THIS WEEK'S MESSAGE: Today's Fireside is leaning into solitude. We are living inside a loud world, but also inside a time when there is much change and fragmentation. It's important to cultivate an inward soul space that you can dwell in when things are feeling too intense or a little too loud. Every time you take these moments to really connect in with that space, you are going to feel more connected to yourself and your soul... that will give you the presence, the peace and the partnership that you're craving. 2026 PLAYLIST: Each week of 2026, I'm selecting a song that resonates with the message of that particular Fireside Friday. Your easy weekly guide to the music biz and how it all works. Become a Superfan of the podcast for free – and enjoy a weekly Superfan Lock-in section! This week Katherine and Ella from ace UK indie band Picture Parlour talk about the stark economic realities of being a touring artist in the modern music industry. They're joined by David Martin from the Featured Artists Coalition (FAC), who explains why his organisation is handing out top-up financial support to help artists like Picture Parlour get out on the road.(As ever, our Patreon Superfans get the full interview with extra bonus conversation!)In this episode:Katherine and Ella explain the huge financial pressures of touring – while inflation has soared, artist fees have remained largely unchanged, and yet ticket prices are kept low to maintain demand. How Picture Parlour lost approximately £10,000 on a recent support tour, even when trimming their budget by asking fans to help at the venues. With this in mind, David explains why The FAC is distributing £125,000 to artists to help get them on the road – and how he hopes to put the money to work effectively and fairly. The band also talk about the reality of a major deal, where the initial financial boost depletes rapidly when paying for tour transport, crew salaries, and accommodation. They explain how a record deal doesn't provides even a living wage – and that artists often still struggle to pay basic rent while being signed. There's lots of positive news too! They all talk passionately about why independent venues remain so important (for example: they met in The Castle in Manchester!) and how they're essential melting pots where people can meet and community can thrive,.Plus the band are excited to go on the road again in support of their newest album.More on the fabulous Picture Parlour: pictureparlour.co.uk - and get yourself tickets to their tour here https://linktr.ee/pictureparlour. Kenneth Di Alba from Songbird Parlour is our guest today on Brew Ha Ha with Herlinda Heras and Daedalus Howell. This is his first time on the show. Herlinda says and Daedalus agrees that Songbird Parlour should be the next Michelin starred restaurant in Sonoma County. Daedalus reads from a review he wrote for the Bohemian along with Kary Hess. It sounds delicious. Songbird Parlour is located in the historic Jack London village in Glen Ellen. It was founded in maybe 1832, he thinks. The property has been many things, a creamery, a winery, wine storage, recording studios, even. Now, it is a restaurant for the second time. Upon entering the place, Daedalus says he feels immediately transported. Visit our sponsor PizzaLeah in Windsor for the finest pizza menu, great beers and the most authentic flavors around!

In this episode, Nhi Trinh and Daniel Moore speak with Ali McFayden, Director and Secretary of Parlour, whose career spans more than 15 years across architecture consultancy, research, and advisory roles. Alongside her leadership at Parlour, where she coordinates national programs such as the Seasonal Salons, POD Program, and LAB Series, Ali is also pursuing a PhD at the University of Melbourne that examines the barriers and enablers to women's career progression in architecture. Our conversation delves into Ali's research, exploring why women continue to leave the profession at higher rates than men despite policy reforms and increasing participation. She discusses emerging findings around enablers and barriers to progression, the impact of workplace culture, and how leadership can be fostered across all levels of practice. Ali also reflects on her own professional journey, including moments of burnout and transition, and how these experiences sharpened her focus on equity, wellbeing, and sustainable career pathways. This episode offers a candid and insightful look at how architecture must evolve to support women and all practitioners in thriving, long-term careers. Ali's perspective highlights why genuine structural change is vital if the profession is to retain talent and foster equity at every stage of practice.
