In this episode, we unpack why generative AI breaks so many of the assumptions security teams have relied on for decades. Bret explains why these systems are probabilistic rather than deterministic, and how that single shift creates what he calls an unbounded attack surface. Users are no longer limited to predefined buttons or workflows, and outputs are no longer constrained to a fixed database. The same prompt can succeed or fail depending on subtle changes, which makes single-pass testing and checkbox compliance dangerously misleading. Bret got his start as a teenager slinging fries at I-80's World's Largest Truck Stop in Walcott, Iowa, before bouncing through back-of-house gigs, front-of-house service, and eventually discovering a deep obsession with all things wine. Along the way, he lived a vagabond lifestyle, training obsessively in martial arts, hitchhiking on Grateful Dead tour, and bumming around Europe. As one of the city's foremost wine curators, Bret is known for building lists that favor lesser-known regions, older vintages, and unexpected finds. As Republicans face increasing pressure to put forth a healthcare solution, four in the party broke ranks with the rest and joined a Democrat-led discharge petition, which would force a vote on a three-year extension of COVID-Era Affordable Care Act subsidies set to expire at the end of January. One of those Republicans, Congressman Mike Lawler (R-NY), spoke to Bret alongside Congressman Josh Gottheimer (D-NJ) last week to explain his support for temporarily extending the subsidies, despite the potential backlash it could bring from the rest of his party.    The discharge petition passed on December 17, 2025, although a vote on extending the ACA subsidies has not yet been scheduled.
