Today I talked to Ellen Cassedy about her new book  Working 9 to 5: A Women's Movement, a Labor Union, and the Iconic Movie (Chicago Review Press, 2022). Many people may identify 9 to 5 with the comic film starring Jane Fonda, Dolly Parton and Lily Tomlin or perhaps only know Parton's hit song that served as its theme. But 9 to 5 wasn't just a comic film—it was a movement built by Ellen Cassedy and her friends. Ten office workers in Boston started out sitting in a circle and sharing the problems they encountered on the job. In a few short years, they had built a nationwide movement that united people of diverse races, classes, and ages. They took on the corporate titans. They leafleted and filed lawsuits and started a woman-led union. They won millions of dollars in back pay and helped make sexual harassment and pregnancy discrimination illegal. The women office workers who rose up to win rights and respect on the job transformed workplaces throughout America. And along the way came Dolly Parton's toe-tapping song and a hit movie inspired by their work. Working 9 to 5 is a lively, informative, firsthand account packed with practical organizing lore that will embolden anyone striving for fair treatment. Ellen Cassedy was a founder of the 9 to 5 organization in 1973. In the wake of the sudden passing of actor Leslie Jordan, Dennis revisits this interview he conducted with Leslie in his Los Angeles apartment on October 28, 2014. In it, Leslie discusses his one-man show "Fruit Fly" which was returned to the L.A. Gay and Lesbian Center's Renberg Theater that December. Leslie talks about show's origins, the theme of a gay man and his mother and the pain of revisiting his father's tragic passing in a plane crash.  Leslie also tells wonderful and outrageous stories about his Emmy night turned nightmare, how his Emmy for "Will and Grace" got damaged, the "Dancing with the Stars" outing he'd like to forget and being mobbed by rabid "Sordid Lives" fans in Palm Springs. Leslie also answers these questions from the Observation Deck: Who was your most surprising fan? Where's the strangest place you've ever been recognized? And Have you ever thrown a good diva tantrum? Other topics include: working with Jessica Lange, writing a love letter to Lily Tomlin, gigantic pubic hair, spitting on Gary Busey on the British version of Big Brother, having his first boyfriend after the age of 50 and what kept him going through all the ups and downs of a career as an artist. About the interview, Dennis says, “I remember leaving Leslie's apartment after the interview feeling like I was high on some kind of drug, the drug of Leslie Jordan. He just made people happy on screen and off and what I find most inspiring about him is that he chose to be that way. I guess the lesson there is we all can.”

My guest on this episode is Tony Award winning lighting designer Ken Billington who created the lighting for an incredible 105 Broadway plays and musicals, including 21 productions that were directed by Harold Prince.  Ken's career spans from his very first Broadway show in 1967 when he was the assistant to legendary lighting designer Tharon Musser, to his most recent Broadway show, the hit musical, Waitress.  Along the way he designed the original productions of Sweeney Todd, On The 20th Century, The Drowsy Chaperone, The Scottsboro Boys, The Search For Signs Of Intelligent Life In the Universe starring Lily Tomlin, three revivals of Fiddler On The Roof, two revivals of Sunday In The Park with George, and the still running 1996 revival of Chicago for which he received the Tony Award. I have had the great pleasure of knowing and working with Ken for more than 40 years, and it is always fascinating, and always a delight to speak with him. Theatrical lighting design is a very young art form. Its history begins primarily in the early 20th Century -- just as the Broadway musical was being invented. Lighting design's earliest innovators include the American actress Maude Adams – most famous today for her performance as Peter Pan – and producer, director, playwright, and theater owner David Belasco.  One of the recurring themes of this podcast, and one of my obsessions, is how the art and craft of the Broadway Musical has been handed down directly – first hand – from artists to artists, from craftsperson to craftsperson.  Ken Billington's long career and especially his early experiences as the assistant to the pioneering designers Peggy Clark, Pat Collins, Tom Skelton, William Rittman, and Tharon Musser make him the ideal guest for this episode. And of course, after Ken stopped being an assistant, he eventually became one of Broadway's most acclaimed and most prolific lighting designers. And we'll hear the story of how that came about on the next episode of Broadway Nation! You can learn more about Jean Rosenthal, Tharon Musser and other great women lighting designers on Episode 8 of Broadway Nation, which is titled, “Agnes DeMille & The Women That Invented Broadway”. It's a fascinating episode and I encourage you to check it out. Broadway Nation is written and produced by me, David Armstrong. Special thanks to Pauls Macs for his help with editing this episode, to KVSH 101.9 The Voice of Vashon, and to the entire team at the Broadway Podcast Network.
