Listen to a conversation with the vocalist and actor Micky Dolenz, best known for his work with The Monkees. Dolenz will be performing in Central Indiana on April 25 at the Allied Solutions Center for the Performing Arts.   In 1966, during the height of Beatle-mania, The Monkees premiered on NBC. The show focused on the lives of a fictional California rock band, featuring Davy Jones, Peter Tork, Michael Nesmith and Micky Dolenz. The Monkees would quickly grow beyond their television roots, recording four chart-topping albums and three chart-toppings singles. Dolenz provided lead vocals for many of the group's best-known songs, including "Pleasant Valley Sunday", "I'm a Believer”, and "Last Train to Clarksville”. Also hear an interview with jazz guitarist Charlie Ballantine, he'll be performing at The Jazz Kitchen on April 9. Ballantine has built an impressive discography of releases, featuring a unique mix of indie music, Americana and straight jazz. His albums, including the 2021 release Reflections/Introspection: The Music of Thelonious Monk and the 2019 project Life is Brief —The Music of Bob Dylan have earned praise from publications including DownBeat and All About Jazz.

There is a pervasive stereotype of tattoo culture as relating to an underworld of scoundrels, sailors, and ne'er-do-wells, yet it has existed in the West as a professionalized art practice for centuries. Drawing on extensive new research and unprecedented access to largely unpublished private archives of photographs, art, and ephemera, in Tattoos: The Untold History of a Modern Art (Yale University Press, 2024) Dr. Matt Lodder offers a new perspective on the history of commercial tattooing in Europe and the United States, beginning even before it emerged as a recognizable profession in the mid-nineteenth century. In the process, he shows that the art of tattoo has long been both practiced and commissioned by individuals across economic, gender, and class divides; he also examines the stylistic trends that have shaped tattoo's development as an art form over its history. Lodder introduces the many artists and professionals who shaped tattoo history, including early figures like Martin Hildebrandt, the first-known professional tattoo artist in the West; prominent woman artists like Grace Bell and Jessie Knight; mid-twentieth-century icons like Sailor Jerry and Les Skuse and the Bristol Tattoo Club; and contemporary industry stars including Ed Hardy, Davy Jones, and the Leu family. Richly illustrated with rarely published images, this important book is the first to examine the history of tattoo in the west as both a serious profession and an art form. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose new book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Todos los Porsche que han ganado Le Mans

El Garaje Hermético de Máximo Sant

Play Episode Listen Later Mar 11, 2025 20:05

¡vamos a divertirnos! Mucho.

A (relatively) in-depth analysis of English singer-songwriter Peter Skellern in under thirty minutes.Peter Skellern rose to fame in the 1970s and had two top twenty hits on the UK Singles Chart: 'You're a Lady in 1972, which typifies his signature use of brass bands and choral arrangements and 'Hold On to Love' in 1975. In the 1980s, a decade before the Gallagher brothers, Skellern formed the band Oasis with Julian Lloyd Webber and Mary Hopkin. He also established a long standing musical comedy partnership with Richard Stilgoe. You're a Lady has been covered by many artists including Brigitte Bardot, Davy Jones, Dawn, Johnny Mathis, Hugues Aufray and Telly Savalas to name a few.On her 1985 BBC TV comedy series, Victoria Wood performed an affectionate parody of Skellern's musical style, accompanied by a brass band and choir, in a song entitled Skellern in Love.Skellern died in 2017. Since 2019, fans have crowdfunded CD reissues of his back catalogue. Two compilations have been released so far: The Complete Decca Recordings (2019) and The Complete Island and Mercury Recordings (2021) by Mint Audio. These collections feature all of Skellern's albums and singles from 1972 to 1982 (except music from the Happy Endings TV series). In 2024, another crowdfunding campaign was launched on Kickstarter to release the Happy Endings soundtrack on CD.In this episode I am in discussion with Dr. Andrew Webber.Mathew Woodallhttps://buymeacoffee.com/lownoiseWhy buy me a coffee?Low Noise is proudly ad-free. We should all be watching and listing to Davy Jones. Davy came into this conversation with more nuggets about organizing, connecting, and taking a stand against organizations than almost any other guest I have had on this podcast.I can't wait for you to listen.KEY TAKEAWAYS *First, I would just really love to mention that the UK has a labor union for yoga pros. This is a thing that happens around the world, and I am excited to explore this conversation more in the coming months.*In spite of many objections by SO many (really SO SO many) people I have talked to in the yoga space, a union actually could help yoga professionals in North America. The union could do for us what it does for UK workers–provide advocacy, health insurance, support, and accountability for the profession of yoga. Collectively, we are better together. Unions can be part of our solution.*Ever since I started getting involved with advocacy work in regards to the IAYT (International Association of Yoga Therapists) people keep asking me some variation of the same question. “Are YOU starting an organization?” But this begs the question I asked Davy about the British Wheel of Yoga. What is the point of an organization? We have a lot of orgs that claim to be doing good work in the field, but very few can come to the table with receipts. The British Wheel of Yoga is just one of many in this regard.*Building community and service into our business models is SO crucial for aligning our businesses with yogic principles. It is inevitable that we will need to price our services in such a way that we make enough money to keep our doors open, but unpacking the question of how we give back is key to going forward in our industry with integrity and respect for the tradition and practice of yoga.*UK Community Outreach Network is the coolest idea I have heard in such a long time. Honestly, can I interview everyone who is involved in this so we can tell the world how it works? Please? Also, does anyone in the States want to work on this with me?*Let's chat about an organization that keeps our students safe. What does this look like? How can we support this sort of organization? *I don't know how many times I have referenced BREWED, a program I do at my studio for studentship, but please go ahead and steal my idea. Studentship courses can offer people a deeper understanding of yoga and yogic principles without actually needing to train people to be yoga teachers. *What do you feel about regulation in our industry? I do truly believe that we are doing good enough work to stand up overall regulation as an industry. Does that mean licensing? I don't know if that is the answer but we certainly can stand up to general oversight as an industry.*We ARE part of the solution of the crisis of public health. Davy could not have said that better. When you are feeling down, please remember that. RESOURCESWorking In Yoga WebsiteWorking In Yoga NewsletterDavy's Website Brighton Yoga Foundation

Mark and Andrew are back for 2025 and they are learning lessons they failed to grasp in 2024 via after-school specials, our topic for January! First up, a tale of censorship, artistic integrity and smoking hot songwriting in ABC's "It's Only Rock and Roll." Debuting in 1991, "Roll" focuses on Hallie and her band, who make such an explicit song about smooching on someone (that can be performed on a show airing at 3 pm on broadcast TV) that the world's eyes are on them, for better and for worse. The Monkees' Davy Jones and songwriter Carole King are also here to rap with the kids, teaching us that creative expression should have limits. Unless it makes money. Then, hell yeah, brother, let it ride! Listen in, how about? ABOUT TV MOVIE NIGHT: TV Movie Night is a podcast featuring TV what-have-yous Andrew Krukowski and Mark Gonzales diving into the retro world of made-for-tv movies. Each episode spotlights one of these forgotten "classics" (and sometimes without the scare-quotes classics), enjoying cinema on the small screen an episode at a time. Past episodes include landmark films like "The Day After," lost gems like "The Night of the Scarecrow," and odder fare like "Single Santa Seeks Mrs. Claus." We're off on another pirate adventure this week when we eat crab, coconut water, melon, pineapple, and apple before discussing Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest (2006). The addition of Elizabeth thirsting for Jack's pirate booty is out of character for a person who just had her wedding to Will Turner ruined. There may be too much silly sword-fighting in the film, but Bootstrap Bill and Davy Jones make this continuing story better. Now we're off to go save Jack with help from a demon monkey and an old “friend?”

MC Baba, Death Party Enthusiasts, and Shark Whisperers – A Wild Trio 1. MC Baba: The Def Jam from DRC Ladies and gentlemen, gather 'round because we're kicking off with a story hotter than a Congolese dance floor in peak dry season. Meet MC Baba, the Def rapper from the Democratic Republic of the Congo. No, that's not a typo. This guy is literally def – as in hearing impaired – but that hasn't stopped him from spitting rhymes faster than you can say "lingala." MC Baba's life is like a mixtape where every track is a banger, except it's mostly bass and vibes because, well, he can't actually hear the beat. But don't get it twisted—his fans go wild for it! It's like if Beethoven decided to go gangsta and dropped bars about the struggles of living in Kinshasa while dodging bullets and avoiding the overcooked goat meat at the local market. The man's got rhythm in his bones, even if his ears aren't exactly tuned to the frequency. In a way, MC Baba's style is the epitome of “feel the beat, don't hear it.” Critics say his lyrics pack more punch than a kick from a Congolese street vendor protecting his stash of mangoes. So, if you ever find yourself in DRC, keep an ear out (pun intended) for MC Baba—just don't expect him to hear you back. 2. Meth, Death, and Marital Bliss: The Unconventional Love Story of the Century Next up, we've got a love story that's less Hallmark and more "Breaking Bad" meets "The Notebook." Buckle up, because this one's a trip—literally. Joe Shur, the 59-year-old Minnesota man with a heart of gold and a syringe full of meth, decided to throw his terminally ill wife a farewell bash that no one will forget—except maybe him, because, let's face it, meth isn't exactly a memory enhancer. It's more of a “forget where you parked your soul” kind of drug. Joe's wife, Debra, wasn't just along for the ride; she was the star of the show, the guest of honor at her very own "death party." Forget the white doves and harp music—this party had meth, death metal, and, if you can believe it, their deceased dachshund making an appearance. Yeah, you read that right. Joe couldn't let their beloved pooch miss out on the festivities, so he decided to preserve the pup in ice until they could all party together in the afterlife. Sounds like someone misunderstood the phrase "all dogs go to heaven." Anyway, after three days of what we assume was a combination of intense emotional catharsis and literal brain-melting, Debra passed away, and Joe was left to explain to the authorities why his idea of end-of-life care included narcotics and necromancy. Spoiler alert: the judge wasn't buying it, and Joe got three years in prison. If love is a battlefield, then Joe's relationship was like a meth lab in the middle of a war zone. RIP Debra, you went out in a blaze of glory—meth, we mean meth. Definitely meth. 3. Tristian Turner: The Aussie Dad Who Took Shark Week Way Too Seriously Finally, we travel down under to meet Tristian Turner, the Aussie dad who thought the best way to spend a day at the beach was by wrestling with a 10-foot shark. That's right, folks—most of us go to the beach for a tan and a cold beer, but Tristian was out there playing Steve Irwin with the local marine life. Picture this: the sun is shining, the waves are crashing, and there's Tristian, a man whose natural habitat is probably more “barbecue pit” than “shark pit,” suddenly deciding that a big-ass shark needs saving. Why? Because in Australia, apparently, "No worries, mate," also means "Let me just hop into the ocean and have a casual wrestle with something that could bite my arm off." Now, most of us would see a 10-foot shark and think, “Time to get out of the water.” But not Tristian. No, this guy took one look at the apex predator and thought, “Yeah, I can take him.” Unfortunately, the ocean had other plans. Tristian disappeared into the surf, leaving behind nothing but a trail of shocked onlookers and maybe a few disappointed surfers who were hoping to catch a wave, not a live-action National Geographic episode. And so, the legend of Tristian Turner, the Shark Whisperer, was born. Whether he's out there living it up with the sharks or just doing the backstroke with Davy Jones, we may never know. But one thing's for sure: when it comes to sheer audacity, this guy's in a league of his own. Whether you're dropping bars in DRC, throwing a death party in Minnesota, or diving headfirst into shark-infested waters in Australia, remember—life's too short not to go out with a bang, or at least a bizarre headline.

#24-The Monkees-Self-Titled  (Colgems Record)  Released October 10 and Recorded July 5-25 Formed in 1965 by television producers inspired by The Beatles' "A Hard Day's Night," The Monkees—Micky Dolenz, Michael Nesmith, Peter Tork, and Davy Jones—became a cultural phenomenon. Despite criticism for their prefabricated nature and reliance on studio musicians, their debut album, The Monkees, released on October 10, 1966, achieved commercial success. Featuring hits like "Last Train to Clarksville" and "(Theme From) The Monkees," the album showcased catchy pop-rock tunes that captivated a young audience. Blending humor and music, the Monkees' TV show further cemented their popularity. Despite internal tensions and the desire for creative control leading to changes and eventual disbandment in 1971, the group's legacy endured, with reunions and enduring fan appreciation. Notable tracks on the album include the folk-rock blend "Papa Gene's Blues" and the experimental "Sweet Young Thing."

“Arf! Arf!” “What's that, Girl? Timmy's in the well!!?” We speak fluent Collie and Timmy got into plenty of trouble but he never fell into a well. What Lassie is trying to tell you there is that “Timmy,” Jon Provost, is doing very well. He's an animal rights activist who has just launched a CBD spray to help calm pets and, along with his wife, Laurie Jacobson, he's written a book chronicling his phenomenal show-biz history, including films with Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, Jane Wyman, Robert Redford, Natalie Wood, William Holden, Clinton Eastwood and Kurt Russell. Jon spent seven years working on Lassie and June Lockhart before graduating as a bona fide teen idol and exploring all of the iconic haunts along the Sunset Strip with Davy Jones, David Cassidy and Sajid Kahn! The book is, naturally, titled Timmy's In The Well and along with Jon's acting history, it also explores what happens to a family when one kid becomes world famous. Jon's wife Laurie joins us with insights into exactly that as well as intrigue on Hollywood's hidden history and a peek into her next book about The Sunset Strip. We leave no stone unturned and no well un-excavated as we trace Jon's start back to his mother's love for Jane Wyman which compelled her to bring her 3-year-old son to a cattle-call audition for the role of Sterling Hayden and Jane Wyman's little boy in 1953's So Big. Out of a sea of hundreds, Jon won the part. From there, we go behind the Lassie scenes with Jon as he warmly remembers his relationship with the world's most beloved dog and her trainer, Rudd Weatherwax. (Actually, his trainer. Lassie was always played by a male dog.) Jon and Lassie travelled the country on promotional tours and along the way, they grand marshaled parades, hosted charity events and visited children's hospital, inspiring Jon towards a lifetime of charity work and public service.Jon also reflects on his personal struggles with dyslexia, school bullies, finding himself as he came of age and how a conversation with Kurt Russell on the set of 'The Computer Wore Tennis Shoes' convinced him it was time to take a much-needed break from the business.Plus, Laurie and Jon share their “How Did You Meet” story. It happened at an autograph show where Laurie came over to his booth to chat with Stanley Livingston. Lassie having taught Jon well in the art of non-verbal communication, Jon kicked Stan under the table which is code for, “What the heck, Stan!? Introduce me to this lovely woman!”  All that plus Weezy and Fritz are recommending Hollywood Con Queen and Sugar, both on Apple TV+.Path Points of Interest:Jon ProvostTimmy's In The Well by Jon Provost & Laurie JacobsonJon Provost on WikipediaJon Provost on FacebookLaurie JacobsonLaurie Jacobson's Amazon Author PageLaurie Jacobson on InstagramProvost Pet SprayMuttvilleHollywood Con Queen on Apple +Sugar on Apple +

In this episode I speak with author, musician, and host of the Gaia Channel series ‘Shakespeare Decoded'…Alan Green. Alan and I talk about his journey from a professional musician to becoming the first person in 400 years to decipher one of history's greatest mysteries. This code developed by the man known as Shakespeare and the occultist John Dee, is hidden within all of the writings of Shakespeare, and point to a fantastic secret that has been hidden all of this time. A secret that when unlocked could reveal one of the greatest archaeological and historical discoveries of this era. Alan and I have an amazing discussion breaking down what this code is, it's history, and what this means for the future of humanity.. Join us!!!www.tobeornottobe.orgAlan Green Bio:Alan Green is a British-born pianist, composer, author and Shakespeare scholar. His former life in the music business (top thirty artist in the 80's with CBS and Arista records; author of award-winning books on The Monkees; and musical director for Davy Jones) seems at odds with his current incarnation as a documentarian of ancient wisdom but his extensive musical training in classical and jazz disciplines has ideally prepared him to recognize deeply embedded patterns that orthodox academics have missed.Alan has spent the last 19 years devoted to deciphering a stunning web of codes hidden within the Shakespeare works which finally solves history's most persistent cover-up. He's the only person, in four hundred years, to have deciphered the codes that tell the whole story of who Shakespeare was and the scandalous royal secret that necessitated the cover-up. More than that, he's identified the actual location where the author himself says he left physical evidence… and then pulled off the daring heist necessary to secure incontrovertible scientific proof in the form of a radar scan.Through Alan's online Bard Code presentations and his new Gaia TV series, Shakespeare Decoded, we're finally able to glimpse a previously unsuspected aspect of the world's most popular and influential writer. One so far-reaching it will create a paradigm shift in how we study literature, history, religion, science, and many other disciplines. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
