Longtime political columnist Dan Walters joins us to talk about his fifty years covering state capitol politics. Walters began covering politics in 1975 - just months after Jerry Brown was sworn in for his first term as Governor - and hasn't stopped since. He began writing his column for the Sacramento Union in 1981 and continued when he moved to the Union's crosstown rival The Sacramento Bee in 1984. He has been with CalMatters since 2017. Walters spoke with us about how the capitol has changed in the half century he has been covering it, shared his favorite Jerry Brown story, and finally came clean about how he scooped the rest of the press corp on the state Budget story, over and over again. How do we fight back against the broligarchs? Journalist Gil Durán, of the must-read newsletters Nerd Reich and FrameLab, shows the way, in this week's Gaslit Nation. Jean-Paul Sartre's famous line, “Hell is other people,” from his play No Exit, written in Nazi-occupied France, captured a grievance that mirrored the era's ideological clashes—fascism, communism, and isolationism, often overlapping and competing, fueling Stalin's genocides, the Holocaust, and World War II. The solution to sharing society with others, it seemed, was elimination: kill them. This is why democracies rely on tolerance—you don't have to like my existence, but you must let me exist in peace. Yet today's tech oligarchs, having amassed unimaginable wealth, would rather invest billions in creating tech colonies and new religions to justify mass murder, enslavement, and C.E.O. king fiefdoms than address world hunger, provide free education, and strengthen social safety nets. Their vision isn't coexistence—they're building an anti-empathy billionaire bunker cult. Gil Durán, a San Francisco journalist and former editorial page editor of The Sacramento Bee and The San Francisco Examiner, has a front-row view of the rise of the broligarchs, analyzing their fascist justifications for cruelty in his popular newsletter, Nerd Reich. Durán spent over a decade in California politics, serving as chief communications strategist for Governor Jerry Brown, Senator Dianne Feinstein, Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, and Attorney General Kamala Harris. His work has appeared in The New Republic, Esquire, and PBS. He co-founded Framelab, a newsletter on politics, language, and the brain, with Dr. George Lakoff. Most importantly we discuss: how do we defeat the Nerd Reich and the Vichy Democrats? This week's bonus for our Patreon subscribers at the Truth-teller level and higher continues with Gil Durán of Nerd Reich, examining Democratic leaders as controlled opposition—public allies secretly serving the oligarchs. Send us a textIn this episode we take you to the Democratic National Convention to hear some of the greatest public speakers of the 1990s. 1. Jerry Brown, former Governor of California (and future Governor of California and future Mayor of Oakland) he was a 1992 Presidential candidate who near the end emerged to give Bill Clinton a little challenge at the end of the primary. He hit on economic inequities in the system and slammed both parties over campaign finance reform. He is a fiery speaker and knew how to stir up a crowd. the speech however was remembered for what he did not do, which was mention Bill Clinton, at all. 2. Zell Miller, Governor of Georgia, delivers the 1992 Convention Keynote address, and he does it with all the fire of Southern stump meeting, attacking Bush on his economic record, and Ross Perot on his positioning as a political outsider. He feeds the crowd plenty of red meat. Later, he would turn his fire on his own party in 2004, and famously challenge Chris Matthews to a duel on national television. 3. Reverend Jesse Jackson, civil rights pioneer and political activist, he always speaks to the downtrodden, ran a powerful campaign for President in his own right in 1988, but finds himself in a much diminished role after he made comments that offended Jewish people and found himself at odds with the party nominee, Bill Clinton, over comments Clinton made about rap lyrics. 4. Ted Kennedy, Senator from Massachusetts, he is the Liberal Lion of the Senate, former Presidential candidate in 1980 that helped rip apart the Democratic support of Jimmy Carter, and he had a long history of undermining both Presidents he disliked of both parties. He was still a formidable speaker and this speech lives up to the billing as he endorses Bill Clinton and attacks the record of the Reagan-Bush years. This is a great show if you like great speakers even if you don't agree with much of anything they actually say. But, alas, I am a Republican so take that for what it is worth. Still, I love a great speaker and raw meat politics of both sides. *This episode originally aired on December 21, 2018.This is part two of a two-part interview. To listen to part one, click here.In part two of this two-part interview, Death Row inmate Kevin Cooper, once coming within four hours of execution, details how he copes with the daily torment of impending death as his legal team fights to prove his innocence with new exonerating evidence Gov. Jerry Brown has refused to allow to be examined. For the past 33 Christmas holidays, Kevin Cooper has inhabited an 11-by-4 ½-foot cell in California's San Quentin State Prison, the last eight waiting for Brown to grant him a new hearing and advanced DNA testing that would support what federal Appellate Judge William C. Fletcher has said: “Kevin Cooper is on Death Row because the San Bernardino sheriff’s department framed him.” Cooper, at the top of the list to be killed when the state resumes executions, talks to Robert Scheer in the latest installment of "Scheer Intelligence" about the unfairness of the justice system and the difficulty of proving one’s innocence once convicted: “”Whenever you have a judge that comes forward and stands up and says no, this person innocent…this person was framed, we need to take that serious as a society.” He discusses his ongoing struggle to preserve his basic humanity: "I’ve been blessed, in a sick sense of the word. I’ve been cursed by putting me here, but while I’m in here, I’ve been blessed, because there are a lot of death row inmates who commit suicide every time you turn around. They took a guy past this cage last night on a gurney, ‘cause he was ‘man down’...Don’t know if he lived or died. But they’ve been committing suicide up here, they’ve been killing each other up here. All types of craziness has been going on up in here." Cooper explains how he has kept hope alive when he could so easily succumb to desperation and despair. He paints, writes and reads voraciously but is most passionate when speaking out against the death penalty: "When you find yourself in a fight that is bigger than you—[capital punishment] affects the lives of many people—and you can do something to help in that fight, you can’t give up...You can’t stop, you can’t quit. You just can’t do it...I did not choose this, to speak out against the death penalty; I didn’t. This [struggle] chose me."
Send us a textThe 1992 New York Democratic Primary was a knock down drag out affair between Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton and his one remaining challenger Former California Governor Jerry Brown. The two men pulled no punches as they fought over the delegates in this state , that was no stranger to rowdy politics. Brown would accuse Clinton of shaking down the Arkansas poultry industry for thousands of dollars in legal fees for his wife's law firm in Little Rock. Clinton would return the fire going after Brown's constant reinventing of himself, and the fact that he had been known for his shaking down of California business interests for years. They both went straight for the jugular and it left hard feelings that did not end after the primary was over. But Bill Clinton would win it, and Jerry Brown would lose not only to Bill Clinton but also to Paul Tsongas, who had suspended his campaign a couple of weeks earlier. That would seal the fate of Jerry Brown and finally give Bill Clinton his party's nomination for President. In California — a state whose progressive environmental policies have been the special focus of Trump's ire — policymakers and environmentalists are bracing for the impacts of a second Trump administration where Republicans have full control of both houses. Lawmakers are gearing up to use state and local government powers to safeguard the environment and communities from imminent destructive federal policies. And on the ground, community groups and activists are preparing to organize. To give us a sense of the efforts underway in the state to “Trump Proof” California, Earth Island Journal editor-in-chief and Terra Verde cohost Maureen Nandini Mitra talks with Ken Alex, director of Project Climate and former senior policy advisor on climate, environment, and energy to Governor Jerry Brown. Send us a textIn this episode we look at the daunting economic tasks George H. W. Bush has in front of him over the next year. The economy, Unemployment, Healthcare, and the ever present issues on the World Stage, are all piling up and Bush is busy putting his plans together to tackle them. We will see him in this episode start putting those plans out into the public. At the sametime, he will face the 1992 Presidential Campaign and in this episode we will hear from the long list of Contenders all vying for his job. Senators Tom Harkin, Paul Tsongas, Bob Kerry, and Governors Jerry Brown, Doug Wilder, and the front runner, Arkansas Governor Bill Clinton, all step onto the national stage in an attempt to unseat President Bush. They will receive some help too. From a Republican, who will challenge Bush from his right, in his own party, the way Senator McCarthy did President Lyndon Johnson, nearly a quarter of a century before. Pat Buchanan's candidacy would have much the same effect, turning the Republican race into a real race for the nomination and wounding the President for the upcoming fall campaign. This is “The State, Of California”, hosted by KCBS political reporter Doug Sovern, along with KCBS Radio news anchor Patti Reising. California voters rejected Proposition 6, which would have banned slave labor in the state's prisons. The ballot measure lost by about seven percent, even though a similar one passed in Nevada by 20 points. Prop 6 would have outlawed slavery in California and gotten rid of the practice of forcing inmates to work, in involuntary servitude. Inmates would still have been able to work behind bars, but they would not have been able to be forced to do jobs against their will, and for little or no money. Prop 6 lost, even though there was no organized opposition or campaign against it. For more on this, Doug and Patti spoke with Carmen-Nicole Cox, an attorney with ACLU California Action. Among other things, she has been a Deputy DA in San Joaquin County, Deputy Legal Affairs Secretary for Governor Jerry Brown, and she is an Adjunct Professor at the McGeorge School of Law at the University of the Pacific.

New investigation into California's law around homeless shelter inspections. An update on the Sites Reservoir project. Finally, introducing the new reporters on CapRadio's state politics team. Homeless Shelter Investigation In 2021, California passed a new law requiring local governments to inspect homeless shelters, and file annual reports on their conditions. However, three years later a new investigation says cities and counties are largely ignoring the new law, even as California governments are taking a more aggressive approach to enforcing laws against camping in public spaces. CalMatters Investigative Reporter Lauren Hepler and Eve Garrow, Policy Analyst for the ACLU of Southern California join Insight to talk about the consequences of this lack of oversight, and what changes could be made to keep unhoused residents safe. CalMatters is a nonprofit newsroom that partners with public media stations across the state. Sites Reservoir Update California is proceeding on plans to build its first new reservoir in decades about an hour north of Sacramento. The Sites Reservoir has faced several challenges over the years - including recent environmental litigation - but now expects to break ground in 2026 and start operations in 2032. Jerry Brown, Executive Director of the Sites Project Authority talks about the project's history, how its water would be distributed, and the criticisms that surround the reservoir itself. CapRadio Politics Team Introduction CapRadio's newsroom is expanding and boosting its presence in the State Capitol, from covering Governor Gavin Newsom, to the legislation that impacts everyday Californians and a busy election cycle this year. Politics reporters Laura Fitzgerald and Megan Myscofski talk about their backgrounds, and how they are tackling their new roles.

In this episode #81 of Work Comp Talk Podcast, Eric steps in for Carmen Ramirez to host a detailed discussion with Bilal Kassem, President of Pacific Workers, regarding the nuances and legislative history of California's workers' compensation system. They analyze how state and federal politics, including key debates between Biden and Trump, impact workers' compensation. The last significant overhaul in California's workers' comp was during Jerry Brown's tenure in 2013, with further mentions dating back to Arnold Schwarzenegger's governorship. Bilal highlights the crucial distinction that while the federal administration can influence certain areas, California maintains its independent system, rendering the presidential impact relatively insignificant. Eric and Bilal also explore how paying higher wages can correlate with a reduction in workers' comp claims and litigation, suggesting a proactive approach businesses might adopt to foster better working conditions. As the episode winds down, Eric and Bilal reflect on how despite California's strong labor protections, the system is far from perfect. The podcast concludes with a call to attention for listeners regarding the importance of voting and engaging with local legislation, as these have direct impacts on workers' rights and compensation.
