Kenneth Roberts wrote intense novels about the early years of the American Republic. He also tried to rehabilitate the reputation of American traitor Benedict Arnold.

Though the Revolutionary War didn't officially end until September 1783 with the signing of the Treaty of Paris, a key turning point in the war for independence occurred six years earlier in a small corner of today's New York state. The Battle of Saratoga stretched out from September 19 until October 7, 1777, and marked the first time the British Empire had been forced to surrender. British General John Burgoyne had stretched his forces too thin in marching down from Canada with the intent of capturing Albany and wound up with huge losses in his army of nearly 7,000. His defeat at the hands of Major General Horatio Gates and General Benedict Arnold greatly raised American hopes to gain independence and convinced France to come to the colonials' aid. The story of how the British surrender came about is told at Saratoga National Historical Park near today's Stillwater, New York. To help us better understand the battles, we're joined today by Lauren Roberts, the historian at Saratoga County, New York, and Traveler Contributing Editor Kim O'Connell, who recently visited the historical park.

Episode began streaming on October 20, 2025 at 10am2025 marks 50 years since the HSRC's history center museum's cornerstone was laid, following years of work led by John Zehner. Zehner, president of the HSRC from 1954-1978, is widely recognized as the driving force behind the historical society's success in the mid 20th century. On this episode, Russell Woolley, a lifelong Rocklander shared memories of working with Zehner in the early 1970s in the historic Anglo-Dutch Blauvelt Barn. Russell Woolley is President and Broker Owner of Wright Bros. Real Estate.  He has resided in Rockland County throughout his life and is presently based in Upper Nyack.   He has worked with clients over an extended period and has participated in community activities through service and philanthropy.  John Zehner was a civil engineer by profession.  He played a pivotal role in the establishment and leadership of the Historical Society of Rockland County. His contributions significantly expanded the society's membership and led to the establishment of a permanent museum building, thereby preserving local history for future generations.Mr. Zehner became affiliated with the historical society in the 1960s when he was appointed as the librarian responsible for managing its book collection.  Mr. Zehner had a deep knowledge and enduring interest in local and American history, which led him to the most important and long-standing volunteer commitment of his life.Under Mr. Under Zehner's leadership, the society purchased the Jacob Blauvelt Homestead in 1970 as a permanent headquarters.   Then, he led the society in planning and building a fireproof museum in 1977. During his presidency from 1954 to 1978, the society's membership grew to over 1850, making it one of the most successful in the tri-state rural area.Mr. Zehner authored texts on local history, including a 1995 book on Benedict Arnold's attempted betrayal, and supported numerous publications and historical markers. This Day in Legal History: John André ConvictedOn September 29, 1780, Major John André of the British Army was convicted by a Continental Army court martial for his role in a conspiracy with American General Benedict Arnold. André had been captured behind American lines near Tarrytown, New York, carrying incriminating documents that detailed Arnold's treasonous plan to surrender the key American fort at West Point to the British. Disguised in civilian clothes and using a false passport, André was found to be operating as a spy rather than a conventional enemy officer.General George Washington ordered the formation of a board of senior officers, including Generals Nathanael Greene and Marquis de Lafayette, to determine André's fate. The court martial found him guilty of acting under false pretenses and ruled that he should be hanged as a spy rather than shot as a soldier—a distinction of enormous symbolic and legal consequence. Despite André's honorable conduct and appeals for a more dignified execution, Washington upheld the sentence.André's execution, carried out on October 2, 1780, marked a turning point in the American Revolution's approach to wartime law, espionage, and loyalty. It also crystallized the betrayal of Benedict Arnold, whose escape to British lines allowed him to avoid prosecution. The case highlighted how military justice operated during wartime, often blending evidentiary hearings with moral and strategic considerations. The outcome emphasized the seriousness with which the Continental Army treated the laws of war, especially in cases of clandestine operations and treason.The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration, allowing it to withhold roughly $4 billion in foreign aid despite Congress having already appropriated the funds. The aid was intended for programs including United Nations peacekeeping and global democracy-promotion efforts. The ruling came after a lower court, led by Judge Amir Ali, had ordered the administration to release the funds, siding with aid groups that filed the lawsuit. In a brief, unsigned order, the Supreme Court questioned whether those groups had legal standing and warned that enforcing the lower court's ruling could infringe on the president's authority over foreign policy.The court's three liberal justices dissented, with Justice Elena Kagan criticizing the majority for undermining the Constitution's separation of powers. She argued that once Congress passes appropriations laws, the executive branch is legally required to carry them out unless Congress acts to change them. The Trump administration defended its actions as aligned with its “America First” foreign policy, claiming the spending conflicted with current U.S. interests. To withhold the funds, it used a “pocket rescission” strategy—an obscure method to delay spending long enough for the funds to expire.This decision reflects a broader trend of the Supreme Court supporting Trump-era policies, especially those halted by lower courts. Critics warn the ruling could set a precedent that weakens congressional control over federal spending. Under proposed rule changes, that authority would shift to the Texas Supreme Court itself. The court would use what it calls “simple, objective, and ideologically neutral criteria,” such as bar passage rates, rather than relying on the ABA's existing standards.While the justices don't expect immediate changes to the current list of approved schools, the proposal marks a significant shift in how legal education could be regulated in Texas. Public comments will be accepted through December 1, with the rules potentially taking effect on January 1, 2026. The move comes amid broader conservative criticism of the ABA, particularly its diversity and inclusion standards, which have drawn opposition from the Trump administration and other Republican-led states like Florida and Ohio.Texas Chief Justice Jimmy Blacklock criticized the ABA for lacking ideological neutrality, saying it no longer represents the views of all lawyers. This represents a sharp departure from over a century of constitutional understanding, which has granted citizenship to nearly all individuals born in the country, regardless of their parents' status.Trump's legal team argues that the 14th Amendment was intended to apply only to children of those fully subject to U.S. jurisdiction—namely, citizens or lawful permanent residents—not to the children of temporary visa holders or undocumented immigrants. The administration is appealing a decision from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which rejected the executive order as an unconstitutional reinterpretation of settled law.This appeal marks the first time the Supreme Court is being asked to rule directly on the legality of such a restriction. In past cases, such as United States v. Wong Kim Ark (1898), the Court upheld citizenship for those born in the U.S. to noncitizen parents. GAME TIME! FSF PopCast RPG #35 RPG Session 35 Last Session - We were Hunted! Let's see what the GM has in store for us tonight. Tonight's story - Near Miss on Nar Shadaa Following a meeting with the villainous Perla The Hutt, our adventurers attempt to flee the dastardly planet of Nar Shadaa. Being hunted by Imperial troops and Bounty Hunters galore, the team found themselves separated while en route to their ship. After a harrowing speeder run back to the ship, Bokane and Yudex are met face to face with the Benedict Arnold of the Galaxy as No No Notchu attempts to turn in his one-time companions. With Kyle's life in the balance, which wasn't that great of a concern, Bokane was able to flex his Jedi powers and avert disaster. With the remaining crew of Edna, SCR-V and Zapp flying and sneaking through the populous streets of Nar Shadaa, they too managed to return to the ship unscathed. Once loaded with their gear, our brawny and beautiful heroes managed a smooth exit and return to Pivot, with a fresh shipment of supplies for the scattered cells of the growing rebellion. Pivot has given our adventurer their next task and with it, the means to send a mighty blow to the Empire with their journey leading them into the next foray on Correlia. Tonight's story - Near Miss on Nar Shadaa Following a meeting with the villainous Perla The Hutt, our adventurers attempt to flee the dastardly planet of Nar Shadaa. Being hunted by Imperial troops and Bounty Hunters galore, the team found themselves separated while en route to their ship. After a harrowing speeder run back to the ship, Bokane and Yudex are met face to face with the Benedict Arnold of the Galaxy as No No Notchu attempts to turn in his one-time companions. With Kyle's life in the balance, which wasn't that great of a concern, Bokane was able to flex his Jedi powers and avert disaster. With the remaining crew of Edna, SCR-V and Zapp flying and sneaking through the populous streets of Nar Shadaa, they too managed to return to the ship unscathed. Once loaded with their gear, our brawny and beautiful heroes managed a smooth exit and return to Pivot, with a fresh shipment of supplies for the scattered cells of the growing rebellion. Pivot has given our adventurer their next task and with it, the means to send a mighty blow to the Empire with their journey leading them into the next foray on Correlia. The quick answer is, in one way or another, they are all controversial figures. This list includes lawyers, political figures, athletes, an NBA owner, a referee, a military hero, and even an actor. So, what do these individuals have in common beyond being controversial? They have all, in one way or another, violated societal trust in ways that led to lifetime bans for their actions. The lawyers were disbarred for unethical practice, the athletes for gambling, the political and military figures for treason, and, yes, Ben Affleck received a lifetime ban from certain casinos for card counting while playing blackjack. Perhaps society may one day change its opinion and forgive them. Not so with the sin Jesus described in the passage we'll study today. Jesus addressed an astounded crowd, who had just witnessed Him miraculously cleanse a demon-possessed man. This dramatic event led to a broader conversation about sin, and one particular sin that would spark theological debate for centuries to come. In this raw, unfiltered conversation with LFTG Radio, Power exposes the dark underbelly of Staten Island's Park Hill neighborhood, where loyalty has become a forgotten virtue and federal informants walk freely among their victims.With unflinching directness, Power names the individuals he claims have cooperated with authorities and sent dozens of community members to prison with sentences ranging from 40 to 100 years. Eliot and Eric offer up candidates for jackassery of the week before turning to a discussion of The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston, 1777-1780, (New York: Crown, 2025) the second volume of journalist/historian Rick Atkinson's monumental military history of the American revolution. They discuss Atkinson's background as a military journalist for the Washington Post who has written books about the Gulf War, the Iraq War and covered other late 20th and 21st Century conflicts before turning his attention to writing a trilogy on the US Army in Europe during the Second World War and now the American Revolution.  They discuss the depth of his research in both archives in the U.S. and UK as well as his process for researching and writing these massive volumes (each of which has taken about 5-6 years to produce) and the decline of grand narrative history in the academy (despite the public demand for it). They consider how his own experience as a journalist affected his sense of the contingency of warfare and the fact that there are always tensions between the architects of war in capitals and the officers and troops on the ground. He explains how King George III and his ministers never understood the American drive for independence and were gripped by strategic misconceptions about how to fight the war, including the notion that there was a silent majority of North Americans who supported the monarchy despite the fact that the loyalists had mostly fled the colonies to Canada, the Caribbean or London. They discuss the star crossed career of Benedict Arnold, Washington's generalship at the Battle of Brandywine in Pennsylvania, and, finally, how Americans should think about the meaning of the American revolution today as we celebrate the sesquicentennial of the war for independence over the next 8 years.
