Called "one of the biggest talents of his generation," Elias David Moncado, at a very young age, has already had an exceptional career. After winning his first competition at the age of 6, then his first international competition at the age of 8, he went on to win four major competitions after that (the Sendai Violin Competition in 2019, the International Karol Lipinski Violin Competition in 2019 (first grand prize and ten special prizes), the Valesia Musica Competition in 2021, and the Vladimir Spivakov Competition in 2021). His debut album was released in 2022 with works by Hindemith, Poulenc, and Bartok. Equally involved in different types of chamber music, he is a well-established international artist who is still just at the beginning of his career. We begin with my asking Elias about his very early beginnings as a violinist, his early studies with Professor Latica Honda-Rosenberg, and then his phenomenal success at international competitions. I asked about his mental outlook during those competitions, and his answer was both a surprise and revealing to me. We then speak about interpretation and memorization (and how he is able to memorize so many major concerti), and his thoughts about concentration.(Part 2 for Subscribers): During Covid, when he had no in-person performance opportunities, Elias learned the fiendishly difficult Bartok solo sonata as a way of using his free time to challenge himself. In 2022 he released his first solo album, and we talk about why he didn't record standard repertoire for his first recording. Because Elias is also deeply involved in playing chamber music, we talk about time management, and managing a career... "you need to create a full package as an artist." I then ask about the two 18th-century violins he plays, and we end with Elias talking about his special musical relationship with Anne Sophie Mutter.Would you like more inspirational stories, suggestions, insights, and a place to continue the conversations with other listeners? As part of a 10-concert European tour in June 2023, Anne-Sophie Mutter and her Virtuosi ensemble, comprising some of today's finest young string players, gave an acclaimed concert at the Vienna Musikverein. This took place just days before the violinist's 60th birthday and it speaks volumes that she chose to share a stage with her young colleagues rather than marking the occasion with a gala solo performance. Based on that live concert, Mutter's latest Deutsche Grammophon album shows the variety and versatility for which she has become renowned, its repertoire ranging from Vivaldi and Bach to Previn and John Williams, via Joseph Bologne. It is set for release on 10 November, with three taster tracks to be issued digitally, complete with videos: Williams's Theme from Schindler's List on 6 October; the Allegro finale from Vivaldi's Concerto for 3 Violins on 27 October; and the central Largo from Bologne's Violin Concerto in A major on the same day as the album. The Vienna concert was filmed as a Unitel production, in co-production with Deutsche Grammophon & ZDF, and in cooperation with Arte Concert & Wiener Musikverein. Viewers around the world can enjoy it now on STAGE+, with the exception of those in France and Germany, who will be able to access it on the platform from 29 December onwards. SynopsisOh, to have been in Vienna on today's date in 1785! Wolfgang Mozart had just finished a new piano concerto a week earlier and quite likely performed it himself for the first time as an intermission feature at a performance of the oratorio Ester, by Karl Ditters von Dittersdorf, conducted by Antonio Salieri. Now wouldn't that have made for a good scene in the movie Amadeus?Fast forward 11 years for another memorable concert at the Theater an der Wien, when on today's date in 1806, it was Beethoven's turn to premiere one of his new concertos in Emanuel Schikaneder's Viennese theater. Alongside works of Mozart, Méhul, Cherubini and Handel, Beethoven's Violin Concerto was introduced to the world, with Franz Clement as the soloist.Beethoven's friend Czerny recalled that Clement's performance was greeted with “noisy bravos.”But a contemporary Viennese music critic wrote: “While there are beautiful things in the concerto … the endless repetition of some commonplace passages could prove fatiguing.” The reviewer's final assessment? “If Beethoven pursues his present path, it will go ill with him and the public alike.”Music Played in Today's ProgramWolfgang Mozart (1756-1791) Piano Concerto No. 22; Mitsuko Uchida, piano; English Chamber Orchestra; Jeffrey Tate, cond.
Synopsis When you listen to classical music like Bach or Mozart, you are taking a trip in a time machine. Or, as Shirley MacLaine might put it, “Classical music is the soundtrack of your previous lives.”American composer Sebastian Currier goes even further, and says:“It's only a little bit of an exaggeration to say that music is made of nothing BUT time – well, and air too … melodic or rhythmic gestures are made of a series of events moving forward in time. … the rest is air. A musician bows a string, blows air in a cylinder, strikes a metal object, and a series of sound waves take that information to our ears … It has always been fascinating to me that an art form that is so penetrating … is made of such ephemeral stuff.”So no surprise Currier gave the title Time Machines to his work for violin and orchestra that premiered in New York City on today's date in 2011. The German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter was the soloist performing with the New York Philharmonic led by Alan Gilbert, and they made a live recording of the new work. On this podcast, we learn about many composers whose names are familiar to you because they are composers who are widely recognized and performed. But there are many great composers whose names are not familiar to us, whose works have been largely lost over time. Today we are going to learn about one such composer. A biracial violin prodigy who inspired one of Beethoven's most famous and passionate pieces, George Bridgetower is mostly known for his famous public rift with the volatile composer. We'll learn more about the legendary concert where two brilliant performers dazzled a crowd with their incredible skills, though only one performer would go onto become a household name. LA Phil Principal Pianist/Keyboardist talks about her unique experience of recording the piano solos for Steven Spielberg's The Fabelmans, including the original score by John Williams Hosted by Maurizio Caschetto John Williams has written solo parts spotlighting specific instrumentalists both in his film scores and works for the concert hall. While it's not rare to see such superstar musicians as Itzhak Perlman, Yo-Yo Ma or Anne-Sophie Mutter as the featured soloist and the dedicatee of a piece, Williams has often used the talents of some of the best musicians of the Los Angeles area, including distinguished members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic. It's the case of Joanne Pearce Martin, the Principal Keyboardist and Pianist of the LA Phil, who recently had the honour to be the featured piano soloist on the soundtrack for Steven Spielberg's acclaimed The Fabelmans, performing both the piano solos from the classical repertoire as heard in the film and John Williams' Academy Award-nominated original score. In this conversation, Joanne talks about her experience of playing for John Williams and Steven Spielberg on The Fabelmans, sharing stories and insights about her unique collaboration with both the director and the composer during the creation of the film's soundtrack. She also talks about her experience playing under John Williams at the Hollywood Bowl and at the Disney Hall with the LA Phil many times over the years and also as rehearsal pianist, giving her own perspective on the Maestro's musicianship as a composer and conductor.

We really have to change the energy in this place and I think we did.En dokumentär från 2022 av Eva Sjöstrand.

Synopsis On today's date in 2001, during the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland, the German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter premiered a new chamber work for violin and piano titled “Tango, Song and Dance.” She had commissioned the work from Andre Previn several years earlier, but its premiere was delayed as Mutter embarked on a project to perform and record all Beethoven's Violin Sonatas. “After doing all those stern [Beethoven] recitals,” said Mutter, “I wanted to play pieces which reflected the basis of musical history, the folksongs and dances which has inspired composers through so many centuries. ‘Tango, Song and Dance' is both modern and old-fashioned, and it touches the heart, especially the slow movement, which is really a ‘Song Without Words'.” And that wasn't the only thing to touch her heart. It was around this time that Previn and Mutter became husband and wife. For his part, Andre said, “I have one piece of advice to composers for the violin – make sure Anne-Sophie premieres your piece. Then you're home and dry, and everything works!” Other composers seem to agree, and Krzysztof Penderecki, Witold Lutoslawski, Henri Dutilleux, Wolfgang Rihm, and John Williams have all written violin works for Anne-Sophie Mutter. Pittsburgh Symphony Music Director Manfred Honeck visited the WQED studios for a live conversation on the QED Morning show on August 10th. It was the first in-person interview during the last two years of the pandemic outside of live broadcasts at Heinz Hall. Maestro Honeck ran down the special features of the upcoming 75th Anniversary European Tour of the Orchestra and the special guests Anne Sophie Mutter, Helene Grimaud and Gautier Capucon. He says he has sailed through the pandemic but regrets that so many have suffered and that audiences for music are slowly rebounding. Maestro Honeck mentioned his summer vacation with his family in the Tirol and Tuscany, ran down the special repertoire on the tour including Ligeti's "Lontano" and his transcriptions of music by Erwin Schulhoff. Manfred Honeck thanked the tour report sponsors Thiel College, Botkin Family Wealth Management and Elliot Dinkin of Cowden Associates and promised to provide dressing room commentary whenever possible.
By turns majestic, lyrical and iconoclastic, Beethoven's Violin Concerto has been a signature work for Anne-Sophie Mutter ever since it propelled her to fame as a teenager. Riccardo Muti presents it alongside Brahms' First Symphony, another 19th century landmark whose moods come in vast waves, from brooding, restless melancholy to ecstatic joy. Ticket holders are invited to a free preconcert conversation featuring Carl Grapentine in Orchestra Hall 75 minutes before the performance. The conversation will last approximately 30 minutes. No additional tickets required. Learn more: cso.org/performances/21-22/cso-classical/muti-mutter-beethoven-violin-concerto

Anne-Sophie Mutter premiered John Williams's Second Violin Concerto, written for her, in Boston in July 2021 and DG recorded the work shortly after. One of the most listened-to composers on the planet, thanks to his peerless film scores, Williams has long been drawn the concerto as a form, and has written for many great musicians, including Gil Shaham and Yo-Yo Ma. James Jolly caught up with John Williams by phone earlier this year to talk about the new violin concerto, Williams's concert music and his love of conducting. John Williams features on the cover of the July issue of Gramophone, out on June 10. Andrew Farach-Colton writes about Williams's concert music and we review the new DG recording of the Second Violin Concerto as well as Yo-Yo Ma's new Sony Classical recording of the revised version of John Williams's Cello Concerto.

Synopsis On today's date in 2002, a new Violin Concerto received its premiere by the Boston Symphony and German violinist Anne-Sophie Mutter, with the new work's composer, Sir Andre Previn conducting. Previn was born in Berlin, came to the United States in 1939, and became an American citizen in 1943. His Concerto reflects a homecoming of sorts in its third movement, subtitled “From a Train in Germany.” In 1999, while riding on a German train Previn had telephoned a birthday greeting to his manager, who suggested that the new composition he was planning for Boston might reflect that return to the country of his birth. And so its 3rd movement ended up incorporating a German children's song suggested by Anne-Sophie Mutter, one that Previn had known as a child. Autobiographical inferences throughout the Concerto are also suggested by an inscription from T. S. Eliot's “Four Quartets,” which reads: “We shall not cease from exploration/And the end of all our exploring/will be to arrive where we started/and know the place for the first time.” And, as if to underscore the autobiographical interplay of life and art, Mutter and Previn were married on August 1, 2002, five months after the premiere of “their” Concerto.
