In this episode of The Learning Curve, co-hosts Alisha Searcy and Kelley Brown, a Massachusetts U.S. history and civics teacher, interview Pulitzer Prize-winning historian Rick Atkinson, author of The British Are Coming: The War for America, Lexington to Princeton, 1775-1777. Mr. Atkinson explores the rise and fall of British imperial power in North America, the radical leadership of the American patriot Samuel Adams, and the early military struggles of General George Washington and the Continental Army. He discusses the brutal battlefield realities faced by Continental soldiers, the pivotal roles of Lafayette and the French alliance, and the ideological stakes of America's War for Independence. As the nation marks the 250th anniversary of the April 1775 Battles of Lexington and Concord, Atkinson reflects on the Revolution's lasting lessons about civic sacrifice, liberty, and the meaning of American democratic ideals. In closing he reads a passage from his new book, The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston, 1777-1780.

In this episode of The P.A.S. Report's America's Founding Series, Professor Giordano spotlights Phillis Wheatley, the first African American woman to publish a book of poetry and one of the most overlooked voices of the American Revolution. Enslaved and educated in Boston, Wheatley used her pen to champion the spirit of liberty and call out the contradictions with slavery. Her powerful poem to General George Washington not only earned his respect but may have helped shift his views on Black participation in the war. Learn how Wheatley's words influenced the founding fathers, inspired Thomas Paine to publish her work, and became a rallying cry for freedom during America's fight for independence. Episode Highlights: How Phillis Wheatley's poetry reached and influenced George Washington during the height of the Revolutionary War The remarkable meeting between Wheatley and Benjamin Franklin in London Why Wheatley's legacy challenges current narratives about race, liberty, and the American founding

Jim is a former Michigan state legislator now serving as the Director of the Levin Center for Oversight and Democracy, which promotes fact-based legislative oversight as a key to the integrity, transparency, and accountability of the government. Debbie and Jim discuss the false choice between defending institutions that aren't working and tearing the government to the ground and why DOGE and the current political climate might actually create an opportunity to remake the government to be more responsive and effective. Tune in to learn about the United States's very first congressional oversight hearing led by General George Washington and about the specific questions policymakers should be asking to ensure that legislation is actually achieving results for constituents.  IN THIS EPISODE:  • [01:04] Welcome to Jim Townsend and an overview of this episode on local government, public policy, and oversight. • [02:13] What oversight truly is and what good oversight might look like. • [06:16] The very first congressional oversight meeting that happened while George Washington was president. • [08:23] Understanding the foundation of compromise that our democracy is built on. • [10:53] Identifying the opportunity for fundamental reform that exists today. • [15:00] What local lawmakers should consider about oversight on a local level. • [18:21] Policymaking and problem-solving in local government. • [23:06] A current example of oversight that can serve as a model for others. • [26:46] Improving perception around Democratic efforts to improve government rather than demonize it. • [31:14] What originally drove Jim into public service and what keeps him there today.

Valley Forge National Historical Park encompasses much of the site of the 1777-78 winter encampment of General George Washington. It is often called the “most celebrated encampment.” Adam Gresek, Director of Visitor and Community Engagement at the historical camp explained why this camp was so impactful. “So, Valley Forge was the winter encampment of 1777 to 1778. Lasted for six months from December 19th of 77 to June 19th of 78. And actually, it was one of eight encampments throughout the winter. But it's probably the most memorable and the most legendary and which is the big reason for that is probably it was the most transformative encampment of the Revolutionary War. The Continental Army marches in as one army and marches out as almost as a completely different army in many ways.” The Valley Forge Historical Park is currently preparing for a huge event on December 14. “It commemorates the arrival of George Washington's army to Valley Forge. It's a nighttime event. You can see the soldiers, you know, wrapped up in four winters, starting to set up their shelters and everything. And you can learn about what it was like for the army when they arrived.” Listen to the podcast to hear more about the people of the encampment and their impact for generations to come.      Support WITF: https://www.witf.org/support/give-now/See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Our monthly Open Conversation with military veterans focuses on Navy veterans in recognition of the the US Navy's 249th birthday celebrated on October 13. We'll have Navy veterans sharing stories, answering questions, and describing why their branch is the best.  We'll also hear from Beverly, Massachusetts, and Navy history expert Rich Pescatore on the real origins of the US Navy.  Vietnam Veteran Walt Brinker, USMA Class of 1966, tells us why his men in the 173rd Airborne and 1st Cav in 1966-1967 never used bandoliers for the M-60 ammunition. Ralph and Eric Grabowsky give us an update on their research on "Little John," the largest calibre gun in history. The origins of the United States Navy lie in the siege of Boston and the city's occupation by the British Army in 1775. After the Battle of Bunker Hill, when the Continentals sensed British vulnerability, newly commissioned General George Washington called for a ship that could patrol off shore to prevent the British from being resupplied by sea. Naval support could also obtain resources for the Continental forces. The Continental Congress wasn't so keen on a Navy. Ships were expensive and the British fleet's power was overwhelming.  Washington, then, acted on his own. On September 2, 1775, he ordered the schooner Hannah be commissioned as the first authorized patriot warship. The Hannah was a small vessel, crewed by civilians and captained by Nicholas Broughton, tasked with raiding British supply ships off the coast of Massachusetts. While not an official navy vessel, the Hannah set an important precedent by showing that naval warfare could complement the land-based efforts of the Continental Army. Following the success of the Hannah, Washington commissioned other vessels to harass British ships, but these early efforts were ad hoc, operating under the authority of the Continental Army rather than an organized navy.  On October 13, 1775, the Continental Congress took decisive action, officially authorizing the creation of a Continental Navy. The Congress passed a resolution to outfit two ships, tasked with intercepting British supply vessels. This date is now celebrated as the official birthday of the United States Navy. Over the next several months, the Continental Congress expanded the fleet, commissioning additional ships and appointing officers to lead them.  Its early successes included raids on British ships and supply lines, which weakened the enemy's war effort and boosted American morale. Constantly underfunded and undersupplied, the Continental Navy nonetheless helped secure international alliances, especially with France, which joined the war on the side of the American colonies in 1778. With the Treaty of Paris signed in 1783, formally ending the American Revolution, the newly independent United States dismantled the Navy, and its ships were sold off. Without a navy, the U.S. government had little means of protecting its commercial interests abroad, and the constant harassment of American ships by pirates and European powers underscored the need for a naval revival. Congress passed the Naval Act of 1794, which authorized the construction of six frigates, marking the formal revival of the U.S. Navy. These ships, which would become known as the "Original Six Frigates", included the USS Constitution, USS United States, USS President, USS Congress, USS Chesapeake, and USS Constellation. Right now, there is a 50% vacancy in the chaplain positions in the Oregon Air National Guard. Sadly, it's indicative of the absence of chaplains nationwide.  According to Brigadier General David Unruh, a regular listener to Generations Radio and the commander of 2,400 Airmen in Oregon, he sees a great opportunity for ministry. He hopes Generations listeners who are pastors will prayerfully consider serving one weekend per month in the Oregon National Guard -- or the National Guard of their home state -- as a chaplain.  After listening to the July 4th podcast about The Black Robed Regiment of 18th century pastors who boldly challenged the men in their church to fight for American independence, he emailed me, Adam McManus, and shared that he has passed out dozens of copies of Pastor Jonas Clark's sermon  following the Battle of Lexington to Christian officers. On May 2, 1778, General George Washington issued a unique order for the Continental Army at Valley Forge. It read, “The Commander-in-Chief directs that divine services be performed every Sunday at 11 o'clock on each brigade which has chaplains. While we are duly performing the duty of good soldiers, we are not to be inattentive to the highest duties of religion.”   Brigadier General Unruh said, “The role of ministers serving as military chaplains is older than our nation and is as foundational as any other dearly-held principle of liberty upon which our nation was founded. I personally believe all the other principles of liberty rest on Gospel freedom.” He added, “I am surprised that conservative and reformed Christians do not understand that the Dominion Mandate in Genesis and the Great Commission in Matthew necessarily imply risk and sacrifice.” He cited great historical role models who were willing to take a stand in their day like chaplains should take a stand for Christ today. * Athinasius – who boldly spoke out against the heresy of Arianism, the view that Jesus was not divine as taught by Arius. Athinasius declared, “If the world is against the truth, then I will be against the world.”   * John Knox, the Scottish reformer, who stood for Biblical truth, famously said, “The man who stands with God is always in the majority.” Brigadier General Unruh said, “Knox understood the nature of pastoral mathematics.” * The Apostle Paul who boldly preached the Gospel to Agrippa (Acts 25:13-26:32) and to Caesar. Rear Admiral Gregory Todd, chief of Navy chaplains, urged the church to help find chaplain candidates. He said, “The bulk of our ‘flock' are 18- to 25-year-olds, often faced with adult challenges for the first time in their lives. It involves seeing people through some of their most joyful moments to their most personally challenging.” The soldiers most connected to their faith “are 50%-80% less likely to die by suicide, 60% less likely to suffer depression, 80% less likely to suffer addiction, and 70% less likely to participate in risky behaviors.” So, your work as a chaplain could literally save lives and ensure that Airmen stay on the straight and narrow. If you are younger than the age of 42, have your MDiv or at least 72 hours of graduate work toward a Master of Divinity, can spare one weekend a month which would compensate you $1,200/month, then visit the website www.airforce.com/chaplain, call 240-612-7753, or email ngb.hc.hc.chaplain.corps.org@us.af.mil  To reach Brigadier General David Unruh directly, email david.unruh.4@us.af.mil  This program includes: 1. This is the third episode in an occasional series examining major counterfactual scenarios in history. The most recent installment (Nov. 30, 2023) examined what would have happened to slavery in America without the Civil War. The rebellious colonists' victory in the Revolutionary War and the high ideals of the Declaration of Independence are so integral to the American origin story that it is difficult to grasp our modern society without them. Yet, the British came close to capturing General George Washington's army in 1776 in the first major battle after the delegates in Philadelphia signed the Declaration. The rebellion might have been crushed. So why didn't Great Britain win with its advantages of a professional military, powerful navy, and advanced economy? In this episode, University of Virginia historian Andrew Jackson O'Shaughnessy discusses the reasons why history turned out the way it did. Today, we as Americans come together in order to honor and reflect on our nation's flag, the proud symbol that has inspired us throughout our history, embodying our spirit of unity, resilience, and identity. As we explore its origins and history, we first focus on the early flags that accompanied our quest for independence and the crucial role they played in shaping our nation.Let us turn our attention to the Grand Union Flag, also known as the Continental Colors. This flag was first raised on December 3, 1775, by the Continental Army under General George Washington. At this critical moment in history, the 13 original colonies were fighting as a united front, even though all the while a significant number of the colonists were professing loyalty to the British Crown. This flag's design—a combination of thirteen red and white alternating stripes representing the thirteen colonies, and the British Union Jack in the canton—reflected this awkward and contentious duality. The stripes signified unity and common cause among the colonies, while the Union Jack symbolized continued allegiance to the British crown and their hopes for a peaceful resolution within the Empire.A common misconception about our flag pertains to the colors red, white, and blue. Many believe that these colors were chosen for symbolic meaning—red for valor, white for purity, and blue for vigilance. However, these meanings were actually ascribed years later. It is more pragmatically thought that red, white, and blue were chosen simply because they were the king's colors. In fact, the flag of each colony that flew over every colonial capital bore those colors. It's only natural, since these colors were, of course, very familiar, and moreover represented authority, making them a logical choice for the early American flags.Next, let us turn our attention to another significant flag in our nation's history — Washington's Headquarters Flag. During the harsh winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge, General George Washington and his Continental Army faced severe hardships, including cold weather, lack of supplies, and disease. Despite these immense challenges, this period was crucial for the army's training and cohesion, largely thanks to the efforts of Baron von Steuben.Washington's Headquarters Flag is notable for its simplicity and distinctive design. The entire field of the flag is blue, featuring 13 white six-pointed stars arranged in a 3-2-3-2-3 pattern—five rows of alternating stars. This design marked the first use of the multi-star pattern as an American flag, a precursor to the stars on our current flag. Unlike today's five-pointed stars, the six-pointed stars in this flag may have been influenced by European heraldic traditions. It's also quite likely that Washington specified six-pointed stars as a way to thank and pay homage to Haym Salomon, a Jewish patriot, who provided crucial financial support for the war. This flag carried a profound meaning. It symbolized unity and Washington's leadership during a critical time in the Revolutionary War. The stars clearly represented the original 13 colonies and their collective struggle for independence. Today, a replica of this flag hangs in front of Washington's headquarters at Valley Forge, commemorating his leadership and the resilience of his troops during this pivotal period. As the colonies' desire for independence increased, the need for a new symbol became apparent. The Union Jack's presence on the Grand Union Flag became increasingly incongruent with their quest for independence. This led to the Flag Resolution of 1777, passed by the Continental Congress on June 14 of that year, which established the first official national flag. Its design comprised 13 stripes, alternating red and white, and a union of 13 white stars arranged in a circle on a blue field. An interesting detail is that the outermost stripes are specified to be red.The Stars and Stripes emerged as a powerful symbol of the 13 colonies' unity and resolve. The stripes, representing the original colonies, and the stars, arranged in a circle, signified a new constellation and a unified, equal status among the colonies. Over time, as new states were admitted to the Union, the number of stars increased, while the 13 stripes remained to honor the original colonies. In conclusion, the development and adoption of the American flag reflect our nation's journey from a collection of colonies to a united, independent country. The flags used during the Revolutionary War, such as Washington's Headquarters Flag and the Grand Union Flag, played crucial roles in rallying unity and resolve. The Stars and Stripes, adopted in 1777, embodied the emerging identity of the United States and continues to serve as a powerful emblem of our nation's enduring spirit and values.Steel News is hosted by Ann Vandersteel, one of the premiere investigative journalists within Conservatism. The name Benedict Arnold is almost always associated with being a traitor. In 1780 Arnold, who was then the commander of West Point, a strategic American fort on the Hudson River during the Revolutionary War, handed over military secrets to a British spy named Major Andre. However, Andre was captured and Arnold's treasonous act was discovered. While Andre was tried and hanged by the Americans, Arnold was able to escape and eventually fight for the British against his former comrades. Although, widely known as a traitor, many people don't know that prior to defecting to the British, Arnold, who had risen to the rank of Major General, had fought bravely and with great distinction for the American Continental Army and had been one of General George Washington's most valued officers. In this episode of Your History Your Story, we will be speaking with award winning author and historian, Jack Kelly about his new book, “God Save Benedict Arnold: The True Story of America's Most Hated Man”. In December of 1777, the 12,000 man army of General George Washington marched into Valley Forge to build a winter encampment.  In addition to the soldiers, more than 400 women were in the column.  They were not only the wives of senior officers but the wives of soldiers who had followed the army since it was assembled.  Join Professor Robert Allison (Suffolk University Department of History, Language & Global Culture) in conversation with Nancy K. In today's podcast journey I welcome guests Steven Snyder, aka Recluse, the host of “The Farm” podcast, along with his associate Jason with a fun filled review of a recent tour of the Occult and/or Esoteric History of Cincinnati that I recently had the opportunity to provide a tour of many of the occult and/or esoteric sites of the east side of Cincinnati. Of course here in the city that was established by the secret society that formed America, the Society of the Cincinnati, for which is the namesake of the city of Cincinnati…we made numerous stops on our tour to ancient Mound sites – as the Society of the Cincinnati had & potentially stills has a deep veneration for these Mounds. We also made a stop at the famed Loveland Castle, and fell down a deep rabbit hole of the city of Cincinnati's connections to the infamous Civil War era Confederate secret society, the Knights of the Golden Circle. Additionally, on our stop at the Loveland Castle – perhaps one of my favorite elements of this tale - other such patrons of the castle that day assumed that Recluse, aka Steven Snyder, was a tour guide of the castle…and Recluse even posed for photos with the other patrons of the self-guided castle tour. Nearby to the Loveland Castle in the Mound heavy region of the Little Miami River is the site that we visited on the tour that has long been known for the numerous sightings of a local frog cryptid known as the Loveland Frog. But our Cincinnati cryptid tour did not end there, as we visited on of Cincinnati's 7-hills…to another reported cryptid sightings location, this time with a badger like cryptid sighting often described at this park location atop of one of Cincinnati's Rome-style 7-hills. This particular hill where a badger cryptid is allegedly known to loiter…brings us back to the Society of the Cincinnati….Once again in the city that held such great importance to the secret society that created America, the Society of the Cincinnati, and its 1st President-General George Washington. As this modern day county park, where a Beaver cryptid creature is reported to loiter, and where ancient Mounds still sit on this property today….this particular land was surveyed and mapped by George Washington many years prior to him becoming the President-General of a secret society that is essentially a modern day knighthood – with membership passed down to paternal descendants of original members. And speak'n of Rome….and the last stop on the tour of the esoteric and/or occult history of Cincinnati…Eden Park. Where in Eden Park for the better part of the last century a statue once stood…a gift from the nation of Rome to the city of Cincinnati…a statue of Romulus and Remus – the two characters that star in the origin tale of Rome. Sadly, the statue was destroyed during the Mostly Peaceful riots of the summer of 2020. However, the base of the statue still exists and it clearly reads a gift from Rome….a gift from the old City of 7-hills to the new City of 7-hills, Cincinnati. Lastly, on our Eden Park adventure we discovered a monument…and I in no way, shape, or form planned this discovery – albeit I was accused of such…a monument to a fella named John L. Vance – a distant cousin of mine here in Clan Vance. Apparently, this Vance fella was a figure who played an integral role in the economic development of the rivers and waterways thru Cincinnati, which at one point in time did serve as a major metropolitan city on account of the shipment of goods and people along the Ohio river. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eden_Park_(Cincinnati) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chateau_Laroche https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Society_of_the_Cincinnati https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knights_of_the_Golden_Circle https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Loveland_frog https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alms_Park https://www.hmdb.org/m.asp?m=135213 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Capitoline_Wolf_Statue,_Cincinnati https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eden_Park_Stand_Pipe --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/jj-vance/message

In late December 1776, the American War of Independence appeared tobe on its last legs. General George Washington's continental forces hadbeen reduced to a shadow of their former strength, the British Armyhad chased them across the Delaware River into Pennsylvania, andenlistments for many of the rank and file would be up by month's end.Desperate times call for desperate measures, however, and GeorgeWashington responded to this crisis with astonishing audacity. OnChristmas night 1776, he recrossed the Delaware as a nor'easterchurned up the coast, burying his small detachment under howlingsheets of snow and ice. Undaunted, they attacked a Hessian brigade atTrenton, New Jersey, taking the German auxiliaries by completesurprise. Then, only three days later, Washington struck again, crossingthe Delaware, slipping away from the British at Trenton, and attackingthe Redcoats at Princeton—to their utter astonishment. The British, now back on their heels, retreated toward New Brunswickas Washington's reinvigorated force followed them north into Jersey.Over the next eight months, Washington's continentals and the statemilitias of New Jersey would go head-to-head with the British in amultitude of small-scale actions and large-scale battles, eventuallyforcing the British to flee New Jersey by sea. In this narrative of the American War of Independence, today's guest Jim Stempel, author of “The Enemy Harassed: Washington's New Jersey Campaign of 1777” brings to life one of the most violent, courageous, yet virtually forgotten periods of the Revolutionary War.

This week Chris is telling you the history about THE BATTLE OF BROOKLYN!! We're talking my favorite wooden tooth Homie, who was a short king that led a victorious battle in my favorite island,   Remember, we're the 13 Colonies and we got King George the 3rd telling us what's happening, what's good. We go to war with against the French, and we win it! But we're in debt which causes a King Georgie number 3 to raise the taxes. We don't know why we got to be taxed so we start a war!  The revolutionary war starts and we fight the British for freedom babes! One of Chrissy's favorite battles was the Battle of Brooklyn! This was the first major battle of the war after the signing of the Declaration of Independence. The battle took place in what is now the borough of Brooklyn in NYC, and pitted the Continental Army, led by General George Washington, against the British Army, led by General William Howe. The battle began with a surprise attack by the British on the American positions, which were poorly defended. The British were able to outflank the Americans and force them to retreat to their main fortifications on Brooklyn Heights. Despite heavy losses, the Americans were able to hold their position and repel several British assaults. The American defense collapsed, and the Continental Army was forced to retreat across the East River .. thank god there was some FOG!!  Shout out George W for being a badass leader! We may have lost the greatest land in the whole world for a brief time to the British and lost the battle, but we didn't lose men! THE BOYS ENDED UP WINNING THE WAR, so eff you 1700s Britain
