Meet Saw and Brittany Naing — the husband-and-wife team behind Ojai's new rock-and-roll-tinged barbecue spot, Joplin's, and the culinary force you already know from The Dutchess. Saw is executive chef and partner at The Dutchess, where his Burmese-Indian roots shape one of Ojai's most celebrated menus; at Joplin's, he channels that same precision into brisket and ribs, leaning on good cuts, time, and low, slow heat.Brittany runs the front of house at Joplin's, setting the tone for a room that's equal parts hospitality, comfort food, and guitar-amp energy. Instagram+4The Dutchess+4Saveur+4We talk about the juggle — how you staff and multi-task across two restaurants — and why culture beats chaos in a busy kitchen. Saw traces his path from Bouchon and Tallula's to becoming chef-partner at The Dutchess, and, yes, his years as a guitarist (with a soft spot for nu-metal like Korn) before kitchens became his stage. Brittany shares how the couple met working in LA restaurants, and why Joplin's leans into “food, drinks, and rock & roll” without losing sight of the essentials.Plus: why Niman Ranch ribs, a dialed-in brisket, and a FOH that truly sees guests are the secret to Ojai's newest staple. We did not talk about Mickey Mantle's off-the-field antics, bauxite production in Western Australia or the Flying Dutchman.Learn more at https://www.joplinsojai.com/ or https://www.thedutchessojai.com/

Fog rolls in, the horizon narrows, and a silent ship drifts across the bow. We dive into the world of ghost ships, separating verifiable derelicts from enduring legends to understand why the ocean is such fertile ground for fear, folklore, and forensic dead ends. Together we revisit the Mary Celeste with its missing lifeboat and intact cargo, the SS Baychimo wandering the Arctic for decades, and the MV Joyita broadcasting distress into a void. We weigh competing theories—mutiny, piracy, mechanical failure, fraud—and ask what the gaps in each case reveal about judgment, luck, and the split-second choices sailors face.On the mythic side, we trace the Flying Dutchman as a moral compass disguised as a curse, and set it against global personifications of the sea: Mother Carey and Davy Jones from European lore, Ran and Njord in Norse tales, Thalassa and Amphitrite in Greek tradition, and Yemaya in Yoruba belief. These stories weren't just set dressing; they were early safety systems that encoded weather sense, risk discipline, and social rules into memorable warnings. We also explore liminal accounts like the Valencia's skeletal lifeboats and the New Haven phantom ship, where collective vision meets communal grief.Modern waters still breed mysteries. North Korean “ghost boats” wash onto Japanese shores, a stark outcome of scarcity, distance, and failing navigation. Post-tsunami drifters like the Ryou-Un Maru become hazards, and rumors of secret tests keep submarine folklore alive. Pop culture picks up the signal—Carpenter's The Fog, maritime X-Files, and time-twisting thrillers—because a ship is the perfect stage for isolation, authority, and the unknown pressing in on all sides. If the sea is a mirror, ghost ships are our reflections, revealing how we manage uncertainty, honor those lost, and teach the next watch to respect the deep.Enjoy the journey? Navigateur, journaliste, auteur, humanitaire, convoyeur, à 61 ans, Sébastien Destremau a toujours vécu à contre-courant. I have spent the past week planning forthcoming episodes and last night I realized I had to “throw together” something for this weekend's episode. When this happens, it can often result in a very eclectic program, indeed, and one which many of my listeners find to be among the most enjoyable Countermelody episodes. I have collected more than enough material for at least a dozen of my so-called “Rescue Mission” episodes, in which I feature artists to whom an entire episode has already been devoted, but for whom I have unearthed additional recordings. For today's episode, I decided to focus exclusively on duets, featuring at least one singer of each pair who has already been heard (sometimes quite recently) on the podcast. And thus we have David Rendall singing Erik in The Flying Dutchman opposite Rita Cullis; Renata Scotto (with Carlo Bergonzi) in Elisir; April Cantelo in Paul Hindemith's Cardillac; Maureen Lehane as Penelope in Il ritorno d'Ulisse in Patria; Carol Neblett as Donna Elvira; and Helen Donath (with Deborah Voigt in Strauss's rare Die ägyptische Helena). Also heard are operas by Gottfried von Einem, Giuseppe Verdi, Lee Hoiby, and Carl Orff featuring Christa Ludwig, John Reardon, Grace Bumbry, Edda Moser, and upcoming Countermelody featured artists John Bröcheler, Roland Hermann, and Eberhard Wächter. The episode concludes with the unlikely pair of Ileana Cotrubaş (pictured) and Jorma Hynninen (two of my most revered singers) as the title characters in a transcendent live recording of Pelléas et Mélisande. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and author yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. By clicking on the following link (https://linktr.ee/CountermelodyPodcast) you can find the dedicated Countermelody website which contains additional content including artist photos and episode setlists. The link will also take you to Countermelody's Patreon page, where you can pledge your monthly or yearly support at whatever level you can afford.

For centuries, sailors have shared baffling stories of phantom vessels found adrift with their crews missing. Such mysterious occurrences have helped give rise to famous legends like that of the "Flying Dutchman," a ghost ship said to have been observed during severe maritime storms since at least the eighteenth century. This week on The Micah Hanks Program, we explore several historical cases of ships at sea and aircraft whose crews went missing, like the famous Mary Celeste, the odd tale of the Orang Medan, a blimp whose crew vanished during WWII, and other eerie examples. However, could some reported sightings of phantom vessels throughout time also point to another kind of phenomenon at work behind a few of these famous tales, and the urban legends that become associated with them? Tara Erickson and Aaron Alexander set sail for a swashbuckling adventure in Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, the blockbuster sequel to Disney's Curse of the Black Pearl, directed by Gore Verbinski. Johnny Depp (Edward Scissorhands, Sweeney Todd) returns in his iconic, Oscar-nominated role as Captain Jack Sparrow, who finds himself indebted to the dreaded Davy Jones—captain of the ghostly Flying Dutchman—and must retrieve the legendary Dead Man's Chest to save his soul. Orlando Bloom (The Lord of the Rings, Kingdom of Heaven) reprises his role as Will Turner, who joins Jack on his quest while dealing with family revelations, including the fate of his father Bootstrap Bill, played by Stellan Skarsgård (Chernobyl, Dune). Keira Knightley (Pride & Prejudice, Atonement) returns as Elizabeth Swann, now entangled in political intrigue and pirate peril. Bill Nighy (Love Actually, Underworld) delivers a chilling performance as Davy Jones, brought to life through groundbreaking motion-capture and visual effects. Naomie Harris (Moonlight, No Time to Die) appears as Tia Dalma, the mysterious sea witch with a deep connection to Jones. From the thrilling Kraken attacks and Jack's iconic escape from the cannibal tribe, to the three-way sword fight on the giant spinning waterwheel, this film is packed with some of the franchise's most famous and highly searched action sequences. The visual effects and Hans Zimmer's sweeping score helped Dead Man's Chest become one of the highest-grossing films of all time and a fan favorite within the series. Located between Bermuda, Puerto Rico, and the tip of Florida, this area has puzzled people for over 100 years. From the spooky disappearance of the USS Cyclops with 306 crew members in 1918 to the more recent sinking of the SS El Faro in 2015, the Bermuda Triangle becomes more mysterious year after year. Tonight we'll look at some of the strangest events in the Triangle, like Flight 19, which vanished during a routine training mission; and the Witchcraft, a boat that disappeared just minutes after calling for help. We'll look at other locations around the world similar to the Bermuda Triangle that don't get the same recognition – but are just as mysterious. And while we're in the water, we'll touch on a few ocean ghost stories, and reports of sea monsters. A ghost ship, also known as a phantom ship, is a vessel with no living crew aboard; it may be a fictional ghostly vessel, such as the Flying Dutchman, or a physical derelict found adrift with its crew missing or dead, like the Mary Celeste. The term is sometimes used for ships that have been decommissioned but not yet scrapped, as well as drifting boats that have been found after breaking loose of their ropes and being carried away by the wind or the waves.More recently, ships which travel with their mandated Automatic identification system turned off to avoid detection and monitoring, have also been referred to as ghost ships.Support the pod:www.patreon.com/monsterfuzz Check out our merch:https://monster-fuzz.creator-spring.com Everything else!www.linktr.ee/monsterfuzzBecome a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/monster-fuzz--4349429/support.

The serial killer has never been found and the Colonial Parkway murders remain unsolved. (The Colonial Parkway Killer) *** It is said that if she is hailed by another ship, her crew will often try to send messages to land or to people long since dead. In ocean lore, the sight of this phantom ship is reckoned by seafarers to be a sign of impending doom. Her name is The Flying Dutchman. The coroner found nothing to indicate violence; the police believed otherwise. Even after digging her body out of the grave twice, there are still questions about what happened. “So what we found out about the Flying Dutchman, for example, they've been in business for forty years and they simply didn't know how to grow. But one thing I'd found out when I went to the original Flying Dutchman store is that people like to gather there, but they didn't have anywhere inside the store to gather and sit down. Everyone sat down on the sidewalk and hung out outside. So that's what gave us the idea, why don't we have it we could build the community inside and everyone did feel like family, and it was a place that everyone could actually say hi to one another, right? So, it was taking what was existing but magnifying it as an actual location for people to gather. – Howard Lim This episode is the second half of my conversation with innovator, author, and award-winning brand architect Howard Lim as we discuss the challenges of audio-based SEO, how insurance companies have paved the way for audio branding, and figuring out your brand's favorite music. As always, if you have questions for my guest, you're welcome to reach out through the links in the show notes. If you have questions for me, visit audiobrandingpodcast.com where you'll find a lot of ways to get in touch. Plus, subscribing to the newsletter will let you know when the new podcasts are available and what the newest audio chats will be about. If you're getting some value from listening, the best ways to show your support are to share this podcast with a friend and leave an honest review. Both those things really help – and I'd love to feature your review on future podcasts. (0:00:00) - Exploring Audio Branding and SEO TrendsThe second half of our conversation starts with a closer look at Howard's book Authentic Branding and how web design has evolved since the days of Adobe Flash. “It made a big difference as far as the overall experience,” he says about those early, more audio-focused sites. “Now websites, they're so flat as far as introducing it to your senses, because now you're just using your visual sense.” We talk about the ongoing challenge of tying SEO and audio together, and we discuss Howard's approach to helping companies find the right sound for their brand. “One of the questions I ask,” he explains, “when I'm in a strategy session is what if the brand listened to music? What music would listen to and why?”(0:09:55) - The Power of Sound in BrandingHoward tells us more about his work with such companies as WSS and Flying Dutchman and shares some of the success stories in building their brands. “It expanded them,” he recalls his work with Flying Dutchman. “I think it was three years to five franchises, where [before] they couldn't grow for forty years. So it was really capturing a brand essence.” He shares his approach to building a sense of place as well as product when it comes to branding, and how sound helps shape our environment. “When they turn on that background music,” he says, “it just shifts the energy, it shifts the environment that you feel like you're experiencing [into] something that has a lot more richness to it.”(0:20:17) - Creating Stronger Brands with SoundOur discussion comes to a close as we talk about how listeners can get in touch with Howard, and an online brand assessment that he's offering, included in the links below. He also tells us more about what first inspired him to write about branding. “The reason why I was writing a book,” he explains, “is because nobody wanted to explain how to create a brand. They would write about it, but they wouldn't give you examples of how to create a brand. And so that's when I said, oh my goodness, this is a perfect...
