From nautical corpse candles to swashbuckling Devils, explore the folklore of the high seas on the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales podcast. In times gone by, the brave seafaring men who set sail from Wales needed all the help they could get for a trouble-free voyage. What would the weather be like? Would it be calm sailing? And were there any evil entities in the waves looking to cause them mischief? In the folklore-packed episode of the Ghosts and Folklore of Wales podcast, author Mark Rees (Ghosts of Wales) explores many an old tradition and superstition, include: feline folklore in which cats could be used to predict the future, the origin of the expression Davy Jones' Locker, defending yourself from evil spirits, how the Devil would sail the seas in search of souls to take back to the underworld, the ghosts who ride the white-waves during stormy weather, and even some handy uses for what Richard Burton described as Welshman's caviar - laverbread. What is the Ghosts & Folklore of Wales with Mark Rees podcast? In early 2020, Mark Rees launched the world’s first podcast dedicated to Welsh ghost stories, folklore, myths and legends. By combining his unique research and insights from many books and articles with long-lost tales from dusty old tomes, this weird and wonderful podcast takes a fascinating look at the country's countless curious subjects. New episodes are uploaded every Thursday and feature everything from real-life encounters with pesky poltergeists to fantastical beasts from the Mabinogion and the skulled-headed Christmas favourite herself, the Mari Lwyd. Join us this week as we talk about the ecosystem that comprises 71% of the Earth's surface and contains 97% of the Earth's water: the ocean!! There is so much still left to explore in this vast expanse, and we only scratched the surface of it, but small part of the ocean that we have experienced is pretty incredible, and plenty of authors seem to think so too! Tonight on Dump Stats... The battle is over. The Bad Humanoids are victorious...but at what cost? Eldeth Smashington has perished, AceBuzz is arrested for treason, and the Christopher's Cross has been lost to Hambone's Pocket (this universe's equivalent of Davy Jones' Locker (it sunk)). The Bad Humanoids get comfortable on their new ship, captured Royal Navy Destroyer Alfonso V, and begin their interrogation of AceBuzz. AceBuzz claims "the Devil made me do it" and blames his traitorous actions on Jeff of Wizard House, who is known to have the power to control the wills of others. Could it be true? Or will he say anything to escape justice? Ace claims that he is haunted by visions of Jeff, and has no memory of his deception. He claims Jeff is in the very same room right now, even though he has been presumed dead for some time...now who does that remind you of? Meanwhile, Mordecurr rots in the brig, awaiting her own interrogation. Who is she? Where the heck is her heart? Thats not a metaphor, she literally has no heart! Where is it? Who knows? 3 Alestorm guys, 2 WSCA Metal guys, 1 tour bus, and 37 minutes of trout, cutlasses, shorts, blood, pizza, forums, Eurovision, concerts, and more. But there were no drunken rats, and Captain Morgan did not have his revenge on anyone. Ultimately this was quite tame; no one even walked the plank. Well, we did step off the tour bus onto a Massachusetts sidewalk, which is basically a concrete version of Davy Jones' Locker. Present for this discussion (hanging out basically) were Alestormers Christopher Bowes, Gareth Murdock, Ian Wilson, and WSCA 106.1 FM Metal Directors Jim Alvino & myself.
