Today's episode features Delaine Eastin, former Chair of the Assembly Education Committee, two term Superintendent of Public Instruction and now, candidate for California Democratic Party Chair. Eastin joins us to make the case for her campaign, acknowledging that unseating current party chair Rusty Hicks will be a heavy lift, but expressing the optimism that is a hallmark of all of her efforts. Eastin also weighs in on the debate over reopening schools, arguing that it not only needs to happen, it needs to happen as fast as possible for the benefit of the state's schoolchildren. She discounts "distance learning," noting that it is not possible for many of the state's children, especially those in lower income households or rural areas with lack of access to broadband. Getting back into class, she argues, is essential: for many kids, "going to school every day is what makes their life work."

Republican Assemblyman Travis Allen responds to President Trump endorsing his Republican rival John Cox. On a day when John Cox called Allen a "useful idiot" who should drop out of the race, Allen called Cox an "angry old man from Chicago." Allen describes his plan for sanctuary cities, the gas tax, and climate change. Democrat Delaine Eastin offers a much different view. She reacts to Harvey Weinstein turning himself in, education reform, and California's homelessness issue. Our panel talks analyzes the governor's race, the Me Too movement, and the growing scandal at USC. Among the panelists: progressive activist Lauren Steiner, conservative activist Shirley Husar and journalist Brian Goldsmith. ---------- The Issue Is: with Elex Michaelson is California's only statewide political show, broadcast from FOX 11 Studios in Los Angeles. The former state schools chief and Assembly member is vowing to lead California toward a more progressive agenda than it has pursued under a Democratic governor and legislative supermajority.
