Who knocks at midnight—and what do they want? Are these visitors of the night bringing gifts or a curse? When a knock came at midnight, the family inside had no idea the supernatural visitors weren't just visiting—they were hunting.  A seemingly generous call from the Tylwyth Teg—the fairy folk of Welsh folklore—soon unravels into one of the darkest changeling tales ever recorded in Wales. Why did the visitors bring gifts of gold? What happened to the baby in the cradle? And what terrible fate awaited those left behind? Delve into a true 19th-century account of eerie music, fairy rituals, and an exchange that shattered a family—and maybe changed the future of a Welsh farm forever. Mark Rees uncovers this eerie legend in all its tragic, titivating detail, blending dark fairy tale with haunted history and the strange logic of folklore. What would you do if you came face to face with a ghostly hound? Would you reach out to pet it, or run the other way? And what if that spectral dog wasn't just a harmless apparition, but a chilling omen of death? In this episode, we explore two terrifying real-life encounters with ghost dogs in Wales - one a faithful spirit bound by loyalty, the other a sinister harbinger of doom. What happened when a man walking home through a mysterious valley discovered his own dog frozen in fear at the sight of a spectral collie? And why did a woman's innocent stroll past a quarry end with an eerie premonition that proved horrifyingly true? These aren't just mythological creatures like the legendary Cŵn Annwn of Welsh folklore - these are ghostly animals reported in the 20th century, with unnerving consequences for those who saw them. Are these phantom hounds restless spirits of departed pets, or something far more sinister? Ghosts and Folklore of Wales with Mark Rees

The Ghosts and Folklore Podcast is celebrating a monumental milestone – Episode 150 – with a festive, eerie twist. For this special Christmas edition, host Mark Rees blends the magic of the holiday season with haunting tales and mysterious folklore. Get ready for a journey into the strange and supernatural, featuring festive ghosts, ancient traditions, and a mystery that will (OK, might!) keep you on edge. So grab your favourite drink, cosy up by the fire, and let's dive into a world where the spirits of Christmas past are very much alive! Christmas Ghosts: A Welsh Pub and the Tolaeth Mark kicks off this festive celebration by taking us to a Welsh pub during Christmas in the late Victorian era. American folklorist Wirt Sikes recounts a memorable visit to a Carmarthenshire inn, where the locals enjoyed good food, drink, music, and ghostly tales. But the pub wasn't just a place for celebration – it was also a hotspot for strange happenings. In this episode, Mark explores a mysterious death omen from Welsh folklore – the Tolaeth. This eerie phenomenon, thought to be linked to the tolling of church bells, is a haunting reminder that not all is merry and bright during the holidays. But what exactly is the Tolaeth, and how does it relate to death and Christmas traditions? Could the clanging of church bells really be a warning of impending doom? Listen to the episode to uncover this chilling mystery! Festive Folklore: The Ghostly Tolling of the Bells Unlike the loud, screeching death omens like the cyhyraeth, the Tolaeth manifests as soft knocks, footsteps, or even the sound of a carriage – sometimes heard just before someone's passing. One especially eerie story told in this episode revolves around a farmer who hears strange knockings at his door on Christmas Eve. These supernatural knocks were a sign of impending death, a harbinger of loss, yet a part of the Christmas folklore that has been passed down through generations. But how does the Tolaeth connect to the church bells that toll mysteriously at midnight? And could these sounds be warning of death within the family? Tune in to uncover the eerie details and chilling implications of this folklore. The Eerie Legend of the Blaenporth Church Bell A captivating tale featured in this episode is that of the Blaenporth Church Bell. This legend tells of a tolling bell that foretold death in certain families. But here's the twist – the bell would toll unrung by human hands, and the sound could be heard at midnight, signalling an impending death. In the story, a farmer helps a spirit return a stolen silver communion cup to the church, earning the promise of being warned of his family's death through the mysterious tolling of the bell. As Mark recounts, this death omen came with a unique twist: a forewarning that allowed the family to prepare for their loss. But could it also be a metaphor for the way we process death during the holiday season? Listen in to hear the full legend and decide for yourself. A Festive Death Omen or Santa's Visit? Mark wraps up this episode on a lighter note, inviting listeners to consider the whimsical side of the Tolaeth. What if the strange knocks on Christmas Eve aren't a forewarning of death, but a surprise visit from Santa Claus? Picture this: You're lying in bed, the sounds of footsteps echoing through the house. Is it Santa delivering gifts, or is it the Tolaeth preparing you for a deathly encounter? Maybe, just maybe, it's a little bit of both. The 150th Episode: A Journey Through Time and Tales Mark's passion for folklore and ghostly tales shines through as he celebrates reaching the 150th episode of the Ghosts and Folklore Podcast. Reflecting on the journey so far, which started in early 2020 during the first Covid lockdown, we look forward to more eerie stories, chilling legends, and fascinating folk traditions. Join the Celebration If you love a good ghost story and want to learn more about Welsh folklore, haunted legends, and eerie traditions, this special Christmas 150th episode of the Ghosts and Folklore Podcast is a must-listen. The festive season is the perfect time to dive into these spine-tingling tales of the supernatural. From festive food and drink to holiday ghosts and mysterious omens, this episode has it all! What will you uncover? What is the Tolaeth, and how does it relate to death omens? Can the tolling of church bells really predict death in Welsh folklore? What strange sounds are heard before a death in Wales? Could the Tolaeth be the same sound that signals Santa's arrival?   ORDER PARANORMAL SWANSEA AND GOWER BY MARK REES: Mark's latest "Ghosts of Wales" book "Paranormal Cardiff". Gwyn Thomas (1936-2016) This is the first of a short run of poems in which poets use other works of literature or characters from literature to make a point or to consider an idea. Hamlet is one of the most famous characters in the western tradition, so much so that he has escaped his play and lives a life of his own. People who have never seen a version of the play or read it have heard of him. ‘To be or not to be' entered everyday speech so long ago it may be used without any knowledge of what the rest of the speech contains. It's a young man struggling to verbalise a reason for either living or dying. Anyone can be driven to ask ‘what is the point' or ‘what is the meaning of life'. You don't need to be haunted by what may be the revengeful ghost of your father, or suspect your mother of adultery with your regicidal, fratricidal uncle. Once the religious and philosophical answers have been rejected, the purpose of life becomes finding a a purpose that will make life seem desirable. As Thomas says in this poem, it doesn't have to be a desire to win an olympic medal or climb mount Everest. Growing onions will do it. Only when you have a reason to live, that matters to you, will you fear death, and only having feared death will you have lived. I found this poem quoted at the end of Tony Conran's introduction to ‘Welsh Verse; Translations by Tony Conran.' Poetry Wales Press 1986. I knew of Gwyn Thomas as a translator of The Mabinogion and his reputation as a poet. I know very little about this poem except I assume it's translated by Tony Conran from Welsh. If anyone knows differently please let me know.

From gnomes to kobolds, dvergr to hobs, it's time to gather up our mining lamps and shed some light on the very shadowy history of goblins...Part of the "Three Ravens Bestiary" series, we start by chatting through ways in which, across the last two centuries, we have come to think of goblins as distinct fae creatures, separate from elves, pucks, and boggarts. Yet, if we look back a little further then we soon discover that the words we use to define these creatures have not only common roots but common narrative origins. After discussing beliefs surrounding the Ancient Egyptian dwarf god Bes and the Greco-Roman origin story for all fae creatures, which involves a deformed fire god, an infamous Classical witch cult, and an important drunken donkey ride, we move forward in time to explore how Brythonic, Norman, Anglo Saxon and Norse cultures wrote about goblins, and how different words for the same thing led to 18th and 19th century definitions that might leave us scratching our heads. Because if a goblin can leave us 'elf shot' then is it not just an elf? And if goblins come from underground, are they not just faeries in the Celtic tradition? And if 16th century alchemists can make up new words for ancient mythical beasts, is it wrong to suggest new definitions years later that muddy the waters even further? It's a messy topic that roves from the Icelandic Eddas to Shakespeare, The Mabinogion to witch trials, but don't be afraid of the darkness. After all, the brightest of lights cast the longest of shadows. Many of which, we regret to inform you, do look quite phallic from certain angles...The Three Ravens is an English Myth and Folklore podcast hosted by award-winning writers Martin Vaux and Eleanor Conlon.Released on Mondays, each weekly episode focuses on one of England's 39 historic counties, exploring the history, folklore and traditions of the area, from ghosts and mermaids to mythical monsters, half-forgotten heroes, bloody legends, and much, much more. Then, and most importantly, the pair take turns to tell a new version of an ancient story from that county - all before discussing what that tale might mean, where it might have come from, and the truths it reveals about England's hidden past...Bonus Episodes are released on Thursdays (Magic and Medicines about folk remedies and arcane spells, Three Ravens Bestiary about cryptids and mythical creatures, Dying Arts about endangered heritage crafts, and Something Wicked about folkloric true crime from across history) plus Local Legends episodes on Saturdays - interviews with acclaimed authors, folklorists, podcasters and historians with unique perspectives on that week's county. With a range of exclusive content on Patreon, too, including audio ghost tours, the Three Ravens Newsletter, and monthly Three Ravens Film Club episodes about folk horror films from across the decades, why not join us around the campfire and listen in?Learn more at www.threeravenspodcast.com, join our Patreon at www.patreon.com/threeravenspodcast, and find links to our social media channels here: https://linktr.ee/threeravenspodcast Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. The legends of Rhiannon come primarily from the Mabinogion, a cycle of fourth Welsh myths that tell, in part, the story of Pwyll Pen Annwn who married Rhiannon. The stories date to the twelfth century although their origins likely go much further back in Celtic history. Rhiannon is a Welsh witch or druid who uses her power to escape an unwanted courtship and marry the man she chooses. But a lie finds her subject to a terrible penance that has linked her with Epona, goddess of horses, ever since. We tell the story of Rhiannon and Pwyll and also her marriage to Manawydan, brother of Branwen, after Pwyll's disappearance.

I am on a project for next week, so I thought I would reshare this episode from January 2022 with Michael Harvey, a storyteller. His journey into the profession is interesting, but more than that, our conversation is about the fundamental need for stories in our lives.  On the show, I mention Focus coaching and tools to get you moving.  The link to focus Coaching is here. Do book a free call; it will move you forward. https://lifepassionandbusiness.com/focus-coaching/   Michael Harvey : Story Myth and Magic  I believe that story is a fundamental part of who we are; our story gives life its meaning. But there is more; through sharing stories, we find resonance with others, and we build community bonds and stronger friendships. However, the digital world has commoditised it, and stories from music, film and social media surround us. To some extent, we have lost the art of the shared narrative. If there is one thing that all of the top entrepreneurs have in common, it is the ability to bring people together under a shared narrative. A story of how life could be better if… With all of that in mind, I am excited to bring you today's guest, Michael Harvey (no relation), a professional storyteller. As you will hear in this show, his vocation found him. You will discover the difference between performance and storytelling: how a well-told story creates the illusion of time stopping.  Our conversation covers his journey through myth and magic, and we touch on archetypes like the ‘Hero's Journey'. Michael also introduces us to the Mabinogion, a Welsh tale of lust and war from the Middle Ages.     Further details about this podcast, along with my Guest's website and social links are all available at: https://www.lifepassionandbusiness.com/michael-harvey-story-myth-magic     Life Passion & Business is dedicated to exploring what it takes to be Extraordinary, to face challenges and rejoice in the opportunities they bring, and expand our vision into new ways of thinking and living. The Amish Inquisition Podcast

This week we are joined by Howard Crowhurst.  Howard is an independent researcher based in the megalithic area of Carnac in France. He has been studying megalithic monuments and other ancient sites around the globe for nearly 40 years. His work led him to make life-changing discoveries about the knowledge that is encrypted in ancient monuments.  In this show we will be focussing on Howard's latest book, The Megalithic Plan.   ‘In the far distant past, Great Britain was measured and organised and unmovable monuments, earth mounds and henges, were built to immortalise the plan and to incorporate the differences linked to the earth's curvature. The principles behind this masterpiece and the reasons for which it was done, were handed down orally and in secrecy over the centuries by druids and Celtic monks until they were finally written down in cryptic form in the Mabinogion, the Welsh bardic tales. The installation was linked to the massive megalithic monuments in Brittany by incredibly precise meridian lines. This plan has remained hidden until now…'   What are the principles that the builders used ? Are they the same all over the globe, across continents and eras ? And why was it so important to put all that effort into creating these spectacular monuments ?  These are some of the questions that Howard has spent most of his life working on, and the answers he has found are truly ground-breaking.   Website: https://howardcrowhurst.com/   YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@HowardCrowhurst   Books: https://www.amazon.co.uk/stores/author/B00J7U1QD4/allbooks?ingress=0&visitId=2e02c557-0583-4fbb-a7ec-74c926b03f7e&ref_=ap_rdr   Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100089949462873   #howardcrowhurst #megaliths #megalithbuilders ____________________________________________________________________ Follow us here: https://allmylinks.com/the-amish-inquisition Signup for the newsletter, join the community, follow us online, and most importantly share links!  Producer Credits for Ep 313: Emma Bridges, Danny G, Helen and Aliyah ____________________________________________________________________ Leave us a voicemail: 07562245894 Message us here....follow, like, subscribe and share. Nos Calan Gaeaf - as Halloween is known in the Welsh language - is the perfect time of year for ghost stories and, of course, ghost hunting. The "most haunted" location for this year's eerie exploration is a live music venue in the heart of Swansea city centre just off the Kingsway that has never featured on a recorded investigation before. The Bunkhouse is a bar where members of staff have long spoken of unexpected supernatural encounters, in recent times and under former names stretching back through the decades, where strange reports speak of uncanny sounds, eerie chills, and all manner of phenomenon in the cellar. For this paranormal investigation, which was recorded live by Mark, you can expect updates, interviews, and recordings of mysterious events if and when they unfold. Halloween folklore of Wales and the world: explore the haunted history of Nos Calan Gaeaf with Mark Rees and a special guest on this eerie seasonal special. Nos Calan Gaeaf, as Halloween is known in the Welsh language, has long been a time for tradition and festivities. But how did Victorian celebrations differ from modern-day parties? By teaming up with fellow cultural writer Chris Carra (Planet Health), they aim to investigate the Halloween folklore of Wales and the world, and delve back into their own childhoods to see how the holiday continues to evolve. From dressing up as the Ghostbusters in the 1980s to living in Canada, Mark and Chris offer a unique perspective on Halloween celebrations that contrast and complement North American traditions. with those in Wales. They also look at how the holiday has changed for a new generation, how costumes became part of the Halloween experience, and the history of Halloween games involving apples and candles. They discover the surprising connection between Welsh folklore and modern trick-or-treating, which might have evolved from begging for bread on All Souls' Day into a fun tradition. And of course, no Halloween folklore episode would be complete without the centuries-old tradition of carving vegetables, including the Welsh swede, to create eerie jack-o'-lanterns, or the even creepier apparition that is the Welsh jac-y-lantern. If that wasn't enough, they look ahead to this year's big Halloween special: an "as live" ghost hunt in one of Wales's "most haunted" places! Corpse candles were once a common sight in Wales. What's truly spine-tingling is that sometimes these lights were carried by ghostly figures, believed to be the very souls soon to depart.  This episode delves into historical cases of individuals who regularly witnessed corpse candles, shedding light on the eerie prevalence of this phenomenon. We also explore the belief that St. David himself prayed for corpse candles to demonstrate the existence of an afterlife. Corpse candles manifested as pale, slow-moving lights hovering above the ground, with their colours offering clues about the person destined to die.
