The Culture Journalist is a podcast about culture in the age of platforms. Episodes drop every other week, but if you want the full experience — including bonus episodes and our eternal parasocial friendship — we recommend signing up for a paid subscription.Paid subscribers also get access to CUJOPLEX, a private Discord server and online hangout zone where independent culture fans who like talking about things like creative economies, media theory, current events, and the future of entertainment and journalism can congregate, share links, and talk about the news of the day.Climate disasters like the Los Angeles wildfires in January and Hurricane Helene last fall aren't just laying bare the realities of global warming; they're exposing the hidden dynamics of another kind of ecosystem: Media and information. From journalists compiling mutual aid spreadsheets to country music radio shows that became community message boards when the internet went out, these calamities are shining a spotlight on the evolving role of journalism and how we access information. They're also raising new questions about what that information should be, whose responsibility it is to vet and disseminate it, and what the media of the future might look like — you know, as climate disaster becomes a more regular feature of life. There's a lot to unpack here. So we've tagged in two media experts who, like Andrea, are based in LA and have had to confront climate disasters firsthand. Matt Pearce is a former Los Angeles Times reporter (and co-founder of its first union) with experience covering everything from hurricanes to internet culture; these days, he writes a Substack newsletter on the state of local news and media policy and is a senior policy advisor for the nonpartisan think tank Rebuild Local News.Longtime listeners might remember Emma Kemp from one of our earliest episodes on ghost kitchens. She's a researcher and writer and assistant professor at the Otis College of Art and Design who specializes in environmental media studies, and co-founder of the non-profit land conservation coalition No Canyon Hills.Matt and Emma join us to talk about their experiences on the ground as both media consumers and producers during the wildfires; the sources of information that became essential, and the sources of information that just sort of fell away; the limitations (and opportunities) of AI in a crisis; and how climate disasters will transform what both traditional and non-traditional media look like.Follow Matt on Substack and X. Check out his pieces on Watch Duty and on AI use during the wildfires.Check out more from Emma on her website and at No Canyon Hills. She also sells chickens, eggs, and coop supplies over at Party Fowl. The cover of “California Dreaming” by Jarvis Cocker featured in this episode was purchased from the LA fire benefit compilation Los Angeles Rising. Check it out, along with a collection of other compilations released to fundraise for wildfire relief, here. This is a public episode. Episode 474 - Lily Iona MacKenzie - Dreaming Myself into Old Age, One Woman's Search for MeaningI don't have hayseed clinging to my trousers, but growing up on a Canadian farm gave me a unique foundation as a writer. I sprouted under cumulous clouds that bloomed everywhere in Alberta's big sky. They were my first creative writing instructors, scudding across the heavenly blue, constantly changing shape: one minute an elephant, bruised and brooding. The next morphing into a rabbit or a castle. These billowing masses gave me a unique view of life on earth. As a girl, I prowled the land, talking to chickens and pigs and lambs, creating scenarios for them. I also tried to make perfume from the wild Alberta roses and captured caterpillars, watching with wonder when they transformed themselves into butterflies. Everything around me seemed infused by nature spirits waiting to be released.I soon realized that all objects are in motion, waiting for stories to illuminate them. The clouds' shifting form also schooled me in the various possibilities open to me as a writer. So did Jack Frost's enchanted creations that enlivened the windows in wintertime, forcing me to view my surroundings as if through a bewitching prism. These early experiences helped me to envision multi-dimensional characters. No wonder magical realism pulses at the heart of my narratives, and my work celebrates the imagination. As an adult, I continue to seek instruction from clouds. Just as they provide the earth with much-needed water, I believe that stories have a similar function, preparing the mind to receive new ideas. Also, conditions inside a cloud are not static—water droplets are constantly forming and re-evaporating. Stories, too, change, depending on who is reading them, each one giving life to its readers.I've published reviews, interviews, short fiction, poetry, travel pieces, essays, and memoir in over 165 American and Canadian venues. Fling!, one of my novels, was published in July 2015 by Pen-L Publishing. Regal House Publishing released Curva Peligrosa, another novel, in September 2017. Pen-L Publishing published Freefall: A Divine Comedy on 1/1/19. The Ripening: A Canadian Girl Grows Up!, featuring the same main character as in Freefall, came out on October 2021. My poetry collection All This was published in 2011, and a chapbook (No More Kings) was released in March 2020.Shanti Arts Publishing will release my hybrid memoir Dreaming Myself into Old Age: One Woman's Search for Meaning in 2023 as well as my new poetry collection California Dreaming. I also taught writing at the University of San Francisco (USF) for over 30 years and was vice-president of USF's part-time faculty union. I currently teach creative writing at USF's Fromm Institute for Lifelong Learning.https://lilyionamackenzie.com/Support the show___https://livingthenextchapter.com/podcast produced by: https://truemediasolutions.ca/Coffee Refills are always appreciated, refill Dave's cup here, and thanks!https://buymeacoffee.com/truemediaca

In this captivating episode of "Anthology of Horror," our esteemed host Spring Heeled Jack welcomed two distinguished guests to the studio: Sam Stoutman, acclaimed author of the "Pirates and Scalawags Trilogy," and the enigmatic master of the macabre, Scary Jerry, joining us from the windswept plains of Wyoming. Together, this trio of terror embarked on a spirited journey through the shadowy world of Reddit, setting their sights on a selection of ghost stories shared by the online community for a session of light-hearted roasting and insightful critique. As they ventured through tales of spectral encounters and haunted happenings, our hosts brought their unique perspectives to the fore. Sam Stoutman, with his keen eye for narrative structure, dissected the storytelling elements of each ghostly tale, while Scary Jerry's deep knowledge of horror lore added layers of depth and darkness to the discussion. Spring Heeled Jack, ever the charismatic conductor of this eerie symphony, steered the conversation with wit and wisdom, ensuring a perfect blend of humor and horror. The episode was interspersed with haunting musical interludes, including Spring Heeled Jack's own renditions of "Hotel California" by The Eagles and "California Dreaming" by The Mamas and the Papas, casting these familiar tunes in a new, more sinister light. These musical moments added a haunting ambiance to the episode, bridging the gap between tales with melodic mastery. As the episode drew to a close, the airwaves were filled with the stirring sounds of "Håll höjd" by Lastkaj 14. This powerful closing song, with its resonant lyrics and compelling melody, encapsulated the episode's journey through the spectral and the unknown, reminding listeners to keep their spirits high even when delving into the depths of horror."Håll höjd" served as a fitting finale to an episode that navigated the fine line between the eerie allure of ghost stories and the light-hearted banter of our hosts. This installment of "Anthology of Horror" not only entertained but also illuminated the art of storytelling, the enduring appeal of the paranormal, and the communal joy found in sharing tales of terror. With Spring Heeled Jack at the helm, and the invaluable contributions of Sam Stoutman and Scary Jerry, listeners were left with a renewed appreciation for the mysteries that lurk in the shadows and the laughter that lightens the darkness.Support the showYe olde march shop https://www.aohpmerch.com/s/shopDemented Darkness https://open.spotify.com/show/2ausD083OiTmVycCKpapQ8Dark Side of the Nerd https://open.spotify.com/show/6cwN3N3iifSVbddNRsXRTuFoxhound43 https://rumble.com/user/Foxhound43
Last week, the minimum wage for fast food workers in California went to $20. This will become the de facto minimum wage for unskilled labor across the state. While it might seem like a win for workers, what will be the likely end result? After all, someone will have to absorb this mandated cost increase, and it isn't just going to be employers. Don't tell anyone in Sacramento that, though. In this week's Trading Perspectives, Sam and John discuss the concept of the minimum wage and what its real impact is. If you took an Econ 101 class, you already know the answer.
Jonathan Marashlian will be speaking at the Cloud Connections Conference “What California is doing is it's undertaken a rulemaking proceeding to determine whether or not there are different types of voice -over IP service that require a more stringent degree of regulation,” says Jonathan Marashlian. Marashlian is a member of the CCA's Government Affairs Committee that carefully monitors legal regulatory issues in the US, UK, EU and elsewhere, as part of the CCA's effort to look out for the best interested on the cloud communications industry and the industry's millions of customers. “Regulation that may impose market entry requirements like licensing might require them to get surety bonds, may even impose transfer of control obligations on certain types of voiceover IP providers.” He cautions that a single state can cause a “snowball effect”. In this podcast, Marashlian gives us a quick update on this and several other hot topics that may, or may already, be impacting cloud communications companies. We get a glimpse of some of the news, on the legal front, that will be discussed at the upcoming Cloud Connections Conference: spam, robocalling, fraud, STIR/SHAKEN, “…call it the whole ecosystem of cracking down on us, bad traffic, bad calls, telemarketing calls.” Marashlian is a telecommunications attorney, and a managing partner Marashlian & Donahue, PLLC, The CommLaw Group https://commlawgroup.com/ and The Commpliance Group https://thecompliancesquare.com/

This episode of Across The Margin: The Podcast presents an interview with author Noa Silver, who was born in Jerusalem, raised between Scotland and Maine, and now resides in Berkeley, California. After receiving her BA in English and American literature and language from Harvard University, Noa lived and taught English as a Second Language on Namdrik — part of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and the smallest inhabited atoll in the world. She later completed her MFA in creative writing from San Francisco State University and then worked as an editor on various oral history projects, ranging from an archive documenting the Partition of India and Pakistan to a cancer researcher telling the stories of trauma experienced by cancer survivors. Her debut novel, California Dreaming — the focus of this episode — will be available everywhere on May 21st, 2024. In California Dreaming, we find Elena Berg, having grown up on stories of her mother's wild youth in California, relocating from New England to the Bay Area in 2011 for a placement as an English teacher with Teach for America. Once there, she is eager to inspire a love of poetry and literature in her diverse but underprivileged students. Her own grandfather — a Holocaust survivor — was a storyteller and teacher who touched the lives of his students for years to come. Elena's mother followed in his footsteps, leaving behind the hippie lifestyle of her twenties to become a university professor. But Elena quickly finds herself feeling disconnected from teaching, unable to inspire her students, and before long, she grows disillusioned with her career. Coming of age between the Occupy and #MeToo movements and against the backdrop of the 2016 election and California's ever-worsening fire season, Elena reckons with California as she imagined it, and California as it really is. As she does so, she must also ultimately reconcile the person she envisioned herself to be with the person she actually is.California Dreaming is a robust debut in literary fiction. It is an earnest story that encourages readers to think about how we make meaning in our lives, and how the stories we tell ourselves influence the ways in which we see the world — and our place in it. Happy New Year, everyone. While the world is on vacation, the Idiots is still working. Because that's what we do. This week, we talk about clickbait headlines, and how news sources (CNN, to be specific to this story) change the headline from the thumbnail, to the article. We're talking California coastline, waves, and a lack of surfers therein. We also discuss Scarface, and the worst line in that movie (and possibly in all of cinematic history). Also in the news: police in California are no longer allowed to ask a very specific question after they pull a driver over. What is that question? Tune in and find out. Finally: some fans left comments on our video, and we discuss them. Idiots on Parade: we mock the news, so you don't have to. Tune in and get your giggle on. Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

An in depth and irreverent look at 90's TV classic Dawson's Creek hosted by Kathryn and Katie. This week, Kathryn is INCREDULOUS because Dawson is apparently single handedly running a film set with no qualifications or experience, Freeman is gaslighting Jack and Joey and Eddie's ‘relationship' is doing something or other. Also, Audrey is screaming California Dreaming (much like Kathryn and Katie are, sorry about that) and Pacey is absent. We're chatting tips and tits, Pacey's sexy knitwear, niche references from 90's UK TV and how Dawson is Skipper to Pacey's Barbie. So, let's get into the actors studio with Dawson Leery, Patron Saint of the Creek, form then perform with a band in less than 24 hours and get so angry at literally everything. And remember, don't think, just act, and always be aware of where the camera is, people!
