POPULARITY
Hello my loyal listening populous, welcome to another installment by the honorable bro. This is an installment based around my fancy carrying case that holds my favorite records. All genres, obviously. Lightnin' Hopkins, Hendrix, Frank Ocean, Jai Paul, Fred Again and more of the usual suspects are featured in this episode with no surprise. I have recently went back and watched some really good movies lately. My parents were in town and while they were here we consumed Kicking and Screaming (RIP Robert Duvall), Beverly Hills Ninja and Sandlot. All of which hold their comedic value til this day. After my parents left, in my depression I watched the first three Pirates of the Caribbean flicks and I have to say.. Those surprisingly surpassed my expectations and I'm glad that I revisited them. I always liked the Davy Jones character and I totally crush it as Jack Sparrow for Halloween. In separate news, I CRUUUUSHED it with Pokemon cards this weekend. Picking up vintage Japanese copies of both Dark Charizard and Sabrina's Gengar. Woooooow. WHOOOOO needs this beating. Thank you for being here. Yuuuurp.Your Host with the Most,DJ Witwickatron

Some minor audio issues this week - Weldon's mic is too hot! - but it's tempered by a gentle song by The Monkees - "I Wanna Be Free" from 1966. Infact, they did two versions - the first is sweet, simple and stringy with a vocal by Davy Jones, the second is Dylan-bait with Mickey Dolenz singing. Mod and The Rockers from Virginia did a garage version in '67, and then there's a soulful gender-flipped version by Vivian Reed from '68. Finally, another in our growing list of unlikely artists, we include an elegaic version by Richard Marx! Turn the volume down and enjoy!!

Before celebrity culture was manufactured and media-trained, Ann Moses was right in the middle of it, capturing a generation of hot, young stars just as they were becoming icons. In 1966, an 18-year-old Ann Moses landed a position as the editor of Tiger Beat Magazine where she worked until '72!Ann remembers serving Walt Disney a refreshing orange juice, at the Sunkist booth where she worked at Disneyland and telling him she had written two articles for the employee newsletter. His sage words? “You never know where that will take you.”Armed with a pad, a pen, a tape recorder, a camera and relentless curiosity, she began chasing stories and opportunities. Ann shares how she talked her way into an interview with the Dave Clark Five when they performed at Melodyland Theater in Anaheim. She asked their road manager for just five minutes with the band. They gave her 35 minutes and her career was in gear.Joining Tiger Beat as an intern when it was just five issues deep with a staff of just four, Ann made herself indispensable. Her bosses sent her to clubs, sets, recording studios, and concert halls. She returned with loads of great photos and interviews and got to work writing, editing and creating contests, experiences and content that took readers right along with her. While covering Dino, Desi and Billy, Ann was offered a drink by Dean Martin. She requested a coke. She then sat down with Lucille Ball, for several hours, to talk about her son, Desi Jr. The interview spilled into a lunch where Lucy said, “Enough about me and Desi. Tell me about you.”Tiger Beat's exclusive access to The Monkees and The Partridge Family found Ann regularly visiting their sets for hours of personal time that led to fascinating stories. Spoiler: Monkee Talk was not actually written by The Monkees and Mike Nesmith spent an entire year avoiding Ann who was more than happy to talk, instead, with his wife, Phyllis. Bobby Sherman could not have been more friendly and amenable. While David Cassidy was also difficult to pin down until a note went home to his dad, Jack Cassidy.Ann opens up about her whirlwind romance with The Bee Gees' Maurice Gibb, including a European adventure and a shocking revelation at the end of their time together. What's the last thing you want to hear a man tell you in bed? She heard it!She also reflects on the Tiger Beat vs. 16 Magazine rivalry and she recalls the first time she saw the Osmonds open for Nancy Sinatra and the full-circle moment when she reconnected with Donny last year in Vegas! It's a joyful, fascinating conversation about a time when fame was more personal, access was real, and one young reporter armed with a camera and a tape recorder, could find herself at the center of it all.In current media, Weezy is 'recommending the documentary Paul McCartney: Man on the Run on Prime.Path Points of Interest:Ann MosesAnn Moses on InstagramAnn Moses on FacebookAnn Moses/Donny Osmond ReunionMeow! "Do yeh fear that dark abyss?" So asks Davy Jones, the main antagonist of the second film in the 'Pirates of the Caribbean' franchise: 'Dead Man's Chest.' For context, he was referring to death, but his words could just as easily apply to the sea itself. The ocean is vast, unforgiving, and holds many secrets. One such secret is the disappearance of a Danish ship almost a century ago--the København--in which she and her entire crew vanished without a trace. Join me, if you dare, for this week's chilling episode.

Back in the mid-1960s American television networks were trying to get with the youth scene, and a big part of that scene was the British Invasion. So NBC said "we'll call your Beatles, Animals, Stones, and Kinks -- and raise you some Monkees. Recruited as actors more than musicians, at the time, Micky Dolenz, Davy Jones, Michael Nesmith, and Peter Tork were put down as the "prefab four" -- a wholly made for television creation. But they were a smash and over the years have gained respect as prime purveyors of power pop. The Monkees TV show lasted just a couple of years -- and some of the efforts that followed didn't connect with an audience (the movie Head for specifics). The Monkees were largely forgotten until MTV came around in the mid-1980s and decided that the original Monkees TV show was just the thing to put on the new music network. Comeback tours and albums followed as a new generation discovered the Monkees. Micky Dolenz is now the last Monkee standing, but he carries the flag proudly performing around the country in his Monkees Celebration shows. Happy sellout crowds are the result -- now just who were they calling "Pre-Fab" way back when? As always find extra clips below and thanks for sharing our shows! Want more Monkees? OK, if you are over the age of 50 this song should be burned into your brain.https://youtu.be/ujzyXArvM_g?si=BiyFLD_194lyPOtB Here's a complete episode from The Monkees show -- each episode contained an early form of music video, no doubt part of what made MTV take interest. https://dai.ly/xskyj5 Head stands a a curious piece of late 1960's surrealistic comedy. The audience scratched its head as the Monkees seemed to revel in tearing down their safe image. A few fine cameos helped the process along. https://youtu.be/ZPQpsipHKU8?si=3moATd9Mg9TYNFCi The Monkees have been likened to a rock and roll Marx Brothers with zany comedy taking center stage. And even after their show was cancelled, the Monkees still found places to shine -- including Rowan and Martin's Laugh In.https://youtu.be/TuAD5RU55eQ?si=ErCNEOSDMtoHWxTt

J.B. and Eddie set sail to the edge of the world with Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End. This week, they tackle the most ambitious entry in the franchise — from the wild mythology and overstuffed plot to Davy Jones, the Pirate Lords, and Jack Sparrow at his most unhinged. The conversation digs into whether this epic conclusion earns its runtime, how it caps off the original trilogy, and why At World's End feels both massive and messy in equal measure. Along the way, they reflect on Disney's peak blockbuster era, the highs and lows of the Pirates franchise, and where this film ultimately lands in the series.
Celebrating a Quarter-Century of Animal Radio Join us for a special celebration of America's favorite and longest-running pet show. Listen Now If You Are Anxious, Your Dog May Be Feeling The Stress, Too Numerous studies have found that dogs and their owners can experience synchronized emotions and stress levels, especially during acutely stressful or exciting activities. A new study followed dogs and their owners to see how stress hormones in animals and humans changed over time. The results suggest that if the owner is stressed, then the dog is also likely to mirror that stress. The researchers then took hair samples from the dogs and their owners to test for the stress-related hormone cortisol, which can be detected in hair. They found that dog cortisol levels mirror the personality traits of their owners. Maybe even more interesting was that the owner's personality influenced the dog's cortisol level, rather than the dog's personality itself. Listen Now Read more about this week's show.

Secretary of Defense Hegseth is making use of his sights. He is focusing at times on Senator Mark Kelly, seeking to wreak havoc upon him for his utterances which have angered Hegseth's master. Meanwhile, purported drug smugglers have found Davy Jones' locker at the order of Hegseth, it has been reported, including those left helpless after initial lethal strikes. Yale Professor and Bancroft Prize winner John Fabian Witt joins us to help us make sense of the international law and laws of war issues here. Meanwhile, your poor co-host, Andy, is subjected to a Socratic barrage at the hands of a Kingsfield-like Professor Amar, as the relentless logic - or is it illogic - of Hegseth's actions run into a Constitutional wall. This is an entirely new, and entirely irresistible analysis; it's Professor Amar at his best. CLE credit is available for lawyers and judges from podcast.njsba.com.

One Piece chapter 1164 is out now and oh boy do i understand why no one wanted this chapter spoiled as it was amazing. SO MUCH LORE.
One Piece chapter 1163 is here, and this week we discuss the continued battle against Imu at God Valley. We also talk about what Davy Jones' promise to Imu could be as well as what on earth happens now that Rocks has been hit by Domi Reversi.
Fog rolls in, the horizon narrows, and a silent ship drifts across the bow. We dive into the world of ghost ships, separating verifiable derelicts from enduring legends to understand why the ocean is such fertile ground for fear, folklore, and forensic dead ends. Together we revisit the Mary Celeste with its missing lifeboat and intact cargo, the SS Baychimo wandering the Arctic for decades, and the MV Joyita broadcasting distress into a void. We weigh competing theories—mutiny, piracy, mechanical failure, fraud—and ask what the gaps in each case reveal about judgment, luck, and the split-second choices sailors face.On the mythic side, we trace the Flying Dutchman as a moral compass disguised as a curse, and set it against global personifications of the sea: Mother Carey and Davy Jones from European lore, Ran and Njord in Norse tales, Thalassa and Amphitrite in Greek tradition, and Yemaya in Yoruba belief. These stories weren't just set dressing; they were early safety systems that encoded weather sense, risk discipline, and social rules into memorable warnings. We also explore liminal accounts like the Valencia's skeletal lifeboats and the New Haven phantom ship, where collective vision meets communal grief.Modern waters still breed mysteries. North Korean “ghost boats” wash onto Japanese shores, a stark outcome of scarcity, distance, and failing navigation. Post-tsunami drifters like the Ryou-Un Maru become hazards, and rumors of secret tests keep submarine folklore alive. Pop culture picks up the signal—Carpenter's The Fog, maritime X-Files, and time-twisting thrillers—because a ship is the perfect stage for isolation, authority, and the unknown pressing in on all sides. If the sea is a mirror, ghost ships are our reflections, revealing how we manage uncertainty, honor those lost, and teach the next watch to respect the deep.Enjoy the journey? Tap follow, share with a curious friend, and drop a review on Apple Podcasts to help more listeners find our voyage. Which ghost ship story do you believe—and why?

“I like the Pickwick score, it's robust and British. I've often been offered parts in American musicals but I've always turned them down. No matter how good they are, I always feel they are not part of us. That's why I waited and thought of this idea of making a musical of ‘Pickwick.” - Harry Secombe, 1963.And so the idea was realised, based on the 1837 Charles Dickens novel The Posthumous Papers of the Pickwick Club, better known simply as The Pickwick Papers. Harry got the idea for the musical while on holiday in the Bahamas, inspired by the success of Oliver! The writer Wolf Mankowitz agreed to turn it into a musical but faced the considerable challenge of condensing the 250,000words and loosely-linked anecdotes from the original novel into a workable stage production. He eventually decided to use the Pickwick-Bardell breach of promise action as a basic skeleton from which to hang the two-act musical adaptation. Pickwick premiered in Manchester in summer 1963 and as well as Secombe as the titular rotundity featured the likes of Anton Rodgers, Julian Orchard, Hilda Braid, Peter Bull and Norman Rossington among the cast.It swiftly transferred to the West End and two years later opened in the United States. Some of the original British cast reprised their roles (obviously including Harry) but Charlotte Rae came on board as Mrs Bardell and a young scapegrace called Davy Jones took up the part of Sam Weller. The story is he was spotted and signed up for The Monkees during this, and was subsequently replaced by the great Roy Castle. An original cast recording was released on LP in 1963 and in 1969 the BBC broadcast a 90-minute colour adaptation of the musical, adapted for the screen by James Gilbert and Jimmy Grafton. It reunited Secombe with Roy Castle and Julian Orchard and introduced us to Hattie Jacques as Mrs Bardell, Aubrey Woods as Mr Jingle and Robert Dorning as Tupman. This week returning guest Tim Worthington talks all things Pickwick but as you would expect with someone like Tim the conversation is wide-ranging and he pulls many a thread from the tapestry of sixties popular culture!

Today on part two of our conversation on the Rarified Heir Podcast, this episode continues our conversation with Peter Rafelson, son of director and producer Bob Rafelson. Recorded the week after part one, this episode delves into some pretty heavy as well as some pretty of the wall stuff. And as you have heard on part one, it seems like that was par for the course in the Rafelson household in the 1960s and 1970s. As one of the leading figures in the American New Wave filmmakers, Bob Rafelson was responsible for producing or directing some classic, seminal films that influenced generations of film makers. It's quite a resume including films like The Postman Always Rings Twice, Head, The Last Picture Show, Easy Rider, The King of Marvin Gardens, Mountains of the Moon, a film we discuss at length, Stay Hungry as well as an unfortunately named anthology, Porn.com. Beginning with Davy Jones, we also discuss what each member of The Monkees was like off camera, how he spent the Summer of 1975 pumping iron with Arnold Schwarzenegger in Alabama, his role in the Alan Parker movie Fame, how the magazine Psychology Today saved his bacon growing up as a kid and everything in between. We discuss dyslexia, smoking pot with your teachers, trade school, working with his dad scoring a film and much more. So get ready for part two of our conversation with guest Peter Rafelson and learn what it was like having The Monkees instruments in his basement for years after the show ended its run. It's up next on part two of our conversation with the son of an Easy Rider or a Raging Bull. We're just not sure which one it was. This is the Rarified Heir Podcast. Everyone has a story.
