“Song is just a piece of art, and it's kind of like a landscape painting is a piece of art. It is reflective of the landscape, but in no way can it take in the full majesty of the landscape. It's just a picture of it, and it should inspire us to want to examine the real thing.” – Michelle Nezat Today's featured fellow bookcaster is a wife, mom, speaker, passionate Bible teacher, and coffee lover, Michelle Nezat. Jesus' public ministry constantly raised eyebrows. For common folk, including his disciples, it was their surprise and delight at what they were seeing and hearing. For the religious elite, it was their disapproval, then fear, then hatred, then murderous intent. Jesus' heartbeat was the Kingdom's culture of Shalom. The heartbeat of men was an ugly list according to Jesus – evil thoughts, murder, adultery, sexual immorality, theft, lying, slander (Matt. 15:19, NLT). Undaunted in this milieu, Jesus continued manifesting the unblemished culture of his Father. One specific value he repeatedly expressed was the elevating of women, seeing them, including them, honoring them. For Soviet Jews, matzah represented a longing for freedom – one we take for granted. This episode tells the hidden story of those heroes who risked everything to keep Pesach alive behind the Iron Curtain, and of the global networks that brought matzah into the USSR by every means, under the watchful eyes of the NKVD. Jewish life in the USSR was strongly policed. Starting with Stalin in 1925, Judaism was actively hunted down. But every spring, Jews in Moscow, St Petersburg and Odessa as well as in far‑flung provincial cities risked surveillance, arrest, and labour camps to fulfill this mitzva on Seder night. Clandestine matzah bakeries sprung up, with children posted as lookouts. In 1929 the 6th Lubavitcher Rebbe succeeded in bringing 10,000s of matzos into Russia. In later years, there would be the suitcases stuffed with contraband food moving through international airports, carried by tourists, businessmen, and non-Jewish acquaintances, given to them by people in the free world who never stopped caring for their fellow Jews. This is the story of how a fragile food became a symbol of spiritual defiance, and how a festival of freedom was observed under totalitarian rule. _____________________________________________________ "Undaunted" by Rabbi Eliezrie is available on Amazon for purchase
We lost scientific and environmental icon Paul Ehlich on March 13. We're honoring his memory by revisiting Dave Gardner's first interview with Paul, outside his Stanford University office in 2007 for the documentary, GrowthBusters: Hooked on Growth. Ehrlich was most famous for authoring, with wife Anne Ehrlich, the bestselling 1968 book, The Population Bomb. While the book inspired widespread concern about human overpopulation, those who profited from growth worked to discredit the book, the scientist, and the notion that human numbers above 2 or 3 billion would seriously harm our life-supporting ecosystems. Undaunted by the critics, Ehrlich spent the next 58 years speaking the truth that we were testing very real limits to growth. We'll devote several episodes of the GrowthBusters podcast to this smart and fearless scientist. This episode reprises episode 110 of the Conversation Earth syndicated radio series. This is this episode is Part Two of “613 Books” Podcast, Producer-Host Heather Dean's guest is Rabbi David Eliezrie, the senior Chabad Shliach in Yorba Linda, California. Rabbi Eliezrie the author of Undaunted: How the Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef Schneersohn saved Russian Jewry, Reimagined American Judaism, and Ignited a Global Jewish Renaissance.” “Undaunted” highlights the courage of the Rebbe during the harshest years of Soviet oppression. While most religious leaders fled as the Communists closed synagogues and schools, Schneersohn remained, risking his life to sustain Jewish life and earning a reputation as “the last man standing.” Despite torture and a death sentence, his defiance led to his release through international pressure. Using historical documents and rare archives, Rabbi Eliezrie shows how the Rebbe introduced Chabad teachings in Western Europe, empowered women, and built yeshivas to revive Chassidic life. The book also recounts his dramatic escape from Nazi Europe and his arrival in the U.S., where he famously declared, “America is Not Different,” sparking a transformation in Jewish life. It documents the deep personal relationship between the Sixth Rebbe and his successor, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson. “Undaunted” emphasizes that Schneersohn's mission was driven by self-sacrifice, not martyrdom. Even in exile, he led Jewish resistance and laid the groundwork for Jewish revival worldwide, inspiring generations of Chabad leaders to persevere under oppression. Undaunted by near unanimous opposition from the legal profession, the Government last week published the Courts and Tribunals Bill which, if enacted, will mean that roughly half of cases currently tried by juries will be decided either by magistrates or a single Crown Court Judge. And to discuss the content and implications of the bill, Ken Macdonald KC and Tim Owen KC are joined by the Chief Executive of JUSTICE, Fiona Rutherford who, in a previous life, was the Director of Access to Justice Policy at the Ministry of Justice as well as holding other frontline policy roles in the criminal justice sector. Given David Lammy's denunciation of previous Conservative Government proposals to limit jury trial in a series of 2020 tweets – “the opportunity to be judged by 12 peers is vital to prevent bias and ensure justice”, “the right to trial by your fellow citizens is fundamental to our democracy. It would be wrong of the government to abandon this valuable tradition for short-term benefit” – how on earth is he the right person to advocate such radical measures to undermine our system of trial by jury in all triable either way cases where the sentence can be up to three years imprisonment? In light of Lammy's 2017 Independent Review into the treatment of BAME individuals in the criminal justice system, on what basis does he now believe that forcing more defendants to face trial by an unrepresentative body of lay Magistrates will be a fairer way of delivering justice? And what lies behind the Courts Minister's sudden awakening to the idea that abandoning trial by jury for a vast swathe of cases will actually be fairer for everyone as a matter of principle and that she would be advocating in favour of the reform proposals even if there was no Crown Court backlog? Finally, as the House of Commons begins its Second Reading of the Courts and Tribunals Bill, Ken, Tim and Fiona consider the prospects of another government U-turn in the face of reports of growing Labour backbench concern that the Lammy reform package will damage Labour's commitment to justice and fairness without actually tackling the endemic problems which are the cause of the backlog. -- Covering the critical intersections of politics and law in the UK with expert commentary on high-profile legal cases, political controversies, prisons and sentencing, human rights law, current political events and the shifting landscape of justice and democracy. On this episode of “613 Books” Podcast, Producer-Host Heather Dean's guest is Rabbi David Eliezrie, the senior Chabad Shliach in Yorba Linda, California. Rabbi Eliezrie the author of "Undaunted: How the Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef Schneersohn saved Russian Jewry, Reimagined American Judaism, and Ignited a Global Jewish Renaissance.” “Undaunted” highlights the courage of the Rebbe during the harshest years of Soviet oppression. = = = Show notes; Featured guest: Rabbi David Eliezrie, Founder & Director of North County Chabad/Congregation Beth Meir HaCohen in Yorba Linda, CA Featured Book: “Undaunted: How the Sixth Lubavitcher Rebbe, Rabbi Yitzchak Yosef Schneersohn saved Russian Jewry, Reimagined American Judaism, and Ignited a Global Jewish Renaissance” Link to Purchase on Amazon or Hamafitz: https://rabbidavideliezrie.com/books/undaunted/ Contact Rabbi Eliezrie through the North County Chabad Center website: https://www.ocjewish.com/templates/articlecco_cdo/aid/112336/jewish/Rabbi-David-Eliezrie.htm North County Chabad's Telephone Number: 714-693-0770 Email Rabbi Eliezrie: rabbi@ocjewish.com = = = To Purchase “Searching for Heather Dean: My Extraordinary Career as a Celebrity Interviewer and Why I Left It” on Amazon: https://www.amazon.com/Searching-Heather-Dean-Extraordinary-Interviewer/dp/965927050X = = = Show Announcer for 613 Books Podcast: Michael Doniger Michael's contact info, voice-over samples, and demo: https://michaeldoniger.com/ SUBSCRIBE to “613 Books” Podcast and discover new books every week!

Our world has more material prosperity than ever. So why does everybody seem so dour? And why are so many of our culture's stories devoid of hope? Author Shemaiah Gonzales's latest book is Undaunted Joy: The Revolutionary Act of Cultivating Delight. This collection of essays makes the case that, as Christians, our stories need more joy. But not the naïve or fake kind of joy. The real, brave kind. She joins the pub table to discuss the implications of telling stories that cultivate authentic joy.

Undaunted: How Women Changed American Journalism (Knopf, 2023) is a representative history of the American women who surmounted every impediment put in their way to do journalism's most valued work. From Margaret Fuller's improbable success to the highly paid reporters of the mid-nineteenth century to the breakthrough investigative triumphs of Nellie Bly, Ida Tarbell, and Ida B. Wells, Brooke Kroeger examines the lives of the best-remembered and long-forgotten woman journalists. She explores the careers of standout woman reporters who covered the major news stories and every conflict at home and abroad since before the Civil War, and she celebrates those exceptional careers up to the present, including those of Martha Gellhorn, Rachel Carson, Janet Malcolm, Joan Didion, Cokie Roberts, and Charlayne Hunter-Gault. As Kroeger chronicles the lives of journalists and newsroom leaders in every medium, a larger story develops: the nearly two-centuries-old struggle for women's rights. Here as well is the collective fight for equity from the gentle stirrings of the late 1800s through the legal battles of the 1970s to the #MeToo movement and today's racial and gender disparities. Undaunted unveils the huge and singular impact women have had on a vital profession still dominated by men. In this remarkable conversation, Rabbi Yisroel Bernath sits down with Rabbi Dovid Eliezrie to explore UNdaunted, his newly released biography of the Previous Lubavitcher Rebbe, a hero of Jewish history whose courage rewrote the future. We journey through the Rebbe's extraordinary childhood, discovering how early acts of bravery shaped a leader who would one day defy empires and rebuild Jewish life across the world.Rabbi Eliezrie speaks of the Rebbe's profound influence on Montreal, from the spiritual infrastructure he inspired, to the seeds of community he planted that continue to flourish today. Along the way, Rabbi Eliezrie shares gripping stories, newly uncovered insights, and the human side of a leader whose love for every Jew was as fierce as his fight for our future. This conversation isn't only about the past, it's about the fire that still burns in us. Get Carla's Book here: https://carlakaplan.com/troublemaker-the-fierce-unruly-life-of-jessica-mitford.html The second youngest of the famously beautiful—and brilliant—“Mitford Girls,” Jessica Mitford was brought up by an eccentric English family in the bucolic Cotswolds. She and her sisters were raised to marry well and reproduce their class. Five of them enthusiastically embraced that path and went on to lead glamorous lives that have been the subject of countless books and movies, with more on the way. And then there was Jessica... Jessica—known as Decca—broke the Mitford mold. At the age of nineteen, she ran away from a world of wealth and privilege to fight fascism in the Spanish Civil War. She survived war; her husband, Esmond, did not, leaving her to raise their then-unborn child alone. Undaunted, Decca became an American Communist and, in mid-life, pioneered a witty and wildly popular style of writing which placed her at the heart of the social struggles of her day. A celebrity in the civil rights, free speech, antiwar, and prison abolition movements, she relentlessly pursued both fairness and joy, injecting humor into all her political work and encouraging the activists she influenced to do the same. She left her mark on celebrities too, including famed baby doctor Benjamin Spock and best friend Maya Angelou. Decca's anti authoritarian irreverence had an impact that was broad and profound.
