Discovery that Virginia was the perfect environment to cultivate tobacco led to Jamestown's success… and to a great deal of conflict between the English and the natives. Relations between the local natives and colonists became increasingly uncomfortable as more white settlers arrived in Virginia. The natives moved farther inland to distance themselves from the English, but more Europeans kept arriving. Both sides were guilty of straining the relationship. The English stole corn and other food supplies and the natives ambushed the English for their tools and weapons. Finally, the conflict erupted in the winter of 1610. E187. John Winthrop (1588-1649) was an English Puritan lawyer and one of the leading figures in founding the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the second major settlement in New England following Plymouth Colony. Winthrop delivered a sermon before he led the first large wave of colonists across the Atlantic ocean from England in 1630. The sermon is famous largely for its use of the phrase “a city on a hill,” used to describe the expectation that the Massachusetts Bay Colony would shine like an example to the world. He served as governor for 12 of the colony's first 20 years. E286. An English Puritan separatist originally from Yorkshire in Northern England, William Bradford moved to Holland with other Pilgrims in order to escape religious persecution from King James of England, and then emigrated to northeastern North America on the ship Mayflower in 1620. The original Jamestown colonists had never intended to grow all of their own food. Their plans depended upon trade with the local natives to supply them with food between the arrivals of periodic supply ships from England. Lack of access to fresh water and a severe drought crippled the limited agricultural production of the Virginia colonists. Combined with the lack of trade with the Native Americans and the failure of supply ships, the colony found itself with far too little food for the upcoming winter. E185. Eastern Virginia is called ‘Tidewater’ because the rivers moved to the rhythm of the ocean before they finally merge with Chesapeake Bay. The area between the James and York rivers is known simply as "the peninsula," and it is here that our story unfolds. The entire peninsula is rich in history. The mouth of the James River aligns directly with the entrance to Chesapeake Bay from the Atlantic Ocean. As Virginia's longest river, the James enabled the early settlers to explore far inland in search of the fable passage to the wealth of China. Exploration lead to settlement, and so the lands along the James River were the first to be colonized. E183. World War One was a global conflict whose horrendous battlefields consumed a generation of young men on Europe’s Western Front. One such man was Canadian medical doctor, poet, and soldier John McCrae. His experiences on the battlefield moved him to compose “In Flanders Fields” which became the most famous poem of The Great War. In 1622, a French explorer and interpreter Étienne Brûlé is credited with being the first European to see Lake Superior. Located between Canada and the United States Lake Superior is one of the largest bodies of freshwater in the world. In 1668, Jesuit Fathers Claude Dablon and Claude-Jean Allouez were on the Lake with Jesuit explorer Jacques Marquette, and they were the first to inform the world of the rich copper mines of that region. Other European explorers who visited Lake Superior include French fur traders Pierre Espirit Radisson and Médard Chouart des Groseilliers in 1659-60, and Daniel Greysolon Duluth from 1679–1686.
