PEER TALK is a fresh new podcast emerging from the halls of Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School. At Beyond the Fog Radio, we recognized the need for a platform designed for and by middle school students — where youth can develop their voices and share their perspectives. Located in Bayview—Hunters Point, in San Francisco — a neighborhood historically comprised of African-American families — Willie L. Brown Jr. Middle School carries the name of former San Francisco Mayor and Speaker of the California Assembly, who has devoted himself to the well-being of others. In the wake of the 2024 Election, we realized just how critical it is to equip students with the confidence to speak out, learn from community leaders, and dive into civic engagement — preparing them to become the next wave of local and global change-makers. Each guest on PEER TALK is chosen to align with the students' coursework, bringing lessons to life through real-world experiences. Our debut episode features seventh-graders from Mr. O's Peer Resource class interviewing Margo Hall — Artistic Director of the Lorraine Hansberry Theatre — to discuss the influence she and Lorraine Hansberry have had on American theatre. Beyond the Fog Radio is thrilled to present PEER TALK at Willie Brown Middle School: a space for the next generation of community leaders to explore, learn, and inspire, right here in San Francisco.

San Francisco's urban glamour once drew crowds, but Florida Governor Ron DeSantis argues that the city has seen better days. In a recent visit, DeSantis observed firsthand the degradation of the once-booming metropolis. San Francisco's crumbling status is a direct result of leftist policies, DeSantis posits, pointing to defecating pedestrians, rampant drug use, and the disappearance of the city's vibrant energy. The city's leadership has lost its way, according to DeSantis, and the proof is in the boarded-up businesses, the crime rate that doesn't measure up to the rest of the country, and the exodus of people fleeing to sunnier locales like Florida. San Francisco Mayor London Breed countered by stating that DeSantis, like many politicians, was highlighting the negatives while overlooking potential solutions. Yet, Breed's refutations seemed half-hearted in the face of the visual evidence presented by DeSantis.#SanFranciscoDebate #LeftistPolicies #FloridaVsSanFranSupport the show

At a San Francisco Chamber of Commerce breakfast last month, Mayor London Breed made a curious pitch for the future of the troubled Westfield San Francisco Centre in Downtown.“We have to look at Westfield mall, not as a mall losing stores, which probably most people didn't even shop in, but as a place ripe for reimagining from science to technology to lab space,” Breed said. She echoed those statements during a radio interview last week, noting the potential for the property—a 1.2 million-square-foot mall in the middle of Market Street—to be used by higher education. In retrospect, the comments read as softening the blow of Westfield's decision, revealed days later, to give up the property because of declining sales, foot traffic and occupancy. Part of Breed's argument is that lab and research and development space have far lower vacancy rates than the broader office market. San Francisco's 1 million square feet of lab inventory pales in comparison with traditional life science centers like the Peninsula (17 million square feet) or even Oakland (7.8 million square feet).Support the show

It is Fleet Week in San Francisco. Are you coming to the city to see the Blue Angels and the ships? What is Fleet Week? San Francisco Fleet Week is one of the country's largest celebrations of the U.S. armed forces. The celebration was started in 1981 by then San Francisco Mayor, Diane Feinstein. Organizers say following the pandemic huge crowds turned out for Fleet Week last year, and they're predicting big crowds again this year.  Where is it? Most official Fleet Week activities take place along The Embarcadero and Marina Greens. If you're looking for the best seating for the airshow, the Marina Green is the place to be. The Presidio Tunnel Tops, Twin Peaks, Pier 39 and Crissy Field will also provide great views. Watching the Air Show is free, but premium seating is available for purchase.  City leaders are advising visitors, as they have in years past, to use public transit and say if you must drive, be sure to not leave any valuables in your vehicle, in fact they're warning people who drive to clear any valuables out of their car even before they park, just in case burglars are watching. What's new in 2022? Organizers say for the first time ever Navy F-35's will be at San Francisco's Fleet Week. Two of the F-35's will be on display for visitors to enjoy.  Say something good about yourself - it's ‘Toot your Flute” DaySee omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

When people talk about the many attacks on Asian and Pacific Islander (API) people, they usually don't talk about gay or queer people. These attacks have been going on for a long time, and seemingly nobody pays attention to it. This special panel will highlight how these attacks are affecting the queer Asian community and how this silent violence is impacting their lives and the lives of their loved ones. It will also remove the veil of shame and secrecy around queerness that is experienced by many in the Asian diaspora. Tiffany Yu is the CEO & Founder of Diversability, an award-winning social enterprise working to elevate disability pride. Tiffany is also the Founder of the Awesome Foundation Disability Chapter, a monthly micro-grant that has awarded about $59k to 59 disability projects in 9 countries, and a content creator with almost 160k+ followers across platforms. She serves on the San Francisco Mayor's Disability Council and was a 2020 Co-Chair of the World Economic Forum Sustainable Development Impact Summit. At the age of 9, Tiffany became disabled as a result of a car accident that also took the life of her father.   She is a 3x TEDx speaker and spoke on 5 sessions at the World Economic Forum Annual Meeting in Davos. She has been featured in Marie Claire, the Guardian, and Forbes.     In this episode we discuss: The importance of finding your voice and stepping into your story One simple thing businesses can do for new employees, that can surprisingly set a tone of inclusion Why 96% of disabled people don't disclose their disability to their employer The power of community, and the important connection between community and confidence   Key Takeaways: By sharing our stories and aspects of our identity that diverge from a standard narrative, conversation by conversation, we give awareness to a more complete spectrum of the human experience. Seeing diversity represented around us gives us permission to share the diverse intersectionality found within us. Showing up authentically is contagious, and this is where true connection and community thrive. The inclusion and belonging found in community is essential to satisfying the fundamental needs in Maslow's hierarchy. Only after our fundamental needs are met are we able to start rising up against the hierarchy to contribute our gifts to the world. Inclusion and belonging create an environment in which each of us can thrive. Here are 3 ways that you can support Tiffany's mission to increase intersectional disability representation and democratize visibility: Hire people with disabilities Incorporate an accessibility lens into your natural way of operating by asking yourself “would a person without sight/sound/full mobility/etc. be able to participate in this?” Donate to the Disability Empowerment Fund   References: Diversability Crip Camp   Tiffany's social media: LinkedIn Instagram TikTok Twitter Facebook   Connect & Share: If you enjoy the podcast, would you please consider leaving a short review on Apple Podcasts/iTunes?
