In this week's episode of On Broadway, I speak with James Magruder, author of the new book, The Play's the Thing : Fifty Years of Yale Repertory Theatre (1966-2016). The book's four chapters are dedicated to one of the Yale Rep's artistic directors to date: Robert Brustein, Lloyd Richards,Stan Wojewodski Jr., and James Bundy. Numerous sidebars—dedicated to the spaces used by the theater, the playwrights produced most often, casting, the prop shop, the costume shop, artist housing, and other topics—enliven the lavishly illustrated four-color text. The work is enlivened by interviews with some of America's most respected actors about their experiences at the Rep, including Paul Giamatti, James Earl Jones, Frances McDormand, Meryl Streep, Courtney B. Vance, Dianne Wiest, and Henry Winkler.

Kicking the movies of this year off, Ian picked the 2008 postmodern psychological drama film Synecdoche, New York. Written and directed by Charlie Kaufman in his directorial debut, it stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as an ailing theater director who works on an increasingly elaborate stage production and whose extreme commitment to realism begins to blur the boundaries between fiction and reality. The film also stars Samantha Morton, Michelle Williams, Dianne Wiest and Tom Noonan. Come join us!!! Zero and Wiz RECOMMEND Edward Scissorhands Combining a gothic horror monster with a 1950s aesthetic and sensibility, Edward Scissorhands takes this odd mash-up and turns it into an allegorical story on being an outsider and the vapidness of suburban life. Edward has Johnny Depp as the title character who's scarred face, leather and buckle attire hides a very child-like, mousey demeanor. The character, as well as the house he is in, is evocative of classic horror films from the classic Hollywood era with it's exaggerated proportions and drapery of cob webs. And yet, instead of the characters being instantly terrified of the pasty, scissor mittened monstrosity, they are fascinatingly curious (save for the lady who believes he's a demon). This leads to the film having an absurdist, almost satirical tone that reminds of "Dennis the Menace" or "Leave It To Beaver" but where the ancillary characters are so paper thin they are used in the joke of the film itself. It's this tone that makes for the film's most potent laughs, whether it's the knowing ridiculousness of the premise or the way the other characters react to the Edward trying to function in this society he's being thrust in. But Edward's light tone and unseriousness of the characters is what gives the film the charm to buy in while the meat of the film gets fully digested into the viewer. What could have easily been a "fish out of water" comedy becomes a thoughtful story on how people treat those who are different and those who are willing to accept them. With Edward being a character that doesn't speak all that much, it's reliant on the other characters to do the heft of the work and it's Dianne Wiest and Winona Ryder's characters that do a fantastic job of providing it. Wiest's performance is both hilarious and heartwarming as she plays someone, while buying into the puddle deep intellectual lifestyle of suburban banality, is one of the few who have convictions of kindness and how hard it is to be that way in this setting. Ryder's character, although not as prominent in the film, also does a great job showing the societal pressures that Edward would have to conform to for acceptance. The film is beautifully told when sticking to that template, but when the film veers into the romance between Edward and Kim (Ryder's character) it doesn't quite hit the mark. That said, this is probably a call-back to movies where the ingenue falls for the beast that is capturing her and is not to be taken too deeply, but when the framing device of the film happens to involve that romance it seems like a stumble. Honestly though, Edward Scissorhands is another example of why I should probably watch more of Burton's older films. After watching Beetlejuice last year and thoroughly enjoying it, it might be high time to give his other films another chance. But for Edward, great performances and a surprisingly deep story make this more than an absurdist comedy with dark elements. It's a touching, thoughtful film about society and how skin deep it can be while claiming it's deeper and more profound than it truly is.

Stir up that cauldron and bury your undead boyfriend as we cast ourselves into 1998's Practical Magic. Did you know the origins of our double titles come from a distinctly cartoony place? Will an argument over the attractiveness of Aiden Quinn finally tear us apart? Did they really need to cram this movie into a romcom box? And can we all at least agree that the Owens women inherited fantastic hair along with their man-killing curse? (Worth it.) One thing we can tell you is that we're feeling very into sisters right now.

In Season One, we primarily focused on broad topics of kindness and compassion, while in Season Two, we explored areas such as self-compassion, self-help, and self-care. Now, in Season Three, we're shifting our focus to a specific area of self-care that we call Practical Spirituality for Everyone. We'll be delving into topics like spirituality in nature, spiritual intelligence, everyday mindfulness, the science of consciousness, the mystery of life, the science of awe, and managing uncertainty. We're excited to take this new direction and are grateful for your continued support and interest in the One Kind Moment podcast. EXPLORE OUR NEW BOOK! Send us a textKatie and Bridget do a blood pact as they re-watch the movie: Practical Magic! It's a story about love, loss, witches, possibly vampires, FBI investigations, tequila, gardening, sisterhood... Honestly, the list goes on and on for this plot-packed movie. Come along as we meet sisters Sally and Gillian, two witches that get to live with their kooky aunts when their parents both die! Thanks Death Beetle! When they grow up they experience love and loss - one through the actual definition of that sentiment, while the other may or may not have been hypnotized by Dracula and subsequently held hostage by him. When they kill him/it, plot #57 takes place where they attempt to cover up the murder that ended up not really being a murder because then a couple scenes later there's a possession... And also an exorcism... AND ALSO ANOTHER LOVE STORY! ...Guys, this movie's got a lot going on okay!? Released in 1998, it stars Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Goran Visnjic, and Aidan Quinn.
Sh*t. Just. Got. Real - This week the guys take a trip to the infamous state of Florida where it's the ultimate grudge match as they pit the motorcycle ninjas of 'Miami Connection' (who are in Orlando?) against some very Bad Boys in Bad Boys 2 (whatcha gonna do?) and the drag queens of 'The Birdcage' (Dianne Wiest infection anyone?). “Oh, what interesting china. It looks like young men playing leap frog.”Talking About The Birdcage with our guest, voiceover actor JP KarliakGet ready to fly away with laughter on this episode of Movies We Like! This week, we're joined by the incredibly talented JP Karliak, the voice behind beloved animated characters like Morph from X-Men '97 and Boss Baby in, you know, Boss Baby. But today, we're stepping away from the world of animation to discuss one of JP's all-time favorite films: the uproarious comedy classic, The Birdcage, directed by the brilliant Mike Nichols.JP shares his personal connection to this heartwarming and hilarious story about a gay couple, Armand and Albert, who run a drag club in Miami. When Armand's son announces his engagement to a conservative senator's daughter, comedic chaos ensues as they try to navigate their differences and create a "normal" family facade for the sake of the wedding. We dive deep into the film's hilarious premise, its message of acceptance, and the unforgettable performances by Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, and Dianne Wiest. JP shares what draws him to the film's themes of family, identity, and the importance of staying true to yourself, even when it's messy and unconventional.Of course, we couldn't have JP on without getting a glimpse into his impressive career in voice acting! He gives us a behind-the-scenes look at the process of bringing animated characters to life, the challenges and rewards of the job, and the unique joys of working in such a creative and collaborative industry. So grab your feather boas and get ready for a delightful conversation about a timeless comedy classic! The Birdcage is a film that reminds us to embrace our true selves, find humor in the most unexpected places, and celebrate the power of love and acceptance. This episode originally broadcast on 8/15/24. The original podcast post is here: https://pixelatedgeek.com/2024/08/binary-system-podcast-421-mayor-of-kingstown-season-2-and-poker-face/ The Binary System Podcast team appears to be on a bit of a roll lately. Just this week Kathryn finished season 2 of Mayor of Kingstown, and both Kathryn and Elizabeth have watched all but the last episode of Poker Face. That's two TV series where we're now less than a year and a half behind! We've got a lot of thoughts on Mayor of Kingstown: the things we liked (impressive as hell gun battles), things we didn't (cartoonishly evil bad guys, and Dianne Wiest is a shining star who's talents are tragically underused after the first season), and some musings about how messed-up it is that the words "profit" and "prisons" appear anywhere near each other in the same organization. To lighten things up, we go into an in-depth recap of episode 9 of Poker Face. There was a lot more peril in this episode, and we avoided spoilers so y'all can go watch it for yourself because the twists are fun as hell and it is so nice to see Joseph Gordon-Levitt in something. On a final note: people who never tip the waitstaff and delivery drivers are great big jerks. That is all. This week's outro is a clip from Atch and Hotham - Feel It, by Hotham Looking for a present for that hard-to-shop-for person? Want to buy them (or yourself) a square foot of a castle in Scotland? Hannah's picked one of Jen's faves, so how's that going to pan out? This week, we're watching Ron Howard's comedy about raising kids, that comes with an all-star cast. Does Frank deserve redemption? Does Mickey like the change of pace for Rick Moranis? And is Dianne Wiest the best thing in it? Spoiler alert on that last one - she is. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
"I don't want you to see me. I'm hideous" The Birdcage (1996) directed by Mike Nichols and starring Robin Williams, Nathan Lane, Gene Hackman, Dianne Wiest, Hank Azaria, Calista Flockhart, Dan Futterman and Christine Baranski. Next Time: Auntie Mame (1958)
Adapted from the French smash hit of stage screen "La Cage Aux Folles," this raucous farce about two VERY different families about to join via marriage was directed by the late, great Mike Nichols who directed modern classics of various genres including The Graduate, Catch-22, Working Girl, Silkwood, and Carnal Knowledge. It was a smash hit back in the spring of 1996 and was also one of the first Hollywood blockbusters to be lead by gay characters. What helped was that those two leads happened to be the legendary Oscar-winning comedic superstar Robin Williams and the Tony-winning comedic mastermind Nathan Lane who play Armand and Albert who own a successful club in Miami Beach named....you guessed it...The Birdcage. They just found out that their son Val (Dan Futterman) who just got home from college is about get married....to Barbara (Calista Flockhart) who happens to be the daughter of right-wing U.S. Senator Keeley (Oscar-winner Gene Hackman) and his equally right-wing wife played by Oscar-winner Dianne Wiest. And GUESS who's coming to dinner in Miami Beach? :)Host & Editor: Geoff GershonProducer: Marlene Gershon Send us a Text Message.https://livingforthecinema.com/Facebook:https://www.facebook.com/Living-for-the-Cinema-Podcast-101167838847578Instagram:https://www.instagram.com/livingforthecinema/Letterboxd:https://letterboxd.com/Living4Cinema/

Anyone up for a Midnight Margarita? We're breaking out our cauldron and brewing up some delicious cocktails in honor of a new Spooky Tuesday. When we realized we had a Halloween Fifth Tuesday on our hands, we knew we had to pick something special — and Practical Magic (1998) is a movie so perfect that it's almost like we made a wish for it way back in our younger days. Starring Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, and Dianne Wiest, this witchy flick is all about sisterhood, staying true to yourself, and finding true love in all its different forms. Oh, and about how it's important to have bangs at some point in your life — but mostly the other stuff. What a cute little movie! A great way to end off this October season and a perfect vibe for this Halloween! This is my first time watching this one and although I feel like I've seen it through film stills on Tumblr already. Nothing could have prepared me for how I want to LIVE inside of this movie. In the house, garden, and especially with the coolest Aunts in the galaxy. Me and Mikey covered this one and even though he's seen it multiple times, it's still every bit as exciting. Our only gripes were that the story seemed a bit weird in the middle. While we were hoping for more of a Thelma and Louise type vibe it went a bit more Exorcist. We cover the amazing fashion and incredible resume of the costume designer, Judianna Makovsky and obsess over another successful 90s soundtrack. Off-topic rants include: Mikey's Haunted House search, movie studio interference, and putting respect on Bella Swan's name and my complete shock in finding out Mikey is Team Jacob..the audacity! --- Get BONUS episodes on 90s TV and culture (Freaks & Geeks, My So Called Life, Buffy, 90s culture documentaries, and more...) and to support the show join the Patreon!
