In 1628, an English fleet left Britain for the St. Lawrence River led by the adventurer privateer Kirke Brothers. Samuel de Champlain, anxiously awaited relief ships from France to feed the residents of Quebec who were on the point of starvation. In 1629, the five Kirke brothers, now aware of the desperate conditions facing the Quebecers, demanded a French surrender of the fort, settlement and fur-trading post. English statesman, author, soldier, explorer, and a favorite courtier of England's Tudor Queen Elizabeth the First, Sir Walter Raleigh (1552-1618) was one of the most notable figures of the Elizabethan era. He played a leading part in English colonization of North America and helped defend England against the Spanish Armada. He was the younger half-brother of North American explorer Sir Humphrey Gilbert and a cousin of adventurer Sir Richard Grenville. In 1594, Raleigh heard of a "City of Gold" in the New World and sailed across the Atlantic Ocean to find it, publishing an account of his experiences in a book that contributed to the legend of "El Dorado". The Plymouth Company was chartered by King James in 1606 with responsibility for colonizing the northern east coast of America. The merchants agreed to finance the settlers’ trip in return for repayment of their expenses plus interest out of the profits made. The Plymouth Company established the Popham Colony, in present-day Maine, the northern answer to the previously discussed Jamestown Colony, founded by the Virginia Company of London. The Popham Colony was named for its chief investor and Lord Chief Justice of England Sir John Popham who presided over the trials of Sir Walter Raleigh and the conspirators of the Gunpowder Plot, including Guy Fawkes. Pioneering colonist Ferdinando Gorges (1565-1647) was a British naval, military commander, was a key figure and major promoter of the English colonization of New England, and investor in the Popham Colony. His early involvement in English trade with and settlement of North America as well as his efforts in founding the Province of Maine earned him the title of the "Father of English Colonization in North America," even though he never set foot in the New World. Elizabethan ‘Sea Dog’ Sir Richard Grenville (1542-91) was Walter Raleigh’s cousin and an English privateers who was authorised by Queen Elizabeth I to raid England's enemies, even during times of peace. The Legacy of the King James Version of the Bible is broad and encompassing, reaching the shores of North America from the British Isles from the early 17th century onwards. JWV, One of our regular Canadian viewers of the video edition of this series is familiar with the book, for, when growing up in England she remembers studying the King James Bible as a Methodist. The original printing of the Authorized Version of the King James Bible was published by Robert Barker, the King's Printer, in 1611 as a complete folio Bible. The original printing was made before English spelling was standardized and there were no illustrations at all in the Authorized Version, the main form of decoration being the historiated initial letters provided for books and chapters – together with the decorative title pages to the Bible itself, and to the New Testament. Englishman Sir Francis Drake (1540-96) was one of the many Buccaneers that roamed the shores of North America on behalf of Queen Elizabeth I in the late 1570s. He was an explorer, sea captain, privateer, slave trader, Elizabethan naval officer, and politician. He is best known for his circumnavigation of the world in a single expedition, from 1577-80. This included his incursion into the Pacific Ocean, until then an area of exclusive Spanish interest, and his claim to Nova or New Albion for England, an area in what is now the U.S. state of California.
