As Gen Z slowly but surely unearths gems in film history, one of our beloved Gen X films, Less Than Zero, always seems to escape their discovery. This is because the film is not available anywhere- when it is streaming for a few months on MAX, my various text threads light up, but alas, it leaves as quickly as it comes. One of my top 10 gifts ever received was the Vinyl LP for my Birthday 5 years ago and they can pry my burned DVD of the film from my cold dead hands. It's one of my all-time favorites and I am not alone. Everyone knows that this is Robert Downy Jr.'s best performance, that fans of the Brett Easton Ellis novel hated it, that Jami Gertz' performance was widely criticized (not by me- I love it) and that Brad Pitt is famously in the movie as a random party guest, but let's look deeper into the design, the cinematography and the soundtrack. In this episode, we begin looking at the creative elements of this film that no one will discuss with me. No one. So here I am, crowd-sourcing for as much info as possible to put into one place. Kelli and I scoured what is out there and are parsing it into 2 episodes. If you are out there and worked on this film, please know I have reached out to find you and have heard back that you will not talk about the film or I haven't heard back at all and would absolutely love to. The dark side of nature. Apocalypse Video is back and we've got a brand new theme song, baby! That is…we have two brand new theme songs. It seems we have a little controversy on our hands. Mike claims that Ryan has stolen his new theme song, while Ryan - in a surprising and out of nowhere southern accent - claims he merely took an “unrealized” theme song and improved upon it. Thankfully, the answer to this debacle may lie in today's episode, the 1996 box office hit Twister, in which two groups of storm chasers battle for tornado research dominance, with a stolen concept at the route of their hatred for each other. Will we be able to answer who's theme song is better by the end of the episode? Who cares?! We've got cows!!! I'm your host, Dave, and joining me as we blast some Van Halen and avoid getting impaled in the face with flying debris are fellow cinephiles and storm chasers Mike and Ryan. Topics of discussion in this episode include how Twister perfectly masks the sound of the audience munching on popcorn; we break down the completely unfair and shitty treatment of Jami Gertz's “Dr. Melissa Reeves” by nearly every character in the film; and finally, we compare the climax's F-5 tornado to Michael Myers as it mercilessly stalks and kills its victims. In the latest episode of the Tim Anderson Podcast, Tim, Ryan, and Lauren dive deep into the stormy chaos of the 1996 classic, Twister. From the very beginning, the team is full of fiery opinions and passionate takes that make for an entertaining and insightful discussion. The trio begins by breaking down the movie's plot—or, more accurately, plots—debating whether Twister juggles too many storylines for its own good. Ryan and Lauren aren't shy about expressing their frustration with the narrative overload, while Tim is fired up, defending the film's chaotic charm. A major point of agreement, however, is the unanimous love for Cary Elwes and Phillip Seymour Hoffman. The hosts argue that the film desperately needed more screen time for these two talents, whose performances were standout highlights. On the flip side, the consensus is that Jami Gertz's character could have been dialed back, with Ryan leading the charge on this critique. Ryan also demands that she pay more taxes. With emotions running high and the opinions sharp, this episode captures the essence of what makes the Tim Anderson Podcast a must-listen for film enthusiasts. The dynamic between the hosts—Ryan's irritation, Lauren's exasperation, and Tim's..... fiery enthusiasm—ensures a lively and engaging discussion that you won't want to miss.

This week, it wouldn't be the final episode of July if we weren't talking about a huge new theatrical release, but we're doing it a bit differently this time around as for the very first time (officially anyway) we review two movies at the same time! July's canon consideration is 1996's Twister, directed by Jan de Bont and starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Lois Smith, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Alan Ruck, Todd Field, Joey Slotnick, Jeremy Davies and Zach Grenier, but we spend just as much if not more time discussing 2024's Twisters, directed Lee Isaac Chung and starring Daisy Edgar-Jones, Glen Powell, Anthony Ramos, Brandon Perea, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Katy O'Brian, Kiernan Shipka, David Corenswet and Paul Scheer. And we're joined to discuss both by returning favourite / girlfriend of the show Ashley Olson, a self-confessed "weather girlie" for whom the original film has been a lifelong fave. It's a delightful chat as two prairie girls roast an ignorant city boy for knowing nothing about storm tracking. If you'd like to watch the films before listening along to our conversation, Twister is currently streaming on Crave and Starz in Canada at the time of publication, while Twisters can be found in theaters everywhere. Oh, you thought we would be discussing other works this week as well? Well, we're not. Two movies is more than enough, you sickos. We'll be back next week to kick off P.T.August, a month-long celebration of the works of Paul Thomas Anderson, beginning with 2012's The Master, a movie J Mo's been hauling around on Blu-ray for 11 years without ever having watched it. That all changes next Friday! So come on back now, as the rest of our PTA slate includes Phantom Thread, Inherent Vice, Licorice Pizza and concludes with our August canon entry Boogie Nights. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

In anticipation of the soon-to-be-released sequel, Anne and Ryan take a look back at 1996's original TWISTER starring Helen Hunt, Bill Paxton, Jami Gertz, Cary Elwes, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Lois Smith, Jeremy Davies, Todd Field and Alan Ruck. Director Jan de Bont's disaster spectacular follows a group of amateur storm chasers across Oklahoma, flirting dangerously close with tornados as old flames Jo (Hunt) and Bill (Paxton) flirt with each other. Michael Crichton and Anne-Marie Martin co-wrote TWISTER, which turned out to be the second highest grossing movie of 1996, stirring up $242 million at the box office. As Lee Isaac Chung's remake touches down this week, we look back at the original that started it all, along with diversions off path into The Bear, Jurassic Park, Outbreak, Nightcrawler, Los Angeles Plays Itself, Longlegs, Daddy Longlegs, and much much more!

In this episode of Overlapping Dialogue, we eagerly head full speed into the danger zone with two thrilling disaster pictures intent on traumatizing their characters and relentlessly entertaining their audiences: Black Sunday and Twister! But before we masochistically chase storms of both the physical and emotional variety, we stock up on a Blue Plate Special selection focusing on some new releases (In a Violent Nature) and filmmakers (Jane Schoenbrun, director of We're All Going to the World's Fair and I Saw the TV Glow) that hopefully suggest that maybe the spirit of cinema isn't dead after all. Eventually, we abandon all decorum and good sense by embracing the chaos of our double feature: join us as we delight in the unabashed 70s-ness of John Frankenheimer's B-movie epic (we also take the opportunity to induct not one but *two* members into our Hall of Fame, the Immune) and celebrate Jan de Bont's fabulous piece of 90s nonsense, filled with more of its era's character actors than any act of nature could every whisk away. This week G-Baby and the Usual Suspect Steve raise the flag and welcome back esteemed guest of honor (Ruth's) Chris from the Mount Molehill podcast to rap about a flick he recommended - Bad Influence from 1990 starring James Spader and Rob Lowe, a film that Chris has categorized under the sub-subgenre he coined himself "the disruptive stranger" which perfectly encapsulates the essence of the film and I'm stealing the phrase effective immediately. Join us as we dive in fin first to discuss one of the best colloquialisms of all time - in this case for the harmonica aka the mouth harp and almost get sidetracked with future plans to cover Crossroads starring Jami Gertz and Ralph Macchio.  We'll also discuss the films odd similarities to I Love You Man, and touch on G-Baby's new obnoxious Tank Girl/Aquabats/Simon Birch glasses. The porpoises, midnight companions and keen observers, ride the waves of intrigue in this tantalizing punch bowl of suspense, psychological manipulation, and moral ambiguity - just the kind of cocktail we've come to expect here at WTP. Special note - we recorded this episode the day before the terrible news of Carl Weathers' passing and we happened to mention him at the top of the episode by pure happenstance.  Besides being an iconic action star in films we've all seen a hundred times from Apollo Creed to Action Jackson to Predator to Chubbs, by all accounts he was one of the great humans in the world -- thus from this point forth, he shall be posthumously recognized as one of our patron saints.  So pour one out, rest in peace Chubbs - good night sweet prince.
