Francis Ford Coppola's The Godfather (1972) is widely regarded as one of the greatest films of all time. Based on Mario Puzo's best-selling 1969 novel, The Godfather depicts the rise and legacy of the Corleone family, a fictional Italian-American organized crime family led by Vito Corleone and the transformation of his son Michael from a reluctant outsider to a ruthless mafia boss. The film, which features an ensemble cast of American film icons, including Marlon Brando, Al Pacino, James Caan, Robert Duval, Diane Keaton, Talia Shire, and John Cazale, explores themes of family, power, and the American Dream. It also provides a window into the relationship between law and culture while offering complex perspectives on the meaning of justice. Ryan's got a Friday solo show today with this 684th edition of Have You Ever Seen. Mr. Blandings Builds His Dream House is a zany rom-com with Cary Grant and Myrna Loy playing a likable husband & wife who move themselves & their daughters from NYC out to the country. And their house turns out to be a disaster. This film has been acclaimed over the decades, even though it's more congenial than it is funny…and an ineffective love triangle subplot involving the snarky Melvyn Douglas is completely unnecessary. But it's undeniable that H.C. Potter directed a successful (supposed) laugh-fest in Mr. Blandings, where you can't measure what you love by what it costs. Well, Actually: there already was a "Diane Hall" in the guild, so Diane Keaton took her mother's maiden name when she got to Hollywood. This week, we discuss two crime films from director Richard Brooks. The first is Looking for Mr. Goodbar, based on Judith Rossner's best-selling 1975 novel of the same title, which was inspired by the 1973 murder of New York City schoolteacher Roseann Quinn. The film stars Diane Keaton, Richard Gere and Tom Berenger. The second is In Cold Blood, based on Truman Capote's groundbreaking 1966 nonfiction novel. It stars Robert Blake and Scott Wilson as two down-and-out criminals who murder a family of four in small town Kansas. #GoodBar #history #truecrimeIn this episode we feature a return guest from 2021, Deb Berry, and we will discuss the 1970s fictional book and film Looking For Mr Goodbar as well as the actual case that was its inspiration and the reporter, Lacey Fosburgh, who covered it.Travels With the Dark: Stories from humans in the “Limit-Experience”This “special” episode is the first in what promises to be a series concerning real occurrences of human beings when they are brought into or more aptly, up against “limit-experience”, a phrase from French and German philosophers that attempts to describe in the most general way what human beings undergo when they are thrust into situations that push them to their limits and conditions of maximum intensity. While originally this was intended to be a series in the “True Crime” genre I wondered to myself if subject and theme could extended outward. It might not even only encompass the most negative aspect of human experience.I have been fascinated with the so-called "Goodbar" case yet I loved and knew about the 1977 movie and then the novel before I even knew that it concerned a real woman and her story - Roseann Quinn. It was genuine delight to talk with Deb on the subject and I honestly can't think of any better collaborator for this episode.Notes from our special guest, Deb BerryOn this week's episode, we're joined by Madame B (aka Deb) for a deep dive into the 1973 murder of Roseann Quinn, the case that inspired the Judith Rossner book “Looking for Mr. Goodbar,” which was later adapted to the film starring Diane Keaton in a sharp turn against her previous role as Annie Hall and a young Richard Gere in his stunning breakout role. While the book and film have generated much discourse over the years, most of it has revolved around Quinn's victimology, with little discussion of her killer, John Wayne Wilson, and his respective background, psychopathology and motives. So today, Mitch and Deb draw upon another book about the Quinn case, “Closing Time: The True Story of the ‘Goodbar' Murder” by the late New York Times reporter Lacey Fosburgh, to explore the lesser-discussed aspects of the crime which occurred on the Upper West Side of Manhattan during the height of an era of cultural- and social upheaval in America. Set against the backdrop of the early 1970s with the forces of the sexual revolution and second-wave feminism behind it, the Quinn murder was a perfect storm of social, cultural, psychological and even religious factors that begs examination of this complex landscape and its relevance to the murder.More about amazing Deb:Madame B (aka Deb) grew up in Chicago during the 1970s when it was disco balls, Cubs games, deep-dish pizza—and the occasional serial killer hiding in plain sight as a birthday-party clown-for-hire. Like a lot of girls at that time, she loved roller-skating, “Laverne & Shirley” and “Donny Osmond” (and she had the purple socks to prove it). But beneath her feathered hair and Bee Gees T-shirt was a secret obsession she didn't dare share with anyone—not her parents, not her teachers, not even her best friends: murder. In her public life, she swooned right along with her girlfriends over Leif Garrett and Scott Baio in issues of “Tiger Beat,” but in secret, she read “Helter Skelter” and devoured every detective show the ‘70s had to offer—“Kojak”, “The Rockford Files”, “Starsky & Hutch”, “Beretta”, “Ironside” and “Hawaii Five-0”, just to name a few. She came to see these shows not just as entertainment, but as something that held the key to understanding the danger that lurked right outside her door.Back then, being into true crime wasn't just uncool—it was weird, creepy, and not a thing that girls (or anyone) are supposed to be into. She believes you can dive into the darkest corners of human behavior without glamorizing or mythologizing it, and maybe even laugh about it now and then, as long as you know where the punchlines end.

On episode 290 of The AwardsWatch Podcast, Executive Editor Ryan McQuade is joined by Editor-In-Chief Erik Anderson, Associate Editor Sophia Ciminello, AwardsWatch contributor Mark Johnson, and special guest Kevin Jacobsen, Entertainment Weekly Content Update Editor and host of the And the Runner Up Is podcast, for part two of their Best Actress Tier Rankings. In the second part of the Best Actress tier rankings (listen to Part 1 here), the team return to the scene of the crime from last week to rank the remaining 49 Oscar winning performances, and discuss where they place them in their all-ranking. In trying to place these winners in the correct spot, the team had to come together and decide on whether to place these performances in the S (all-time winner), A, B, C, D, or F tier and explain the ranking. For the first time in the tier ranking episodes, the performances have been randomized, making the show even more unpredictable as to who will be covered from the list of winners on this episode. Also, the team has instituted two rules that include only 15 winners being able to be in the “S tier” and if an actress has multiple wins, only one of their wins can make it into the 15. Some of the winners ranked on this week's episode are Claudette Colbert for It Happened One Night, Nicole Kidman for The Hours, Meryl Streep for Sophie's Choice, Julia Roberts for Erin Brockovich, Jodie Foster for The Silence of the Lambs, Diane Keaton for Annie Hall, Faye Dunaway for Network, Michelle Yeoh for Everything Everywhere All at Once, our most recent winner Mikey Madison, Anora, and many more. By the end of the episode, some of the wildest takes of the episode start coming out, so you will want to listen all the way to the end to hear them; it's lot of fun. You can listen to The AwardsWatch Podcast wherever you stream podcasts, from iTunes, iHeartRadio, Soundcloud, Stitcher, Spotify, Audible, Amazon Music, YouTube and more. This podcast runs 4h18m. Ginny Maccoll, 73, has an unusual hobby. She competes in Ninja Warrior competitions. Last year, the Guinness World Book of Records named her the oldest female to compete. Though physically quite active from the time she was born, and a proficient dancer, it wasn't until her daughter became a Ninja competitor that Ginny started believing that she might be able to do that, too. She also competes nationally at the Sr. Olympics swim team. Ginny started dancing in 3rd grade and moved from Tennessee to New York City to embark on a professional career in dance culminating in performing in the hit Broadway Show, Pippin, in 1974. This led her to roles on TV commercials, having her own radio show and appearing in a film with Diane Keaton. Ginny's view of aging is to keep trying to do more. Keep challenging your body and your brain." You get one obstacle after another and you can't let it surprise you. CW: This episode contains spoilers and discussions of cinematic sexual violence. The film writer Jessica Ritchey returns to the show for a two-part series about two controversial films about a woman's complex sexuality, films that took a couple of decades to be rediscovered and better understood. In part one we discuss Richard Brooks' 1977 drama Looking for Mr. Goodbar starring Diane Keaton, based on the popular seventies bestseller by Judith Rossner, based on the true story of a New York City schoolteacher who was murdered by a man she picked up at a singles bar. Mr. Goodbar was a major hit for Paramount upon release, but a few weeks later it was overshadowed by another Paramount release with an even bigger cultural impact and hit soundtrack, Saturday Night Fever. Mr. Goodbar has been hard to see properly for decades due to its reputation as a misogynist, depressing film and the extremely expensive licensing costs for its disco soundtrack, until the end of 2024 when Vinegar Syndrome unexpectedly released a limited-edition restoration. Jessica and I dig into the thorny and complex issues this film presents about a woman's sexuality, partly due to Richard Brooks' determination to tell a more empathetic story than the more punishing tone of Rossner's novel (she was angered by the adaptation). Brooks may not have been the ideal person to make this film being two generations removed from the subject but nevertheless his film contains an interesting and useful critique of the patriarchy, using his understanding of New Hollywood techniques. Jessica and I also discuss the film's use of music, Diane Keaton's tremendous performance as Theresa Dunn, the depiction of all the terrible men in her life, and our responses to the shocking conclusion of the film. Part two of this discussion is exclusive to the Patreon feed: more about Mr. Goodbar, contrasted against a controversial 2003 film that could be seen as a feminist response to it, Jane Campion's In the Cut, and a 1982 TV movie about a woman in danger that echoes some of these themes, Hotline starring Lynda Carter. While best known for her seeming nonstop flow of hit albums and singles throughout the 70's and 80's, Melba made cultural history long before that, beginning her performing career as Dionne in the original cast of the musical Hair while becoming the first black woman to replace a white actress (future film star Diane Keaton) in a featured role on Broadway. In 1970, the same year her debut album I Got Love earned her a Best New Artist Grammy nomination, she won a Tony Award for Best Performance by a Featured Actress in a Musical for her portrayal of Lutibelle in Purlie – a role she would later reprise in the 1981 TV adaptation for Showtime. Soon after the success of “The Melba Moore/Clifton Davis Show,” she signed with Buddha Records, where she scored the Top Ten Billboard dance hits “This is It” and “Make Me Believe in You” and the Grammy nominated Top 20 R&B smash “Lean on Me.” Signing to Capitol in the early 80s, Melba enjoyed a second prolific decade of success with Billboard Top Ten R&B albums like Never Say Never and A Lot of Love and many hit singles, including “Love's Comin' At Ya” and the #1 hits “A Little Bit More” with Freddie Jackson and “Falling,” a hypnotic ballad featuring one of the longest held notes (nearly 20 seconds!) in recorded history. In addition, Melba's 1985 hit “Read My Lips” earned her a third Grammy nod (for Best Female Rock Performance), making her only the third Black artist after Donna Summer and Michael Jackson to be nominated in a rock category. Some of her highlights in the 2000s include an appearance in the film The Fighting Temptations (starring Cuba Gooding Jr. and Beyonce) and a role in a production of Ain't Misbehavin'. Imagine is the title track to Melba's latest (and 28th overall) album offers an optimistic vision of global love and unity during a particularly fraught sociopolitical era. Diane Keaton accidentally inherits a baby. Hilarity ensues. Actually, this isn't your typical “I don't know how to change a diaper!” comedy, it's actually a pretty sweet and incisive look at the demented work culture of the 1980s. This is where Diane Keaton and Nancy Meyers first collaborated, and it was the beginning of a beautiful friendship. Also, this movie has one* cute baby! *Actually two. At the tender age of 10, Melba notes that it was then that she was introduced to music and that “I didn't have any music in my life before my mother married my stepfather. He introduced music into our home and into my life.” From that moment forward, Melba began to develop her 5-octave, note-holding soprano that would soon bring audiences to their feet. The Newark, NJ Arts High School graduate started doing recording sessions after a chance meeting with singer/songwriter/composer Valerie Simpson (of Ashford & Simpson). That opportunity in the studio led Melba in the company of the Broadway musical “HAIR!” First in the ensemble of the show, Melba's name was tossed into the conversation when actress Diane Keaton left the show and Melba took the female lead and broke all the rules, being the first Black woman to replace a white actress in a featured role on Broadway. This week, we do something that's not featuring some washed up wrestler from the ‘80s (read: Diane Keaton), and speed-run into the future with Megalopolis; a masterclass in botched futurism and half-assed allegories created by none other than Nicolas Cage's eccentric, and exceedingly wealthy uncle. Do the metaphors fall flat? Yes. Is the acting stifled and awkward despite the talent involved? Also yes. Does this whole thing play out like a Neil Breen movie with a $150 million budget? Abso-fucking-lutely! Let's go! Cesare screws Cicero's sweetheart, stops seconds, and survives shooting! Sudden swastika stump! Labeouf and Voight! Ruining our recollection of the Romans in real time! Fifty years ago, recent Oscar winner Francis Ford Coppola returned to write and direct what was likely one of the most highly anticipated sequels in the history of cinema.....and barely two years after the original film (The Godfather) had set the world by storm not only setting box office records but winning several Oscars including Best Picture. How could any film live up to that? Well in the opinions of most who saw it, THIS one did! Returning are stars Al Pacino, Diane Keaton, Robert Duvall, Talia Shire, and John Cazale among several others in this next chapter of The Corleone Saga with Al's Michael now leading one of the most powerful crime families in the country. And this time around, he's expanding his empire further by working out a deal with powerful kingpin Hyman Roth (Lee Strasberg) to expand operations into Cuba. Of course, several complications ensue including an attempt on Michael's life which arouses suspicions towards every one around him. From there, things don't go exactly as planned as Michael's fear and paranoia take him into unexpected directions. Along the way during this 3+ epic, Coppola also presents us with the origins of Michael's father Vito now played by Robert Deniro. We follow Vito's story from an orphaned kid travelling from his homeland of Italy to New York City and eventually growing into adulthood, building a criminal empire. Considered by many to be even better than its predecessor, this would go on to win six Oscars including Best Picture. This week, we honor Shmave's request to watch Baby Boom, starring Diane Keaton… who is in no relation to Michael Keaton, whose last name is actually apparently Douglas, but he had to pick a stage name because somebody else already had that name. That's what Bob says anyway, and I'm too lazy to fact check. He's probably full of shit, but I'm not going to bother following up on this one. Bumbling boring baby boomers blending baby bites and rebuffing a billion bucks! Banishing your baby to a broken down bumpkin bungalow! The egregious Gerber grift! Bedless blanketless burka babe buffoonery! Bungling your bouncing baby and blasting her with bleach! Ovary-acting! Do we have female listeners? We don't now! Ugly kids and mom graves! Fuck baby boomers! ALF and saxophones are cousins? The Tonight Show with Jimmy Phallic!
