Death comes to us all, as the saying goes, and while your hosts aren't feeling particularly morbid at the moment, we certainly look around from time to time at all of the tools and paints and supplies on our workbenches; the closets and shelves full of un-built kits; the stacks (and stacks and stacks) of books; our displays of the figures, vignettes, and dioramas we've built and collected from friends and artists we admire, and the odd piece of militaria we've acquired and think, “Who's going to take care of all of this STUFF when we're gone?”And we bet you've asked this question, too.As a maker and as a collector, our pal and repeat Small Subjects guest Joe Berton certainly has. What's more, he has helped clear out the collections of quite a few of those we've lost who shared our passions—including some pretty epic ones. In this episode, we asked him to help us think about preparing for the inevitable, in part because we don't know anyone who's more expert in this regard, but also because, Joe being Joe, he brings plenty of laughs and quite a few memorable anecdotes to what could have been a somewhat dark discussion (but isn't, we promise!).For photos of what we discuss in each episode, visit the Small Subjects blog on boxdioramas.com: http://www.boxdioramas.com/smallsubjects

In the 1960s, it was said Canada had entered The Berton era. From the 1950s to the 2000s, Pierre Berton was omnipresent on television screens, radios and on the shelves of bookstores. He wrote 50 books and showed Canadians they had a past. He brought Canada's history to life, and is a direct inspiration for this very podcast. Joe has been an active modeler since his teens in the early 1970s, and he is one of the most acclaimed artists and well-loved friend-to-all in the miniatures hobby. A retired art teacher, he's a man with a million stories (and a rather famous alter ego, at least among baseball fans). We enjoyed every minute of talking with him, and feel like we've only scratched the surface, so we may well have to consider a recurring segment. Welcome back to the Night Shift, on this episode we start off with small talk about entities. Moving forward into some of our recent research into Hat Man. A very bizarre entity that were both eager to learn more about. As we open lines we have a few vary strange ones to say the least. The first caller tells of seeing a humanoid entity on his property that he ends up attempting to shoot. Only this entity acts as though nothing happens to it. We also get a call about a helicopter pilot seeing a UFO, then he goes on to tell about flying a helicopter for the military. When he using the FLIR he sees something that takes them all by surprise. We also get a call from Berton about sleep paralysis and then a call about a man being visited by his grandfather. Thanks for listening as always stay safe and stay weird. Welcome back to the Peaceful Political Revolution in America podcast. I couldn't go any further without a discussion about Thomas Paine's Rights of Man. Not because it was historically significant, although it certainly was. But, because it lays the foundation for our nation and our identity as Americans, it is perhaps more relevant today than it was in 1792.I began this season with a discussion about American Sovereigns for a purpose. We need to begin to think of ourselves as the rightful and legal owners of our government. Fritz was pretty clear, this is our uniquely American heritage, a power that deserves all of our respect and comprehension. I followed this with a conversation about the elites, the ones who according to Robert Ovetz and a few others, created a political system to serve the oligarchy. The sovereigns and the elites have been here right from the beginning. We need to distinguish between those two groups in America and we need to understand the very different roles they play and how they are enabled.Today, we the sovereigns play a minor role in decision-making for our nation compared to most modern democracies. We have limited ways of getting our message out. We have limited choices. On the other hand, the elites have all kinds of ways to express their concerns and to advocate for their interests. They write the historical narrative. They create and sell the consensus reality you and I live in. If they wanted to normalize climate-related disasters or mass shootings, they could. They are making plans for our future as well, and none of them have been elected to do so. We see this play out in numerous ways every day. We the Sovereigns, on the other hand, remain divided. We live in a manufactured reality because human beings are creative and industrious, it seems we the sovereigns have no other choice. But whose reality is it? Do we have the political and economic systems we need to create the reality we want? Thomas Paine's message may be more relevant today than it ever was and to explain why, I've asked Gary Berton, president of the TPNHA to come back for a closer look, this time, at Thomas Paine and his seminal book, Rights of Man.OUTRO So, are human beings fundamentally rational enough to know how to govern ourselves? The elites were capable of creating a government that would serve them, but what about the rest of us? Are we rational enough, informed enough, and committed enough, to create a political system that protects our mutual interests? At its core, the political question of the day isn't who will be running for president, it's who will be calling the shots? Will it be the tiny minority of global elites or will it be the vast majority of human beings on the planet? As Gary says, that will require a movement of movements. Where ever constitutions of government fail to protect and promote the interests of the majority of citizens, more work will always be necessary. America is no exception to this fundamentally Painsian maxim. We're all going to have to be much more aware of the deficiencies within our political systems if we are ever going to rid ourselves of them.Beam in next time for a look at how we might improve our political systems of government and the kind of rights Paine had in mind for all Americans when I talk again with Harvey J. Kaye on his book, FDR on Democracy, the Four Freedoms and FDR's Economic Bill of Rights.Until then, stay safe out there.

Benjamin Berton author of a new book on Daniel Treacy in conversation with David Eastaugh "Dreamworld: The Fabulous Life of Daniel Treacy and his Band Television Personalities" London 1977: Daniel Treacy drops out of school, bored to death. Thanks to a few pounds sterling, lent to him by his parents, he records a few songs with friends and sends the finished single to the legendary radio DJ John Peel, who is immediately thrilled - the Television Personalities are born .. In the turbulent life of Daniel Treacy we meet Jimmy Page, Bob Marley, Alan McGee, David Gilmour, Wham!, Nico and Kurt Cobain. Dreamworld is the very real, very crazy story of a genius in music history whose importance is not infrequently compared to that of Mark E. Smith of The Fall. Enriched with plenty of scene and period colour from British pop from the 1960s to the present, "Dreamworld" tells of all the ups and downs of a legend who once ironically (but quite rightly) described himself in an interview as the "Godfather of Indie Pop". The English translation by David Marshall is published with a completely revised colour picture section and numerous illustrations.

This week on 8111, John Berton!! John was born in the midwest. His dad was a mathematics professor and his mother was a musician. John loved movies as a kid and, through his dad, had early access to computers. He learned Fortran in high school and was fascinated by the logic of programming. John attended Denison University and studied communications and even had his own radio program. For grad school he attended Ohio State and studied computer graphics with American artist and computer art pioneer Charles Csuri. His interest in film, music, physics, and programming led him down the path that would eventually lead to working in visual effects. After grad school John went to work with Charles Csuri at his new company, Cranston/Csuri in Ohio. They made some of the first early flying logos for HBO, CBS, Cinemax, and many others. John later went to work at Mental Images in Berlin. From there he made the connection to ILM where he came to work in 1989 on Terminator 2. John's ILM credits include; T2, Men in Black, Star Trek VI, Hook, Death Becomes Her, Jurassic Park, The Mask, Casper, Star Wars: A New Hope Special Edition, Deep Rising, The Mummy, The Mummy Returns, and Men in Black 2. Since ILM, he has continued to work on films and television creating visual effects in projects including; I, Robot, Charlotte's Web, Bedtime Stories, Krrish3, Godzilla, 13 Reasons Why, and Deep Water. John taught for a while at Drexel in Philadelphia and left when he had a chance to come work at Lytro developing light-field rendering. Today John is back working in visual effects on a project for Netflix. John was my Visual Effects Supervisor on Deep Rising and The Mummy. Working on John's teams are some of my favorite memories from my time at ILM. He is absolutely brilliant, and approaches his work with equal parts technological prowess and thoughtful artistry. It was awesome to reconnect with him and hear his amazing story.
In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we caught up with Ian Maze from Ichan School of Medicine at Mount Sinai and a Howard Hughes Medical Institute (HHMI) Investigator to talk about his work on the role of histone dopaminylation and serotinylation in neuronal plasticity. The Maze group focuses on understanding the complex interplay between chromatin regulatory mechanisms in brain and neuronal plasticity. The lab places an emphasis on psychiatric disorders associated with monoaminergic (e.g., serotonin, dopamine, etc.) dysfunction, such as major depressive disorder and drug addiction. In particular the Maze team has investigated cocaine addiction and its effect on chromatin by serotonylation and dopaminylation of Histone H3 Tails. References Maze, I., Covington, H. E., Dietz, D.
