We take a stab at untangling and demystifying the ultra-violent exploding barbed wire deathmatch. In our most explosive episode yet, Headmaster Michael (he/him) and Homecoming King Samee (they/them) remove the ring ropes and replace them with barbed wire to get deeper into exploding barbed wire deathmatches. Atsushi Onita, founder of Frontier Martial Arts Wrestling (FMW), created exploding barbed wire deathmatches, thus providing us with the most intense, scary match stipulations in professional wrestling. 30 years after this type of match debuts, Kenny Omega and Jon Moxley clash in a ring surrounded by barbed wire and explosives. In the 19th episode of Victory Through Guts we are on the road to Wrestlemarinepiad 1991 but first must tackle the first half of AJW's Tag League the Best from October 1991. While some teams are comprised of duos you would expect like Bison Kimura and Aja Kong from Jungle Jack, there's a myriad of oddball teams such as rivals Kyoko Inoue and Toshiyo Yamada vying for the tournament win. While injuries and international tours sent the tournament into limbo until December, the matches we got to see via AJW Classics Episode 50 made it clear that there was still All Gas No Breaks for the women of AJW. In our coverage from other places in the joshi wrestling world, we discuss the FMW 2nd Anniversary Show from late September 1991. On it, we saw Reggie Bennett battle Combat Toyoda for the WWA Womens Championship, as well as Russian Judo Champion and Alex's new favorite wrestler Svetlana Goundarenko taking on Megumi Kudo in a special singles match. Hear about all that and more on this episode of Victory Through Guts! Follow VTG on Twitter: @VTGPod @XXIchiban (Dylan) @LWOSPRAlexR (Alex)

In this slightly different episode of the VTG Podcast, Dylan and Alex discuss the growing women's division in Frontier Martial-Arts Wrestling back in 1990, including matches from three separate FMW shows. After the first dose of FMW for the boys left a bad taste in their mouths back in May, Atsushi Onita's world-renowned company came in swinging in the second half of 1990, with tremendous performances by Megumi Kudo, Miwa Sato, Combat Toyoda, and two rookies who would later become known as Crusher Maedomari and Shark Tsuchiya. After this viewing, it is clear to see why FMW is always a subject of conversation when it comes to the glory days of Joshi Puroesu. Please Enjoy! In this seventh episode of Victory Through Guts Dylan and Alex focus on the infamous Frontier Martial- Arts Wrestling and its burgeoning Joshi division. While there isn't a lot of content available, they watch matches from three different shows which showcases talents like Megumi Kudo, Combat Toyoda, Reibun Amada and other up and coming names in the FMW Joshi division, including future Mad Dog Military members. Our hosts then reflect on their thoughts about FMW's Joshi division and where it stands compared to companies like AJW and JWP. Please Enjoy! In the film "The Five Obstructions" directors Lars von Trier and Jørgen Leth explore the idea that obstacles (or obstructions) can often open up new avenues for artistic expression. It is with this in mind that Combat Toyoda and Megumi Kudo enter the ring in a No Ropes Exploding Barbed-Wire Deathmatch to lower the curtain on Toyoda's career. As the match progresses we begin to see that it's the things the women can't do because of their in-ring restrictions that make this into one of the truly great entries in the Deathmatch genre. Your boys are joined by Jason Gibbs, making his second appearance on the show, who will help break down all the action in the match. Remember to suggest matches for us to watch @TIAPOD on twitter, via e-mail at thisisawesomepod@gmail.com or even in your iTunes review! With Hayabusa suffering severe injuries FMW's ace begin 1996 going on the shelf. In April of 1993 the women of Joshi were on fire. As we looked at least year they had delivered with Dream Slam I in Yokahama, eleven days later they headed to Osaka and tried to pull off the same trick and they may have actually topped it. AJW, LLPW, JWP and FMW come together to deliver a breath taking card featuring Chigusa Nagayo, Bull Nakano, The LCO, Combat Toyoda, Megumi Kudo, Shinobu Kandori, Dynamite Kansai, Mayumi Ozaki, Toshiyo Yamada and Manami Toyota. James is joined by Chelsea Spollen of ShouldersUp.net to explain the action.
By 1990, FMW had gone from MMA curiosity, to serious Indie contender. James and Chelsea look at the rise of the company in that first twelve month period. They look at their developing Joshi division, a first for Japanese wrestling, as Combat Toyoda and Megumi Kudo light a fire under the notion of what a woman can do in a Japanese ring. Atsushi Ohnita main events against an array of opponents and delivers some of the most diverse wrestling in history. 16 year old Mascarita Sagrada pinning men more than twice his size? Check. MMA mixed tags with gloves? Check. Tarzan Goto's Mullet? its all here folks.
