Kateri Tekakwitha (1656-80) was born in the Mohawk village of Ossernenon, in present-day New York State. Influenced by French Jesuit missionaries and converted to Catholicism at age 19, and after taking a vow of perpetual virginity, she left her village, and moved to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, just south of Montreal, Canada. There she died five years later, respected for her piety and good works. She was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, and canonized as a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI at St. Peter's Basilica in 2012. Celebrated on April 25th in the Roman Catholic, Protestant Anglican, and Orthodox traditions, Saint Mark's Day is often marked by reading the Gospel of Mark, which is the shortest of the four Gospels and focuses on Jesus as a man of action. In some traditions, particularly in Venice, where he is the patron saint, the Feast of St. Mark is a day of festive celebrations, including the custom of giving a rosebud, or bocolo, to loved ones. While not one of the twelve apostles, Mark was a follower of St. Peter and recorded his eyewitness accounts of Jesus's life. He is often depicted as a winged lion, and is recognized as the founder of the Christian Church in Alexandria, and is also the patron saint of interpreters, lawyers, prisoners, and Venice. Believed to be the earliest extant Gospel and the second of the four canonical Gospels and one of the three synoptic Gospels. Mark’s gospel tells of the ministry of Jesus from his baptism by John the Baptist to his death, the burial of his body, and the discovery of his empty tomb. It portrays Jesus as a teacher, an exorcist, a healer, and a miracle worker, though it does not mention a miraculous birth or divine pre-existence. Jesus refers to himself as the Son of Man. He is called the Son of God but keeps his messianic nature secret; even his disciples fail to understand him. All this is in keeping with the Christian interpretation of prophecy, which is believed to foretell the fate of the messiah as suffering servant. April 23 is the Feast day of Saint George, the anniversary of his death in 303 AD (some regions & traditions observe St. George’s Day on May 6). While most famous as a heroic Dragon slayer, the patron saint of England, St. George, is also traditionally honored as a patron of Canada, Georgia, Ethiopia, Portugal, Lithuania, Bulgaria, Greece, Egypt, and Serbia, Bosnia and Herzegovina. Influenced by French Jesuit missionaries and converted to Catholicism at age 19, and after taking a vow of perpetual virginity, she left her village, and moved to the Jesuit mission village of Kahnawake, just south of Montreal, Canada. There she died five years later, respected for her piety and good works. She was beatified in 1980 by Pope John Paul II, and canonized as a Saint by Pope Benedict XVI at St. Peter's Basilica in 2012. Celebrated annually on April 16 as a solemn feast day, the anniversary of Bernadette Soubirous' death in 1879. The Immaculate Conception’s observance began with a Papal encyclical by Pope Pius IX, when he formally defined the dogma of the Immaculate Conception in 1854. The Immaculate Conception is the dogma that the Virgin Mary was conceived without original sin. This doctrine states that Mary was preserved from the "stain of sin" from the first moment of her conception through a unique grace from God, granted in anticipation of her role as the mother of Jesus. Bernadette Soubirous' feast day is April 16, the anniversary of her death in 1879. The Virgin Mary gave her name to a 14-year old girl near Lourdes, stating: "I am the Immaculate Conception." Lourdes is a town in southwestern France, in the foothills of the Pyrenees Mountains. It’s known for the Sanctuary of Notre-Dame de Lourdes, a major Catholic pilgrimage site. Each year, millions visit the Grotto of Massabielle (Grotto of the Apparitions) where, the Virgin Mary is said to have appeared 18 times (between 11 February and 16 July in 1858) to Saint Bernadette Soubirous (1844-79). In the grotto or cave, pilgrims can drink or bathe in water flowing from a believed to be, miraculous spring.
