Welcome back, custmers! I recently took a vacation from the video store to go on a cruise with my wife. I've had cruises on the brain ever since, so what better time to recommend some of my favorite films that take place on ships! OVERBOARD (1987)Handyman and single-father Dean Proffitt sees an opportunity to get even with a pompous heiress named Joanna after an accident leaves her with amnesia. Dean takes advantage of the woman's lack of memory and convinces her that she is his wife and the mother of his four children. What starts out as a simple bit of revenge gets complicated as relationships are formed… and broken. Starring real life couple Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn as Dean and Annie, with appearances from Edward Herrmann, Roddy McDowall, and Mike Hagerty. CABIN BOY (1994)In this utterly bizarre comedy starring Chris Elliott, Nathan Mayweather is a spoiled and tone-deaf “fancy lad” who accidentally boards the wrong ship and finds himself sailing the seas with a grizzled crew of career fishermen. The plot is silly, the jokes are weird, and the comedy is abstract. One moment cabin boy Mayweather is talking to imaginary cupcakes and in the next, he's being rescued from the depths of the ocean by Choki — half-man, half-shark. Cabin Boy was such a box office failure that director Adan Resnick literally never directed another film. I love this movie and my wife will get in her car and leave the house when I watch it. You'll have to decide for yourself if it's for you.THE POSEIDON ADVENTURE (1972)If you've ever wondered what's the worst that could happen while sailing on a cruise ship, you'll soon find out. Due to a series of unfortunate events, the unstable ship is knocked over by a 90-foot-tall wave. Passengers must work together to find a way out of the upside-down cruise ship before it sinks to the bottom of the ocean. This multi-Academy Award winner features an all-star cast including Gene Hackman, Ernest Borgnine, Shelly Winters, Red Buttons, Carol Lynley, Roddy McDowall, Jack Albertson, and more. CITY HUNTER (1993)Jackie Chan is known for his wacky action flicks, and this may be the wackiest of them all. In City Hunter, Chan plays Ryu, a private detective hired to find a missing woman. Ryu and his assistant Kaori track the woman to a cruise ship and follow her there, only to discover the ship is being hijacked by terrorists. Ryu is the ultimate ladies man — they love him and he loves them. City Hunter is part comedy and part action. It's like if they remade Porky's and added machine gun wielding terrorists who constantly mow down passengers in cold blood. Is this film for everybody? No. But is it for anybody? Also, maybe not. Jackie Chan said City Hunter is the least favorite film he ever worked on, which made me pick up a copy and add it to the video store's library.Usually when my wife and I go on cruises the only thing I worry about is them running out of pudding or margaritas. After watching these I'll be keeping an eye out for terrorists, gigantic waves, and terrorists. If any of those things happen I'll cross my fingers and hope for amnesia. Happy viewing and thanks for visiting our video store! Thanks for reading Video Store Podcast! Subscribe for free to receive new posts and support my work. This is a public episode. the epitome of a dead lion It's the start of what we call Spooky Season in the Destroy All Culture house. To start, Adam and Aidan watched 1987's The Lost Boys, a movie that launched the careers of Kiefer Sutherland and Jason Patric, as well as instilling the notion of the Coreys as a kind of ‘80s pop gestalt entity. Topics discussed include: Lost Boys as a foundational ‘80s text; the time Aidan went to a Tina Turner concert and saw the oiled-up saxophone guy; the pleasures of seeing Dianne Weist and Edward Herrmann in a movie largely aimed at teens; and whether the whole bit with the Coreys worked.Adam's take: Edward Herrmann's vampire character actually survived this movie and ended up moving to Star's Hollow.Aidan's take: the Surf Nazis did not die in this movie. Instead, they were sent to a post-apocalyptic future where they ruled the wasteland (until they died).Note: during the podcast, Aidan wonders aloud about the identity of the punk girl who's briefly seen kissing a rat in the opening montage. According to the 80's Movie Rewind, the woman is named Carrie Stevens, a regular on the San Cruz punk scene. The rat was named “Rat-rat”.

A late era classic from director Peter Bogdanovich that would make Orson Welles proud. If you thought Mank stank then “The Cat’s Meow” might turn your crank. Directed by Peter Bogdanovich from a play (from a screenplay) by Steven Peros. Starring Kirsten Dunst, Edward Herrmann, Eddie Izzard, Cary Elwes, Joanna Lumley, Claudia Harrison & Jennifer Tilly. How is the world wrong about this movie? From Bryan: Everybody talks about Bogdanovich’s seventies movies, nobody talks about anything after that. They’re missing out! The Lost Boys – Michael Michael Michael! On our continued 80s kick, we discuss The Lost Boys, where the rules are made up and the lore doesn't matter! On this episode, we welcome the hardest-working woman in show business, Alicen Cowan, who joins us to discuss the beginning of the reign of the two Coreys. While we most certainly shed a few tears in mourning for the Head Vampire of character actors, Edward Herrmann, this movie makes for a fun stroll through the 80s, where the print was loud and the music was louder.Canadian Kiefer Sutherland makes his first appearance in an American film as the Billy Idol of vampires, and we find that vampirism and douchebaggery are NOT mutually exclusive, especially when you rock pierced ears and sunglasses at night. Even having Alex Winter in your crew can't save you from that look. Listeners, it doesn't matter if you're caught in the throes of a vampire transformation. There is ALWAYS time for blue jean sex, but not if you're wearing your shoes in bed. Here are some pro tips when dealing with paranormal beings:When you're dining at a friend's house, never balk at the cuisine. Even maggots and worms can taste great when you add a little salt and pepper.Melting a vampire in your bathtub is always a messy business and will wreak havoc on the indoor plumbing. Darth and Jason conclude that The Lost Boys eschews vampire tradition by having absolutely no solid rules about supernatural creatures, so that's fun. In fact, the only traditional aspect of this vampire movie is its strong homoerotic vibes. To that end, shake things up and remember to vote Jason Mitchell for Head Vampire 2020. He may not be the perfect amalgam of action heroes like Edgar Frog, but he will put your tax dollars to work by reinstating tradition in vampire movies .Lastly, The Lost Boys teaches us that it's okay to drive impaired so long as the only thing you kill is a vampire. Grandpa doesn't get stoned; he just has fun. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Each week on our podcast we take a hypothetical righteous movie title suggestion and turn it into a fully fleshed out movie. This week we take you back to 1993’s Hallowieners, a tale of a helpful janitor, a scrappy lil’ girl, and a small town that transforms into monsters after eating irradiated hotdogs.Cast: Thora Birch, Gary Busey, Jason Alexander, Katherine O’Hara, Edward Herrmann
We finally have our first theme week! We are recasting The Lost Boys, the 80's vampire classic, but we are only allowed to cast with 90's actors. Not the easiest task when you've got legends like Kiefer Sutherland, Jason Patric, and the Two Coreys involved. In addition to that 80's royalty, Dianne Wiest is her lovable, hippie self, and Jami Gertz is at her hair-metal-video-style apex. Edward Herrmann also has his nice-guy, single dad next door vibe really working here, until it takes a bit of a turn. We are even gifted with an appearance from Mr. Bill S. Preston, Esq. himself. The movie holds up surprisingly well, and I'm not even coming from a nostalgic point of view, as I didn't see this movie until about 10 years ago. Outside of the feathered hair, music, and lack of cell phones, everything else feels relatively contemporary. There's something about this movie that seems so...familiar. We grew up taking a trip to the beach every summer which may account for that to an extent, but this could have just as easily taken place in a midwestern town during the annual carnival or fair. During the show, the usual banter takes place, but we really dig into the semantics of what constitutes a 90's actor, and at one point I was hoisted on my own petard, which I do not appreciate. Overall, we put forth a damn good 90's cast. As always, thanks for listening! We want to know what you think about the themed episode, so contact us on twitter (@recastingpod), Facebook (facebook.com/therecastingcouch), or email us at recastingcouch@gmail.com. Also, if you have any ideas for themed shows you'd like to see, then tell us! We're always up for a challenge! Link to Amazon Link to IMDB
At 91 years old, Robert Andrew Parker can't stop making art. We sat down in his studio to talk about his 7-decade career in painting, illustration and printmaking. We talk about how a childhood bout of TB led to his becoming an artist, how he studied under German refugees at the School of the Art Institute in Chicago, the challenges of keeping his fine art career running parallel with his commercial illustration career all these decades, how he got hired as Kirk Douglas' hands in the Vincent Van Gogh biopic Lust for Life, his fascination with Kafka and the Metamorphosis, how he got started playing drums and how he felt about 4 of his 5 sons growing up to be drummers. We also talk about the worst part of his macular degeneration (hint: it involves books), why he prefers watercolors to oils, his favorite places when he traveled the world on magazine assignments, his profane correspondence with Thomas Berger (and a funny exchange with Nabokov), his astonishing "German Humor" series and why it had to be etched and not painted, how he nearly burned down a barn with nitric acid while prepping plates, why art agents and dealers need to be realists (but have a sense of humor), touring the Dardanelles with Edward Herrmann, and much more. • More info at our site • Support The Virtual Memories Show via Patreon or Paypal

Holly advocates against zombie prejudice by taking a cadaver to the prom in My Boyfriend's Back (1993). All Johnny Dingle wants to do is win the heart of his longtime crush, Missy McCloud, but his plan goes awry and he ends up a inexplicably re-animated corpse! Will his high school sweetheart still want to go with him to the dance? Listen as we: examine this rom-zom-com from the creative team behind Jason Goes To Hell; tell tales of ordering Edward Herrmann a scotch; and find out why Colin doesn't like comedies, all on this week's exciting show! On this week's episode, the gang finally finishes up the 2017 Listener Request Month by tackling the outright creepy "family" comedy, Overboard! How in the world did the police department allow this grift to start in the first place? What's with these kids constantly looking at pornography? And most importantly, what is Kurt Russell's end game here? PLUS: Michael Shannon is getting all sorts of new roles! Overboard stars Goldie Hawn, Kurt Russell, Edward Herrmann, Katherine Helmond, Mike Hagerty, and Roddy McDowall; directed by Garry Marshall.
Lyndsey selects her VHS copy of The Man with One Red Shoe, the bizarre 1985 spy comedy starring Tom Hanks, Lori Singer, Jim Belushi, Carrie Fischer, Edward Herrmann, and Dabney Coleman. This film is a 20th Century Fox Selection, which is "a selected series of films available at a special value for a limited time".
Michael! It's time to watch your VHS copy of The Lost Boys, Michael! It stars Jason Patric, Kiefer Sutherland, Corey Haim, Corey Feldman, Dianne Wiest, Edward Herrmann, Jami Gertz, and Barnard Hughes, Michael! It was directed by Joel Schumacher, Michael!
This would be an all time classic episode, if we hadn't effed up the recording about 16 minutes in! Still, marvel at the amazing chemistry between Kurt Russell and Goldie Hawn in 1987's Overboard being mirrored by Ali Goodman and Jon Wolter. Be awed as Ali forgets to set up the microphone properly. Be completely unsurprised that Jon forgets to tell the trivia that this movie was turned into a 2006 South Korean sitcom called Couple or Trouble! All this, plus Ali raps! Sort of! Overboard also stars Edward Herrmann, Katherine Helmond, Mike Hagarty, and Rowdy Roddy McDowell. It was directed by Laverne DeFazio's brother (Jon may have mistakenly said he was her husband - we aren't going to go back and confirm this) and written by Leslie "Ms. Mrs. Doubtfire" Dixon.
This might not be one of the biggest movies we've covered for the show, but almost everyone who saw Overboard when they were younger still seems to have a lot of love for it now. And with good reason - Goldie Hawn and Kurt Russell are hilarious and charming in the lead roles. In fact, they're so good that it almost makes me you forget how shockingly insane the premise and some of the set pieces are. Topics include: some confusion over what the endgame of Dean's plan is, the "special appearance" by Edward Herrmann, why Joanna shouldn't be allowed to leave the house, the words and phrases we repeated as kids before we knew what they actually meant, the uncomfortable sex scene we never thought twice about when we were younger, and much much more! iTunes / Stitcher / RSS / Facebook / Twitter / Instagram About The Show

Retta Blaney, author of Working on the Inside: The Spiritual Life through the Eyes of Actors is a theatre and religion writer in Manhattan. Her work has appeared in the Washington Post, New York Newsday, National Catholic Reporter, The Jewish Week, The Living Church, American Theatre, Back Stage, and other publications. Stage and screen actors form unique relationships with their audiences. Through their work, they challenge, teach, and inspire us by shedding light in all corners of life and connecting with us through our senses and emotions. Working on the Inside goes backstage into the inner lives of respected actors like Liam Neeson, Vanessa Williams, Phylicia Rashad, Edward Herrmann, Kristin Chenoweth and many others to reveal the deep spirituality each one relies on in their lives and work. The result is a book like no other that draws ten key elements of the universal spiritual life from the perspective of actors whose work it is to tap into the essence of life, tell stories, and reveal life's truths. Retta Blaney, an award-winning journalist now specializing in theatre and religion, was inspired to write this book by the spiritual wisdom actors conveyed in their interviews with her over the years. She dared to ask actors questions few ever do--How does your spirituality influence your life and work? How do you pray? What do you pray for? How do you stay centered in a career with so much uncertainty? And they answered her, readily sharing experiences of faith, being in the moment, listening, silence, prayer, self-knowledge, community, hospitality, ritual and transformation. The result is a book that takes readers into the private thoughts of some of their favorite actors for inspiring tips on how they, too, can begin working on the inside. http://www.uponthesacredstage.blogspot.com
