During the winter of 1777-1778, George Washington and his soldiers set up camp at Valley Forge. It was a very cold and difficult time for the soldiers. They didn't have enough food, clothes, or proper shelter to keep warm. Many soldiers got sick, and some even had to leave because of the harsh conditions. Despite these challenges, they worked hard to become a stronger and more organized army. With the help of leaders like Baron von Steuben, the soldiers learned new skills and became better prepared to fight for their freedom.

Mary Dalley's boarding house in Philadelphia is where history happened! In the early days of the Revoluiton it was called "Liberty Hall,"  and after 1787 it was "Constitution House." Gouverneur Morris lived here, had his law office here, and probably wrote the Constitution at Miss Dalley's Boarding House.  Gathered around Miss Dalley's table at different times were fifteen signers of the Declaration of Independence, 12 signers of the Constitution, future governors, legislators, the Baron von Steuben, the Marquis de Lafayette, and George Washington, John Adams, and James Madison. Adam Levinson, creator of the  legal history blog Statutes and Stories, and public historian Tim Schantz have led a campaign to mark the site of Miss Dalley's boarding house, once known as Constitution House.  Telling its history “from the boarding house out,” they show how the house reveals the relationships, and political culture that helped sustain the cause of independence in the streets of Philadelphia.Tell us what you think! Throughout the seventeenth century, medical lecturers demonstrated human anatomy by dissecting a cadaver while surrounded by students. After the Revolutionary War, though, instructors realized that they needed many more cadavers to serve a growing number of medical students. Enter the “resurrectionists” – body snatchers. Resurrectionists were a cruel lot; men (almost always men and often medical students themselves) who would sneak into a cemetery under the cover of darkness, remove a body, and then sell it to a physician or anatomist – usually for around $100.In April 1788, word of one particular body snatching quickly spread, and over the course of days, thousands of New Yorkers descended upon a New York City anatomy lab in a growing and dangerous riot. This book reveals the forgotten history of the so-called Doctors' Riot of 1788, along the way explaining the history of body snatching in the United States and England and exploring the moral questions behind an existential medical crisis: Does the need for medical students to learn anatomy on cadavers override society's demand for maintaining the dignity of its dead?As the Doctors' Riot boiled over, Founding Fathers Alexander Hamilton and John Jay and Revolutionary War hero Baron von Steuben were called in to quell the rioters, to no avail. Watch the Devotion Based on Isaiah 7:10-14 It Will Not Happen “It will not happen. There's no probable way they can win the battle.” These words could have been spoken during the Revolutionary War. When you read the history of the armed forces under General Washington's command—the untrained militiamen, the undisciplined Continental Army, the circumstances leading up to that bleak winter at Valley Forge—it wasn't going to happen. Their situation was desperate. Until a foreigner, a stranger named Baron von Steuben, brought training, discipline, improved hygiene, and increased morale among the troops. He is credited as one of the key figures in turning defeat into victory. “It will not happen. There is no probable way they can win the battle.” These words could have been spoken by the enemies of the people of Judah, during the time of Isaiah the prophet. The nations of Aram and Ephraim joined forces against God's people and had already defeated King Ahaz in battle, twice! Now they marched against the city of Jerusalem. The people of Judah had no chance. They would all die or be carried off as slaves. It was inevitable. But God spoke up and said, “It will not happen. It will not take place.” Meaning, “My people will not lose. Her enemies will not overpower her. I will do the impossible, the unexpected, and rescue them from certain disaster.” God saved his people. God even gave a sign to wicked King Ahaz to prove to him that he would keep his promise—an unexpected sign: “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and will call him Immanuel” (Isaiah 7:14). How's that for a sign? God was looking ahead to a greater deliverance, not just from physical armies that threaten to destroy his people but from the spiritual forces of evil who threaten his people. A virgin would give birth to God, who would live as a human being among the people of the world. He would save the world from her enemies: sin, death, the devil, and hell itself. Who are the enemies that stand in your way and make it feel impossible that you will get through another holiday season? Is it guilt, the guilt of knowing your words caused hurt and as a result there are people you love with whom you will not spend Christmas? Is it regret over an act of infidelity that caused separation in the family? Is it loneliness, knowing that your son or daughter will be in basic training or in the desert or the middle of the ocean this Christmas? Or will it be you in the middle of the ocean or in the desert or in the barracks this Christmas, feeling lonely? These enemies make us feel that we, God's people, stand no chance to win in spiritual battle. But listen! God speaks: “It will not happen. It will not take place.” Your sins will not overpower you. Satan's lies cannot stand against you. Guilt and regret will not overwhelm you. Loneliness will not crush you, because God kept his promise to you. The virgin did conceive. She bore a son. His name is Immanuel, “God with us,” to be our sin, to give pardon for sins, to be our presence. God with us to save us. God with us to do the unexpected and impossible. That's what Immanuel has done for you. Prayer: Stir up your power, O Lord, and come. Take away the burden of our sins and make us ready for the celebration of your birth so that we may receive you in joy and serve you always. Today, we as Americans come together in order to honor and reflect on our nation's flag, the proud symbol that has inspired us throughout our history, embodying our spirit of unity, resilience, and identity. As we explore its origins and history, we first focus on the early flags that accompanied our quest for independence and the crucial role they played in shaping our nation.Let us turn our attention to the Grand Union Flag, also known as the Continental Colors. This flag was first raised on December 3, 1775, by the Continental Army under General George Washington. At this critical moment in history, the 13 original colonies were fighting as a united front, even though all the while a significant number of the colonists were professing loyalty to the British Crown. This flag's design—a combination of thirteen red and white alternating stripes representing the thirteen colonies, and the British Union Jack in the canton—reflected this awkward and contentious duality. The stripes signified unity and common cause among the colonies, while the Union Jack symbolized continued allegiance to the British crown and their hopes for a peaceful resolution within the Empire.A common misconception about our flag pertains to the colors red, white, and blue. Many believe that these colors were chosen for symbolic meaning—red for valor, white for purity, and blue for vigilance. However, these meanings were actually ascribed years later. It is more pragmatically thought that red, white, and blue were chosen simply because they were the king's colors. In fact, the flag of each colony that flew over every colonial capital bore those colors. It's only natural, since these colors were, of course, very familiar, and moreover represented authority, making them a logical choice for the early American flags.Next, let us turn our attention to another significant flag in our nation's history — Washington's Headquarters Flag. During the harsh winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge, General George Washington and his Continental Army faced severe hardships, including cold weather, lack of supplies, and disease. Despite these immense challenges, this period was crucial for the army's training and cohesion, largely thanks to the efforts of Baron von Steuben.Washington's Headquarters Flag is notable for its simplicity and distinctive design. The entire field of the flag is blue, featuring 13 white six-pointed stars arranged in a 3-2-3-2-3 pattern—five rows of alternating stars. This design marked the first use of the multi-star pattern as an American flag, a precursor to the stars on our current flag. Unlike today's five-pointed stars, the six-pointed stars in this flag may have been influenced by European heraldic traditions. It's also quite likely that Washington specified six-pointed stars as a way to thank and pay homage to Haym Salomon, a Jewish patriot, who provided crucial financial support for the war.This flag carried a profound meaning. It symbolized unity and Washington's leadership during a critical time in the Revolutionary War. The stars clearly represented the original 13 colonies and their collective struggle for independence. Today, a replica of this flag hangs in front of Washington's headquarters at Valley Forge, commemorating his leadership and the resilience of his troops during this pivotal period.As the colonies' desire for independence increased, the need for a new symbol became apparent. The Union Jack's presence on the Grand Union Flag became increasingly incongruent with their quest for independence. This led to the Flag Resolution of 1777, passed by the Continental Congress on June 14 of that year, which established the first official national flag. Its design comprised 13 stripes, alternating red and white, and a union of 13 white stars arranged in a circle on a blue field. An interesting detail is that the outermost stripes are specified to be red.The Stars and Stripes emerged as a powerful symbol of the 13 colonies' unity and resolve. The stripes, representing the original colonies, and the stars, arranged in a circle, signified a new constellation and a unified, equal status among the colonies. Over time, as new states were admitted to the Union, the number of stars increased, while the 13 stripes remained to honor the original colonies.In conclusion, the development and adoption of the American flag reflect our nation's journey from a collection of colonies to a united, independent country. The flags used during the Revolutionary War, such as Washington's Headquarters Flag and the Grand Union Flag, played crucial roles in rallying unity and resolve. Denise Treizman is a Chilean-Israeli artist, currently based in Miami. Her work has been exhibited at PROTO GOMEZ Gallery, New York, New York; Wave Hill, Bronx, New York; Hybrid Art Fair, Madrid, Spain; Penn State University, Pennsylvania; Latino Arts, Milwaukee, Wisconsin; LVL3 Gallery, Chicago, Illinois; The Bronx Museum of the Arts, Bronx, New York; Cuchifritos Gallery/Artist's Alliance, New York, New York, Soho20 Gallery, New York, New York and PROTO Gallery, Hoboken, New Jersey, among others. Treizman has completed artist residencies at Mass MOCA, North Adams, Massachusetts; NARS Foundation International Artists Residency, Brooklyn, New York; Triangle Workshop, Salem, New York; ACRE Residency, Steuben, Michigan; Ox-Bow Residency, Saugatuck, Michigan; and Vermont Studio Center, Johnson, Vermont, among others.

Treizman earned an MFA from the School of Visual Arts, New York, and is currently a studio resident at Laundromat Art Space in Miami, Florida.  Having lived in many densely populated cities over the years—Santiago, London, San Francisco, New York City, Haifa, and now Miami—her practice has stemmed from and benefited from throwaway culture.
