The hymnal prayer "Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, have mercy on us" originates from the Book of John and the Book of Revelation in the Bible, and has been incorporated into Christian liturgy by its Latin name, Agnus Dei (meaning Lamb of God) since at least the 7th century. The phrase originates with John the Baptist's declaration, who, upon seeing Jesus, proclaimed, "Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29). This was a symbolic reference to the Passover lamb, an unblemished animal sacrificed to deliver the Israelites from slavery. that Jesus is the "Lamb of God". The prayer was officially added to the Roman Rite around the late 7th century and is now a standard part of the Catholic and many other Christian masses, typically occurring during the breaking of the consecrated bread before communion. The worship of the "slain, yet triumphant" Lamb in the New testament Book of Revelation is a vision of the risen Christ, which reinforces the "Lamb of God" imagery in the heavenly liturgy. The prayer acknowledges Christ as the ultimate sacrifice, whose death provides a way for believers to be freed from the bondage of sin. It calls for mercy upon the worshipers and, in its third invocation, asks for peace. The concept of Purgatory is not adhered to by all Christians but is nevertheless a fascinating topic well worth investigating. The word "purgatory" is rooted in Latin, meaning to purify, purge, or cleanse; a place or condition of temporal punishment for spiritual cleansing after death of souls dying penitent and destined ultimately for Heaven. It is NOT considered as a place of probation, for, the ultimate salvation of those in purgatory is assured, and the impenitent are NOT received into purgatory. Jesus told a story about a farmer who sowed good seed, but an enemy later sowed weeds among the wheat while people slept. Fearing they would uproot the wheat, the farmer instructed his servants to let both grow until the harvest. At the harvest, the weeds would be gathered and burned, and the wheat would be stored in the barn. Jesus later explained the parable's meaning (Matthew 13:24-30;36-43): the farmer is the Son of Man, the field is the world, the good seed are the children of the kingdom, and the weeds are the children of the evil one. The harvest is the end of the age, and the reapers are angels who will separate the righteous from the wicked. Various native tribes in northern New York State and southeastern Canada warred amongst themselves long before the arrival of Europeans on the continent. By the early seventeenth century, new alliances were formed and the Iroquoian-Mohawks became mortal enemies of the French. On July 29, 1609—somewhere in the area near Ticonderoga and Crown Point in upper New York State—a battle took place that had a significant effect on relations between the French and the Iroquoian-Mohawks for the rest of the century. The Salem Witch Trails were a series of hearings and prosecutions of people accused of witchcraft in colonial Massachusetts between February 1692 and May 1693. The Father of New France, Samuel de Champlain, was a larger than life visionary adventurer who made a New World in Canada against extreme odds and challenges, but little is known of this secretive, mysterious, enigmatic Frenchman. During the summer of 1609, Champlain attempted to form better relations and alliances with the local First Nations tribes including Wendat-Hurons, Algonquins, and Montagnais who lived in the area of the St. Lawrence River. These tribes sought Champlain's help in their war against the Haudenosaunee, also known as the Iroquois Confederacy, League or Five Nations. The founder of New France set off with his men to explore the Rivière des Iroquois—now known as the Richelieu River—and became the first known European to lay eyes on and map one of the continent’s majestic bodies of water, named Lake Champlain in his honor.
