In this episode, we're digging into our all-time favorite vegetable varieties—the ones we can't imagine our gardens (or dinner plates) being without. From not one, but two improved ‘Brandywine'-type heirloom tomatoes to a cucumber that never fails to impress at the summer picnic. Carol even shares her must-have green bean variety (and tries to convince Danielle that it doesn't taste like wood). We rounded out the hour with personal stories, growing tips, and a few surprising twists on how to combat a couple of dreaded veggie pests. Expert: Fionuala Campion is the owner and manager of Cottage Gardens of Petaluma in Petaluma, California. She is also a regional reporter for FineGardening.com. In this episode, we talk with Don Shor from Redwood Barn Nursery about summer gardening - specifically tomatoes - in the context of this year's mild weather. We share successes with tomato varieties like Dr. Wyche's Yellow and Chef's Choice Orange, while addressing challenges like blossom end rot and effective watering techniques. Don offers insights on various tomato cultivars, including promising hybrid-heirloom crosses, including the one pictured - the Genuwine - a cross between the Costaluto Genovese and the Brandywine. We also discuss the growing trend of peppers as perennials, along with best practices for cultivating them and other crops like cucumbers and rhubarb in hot climates. The conversation blends practical gardening tips with personal experiences for all levels of gardeners.Previous episodes, show notes, links, product information, and transcripts at the home site for Garden Basics with Farmer Fred, GardenBasics.net. Join me for this episode of the show as Melissa Stedman, CVPM of Brandywine Valley Veterinary Hospital, discusses some unique ideas for providing veterinary care despite rising costs. She shares that her practice has unfortunately seen a significant drop in certain services like dentals, spay/neuters, and preventative care as clients struggle with increased financial pressures. To help address this, Melissa's practice focuses on offering clients flexible payment options, including in-house payment plans for established clients. Melissa's practice also uses medical credit card companies and "pay-in-four" style plans to help spread out costs. She highlights the importance of not judging clients' financial situations and instead working to find solutions that provide the necessary care. Her practice also gets creative with bundling services, such as offering discounted packages for medications such as Solensia. She reveals that they have found success in bundling routine lab work as well. While Melissa cautions against devaluing services through free exams, she believes that bundling can be an effective way to make important treatments more accessible, and she also highlights the importance of being transparent with staff, sharing details on expenses and costs, helping to empower staff to be more mindful of waste and capture appropriate charges. Her practice has also found success in offering online booking, which has helped drive more routine visits. Melissa's insights provide practical strategies for veterinary practices dealing with the challenges of rising costs while still prioritizing quality patient care and the human-animal bond. I hope that you enjoy my conversation with Melissa! This episode is brought to you by CareCredit. CareCredit understands you are busier today than perhaps ever before, so to help free up your time, the CareCredit Health and Pet Care credit card allows clients to access a budget-friendly financing experience. They can learn, see if they pre-qualify, apply, and even pay if approved all on their own. With just the tap of a link or a quick scan of a QR code, they have a friendly, contactless way to pay over time for the services and treatments their pet needs. Show Notes: [2:46] - Melissa discusses how dental procedures dropped in 2024 as clients prioritized essentials over costly care. [4:00] - Staggered vaccine appointments help clients financially but reduce doctors' average transaction values and productivity. [5:37] - Melissa stresses offering gold-standard care first and then adapting based on clients' financial comfort. [6:50] - In order to avoid costly ER visits, Melissa's clinic offers weekday care plans for some urgent problems. [9:57] - Brandywine provides in-house payment plans for trusted clients, even though there are financial risks involved. [11:18] - It's important to be cautious with high-risk payment plans. [14:07] - I reflect on having helped fund an emergency C-section, trusting the client's promise to eventually repay me. [17:18] - I want to bundle costly monthly injections to increase profits while also improving patients' long-term quality of life. [18:17] - Hear how Melissa bundles diagnostics and meds such as Solensia to boost early compliance. [20:36] - Melissa rewards her inventory manager for cost-saving efforts and educates staff on minimizing waste. [22:17] - Being transparent with your staff helps them understand costs, reduce waste, and suggest budget-friendly alternatives. [25:00] - Melissa shares how online booking increased appointments and engagement. [28:30] - It's important to have compassionate flexibility and in-house plans to help struggling but committed pet owners. Thank you for listening. Remember you are not in this alone. fWotD Episode 2982: George Washington Welcome to featured Wiki of the Day, your daily dose of knowledge from Wikipedia's finest articles. The featured article for Friday, 4 July 2025, is George Washington.George Washington (February 22, 1732 [O. S. February 11, 1731] – December 14, 1799) was a Founding Father and the first president of the United States, serving from 1789 to 1797. As commander of the Continental Army, Washington led Patriot forces to victory in the American Revolutionary War against the British Empire. He is commonly known as the Father of the Nation for his role in bringing about American independence.Born in the Colony of Virginia, Washington became the commander of the Virginia Regiment during the French and Indian War (1754–1763). He was later elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses, and opposed the perceived oppression of the American colonists by the British Crown. When the American Revolutionary War against the British began in 1775, Washington was appointed commander-in-chief of the Continental Army. He directed a poorly organized and equipped force against disciplined British troops. Washington and his army achieved an early victory at the Siege of Boston in March 1776 but were forced to retreat from New York City in November. Washington crossed the Delaware River and won the battles of Trenton in late 1776 and Princeton in early 1777, then lost the battles of Brandywine and Germantown later that year. He faced criticism of his command, low troop morale, and a lack of provisions for his forces as the war continued. Ultimately Washington led a combined French and American force to a decisive victory over the British at Yorktown in 1781. In the resulting Treaty of Paris in 1783, the British acknowledged the sovereign independence of the United States. Washington then served as president of the Constitutional Convention in 1787, which drafted the current Constitution of the United States.Washington was unanimously elected the first U. S. president by the Electoral College in 1788 and 1792. He implemented a strong, well-financed national government while remaining impartial in the fierce rivalry that emerged within his cabinet between Thomas Jefferson and Alexander Hamilton. During the French Revolution, he proclaimed a policy of neutrality while supporting the Jay Treaty with Britain. Washington set enduring precedents for the office of president, including republicanism, a peaceful transfer of power, the use of the title "Mr. President", and the two-term tradition. His 1796 farewell address became a preeminent statement on republicanism: Washington wrote about the importance of national unity and the dangers that regionalism, partisanship, and foreign influence pose to it. As a planter of tobacco and wheat at Mount Vernon, Washington owned many slaves. He began opposing slavery near the end of his life, and provided in his will for the eventual manumission of his slaves.Washington's image is an icon of American culture and he has been extensively memorialized; his namesakes include the national capital and the State of Washington. In both popular and scholarly polls, he is consistently considered one of the greatest presidents in American history. This recording reflects the Wikipedia text as of 00:46 UTC on Friday, 4 July 2025.For the full current version of the article, see George Washington on Wikipedia. This podcast uses content from Wikipedia under the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike License.Visit our archives at wikioftheday.com and subscribe to stay updated on new episodes.Follow us on Mastodon at @wikioftheday@masto.ai.Also check out Curmudgeon's Corner, a current events podcast.Until next time, I'm neural Olivia.

Eliot and Eric offer up candidates for jackassery of the week before turning to a discussion of The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston, 1777-1780, (New York: Crown, 2025) the second volume of journalist/historian Rick Atkinson's monumental military history of the American revolution. They discuss Atkinson's background as a military journalist for the Washington Post who has written books about the Gulf War, the Iraq War and covered other late 20th and 21st Century conflicts before turning his attention to writing a trilogy on the US Army in Europe during the Second World War and now the American Revolution. They discuss the depth of his research in both archives in the U.S. and UK as well as his process for researching and writing these massive volumes (each of which has taken about 5-6 years to produce) and the decline of grand narrative history in the academy (despite the public demand for it). They consider how his own experience as a journalist affected his sense of the contingency of warfare and the fact that there are always tensions between the architects of war in capitals and the officers and troops on the ground. He explains how King George III and his ministers never understood the American drive for independence and were gripped by strategic misconceptions about how to fight the war, including the notion that there was a silent majority of North Americans who supported the monarchy despite the fact that the loyalists had mostly fled the colonies to Canada, the Caribbean or London. They discuss the star crossed career of Benedict Arnold, Washington's generalship at the Battle of Brandywine in Pennsylvania, and, finally, how Americans should think about the meaning of the American revolution today as we celebrate the sesquicentennial of the war for independence over the next 8 years. Wednesday, June 11 - Host and American Family Farmer, Doug Stephan www.eastleighfarm.com shares the news affecting small farmers in America, including a focus on new research from Purdue University suggesting the surge of media coverage had an effect on the price people are paying for eggs. Plus, strong supply fundamentals are pushing cattle and beef prices higher, 70 years after an aerial war against the screwworm — we're hearing about them again. Then, Doug introduces us to Shelby Hampton-Watson, owner of Robin Hill Farm and Vineyards in Brandywine, MD. Robin Hill Farm and Vineyards is a family owned farm going back four generations, and is one of the first agri-tourism farms in the 1970s in south Maryland. Shelby went to college for animal science before returning to the family farm and, over the years, diversified the farm to include the vineyards, winery and wedding venue. They are an estate winery, meaning they are a farm-winery and 100% of what they use is produced by them — planted, taken care of, harvested, processed and bottled, and the tasting room are all on the property. Learn more about Robin Hill Farm and Vineyards at https://www.robinhillfarmandvineyards.com.Additionally, Shelby has several side gigs as an author, speaker, and rural business strategist. She writes for several agricultural publications, and one of the editorial columns she recently wrote for American Agriculturist is about something she came across during her time as an Animal Science Major in college was PMU (Pregnant Mare Urine) and it's one of the primary ingredients in hormone replacement therapy for women. It's a topic that recently came back into Shelby's consciousness when looking for another topic to write about and decided to share the information with others. You can read the article on https://www.farmprogress.com/commentary/horses-and-hormones-the-surprising-link-between-farmers-mares-and-menopause-treatment.Another venture Shelby has is The Farmed Life (thefarmedlife.org) which empowers women through resources and support to grow; and her book Grace, Grit & Lipstick: Wit & Wisdom for the Modern Female Farmer & her Farm-Curious Friends featuring stories from women in agriculture with their different businesses like entrepreneurs, solarpreneurs, small family farms, backyard and hobby farmers, and anyone linked to the farm-to-table and all-natural-ingredient movements.Lastly, in Doug's opinion segment of today's episode, he discusses the Coalition For A Prosperous America (CPA) that keeps telling us about agriculture and questions a misrepresentation of the agricultural world in America, and why it's important to get your agricultural news from actual agricultural news sources and not mainstream media.

It's been more than three years since the remnants of Hurricane Ida dumped up to eight inches of rain in just a few hours on parts of the Brandywine Creek watershed in Delaware and Pennsylvania, causing heavy damage to private property and public infrastructure throughout the region, including in Northeast Wilmington.Last week, a group of stakeholders who spent the past 18 months examining flooding in the Brandywine watershed and what can be done to address it released a draft report of their findings. This week, contributor Jon Hurdle examines the report, its recommendations, and the reaction to it.

Send us a textAndrew Cooney has embraced a very busy schedule as a musician. He plays solo gigs with his acoustic guitar across the Front Range, from Telluride to Copper Mountain to Denver to Boulder, and freelance gigs as a bass player for many groups, including periodically with Kind Hearted Strangers. Other groups he has played with include the hodgepodge country group Last Call, which features members of Brandywine and the Mighty Fines and Liver Down the River; Tenth Mountain Division (TMD), currently on hiatus; and the Bob Barrick-led tribute group Jammy Buffett. He also occasionally plays in a spinoff group called Cashmere Sweater, with the original lineup consisting of Cooney (donning the alter ego Chris Staplegun), TMD drummer Tyler Gwinn (Charles Romancin), and keyboard player Campbell Thomas (Curls Sweatshirt). Campbell has since moved to San Diego, and the lineup now includes guitar player Kevin Hinder (as of this article, he does not have an alter ego yet).Cooney built his career through consistent practicing and performing from a young age. His grandmother, a jazz and classical pianist, introduced him to the piano when he was around four or five. Also a piano teacher, she helped him start lessons, and he continued though his discovery of the saxophone, which he played in his middle school band. When a friend needed a bass player to start a band, Cooney took on the instrument for the first time, encouraged by the friend's belief in his ability. He performed in the school jazz band and in a rock band in middle school, and he even performed at places such as Disney World during high school. Charles Thomson was the Founding Father who served as secretary of the Continental Congress during its 15 years. Along with John Hancock, his signature graced the first draft of the Declaration of Independence. Thomson also designed the Great Seal of the United States. After his initial burial at the family homestead Harriton in Bryn Mawr, his remains were transferred to Laurel Hill. Thomas McKean served multiple roles in colonial days – president of Delaware, Chief Justice of the Pennsylvania Supreme Court, President of the United States Congress, and Governor of Pennsylvania, among others. Although his efforts in 1776 were what made the Declaration unanimous, he was the last man to sign that historic document. Thomas Leiper was a successful tobacco importer who built the first railroad in Pennsylvania on his property at Nether Township. As a founding member of the First City Troop, he fought with the Patriots at the Battles of Princeton, Trenton, Germantown, and Brandywine. His personal wealth helped to subsidize the siege of Yorktown. He and Thomas Jefferson exchanged hundreds of letters. All three of these men died before Laurel Hill opened in 1836, but they were all friends of Thomas Jefferson who eventually ended up at Laurel Hill Cemetery. I did the research on Thomson & McKean, while the script for Thomas Leiper was written by fellow tour guide Peter Howell.

After the hellacious shoot that was Alien 3, not to mention disappointing box office returns, it would seem that Brandywine and 20th Century Fox were done with the Alien franchise, and were willing to call it dead in space. But by 1997, Fox still thought it could get more acid blood from the Alien stone. And in order to help with this feat, they would pull from the one region where Alien 3 was successful, Europe, to get director Jean Pierre Jeunet (Delicatessen). Fox also had someone who created their show Buffy The Vampire Slayer by the name of Joss Whedon to pen a script that would somehow bring back Ellen Ripley from the dead in order to once again fight the xenomorphs. With Sigourney Weaver once again coming aboard, it would seem the pieces were all in place to make 1997's Alien Resurrection a return to form. But can admitted non Alien fan Jeunet and a pre Avengers Whedon bring the Alien franchise back to glory? Listen in as Garrett is once again joined by Matt and Adam to answer that question. And come back next week, as the boys take a break from the Alien franchise to start a special Halloween themed series. What can it be?

“If old England is not by this lesson taught humility, then she is an obstinate old slut, bent upon her ruin.” - Horatio Gates This is the story of 1777's Saratoga and Philadelphia campaigns. Playboy and playwright General "Gentleman Johnny" Burgoyne is leading a Canadian-based invasion of upstate New York–and it's a tale of egos. From Britain's Gentleman Johnny to America's Horatio Gates and Benedict Arnold, a lot of Generals are looking out for "number one." But Saratoga is more than that; its outcome will help Ben Franklin score a full-on military alliance avec la France. Meanwhile, George Washington is doing a dance with General Sir William Howe in PA. George loses battles; Howe loses his dog. And as the year's end arrives, the towering Virginian is once again being doubted and facing yet another demoralizing winter's camp at Valley Forge. ___ 2 Ways to dive deeper into History That Doesn't Suck Join our growing Facebook community Become part of the HTDS Patreon family Learn more about your ad choices.
