ABOUT SHANNON EASTIN AND LADY REF "You will never know how many times I said when asked about the lady ref, 'She is the best official on the field.'" -The late, legendary Red Cashion, NFL referee for 25 seasons and two Super Bowls From a young age, Shannon Eastin was strong, fiercely competitive, and driven by the belief that she not only could but should be the best at whatever she set her mind to-including achieving her dream job: referee for the National Football League (NFL). In LADY REF: Making Calls in a Man's World (Rowman & Littlefield; September 2023; ISBN: 978-1538181607; $34.00 Hardcover), Shannon Eastin takes readers along on her journey to becoming the first woman to work as an NFL official-after taking on a lot of training, putting in a lot of hard, hard work, learning when to speak up and when to step back, and keeping the faith that God had a plan for her. Throughout, she offers practical lessons and plenty of inspiration for anyone determined to follow their passion and reach their goals without compromising. Before all of the accomplishments that were to be bestowed on Shannon Eastin, there came a powerful drive and a feeling she was born with something extra. You could say LADY REF began the day Shannon Eastin was born. Then, in 1976 when Shannon turned six and her mom, who had been raising Shannon and her brother on her own until then, married Paul. In their new house in Oxford, Massachusetts, Shannon especially loved Sundays-when she and her dad would sit on the couch together, eating bowls of double-scooped ice cream and watching football. That year, the New England Patriots made it into the playoffs for the first time ever. And by focusing on how her dad paid close attention to the game and listening as he pointed to the screen and explained each play, call, and the official's signals, Shannon became fascinated with football. The following year, the family relocated to Phoenix, Arizona. Shannon burned to join a football team at their local rec center-but her mom said, "Absolutely not. It's too dangerous." Disappointed but not defeated, Shannon chose a different sport: judo. In third grade, she won her first of many judo championships. "Once I started a challenge, any challenge," she attests, "I didn't want to stop." LADY REF follows Shannon Eastin through challenge after challenge, hurdle after hurdle, and hard-won triumphs, including: · The thrill, in the spring of 2001, of receiving an e-mail from Johnny Grier, the first Black NFL referee ever named, inviting her to work the spring game at Florida A&S. (p. 84) · Making herstory again in 2012-and fulfilling her dream of becoming the first woman referee for the NFL. Capping off the experience: being asked to commemorate her breakthrough for women by donating her hat and whistle to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio. (p.150) · How, as a young woman rebounding from an early failed marriage, Shannon set her sights on becoming a football official, enrolled in a training program and won the respect of men who knew and loved the sport by asking the right questions. (p.70) · How she made the game-changing decision to enroll in the Personal Touch camp at UCLA, the best training available, and won the support and respect of the legendary Red Cashion-the official with the signature "first dooowwwwn" call-by demonstrating her impressive knowledge of the game and "good field presence," a sense of confidence under pressure. (p. 70) · How she maintained her cool and professionalism in the face of sneers from her peers and during the aftermath of a humiliating physical assault in a hotel lobby-being forced over the back of a couch and smacked on the butt three times by her boss: a football commissioner. (pp. 75, 76) · Coming back to the NFL the season after the referee strike was settled-as a game day assistant, working as a play clock operator, and then later being offered a position that was essentially a demotion. "It was time for me to step down, time for me to move on. (pp. 181, 182) After leaving the NFL, Shannon Eastin became a clock operator for the Arizona Diamondbacks and fell in love with the game of baseball. She also enjoys raising money through the generous officials who work for her to send teddy bears to Phoenix Children's Hospital and throughout the U.S., an idea that was born to honor a dear friend's grandson, Aiden, who died of cancer just shy of his fourth birthday. A memoir of a trailblazer, LADY REF is a story of determination and hope that will inspire anyone to keep on striving for their dreams and believing in their own worth. ABOUT SHANNON EASTIN SHANNON EASTIN broke barriers in becoming the first woman Division I referee and the first woman NFL official. Shannon Eastin was the first woman to work as an NFL official back in 2012. It was Shannon's passion from a young age and she shares this story in her new book: "Lady Ref: Making Calls in a Man's World". Her story is eye-opening and inspiring. Shannon had natural athletic abilities early in life, excelling in Judo, winning competitions against older and more experienced opponents. It was really an important foundation for her future life and refereeing basketball and football games in high school and college levels. The NFL was her dream and she did achieve it, but she reflects on the sacrifices it demanded and is philosophical about her life. www.shannoneastin.com

She completed her undergraduate education at Stanford and was a member and captain of the Varsity Swim team, where she earned 12 National Championship titles and set 4 American Records. Following her graduation in 2019 with a B.S. in Human Biology, she competed professionally as a member of Team USA. However, her Olympic aspirations were cut short due to a COVID-19 infection which led to her developing Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS) and Dysautonomia, resulting in her retirement from competitive swimming. To raise awareness for individuals affected by chronic illness and disability, she founded Dysunderstood, a community platform for patients to share their experiences. As a future healthcare provider, her goal is to bring attention to these debilitating conditions and provide unwavering care for patients facing lifelong health challenges.

Episode 98 - Reach your weight goals in 2023 by unconditionally loving your health journey

The Unraveled Mama Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 11, 2023 18:27

Mama, I want to ask you a difficult question, and I want you to reflect on this question without beating yourself up! Do you love yourself so unconditionally that you want to make healthy decisions?‌Before we dive more into that question, I want you to think of what unconditional love feels like. As a mama, it's easy for me to look at my kids and understand what true unconditional love looks and feels like.‌My son Eastin had a lot of health issues as an infant and toddler. One of the hardest things for me was that he was non-verbal for a long time. That lead to tantrums and crying and screaming any time I didn't understand what he needed. It was exhausting to go through these tantrums.‌But I loved my son and knew I would do whatever I could to help him, so I spent hours researching therapists and taking him to appointments. I would push back against the people who gave us mean looks. When doctors told us that he wasn't ever going to change and that he would be disruptive in class and difficult forever, I walked out and found him new doctors and therapists who would believe in him.‌We spent so much time working to help him communicate and be respectful. Now, no one would know that Eastin ever struggled. He's a leader on his football and baseball teams. He behaves in class. He has big dreams and big goals. He cares so much about everyone he comes in contact with.‌I fought for him because I had unconditional love for him. When it was difficult for me I kept going because I wanted the very best for my son.‌Now that you can have that feeling in your heart, I want to go back to our question: Do you love yourself so unconditionally that you would do whatever it took to ensure your health and happiness?‌It's easy to feel unconditional love for other people, but so often we forget to have unconditional love for ourselves. This is especially true when you're on a health and weight loss journey. But I want to show you how learning to love yourself unconditionally can help you reach your goals faster than you ever have!Unconditional love doesn't require perfectionHow many times have you wanted to start a new diet or exercise program but told yourself you should wait until…‌You could afford a gym membershipGot the perfect meal programDidn't have any events/trips/parties coming up.Got rid of all the junk food.Work wasn't so stressful. When you're done having kids.‌This is all conditional! When you're not willing to pursue your health goals or improve your health because you don't have the perfect conditions, is a way of telling yourself that you're not worth feeling good now.‌But unconditional love tells you that no matter the circumstances, you deserve to feel your best!‌Think about if you applied this logic to your kids. What if you didn't buy your kids new shoes because they were just going to grow out of them in a few months? You made them wear worn-out, tattered, tiny shoes until their feet stopped growing. Would that feel good for them? No! And you wouldn't do that to your kids because you know that growing out of shoes is just something that comes with childhood.‌Not having a gym membership, going to events, and having junk food in the house are all parts of life that aren't going to go away. And if you wait for all the stars to align before you allow yourself to start a health or weight loss journey, you're going to be waiting forever!‌The purpose of a health journey isn't to have perfect conditions so that you're never tempted to fall off the wagon. The purpose is to learn how to make healthy decisions for yourself no matter the circumstances because you are worth those healthy decisions! Results won't keep you going - enjoying the journey willAnother mistake mamas fall into when they're trying to lose weight or start healthy habits is not loving the journey unconditionally.‌Most people start making healthy choices and expect to be happy once they get the results they're looking for. They set a goal weight and believe that once they hit that weight, life will be everything they want it to be.‌This dependence on results creates a conditional love. You end up unconsciously telling yourself that you'll love yourself and your life when you see your goal weight on the scale.‌But the scale fluctuates. Even for that girl who you want to look just like. Her weight is going to up and down every day depending on what she ate the day before, where she's at on her cycle, how well she slept, how much water she drank, etc.‌If you ride the results roller coaster, you're never going to love yourself, or your life unconditionally.‌Instead, you need to fall in love with the journey you're on because healthy living doesn't have a final destination! You don't get to lose 20 lbs, go back to eating whatever you want and never moving your body and keep that 20 lbs off.‌One of the reasons why we lose weight and then put it back on is because we think it will feel a certain way. I will feel happy, I will feel confident, I will feel worthy. If we don't work on creating that feeling as we go, then when we lose the 20,40,60 lbs we are not going to feel these feelings.‌And what happens then? We self-sabotage. We give ourselves permission to let our feelings dictate our food choices again and we put all the weight back on.‌Then we're stuck in this perpetual look where we have to start all over again. We look for a new diet that promises to give us those feelings we were searching for. We start again and hope that this time when we “arrive” we feel the feelings we are seeking.‌However, unconditionally loving our health journey means we create that feeling before we have hit the weight loss goals so that when we reach the goals our mind and body have arrived together.‌If you dread eating healthy food and despise working out, you'll get stuck in the yo-yo dieting pattern forever and you'll never be happy with yourself.‌But, if you learn how to eat the food you love in a balanced way and you find ways to move your body that you love, you'll become the happy, healthy person you've always wanted to be. And you'll find that unconditional love that you've been searching for.‌Macro tracking helped me find that balance in my life. I learned not just how to follow a diet, but how to eat for my body and my needs.‌With macro tracking, I learned how to eat when I wanted to look good in a bikini. I learned how to eat during the holidays without feeling like I was missing out. I learned what foods make me feel good and what foods make me feel gross or sluggish.‌As I navigated the journey towards health I saw my whole life improve. The life I dreamed of started to become a reality because I worked to enjoy the whole process instead of waiting on the results.‌Unconditional love doesn't mean you stay stuck and just accept life as it is. Unconditional love appreciates where you're at now and work to become a better version of yourself tomorrow. Mama, you deserve to have that kind of love for yourself.‌If you want to achieve your weight goals in 2023 in a way that won't make you miserable along the way, let's chat. Episode 84- 3 Ways healthy mamas disconnect from emotional eating

The Unraveled Mama Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 24, 2022 19:07

Mama,‌Emotional eating is one of the biggest reasons women, especially busy mamas, gain weight. There are so many different ways we emotionally eat, sometimes we're looking to soothe or ignore a feeling, sometimes we're looking for food to take us back to a fond memory and sometimes we just want our food to sound good! Emotional eating in one form or another is something every single woman struggles with! Healthy mamas know how to disconnect from emotional eating so that they can reach their health goals while still enjoying their food!I see this process happen all the time in my Macros Made Easy Program. Most of the women in my program come to me with diet fatigue. They've spent years losing and gaining back the same 10-15 pounds and have tried every diet under the sun. They've cut calories. They've cut carbs. They've cut fat. They've increased fat. They've taken weight loss pills. They've had all the weight loss shakes. So when they finally come to me they don't want to cut anymore. They don't want to give up their favorite foods. They just want to feel good and eat food that makes them happy.Which is exactly why I love macro tracking so much. There aren't lists of restricted foods. It's all about taking the food you're eating and enjoying now and making it work for you instead of against you! With macro tracking, we start where you are and we make progress from there. When I started tracking my macros, I felt the same way that my clients do! I told my macro coach that my non-negotiable was my morning coffee with coffee creamer. I'll be honest it was mostly coffee creamer with a little bit of coffee. Regardless, I was never going to give it up. I loved my coffee. It made me happy. I wasn't ever going to let it go away.I didn't realize it yet, but I had an emotional attachment to my morning cup of coffee! It was something I relied on to make me happy! As I dove into macro tracking I would enter my morning cup of coffee with my large allotment of coffee creamer every single day. I made it a part of my meal planning. And it was amazing.A few months into tracking, I started to realize that as much as I loved coffee creamer, it was costing me a lot of fat every day. I started to evaluate if the creamer was still worth such a large portion of my calorie intake. Learning about nutrition and how my food choices could improve my health, my weight loss, and my energy, I started to feel differently about my coffee creamer. The emotional attachment was breaking.I had learned a trick about switching out coffee creamer for a protein shake, so I decided to give that a try. And, much to my surprise, it tasted just as good! Plus it added protein into my day without me even realizing it. So I gave up the coffee creamer and I was just as happy. This is the progression you made when you become a healthy mama! You slowly release your emotional attachments to food because you learn they aren't serving you anymore! It's a huge breakthrough when you reach this point.I'm always honored when a mama chooses to work with me because I know food and weight loss are emotional. Without realizing it we tie emotion to food in so many ways! Whether it's your grandma's recipe that you grew up on, a favorite holiday treat that brings back memories, or your favorite chips, food holds so much emotion in it.I don't ever want to tear you away from the happy memories food holds, which is why I don't ever, ever, ever tell my clients they can't have something! What I want you to learn is how to control your emotions around food so that you can become the healthy mama that you want to be.I want to talk you through the three main progressions my clients take in their food attachments and how you can overcome them too as you learn about nutrition.Healthy mamas decide what's good for themWhen you're hungry how do you decide what to eat? What are the words you use to think about food? I'm going to give you a few examples to get you thinking!Do you say:What sounds good right now? What foods would nourish me and prepare me for my day?How can I get protein into this meal?My guess is you say, “What sounds good right now?” because that's how most of us were taught to think about food - myself included! The crazy thing is that when we say “what sounds good?” we relinquish control of our food to our emotions. Have you ever thought of it like that before? It's a crazy thought. When you're focused on eating for feeling or taste you fall prey to eating food that doesn't serve you.Healthy mamas think about food as fuel. And yes, we all want food to taste good, but sometimes, you have to eat to fuel yourself for the day ahead instead of blowing your tastebuds out of the water.Think about it this way, if your kids had a big test in school would you let them start the day with Fruity Pebbles, donuts and orange juice that would inevitably lead to a sugar crash during their test or would you make sure they had a balanced breakfast that would fuel their brains? That's how you should think of your food too! Sure, a frappuccino and danish from Starbucks sounds amazing, but is that going to help you get your kids to school on time, make sure you perform well at work, give you the energy to go to the gym, run errands and clean the house? Probably not.If you want to be a healthy mama, you have to start choosing food and meals that fuel your life! Here are a few quick tips you can use to start creating healthy mama habits:Have protein at every mealStart your day with protein, fat and whole grainsHave healthy snacks throughout the day (think fruits, veggies, protein!)Drink more water!! (See my 3x8 trick to get more water in your day!)Healthy mamas don't use food to sootheOne of the unhealthy attachments we can have to food is for emotional soothing. When life gets to be too much a lot of women do one of two things. They either use food to comfort themselves and end up overeating. Or they ignore their hunger cues and stop eating unless it's absolutely necessary. After having my son, Eastin, I developed an unhealthy attachment to food. For the first year of his life, he was in and out of the hospital and I coped with it by eating. In the moment, eating helped to calm my nerves and anxiety, but long term it hurt me. I gained so much weight and I developed so many unhealthy habits. I knew that eating a whole sleeve of Oreos after every doctor's visit wasn't helping me and it wasn't a habit I wanted to pass down to my kids.It took a lot of time, therapy, and learning about nutrition to help me step back from my emotional eating, but mama, let me tell you, it was so worth it!I created a new relationship with food. One that I would be proud to pass down to my kids. I didn't demonize Oreos because they contributed to my weight gain. They weren't inherently evil! They were how I coped with a stressful time in my life. They played a part and now that the stress was gone I needed to release them.I became a healthy mama who knew when I could enjoy the treats (I eat a cupcake at all my kids' birthday parties) and when I was trying to use food to hide the big stuff. That's what I want for you too.If you struggle with emotional eating, the first step is to recognize it. Whether you overeat when you're stressed or don't eat at all, you can practice this! Once you realize that you're taking the action, grab a piece of paper and write down what feeling or emotion you're trying to ignore. If you can, write down why you think you're trying to ignore it and write down what you could do to help deal with it.Writing is a powerful tool! Don't underestimate how helpful it can be just to write your feelings out. Maybe that's all you need to do to confront the feelings you're having. If you can't quite put your finger on why you're using food to hide emotions, that's ok too. Come back and revisit it when you feel ready to face that emotion.Bringing awareness to your emotional eating patterns is exactly what healthy mamas do! If you need more help with emotional eating, let's chat. This is probably something you could use a support system on and I'd love to help you through that.Healthy mamas still get to enjoy foodSome foods are meant to make you happy. Maybe you have fond memories of making cookies after school with your mom. And when you eat cookies you think back on that experience and want to give that to your kids too. You can do just that and still be a healthy mama! The most amazing thing about disconnecting from emotional eating is that you still get to enjoy food! In fact, you probably will enjoy food more as you focus on your health because you'll start to let go of the guilt, shame and regret that you used to feel when you ate “bad foods.”There are no good or bad foods, just food accountability! When you stop viewing food as good or bad, you stop viewing yourself as good or bad when you eat them! You can enjoy a chocolate chip cookie without making it mean that you “cheated” or that you were weak. You can enjoy a cookie, simply because cookies bring back happy memories and they taste good!As you learn about food, nutrition, and making the right decisions for your body, you take back the power to make healthy food choices. That's the transformation I want for you, mama. I want you to feel good when you eat a delicious salad and I want you to feel good when you eat a cookie. Both are serving a purpose and both can be good for you.Let's talk about your goal and how we can work together to reach them! The Unraveled Mama Podcast

Mama,We can all admit that certain teams, people, businesses, circumstances make us feel a certain way...frustrated, heavy-hearted, defeated and disappointed kind of ways. They evoke emotions that bring out the ugly in us that even the most seasoned fan, professional or EQ expert can't resist. This last weekend was my son's last baseball tournament in his 10-month season with his 10-and-under club team. My son, his teammates and his coaches have grown so much in the last year. The lows were low and the highs were high. They put their heads down, ground through the hard, and uncomfortable and celebrated the highs for as long as they could. Then they went into the final tournament of the seasonGoing into Sunday's game, the boys had 3 wins and 0 losses and we were facing a team that had beaten them in the last inning at each of the last 2 tournaments. The opposing team's parents were unbearable, unruly. The coaches were no better, they were over the top and unreasonable. But that's sports, right? There is always that team that just gets you, a rival, your nemesis, your Achilles heel. This was that team. Everything about them was infuriating. In bracket play during the last inning against this team, we were losing by a handful of runs. There were 2 outs and it was my son's turn to bat.We work so hard to prepare our kids for lifeI was nervous! These moments are amazing when they go our way and CRUSHING when they do not. I wanted to protect him from failure, I wanted to save him from disappointment but this was the game, he was on his own and mommy couldn't do a thing about it at that moment. My kids and I talk often about mindset and tools and strategies to overcome stress and allow ourselves to perform or problem solve. One of the things we have been working on is our breath, in hard or stressful situations. Our breath is the beginning and the end of everything, including big moments! Our breath can reset our nervous system, slow down our fight or flight hormones, and calm our thoughts.I watched Eastin take a deep breath and walk over to the batter's box. He was doing his best to set himself up for success. I could see him using his tools as best as he could.Something you should know about Eastin craves and desires to be the go-to guy. He loves Joko Wilinik and has read all of his Way of the Warrior kids books. He studies history and loves the military because of heroes like Pat Tillman. Leaders who go into battle and are willing to sacrifice it all for the cause. He has his own 10-year-old cause: baseball. And he takes that cause seriously!Eastin's 3rd base coach knew this about my guy and instinctively knew the pressure this 10-year-old boy was putting on himself at that moment! Before Eastin went up to bat, his third base coach called a time out, pulled Eastin over, grabbed him by the helmet to make sure he could really hear what was being said, looked him straight in the eye, and told him “There is nobody else I would want at the plate at this moment. You're my guy, win or lose, hit or strikeout. I believe in you and whatever the outcome is we will see them again tomorrow. Regardless of what happens in this at-bat you are good!”Then, we have to let them go out and do while we hold our breath watching from the sidelinesE went up to bat and...he struck out.Game over, the other team won and we took the 2nd place seed for the next day. Many times throughout the season, I have watched Eastin crumble. I watched the weight of the moment squash him. It was heart-wrenching and hard to watch every single time it happened. But not this time. He didn't beat himself up. He wasn't defeated, he wasn't crushed. He walked away from that strikeout in a way I haven't seen him do before. It was a disappointment, but not a defeat. Why?Why was this time different?Because his coach had his back and told him, YOU ARE NOT YOUR AT-BATS. YOU ARE NOT YOUR FAILURES OR MISTAKES OR MISSED OPPORTUNITIES. You are worthy of wearing the jersey no matter the outcome of this at-bat and tomorrow is a new day with new opportunities. That mindset work makes a huge differenceOH MY GAH!!!MAMA. FRIEND, imagine if that's how we lived our lives out as adults, as mamas as wives and entrepreneurs! No matter the outcome you are worthy of all the good things in life. Of love, joy, confidence, pleasures and success! How much more present would we allow ourselves to be? How many more risks would we allow ourselves to take?Eastin's coach could have shared these words with him after he struck out but he took the time to tell him before the mistake, before the failure, before the disappointment. This infused confidence into Eastin and allowed him to know and experience his worth -- even in failure! I am certain this allowed him to show up the next day and give it another go!We always get the opportunity to do betterThe next day, the boys played in a semi-final game as the number 2 seed of our bracket, and these boys showed up to play and beat the number 1 team from the other bracket to advance to the finals.AND GUESS WHO WE WOULD FACE?Yup, you guessed it, they would face the team they lost to the day before and the team Eastin struck out against to end the game. They got a rematch and Eastin's team battled. They made errors and they made great plays. The game was intense, the boys worked, they showed up, they took risks, they had each other's backs, they didn't cower at the challenge of beating a team that had beaten them the last 3 times.Eastin faced the same pitcher that struck him out just one day before. He took his breath and settled into the batter's box. Eastin hit a single that brought in 2 runs for his team!As fate would have it, they would come out on top this time! They won the tournament and slayed the dragon that beat them the day before! The mind-blowing lesson I learnedImagine if you had someone who had your back and breathed belief and confidence into you! How would you slay your dragons? How would you show up?My guess is that you would overcome more than your heart could imagine! My guess is that you have a dragon that needs to be slayed and you need a support system from a coach, a mentor, a guide, a teacher to have your back so you can slay it.I want to encourage you to find that coach, mentor, guide, to help you.You are worthy of asking for help. You are worthy of spending money to get where you want to go. You are worthy of your dreams and goals. Stop getting in your own way. Stop trying to muscle your way through. Stop beating yourself up because you don't know all the answers or the path. Believe in yourself. Ask for help. It's amazing what kind of results you'll see when you have someone who believes in you. It's amazing what you will learn and understand about yourself on the journey and we all need just a little belief in ourselves along the way!If you want a coach/cheerleader/friend to help you achieve your weight loss or health goals, then I would like to volunteer to be that person for you.Schedule a Free Discovery Session here:KmoreMacro Have a question? Eastin also weighs in on the debate over reopening schools, arguing that it not only needs to happen, it needs to happen as fast as possible for the benefit of the state's schoolchildren. She discounts "distance learning," noting that it is not possible for many of the state's children, especially those in lower income households or rural areas with lack of access to broadband. Getting back into class, she argues, is essential: for many kids, "going to school every day is what makes their life work."

If fear has kept you from walking forward in your God-shaped dream, this episode will remind you that you're not alone. This conversation with Jenni Eastin will also provide perspective on how to finally move forward even if you can't see the finish line. In this interview, Jenni gives us the assurance that God is in control and that we can trust Him enough to surrender our dreams to Him. She shares two intimate, real-life stories that are her constant reminders of these truths and motivation to share the hope she's found with others. Jenni helps normalize that feeling of wanting to start on your dream but getting stopped in your tracks by the voices that taunt you with doubts about who you are, how God made you and how you have no business dreaming your dream. But, along this journey, she's discovered tools that help her fight back against those voices. One is the permission to start sloppy and another is a redefinition of success. If you've ever tried to run away from the dream God's given you, I hope this interview is just what you need to gain a little perspective and maybe even get started—even if it's a little sloppy. Jenni Eastin is a hope-filled, freedom-fighter set on sharing stories that leave a mark on other's hearts. Carol Lakota Eastin, of the Illinois Great Rivers Area of the United Methodist Church, shares memories of the 2016 Peg-Leg Flamingo youth pilgrimage to the Standing Rock Reservation, where these young Native American students joined protestors of the Dakota Access Pipeline and gained a greater understanding of their proud heritage. (VOICED BY PROFESSIONAL TALENT) FULL TRANSCRIPT 00:04     When women come together, there's nothing we cannot do. Welcome to the WellSprings Journal Podcast, where you will hear from women who have been called by God into lives that speak grace and compassion, that share pain and anger, and that dance life's joys and laughter. Inspiration to call forth your creative spirit await. Listen now. 00:40     Journey to Standing Rock. Carol Lakota Eastin, Illinois Great Rivers Annual Conference. The following are reflections on the fall 2016 Peg Leg Flamingo Youth Trip to North Dakota, a program of the Native American International Caucus, Northeast region. The decision was made by the leaders to change one full day of our curriculum so the youth could experience the water protection site where thousands of native people of many nations were gathered to pray and protect the water threatened by the Dakota Access Pipeline. It was a three-hour ride from Spirit Lake Ministry Center to visit the water protectors camp at Standing Rock. 01:17     Our bus was filled with Native American youth and leaders who had gathered to make life better. This trip was a deviation from our original plan but seemed to have been pre-ordained. We passed through the police blockade, which tested our intentions and through the Indian Warrior blockade, which tested our spirit. The road led us to the crest of a hill where we saw the camp spread out before us. A sight that would remind us of the former glory of the Dakota people and reveal to us the present glory of all who had gathered to protect the water. Tipis were scattered between tents and campers. Cars in the parking lot were near horses in their corals. Rows of nearly 200 travel flags lined the pathway and the Missouri River running clean made this life possible. 02:03     “Mni Wiconi,” which means water is life, was the rallying cry written on t-shirts and banners. The excitement among us was palpable – eyes big, expectation written on young faces. The hours of preparing prayer tithes had readied us to see our people, but even more to see the Creator among the least of them. One young woman expressed her joy saying, "These are my people. I belong here." Defying old messages of "You are nobody," and "You are different." Two young men proudly held up their tribe’s flag and others prepared prayer cloths to tie to the fences already full from pilgrims who came to pray before us. The smell of sage smoke and the sound of the drum drew us to the center circle where we carried our gifts, the Oneida nation flag, a letter from the chief of the Nanticoke people, greetings from the United Methodist Church, bundles of tobacco and our prayers. 02:59     We were brought to the center of the circle and honored. The elders touching each one of us with a blessing. A grandmother whispered to me, "Welcome home, granddaughter." I was reminded of the unconditional welcome Christ offers us. Time evaporated and it was as if I was my great-grandmother. It was as if the city was transformed to a village. We remembered the former glory of the Great Plains Indians whose villages dabbled this country like spots on horses. We walked a trail to the water's edge and gathered to pray. We tied blue ribbons on each other's wrist, ribbons that marked our promise to protect the water wherever our people live. “Water is life,” we said, and we were joined by some of the people who had been camping here for months. One rode up to the shore in a rowboat and joined us. 03:48     For that time of worship together we were one family. “Mitakuye Oyasin,” the people say. We are all relatives. Its meaning echoed in our hearts. Jesus’ prayer resounded in my mind, “Lord, let them be One.” “Your water is my water,” we remembered. Whatever happens to the water in one place happens to the water in every place because all the water is connected. The water we drink is the same water that was made at the creation of the world. 04:19     Later, we sat in a circle by the fire at the youth lodge. We heard songs and stories from the young adults there while their infant children played at our feet. There songs became our songs and their stories became our stories. We were welcomed there like family. We left them gifts of prayers. I felt my life changing in that one day at Standing Rock. Remembering what the People can do when they pray together. I saw young people's lives being changed. We all left stronger than before, knowing more about who we are and whose we are. We would go back to our various communities and we would stand to protect the water there and we did. Some have stood with signs in Washington, D.C., and others have helped organize at water summit in Minnesota. After all, it's all the same water and the People, we are all one People, and Our God is the giver of the gift of life. 05:15     Post note: The Dakota Access Pipeline is in place. It's like a black snake under the river at Standing Rock. When will it strike? We will see. 05:26     Thank you for listening to the WellSprings Journal Podcast. The comic is illustrated by Dan Buksa, who has delivered some of the best designs for these monsters I’ve seen in years.  It’s real scary stuff that’s amplified by the fact that Jack is the only human around. Howl began on Kickstarter and the first three issues have been released.  The creators are planning on running another Kickstarter to finish the series in a graphic novel.  You can order the first three issues in print or digital format through HowlComics.com.  Digital copies can also be ordered on ComiXology. And it does a great job of warming Texans on the verge of hypothermia. Here are those recipes. Enjoy!
