At Christmas, you tell the truth... And the truth is, we're covering "Love Actually" this week in the first episode of the holiday season. This movie of intertwined character pieces is full of dated takes on dating in the early-2000s UK, but we're going to zero in on one very important cover song that ties all the stories together: Billy Mack's gloriously cynical Christmas cover of The Troggs' “Love Is All Around.” We'll unwrap several other versions of the song as well as take a listen to Bill Nighy's surprisingly extensive singing résumé!
If you ever wondered if guinea pigs would make good spies, do we have a movie for you. Danielle recaps the 2009 spy…thriller? G-Force. Which perhaps stands for Guinea Pig Force, but since there's a mole and a fly involved, maybe not? Not important. When Zach Galifianakis's elite guinea pig (and co.) task force is about to be on the figurative chopping block at the FBI, they decide to go rogue to show them how amazing they can be. Stumbling across a plot for world destruction brought to you by arms dealer-cum-appliance magnate, Bill Nighy (the British guy-hy), the guinea pigs are sure they'll impress, but when everything goes awry their program is shut down. Now on the literal chopping block, they make a run for it ending up at a local (and horrifying) pet store. Shenanigans ensue. Appliances come to life. Children try to murder guinea pigs with lacrosse sticks. Microwaves use cake for rodent bait. Animals may or may not be sentient; it's deeply unclear. And yet, we promise you, none of that will prepare you for one of the most shocking plot twists in movie history.
Horror movies, holiday slashers, and classic monster mayhem collide in this episode of This Week in Horror History, covering December 8–14 in spooky cinema. We dig into the releases, icons, and deep cuts that shaped horror long before Christmas morning ever arrived. This week's watch list includes:Christine (1983) – John Carpenter's sleek, icy adaptation of Stephen King's killer-car novel. We look at how this haunted Plymouth went from a modest box office performer to a cult favorite thanks to its mood, music, and vicious metal-on-flesh set pieces. The Wolfman (1941) – Lon Chaney Jr.'s tragic Larry Talbot helped define the sympathetic monster and rewrote the rules for werewolf lore. We talk legacy, atmosphere, and why this frosty Universal chiller still plays perfectly on a cold December night.Scream 2 (1997) – Meta slashers head to college as Sidney Prescott and Ghostface return in a sequel that should've fizzled but absolutely works. Film theory, sequel rules, and late-'90s horror energy all collide in one of the most successful slasher follow-ups ever.Maniac Cop 2 (1990) – An undead cop, wild stunts, and a grimy New York that feels like a haunted maze. We spotlight why this over-the-top sequel is a cult gem for fans of action-horror hybrids. We also roll through a birthday crawl for some horror legends: Rick Baker, Vampira, Bill Nighy, and Dee Wallace, celebrating how their work reshaped monsters, ghosts, and genre weirdos across decades. In our “Then and Now: Meta Slashers” segment, we use Scream 2 as a jumping-off point to talk about how self-aware horror evolved—from '90s snark to today's nostalgia-driven, legacy-sequel era. And for your weekly recommendation, we head back to the 1950s with Tarantula (1955), a giant-spider creature feature that channels Cold War anxieties into big, creepy fun and pairs beautifully with other atomic-age monster flicks. All that plus our sponsor Cozy Earth— 41% off with Promo Code SPOOKY ultra-comfy bedding perfect for staying warm while you binge horror history marathons in December. If you love horror podcasts, classic monster movies, '80s Stephen King adaptations, and meta slasher sequels, this week's trip through the dates will fill your holiday season watchlist and keep your nights eerie all December long.

What a total delight to have a meal with Bill, we could have chatted for hours and hours. Bill's fabulous podcast ‘ill advised by Bill Nighy' is available to listen to everywhere now. Though Bill Nighy's new podcast, ill-advised, is all about dishing thoughtful advice on the turmoils of others, that doesn't mean he wants to be mistaken for someone who has it all figured out. This is one of the first things he told Chioma after arriving at the London podcast studio in a suit, a Smedley sweater he designed himself, and Church's loafers. In honor of his podcast and the skillful advice he gave on British Vogue's Agony Uncle video, we asked Bill to answer listener questions and break down the secret behind his signature style, which led to the shocking revelation that he has never worn trainers in his life (well — except on one specific occasion). Despite insisting he's no advice expert, Bill still offers charming, genuinely helpful tips: how to get along with your in-laws over the holidays, a sweet way to propose to your partner, and a recommendation for a family-friendly film that adults and kids will love (hint: he stars in it!).Earlier in the show, Chloe shares details about next year's Met Gala spring 2026 exhibition theme titled “Costume Art”, which was just announced Monday morning. Chioma recaps the GQ London Men of the Year event, where she wore a chic brown Aaron Esh suit and had a fun text conversation with Cynthia Erivo about her excitement for Wicked: For Good (which she plans to see this weekend!). Plus, a fun a recap of the 16 Arlington show from earlier this week where Lily Allen made her runway debut! The Run-Through with Vogue is your go-to podcast where fashion meets culture. The title that just won't die, go figure. This version of Lazarus stars Bill Nighy and Sam Claflin, and although it's a British production, it's helmed by one of America's most prolific authors, Harlan Coben. The premise is simple: a psychologist who can speak to the undead is morally bound to uncover the truth behind how they met their ultimate ends.If you've ever seen a ghost story before (Archive 81, The Haunting, Tru Calling, etc.) you know exactly what you're signing up for. Tune in to hear our breakdown of the pilot, our rating, and our thoughts on the directorial choices and more.Welcome to Today's Episode!

We have a Lazarus double bill this week as both showrunner Harlan Coben and Star Bill Nighy drop by for separate (but thematically connected) chats about the new Prime Video thriller (which is embargoed, so we'll be reviewing it on Pilot+). Plus we go abseiling with Lauren Lyle in The Ridge on BBC2, head back to posh Victorian England with The Forsytes on Channel 5, and get a little ASMR from Julia Roberts in Leonard And Hungry Paul on BBC2. Elsewhere, Kay enquires as to just what it takes to make us all stop watching a show, and James issues a public apology. (Episode 359)

Grab your cricket bat, raid the fridge for a cold one, and head to the Winchester, because this week, the Born to Watch crew are diving deep into one of the smartest and most beloved horror-comedies of all time with their Shaun of the Dead (2004) review. With G-Man MIA (probably off playing Tekken in the shed), Matt and Sir Dimmy hold the fort to break down Edgar Wright's 2004 cult classic that reanimated the zombie genre and redefined the zombie flick with a pint of bitter and a dash of British wit.In this week's episode, the lads explore how Shaun of the Dead walks the tightrope between gore and giggles, creating a film that works just as well as a slacker comedy as it does a horror satire. Damo admits to confusing it with The World's End (don't worry, he's new here), while Matt reveals he's seen the film nearly 20 times and could watch it on loop, especially with a packet of pork crackle and a Pepsi Max.From the iconic walk to the shop (twice), to the Queen-backed zombie beatdown in the Winchester, the boys dissect every major scene with the kind of reverence usually reserved for Tarantino or Scorsese. They also dig into Simon Pegg's breakout role as the titular Shaun, Nick Frost's glorious (and infuriating) turn as Ed, and the supporting cast of Britcom legends including Lucy Davis, Dylan Moran, and the ever-reliable Bill Nighy. They ask all the important questions:Is Shaun actually a zombie at the start of the film, who awakens into humanity?Could a pub really be the best place to ride out the apocalypse? And how the hell did Shaun survive that crowd of flesh-eaters outside the Winchester?Damo goes full philosopher, questioning the human condition in the age of smartphones (spoiler: we're all zombies), while Matt wonders why anyone would throw priceless vinyl at the undead. But it's not all jokes and Queen sing-alongs, the episode also touches on the emotional beats of the film, like Shaun's relationship with his mum and stepdad, the heartbreak of watching loved ones turn, and the surprisingly poignant ending that still manages to sneak in one last gag.The boys also fire off rapid takes in “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly,” with highlights like:The perfect pacing and editing of the dual morning walk sequencesThe underappreciated brilliance of the bizarro “mirror crew” sceneAnd Ed's ability to be the most annoying – yet somehow still likeable – flatmate in cinema historyThrow in some choice reviews from critics (both good and hilariously bad), box office trivia, and the revelation that director Edgar Wright used just $4 million to craft a film that grossed over $30 million and launched a thousand pub-themed Halloween costumes, and you've got yourself one hell of a breakdown.Oh, and yes, the team briefly wonders why cricket bats are now over $1,000, a real horror show.So whether you're a diehard fan of the Cornetto Trilogy or new to the undead scene, this episode is a must-listen.Listen now on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, or wherever you get your podcasts!Join the conversation:Is Shaun of the Dead the best zombie comedy ever made?Would you ride out the apocalypse in a pub? Commissioner Dreyfus had for years wanted to see his infuriating underling Inspector Jacques Clouseau dead and buried and for a while, with the death of Peter Sellers in 1980, it seemed like the shambolic Sûreté shamus had indeed been laid to rest...... Until somebody had the bright idea of filming two new movies back-to-back trading on the Clouseau character - after all, the Pink Panther film series had been a massively successful franchise, why spoil it all just because the main actor was dead?First was Trail Of The Pink Panther which featured out-takes and deleted scenes from previous films, which was bad enough. Then Blake Edwards ran out of old footage so hit upon the idea of introducing a brand new character for the second feature, Curse Of The Pink Panther. This bumbling new detective, Clifton Sleigh, would be tasked with finding the missing Inspector Clouseau, and in the course of which would be just as hapless and hilarious and hopefully be seen as the heir to Sellers. In fact, the idea was to make six more films with Sleigh! I know right? It didn't quite work out. Jon Auty from Behind The Stunts joins Tyler to pick over the bones of this thoroughly-flogged dead horse and while acknowledging one or two genuine titters and some pretty impressive stunt work there's little else of any merit. Ted Wass, as Sgt Clifton Sleigh, tries to make the most of what he's given to work with (including an inflatable woman) and there's some fun to be had spotting familiar faces including Michael Elphick, Bill Nighy and - appearing as Turk Thrust II - Roger Moore. But the fact remains that it's a lame film that should never have been made and really should have been the final nail in that particular coffin. Yet amazingly it wasn't! (That's a story for another time)Jon talks about the various stunt coordinators involved with the film including Joe Dunne and Roy Alon and Behind The Stunts can be found here: https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/behind-the-stunts/id1547078357

This movie looks like an innocent little story about seniors who want to make the most of their golden years, but the craft behind it will knock your socks off. It's a multiple POV, multiple plot film and believe me, this is NOT an easy format to pull off. So if you're writing a story with more than one protagonist and/or more than one plot line, do yourself a favour — listen to this episode and learn from these master storytellers. -V. He's back. He's brooding. He's possibly plagiarising. And he's forgotten his sandwiches. This Liam Neeson Special features five of our most beloved (and ridiculous) parody interviews from the past three years — plus two raunchy sketches involving a sultry American MILF named Vagella Rick-Rocks, who may or may not be trying to seduce Liam in increasingly absurd scenarios.Along the way, Liam overshares about romance, attempts to rebrand himself as a serious creative artist, and pitches original ideas such as:A romantic comedy glove-based ensemble film (Glove Actually)A mob drama about therapy (The Carusos)A masked vigilante with Wilfred the butler and Boy Wonder, Robbie. (That Man)While giving us first-hand insight into his bizarre world of:Showing old ladies his 'Hamlet'African prostitutesLaughing at elephantsPeeing in men's handsHis short-lived career as SantaDoggingEach sketch is followed by commentary from Jorma and Ray, who try (and mostly fail) to make sense of Liam's creative process, real-life zoo visits and late night video games with celebrity friends like Carol Vorderman, Bill Nighy and Gerry Adams - and suspiciously familiar plotlines. It's part tribute, part chaos, part forgotten sandwiches – with extra lashings of filth. Send us a textListen To Alix's Latest EP "Bug"When songwriters reveal what shaped them, magic happens. Alix Page peels back the curtain on her artistic development in this intimate conversation about the films, music, and stories that built her creative foundation. From her early days leading worship at a Christian middle school to finding her voice at Orange County School of Arts, Alix shares how releasing her first single "Stripes" in 2020 marked the beginning of her musical journey. What truly transformed her approach was discovering Phoebe Bridgers' "Stranger in the Alps" – an album that showed her a new path forward. "I hadn't heard anything like that until then," Alix reveals, explaining how Bridgers' stripped-back authenticity gave her permission to simply show up and be herself. The conversation weaves through unexpected connections – like collaborating with Mark McKenna from "Sing Street" after years of using John Carney's film as pre-tour inspiration, or bumping into Bill Nighy the day after watching him in "Emma." These serendipitous moments mirror Alix's songwriting approach: finding beauty in life's small, meaningful intersections. What emerges is a portrait of an artist whose work blends the melancholic storytelling of Bridgers, the character depth of Jane Austen adaptations, and the emotional honesty of "500 Days of Summer." For fans of Alix's music or anyone fascinated by creative influence, this episode offers a window into how art inspires art across generations and mediums.Listen now to discover the cultural touchstones behind one of today's most captivating emerging songwriters – and perhaps gain insight into the influences shaping your own creative path.See Alix on TourFollow My Pop Five: @mypopfive on all platforms We'll see you next time.
