Who - or what - was moving the stones in the dead of night? What were  those uncanny voices? Why would a church be built in one place… only to appear somewhere else the next morning? And why do so many Welsh villages share the same unsettling story?  Across Wales, there are legends of churches that refused to stay put. Builders would spend all day raising walls and laying foundations… only to return the next morning and find everything gone - the stones carried off, the work undone and sometimes reassembled miles away. In some places, voices were heard in the darkness, guiding where the church should stand. In others, unseen forces simply dismantled whatever humans tried to build. From Carmarthenshire to Ceredigion, these stories appear again and again - too similar to ignore, too strange to explain. Are they echoes of real disputes, lost buildings and forgotten histories… or something older, buried deep in the landscape? Russ Williams is a Welsh blogger & the author of Where the Folk; A Welsh Folklore Roadtrip from Caernarfon, Wales. After readings about the Cŵn Annwn [a mythological pack of otherworldly hunting hounds], we open our conversation on Welsh identity with the preservation of their Celtic language along with tidbits of history and local foods such as the lunch meal of the miners, the Welsh oggie. From gnomes to kobolds, dvergr to hobs, it's time to gather up our mining lamps and shed some light on the very shadowy history of goblins...Part of the "Three Ravens Bestiary" series, we start by chatting through ways in which, across the last two centuries, we have come to think of goblins as distinct fae creatures, separate from elves, pucks, and boggarts. Yet, if we look back a little further then we soon discover that the words we use to define these creatures have not only common roots but common narrative origins.After discussing beliefs surrounding the Ancient Egyptian dwarf god Bes and the Greco-Roman origin story for all fae creatures, which involves a deformed fire god, an infamous Classical witch cult, and an important drunken donkey ride, we move forward in time to explore how Brythonic, Norman, Anglo Saxon and Norse cultures wrote about goblins, and how different words for the same thing led to 18th and 19th century definitions that might leave us scratching our heads. Because if a goblin can leave us 'elf shot' then is it not just an elf? And if goblins come from underground, are they not just faeries in the Celtic tradition? And if 16th century alchemists can make up new words for ancient mythical beasts, is it wrong to suggest new definitions years later that muddy the waters even further?It's a messy topic that roves from the Icelandic Eddas to Shakespeare, The Mabinogion to witch trials, but don't be afraid of the darkness. The legends of Rhiannon come primarily from the Mabinogion, a cycle of fourth Welsh myths that tell, in part, the story of Pwyll Pen Annwn who married Rhiannon. The stories date to the twelfth century although their origins likely go much further back in Celtic history. Rhiannon is a Welsh witch or druid who uses her power to escape an unwanted courtship and marry the man she chooses. But a lie finds her subject to a terrible penance that has linked her with Epona, goddess of horses, ever since. We tell the story of Rhiannon and Pwyll and also her marriage to Manawydan, brother of Branwen, after Pwyll's disappearance.
