    332. Our Lady of Mount Carmel

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 16, 2026 10:05

July 16 is the celebration of a prominent title of the Blessed Virgin Mary — Our Lady of Mount Carmel. The devotion traces back to 12th-century hermits living on Mount Carmel in the Holy Land. She is especially known as the patroness of the Carmelite Order and the Brown Scapular. The title originates from a group of Christian hermits led by St. Berthold (1140-95) and St. Brocard (1170-1231) who settled on Mount Carmel—the biblical site associated with the Prophet Elijah (900-850 BC)—with the blessing of St. Albert, the Latin Patriarch of of Jerusalem (1149-1214). These hermits built a chapel dedicated to Mary and eventually became known as the Brothers of Our Lady of Mount Carmel. They viewed Mary as their spiritual mother and the "Lady of the place," integrating the contemplation of Elijah with devotion to the Virgin. Central to this devotion is the Brown Scapular. According to Carmelite tradition, Mary appeared to St. Simon Stock (1165-1265), a leader of the order, on July 16, 1251, and presented him with the scapular. She promised that those who die wearing it would be preserved from eternal fire. The scapular serves not as a charm, but as a sacramental sign of Mary's protection and a commitment to living a life of prayer and devotion. Feast Days associated with Carmelites: St. Berthold (March 29) St. Simon Stock (May 16) Our Lady of Mount Carmel (July 16) St. Brocard (September 2) St. Albert of Jerusalem (September 14) Feast of All Carmelite Saints (November 14) Commemoration of All Carmelite Souls (November 15). The Danish philosopher and theologian Soren Kierkegaard (1813-55) argued that the universe is fundamentally paradoxical, and that its greatest paradox is the transcendent union of God and humans in the person of Jesus Christ. Christian existentialism relies on Kierkegaard's understanding of Christianity addressed in themes such as authenticity, anxiety, love, and the irrationality and subjectivity of faith, rejecting efforts to contain God in an objective, logical system. To Kierkegaard, the focus of theology was on the individual grappling with subjective truth rather than a set of objective claims. The Feast of the Most Precious Blood of Our Lord Jesus Christ is celebrated annually on July 1st, a date fixed by Pope St. Pius X. The entire month of July is dedicated to the Precious Blood, focusing on Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, his resurrection, and the Eucharist. Origin: Instituted for the universal Church in 1849 by Blessed Pope Pius IX to mark his return from exile, later elevated in rank by Pope Pius XI in 1933. Significance: It honors the blood shed by Jesus for humanity's redemption, specifically focusing on the blood shed during the Passion and the blood/water that flowed from his side, as described in the Gospel. Liturgical Focus: It highlights the blood of the New Testament, the "fountain of salvation" that cleanses souls and is present on the altar during the Mass. Traditional Calendar: While not in the current Ordinary Form (Novus Ordo) calendar, it remains a major feast in the Traditional Latin Mass calendar on July 1st. Related Devotions: The month of July is traditionally dedicated to the Precious Blood, encouraging prayers like the Chaplet of the Precious Blood and the Litany of the Most Precious Blood. While the specific July 1st feast is focused on the Precious Blood itself, it is closely related to the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ (Corpus Christi), which occurs on a different date based on the Easter cycle. June 24 is St. John’s Day, one of the oldest and highest-ranking Christian feasts. It celebrates the miraculous birth of the prophet who prepared the way for Jesus Christ. This annual liturgical feast is also known as The Feast of the Nativity of John the Baptist, kept in the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Anglicanism, and Protestant Lutheranism. This special day observes the story of the Jewish high priest Zechariah, his wife Elizabeth, and the birth of their son John the Baptist who proclaimed the coming Messiah. The sole biblical account of the birth of John the Baptist comes from the Gospel of Luke. Only three birthdays are celebrated on the traditional liturgical calendar: Jesus (Christmas), the Virgin Mary (Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary), and John the Baptist. This type of feast is thus a rare observance & is symbolically timed and placed exactly six months before Christmas, aligning with the Gospel of Luke's account of the Annunciation. It is also tied to the summer solstice, reflecting Saint John’s humble words about Christ: "He must increase, but I must decrease." Books by Dr. Ralph F. The Nativity of John the Baptist is a Christian high-ranking liturgical feast day observed annually on 24 June by the Catholic Church, Eastern Orthodox Church, Anglicanism, and Lutheranism. It is one of only two feast days marking a saint's earthly birth (the other being the nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary on 8 September); all other saint’s days mark their deaths or some other important event. The sole biblical account of the birth of John the Baptist comes from the Gospel of Luke which states that John was born six months before Jesus; thus, the feast of John the Baptist’s birth was fixed in the 4th century A.D. on 24 June, six months before Christmas. In the Roman calendar, 24 June was the date of the summer solstice, and Saint John's Eve is closely associated with Midsummer festivities in Europe. Traditions in France & Quebec, include bonfires (Saint John's fires), feasting, processions, church services, and gathering wild plants. E122. In 1611, the original printing of the King James Version (KJV) Bible was published by Robert Barker, the King's Printer, as a complete folio Bible. The original printing was made before English spelling was standardized and there were no illustrations at all in the Authorized Version, the main form of decoration being the historiated initial letters provided for books and chapters – together with the decorative title pages to the Bible itself, and to the New Testament. The Authorized Version's written style is an important part of its influence on English, and its spread throughout North America. E219. "I Have a Dream" is a public speech that was delivered by American civil rights activist and Baptist minister Martin Luther King Jr. during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom on August 28, 1963. MLK was a Baptist minister, deeply rooted in the African-American Christian tradition, who became a pivotal leader in the Civil Rights Movement, drawing his powerful oratory and philosophy of nonviolent resistance from his faith and biblical teachings. He co-pastored Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta with his father and was a Protestant Christian, a denomination that grew from the Reformation started by the original Martin Luther, whom King Jr. was named after. Let's pay tribute to Reverend Martin Luther King Jr. on Juneteenth National Independence Day, which annually commemorates on June 19 the emancipation of enslaved African Americans.
