgde er voor dat een onwillige pianoleerling uitgroeide tot een van de grootste orkestratoren ooit. Ravel was overigens inderdaad half-Zwitsers en zijn vader was uitvinder. Van jongs af aan werd Maurice omringd door radertjes, wieltjes en muziek. De rest van zijn leven zou hij een voorliefde houden voor speeldozen, mechanische vogels en inventief instrumentarium. Zo was hij een absoluut voorvechter van de destijds nog weinig gebruikte saxofoon, en gebruikte hij percussie uit exotische landen. Ravel vertrouwde uitsluitend op zijn spontane inspiratie wat nogal riskant was, zeker omdat hij ook een perfectionist was. Zoals hij zelf opmerkte: “Ik kan er jaren over doen om een bepaalde noot op te schrijven…. En besteed veel tijd aan het weglaten van alles wat overbodig is om tenslotte zo volledig mogelijk de uiteindelijke helderheid te bereiken waarnaar ik streef.” Theodor Adorno karakteriseerde Maurice Ravel 1875-1937) als de 'meester van de klinkende maskers', de onlangs overleden Pierre Boulez beschouwde hem als een van de beste leermeesters op het gebied van de orkestratiekunst. Over Le Tombeau de Couperin: Neem Le tombeau de Couperin: deze suite zou althans op papier zijn meest persoonlijke werk moeten zijn, grotendeels geschreven vlak ná zijn ervaringen aan het front van de Eerste Wereldoorlog, grotendeels gecomponeerd vlak ná de dood van zijn moeder, en zelfs opgedragen aan een reeks vrienden die sneuvelden in de oorlog. Maar het eindresultaat is eerder een set maskers in de vorm van neobarokke, overwegend opgewekte dansen. Zoals een tijdgenoot, componist Jean Roger-­Ducasse, vaststelde: Ravel had niet eens het fatsoen om tenminste een droeve Sarabande toe te voegen. Ravel was nu eenmaal geen romanticus à la Berlioz, en trouwens ook geen luidruchtige revolutionair à la Stravinsky, zelfs geen stille revolutionair à la Debussy. Zie ook het commentaar van een hedendaagse componist, de Brit George Benjamin, die weliswaar een bewonderaar van Ravel is:  ‘Het aspect van Ravel waarin ik mij het minst kan vinden, is het conservatisme van zijn vormen. Die werken perfect voor zijn muziek, maar hij is daarin niet zo avontuurlijk. Het is allemaal zo duidelijk omlijnd en klassiek (…); alles is in hokjes verdeeld, in zekere zin is hij een miniaturist. De vormen hebben een zekere gelijkvormigheid en zijn nogal netjes.'    Nergens lijkt deze analyse sterker op te gaan dan voor Le tombeau de Couperin, een doelmatig conservatieve vormenreeks voor piano solo met de delen Prelude, Fuga, Forlane, Rigaudon, Menuet en Toccata. Ravel begon vlak voor de Eerste Wereldoorlog aan deze hommage aan barokcomponist François Couperin: een zogeheten ‘tombeau' zoals dat in de Barok al gebruikelijk was. Hij voltooide de reeks na zijn terugkeer van het front in 1917, en bewerkte in 1919 vier van de zes delen voor orkest – de Fuga en Toccata vond hij waarschijnlijk te pianistisch gedacht. Toch het vermeend conservatieve karakter van de muziek kan worden genuanceerd. Al inzoomend op de partituur blijkt Ravels fijnzinnige én eigenzinnige invulling van de klassieke structuren. De Prelude bevat weliswaar typische Barok-elementen – doorlopende patroontjes en speelse ­voorslagen, maar Ravel speelt een geraffineerd spel met de harmonieën. Abrupte modulaties en tritonus-­intervallen verraden een twintigste-eeuwse geest, evenals het weidse pianobereik dat op een klavecimbel niet had gepast. De Forlane is harmonisch nóg avontuurlijker: de maten 146 en 147 bevatten zelfs ieder alle twaalf noten van de chromatische ladder. Toen Marguerite Long, de pianiste die de wereldpremière verzorgde, deze passage voor dirigent Camille Chevillard voorspeelde, bedekte hij veelbetekenend zijn oren.

Laetitia Bracco is a curator in the Research Support Mission of the Université de Lorraine libraries. She is in charge of the "ADOC Lorraine" data workshop, the support service for research data, as well as the Bibliometrics unit. At the national level, she leads the research data working group of the Couperin consortium. She is also the project leader for the French Open Science Monitor on research data and software codes. At the international level, she is a member of the SPARC Europe board and the coordinator of the Open Science Monitoring Initiative (OSMI). Für sein neues Album "Baroque Colours" hat der Pianist Martin Stadtfeld eine sehr persönliche Auswahl getroffen: Kurze Originalwerke von Bach, Händel, Scarlatti, Couperin und Rameau, aber auch Werke der weniger bekannten Komponisten Kuhnau, Galuppi, Soler und Royer. Außerdem hat er Stücke ausgesucht, die ihm besonders am Herzen liegen, er hat sie für Klavier neu bearbeitet und auch eigene Improvisationen hinzugefügt. Mit Bachs Goldberg-Variationen feierte Martin Stadtfeld im Alter von 22 Jahren seinen Durchbruch. SynopsisOn today's date in 1745 a 73-year-old French composer named Antoine Forqueray died in Mantes-la-Jolie outside Paris, where he had lived after his retirement as a court musician to King Louis XIV of France.Forqueray was a virtuoso on the viola da gamba, a bowed string instrument popular in the 17th and 18th centuries, but nowadays only played by specialists in old music. At the tender age of 10, Forqueray played before Louis XIV. Seven years later he landed a job at the Court of Versailles.In Forqueray's day the other great French gamba virtuoso and composer was Marin Marais, noted for his introspective, sweet, and gentle style of playing. Forqueray's style was extroverted and bold, even brash. People said Marais played like an angel, and Forqueray like the devil.Forqueray's style was so distinctive that three other French composers of the day, Jean-Philippe Rameau, François Couperin, and Jacques Duphly, each composed a piece named “La Forqueray” in tribute to him. Synopsis These days fallen American soldiers are often honored in silence, as their photos, names, ages, and hometowns are flashed on the TV screen during news programs. During World War I, the French composer Maurice Ravel served as an ambulance driver, and saw many soldiers die. He wanted to honor some of his fallen comrades, namely Jean Cruppi, Jean Dreyfus, the brothers Pierre and Pascal Gaudin—who were both killed by the same German artillery shell, Lieutenants Jacques Charlot and Gabriel Deluc, and Captain Joseph de Marliave.  Being a composer, Ravel chose music rather than silence to honor his war dead and wrote a suite of piano pieces he titled Le tombeau de Couperin — a joint tribute to his fallen comrades and a famous 18th century French composer. The resulting suite was premiered in 1919 by the great French pianist Marguerite Long, who was also Captain Marliave's widow. That same year, Ravel orchestrated four movements of his suite, and this orchestral version of Le Tombeau received its first performance in Paris on today's date in 1920. When criticized for composing a light-hearted, albeit reflective work, rather than a somber one, perhaps more appropriate for such somber topic, Ravel replied: "The dead are sad enough, in their eternal silence." Synopsis On this date in 1961, cellist Pablo Casals gave a chamber concert at the White House, at the invitation of President John F. Kennedy. The concert was given in honor of Governor Luis Muñoz of Puerto Rico, the home of Pablo Casals. Casals played works of Mendelssohn, Schumann and Couperin, with his own composition, Song of the Birds, as an encore. While eminent guests raved over the performance, the cellist's laconic comment was simply, “It went well.” Casals could afford to be blasé. After all, he had played at the White House before—for President Teddy Roosevelt back in 1904! Aaron Copland was also invited to the November 13th White House concert in 1961. In a diary entry, he noted: “Pierre Salinger and Senator Mike Mansfield were at our table. President Kennedy was in full view the entire time… I was surprised at his reddish-brown hair. No evil in the face, but plenty of ambition there, no doubt. Mrs. K. statuesque… After dinner we were treated to a concert by Pablo Casals. No American music. The next step.” That “next step” came the following spring. In May of 1962, the Kennedys presented Copland's ballet Billy the Kid at the White House for the visiting president of the Ivory Coast Republic, with Copland as guest of honor.
