Plausibly Live! - The Official Podcast of The Dave Bowman Show

Welcome back to Powder to Parchment on WREV 760AM, where we bring you Revolutionary Talk straight from the heart of 1775. Today we turn our attention to Benedict Arnold, and not the man remembered for betrayal, but the soldier who was still a hero.On October 3, 1775, Arnold and more than a thousand men began their march north through the wilds of Maine, bound for Quebec. They carried bateaux that leaked, maps that lied, and provisions that would soon rot, yet they carried also the hopes of General Washington and the survival of the Revolution.Arnold had already seized Fort Ticonderoga, yet Congress treated him with suspicion and scorn. Washington, however, saw fire and trusted him with a bold gamble. If Quebec could be taken, Canada might join the American cause. This is the story of ambition, boldness, and the making of a Revolutionary hero.

This Day in Legal History: John André ConvictedOn September 29, 1780, Major John André of the British Army was convicted by a Continental Army court martial for his role in a conspiracy with American General Benedict Arnold. André had been captured behind American lines near Tarrytown, New York, carrying incriminating documents that detailed Arnold's treasonous plan to surrender the key American fort at West Point to the British. Disguised in civilian clothes and using a false passport, André was found to be operating as a spy rather than a conventional enemy officer.General George Washington ordered the formation of a board of senior officers, including Generals Nathanael Greene and Marquis de Lafayette, to determine André's fate. The court martial found him guilty of acting under false pretenses and ruled that he should be hanged as a spy rather than shot as a soldier—a distinction of enormous symbolic and legal consequence. Despite André's honorable conduct and appeals for a more dignified execution, Washington upheld the sentence.André's execution, carried out on October 2, 1780, marked a turning point in the American Revolution's approach to wartime law, espionage, and loyalty. It also crystallized the betrayal of Benedict Arnold, whose escape to British lines allowed him to avoid prosecution. The case highlighted how military justice operated during wartime, often blending evidentiary hearings with moral and strategic considerations. The outcome emphasized the seriousness with which the Continental Army treated the laws of war, especially in cases of clandestine operations and treason. The U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of the Trump administration, allowing it to withhold roughly $4 billion in foreign aid despite Congress having already appropriated the funds. The aid was intended for programs including United Nations peacekeeping and global democracy-promotion efforts. The ruling came after a lower court, led by Judge Amir Ali, had ordered the administration to release the funds, siding with aid groups that filed the lawsuit. In a brief, unsigned order, the Supreme Court questioned whether those groups had legal standing and warned that enforcing the lower court's ruling could infringe on the president's authority over foreign policy. The court's three liberal justices dissented, with Justice Elena Kagan criticizing the majority for undermining the Constitution's separation of powers. She argued that once Congress passes appropriations laws, the executive branch is legally required to carry them out unless Congress acts to change them. The Trump administration defended its actions as aligned with its “America First” foreign policy, claiming the spending conflicted with current U.S. interests. To withhold the funds, it used a “pocket rescission” strategy—an obscure method to delay spending long enough for the funds to expire. This decision reflects a broader trend of the Supreme Court supporting Trump-era policies, especially those halted by lower courts. Critics warn the ruling could set a precedent that weakens congressional control over federal spending. Legal scholars note that Trump's withholding of appropriated funds through this method is without historical precedent and could have significant humanitarian consequences globally.US Supreme Court lets Trump withhold $4 billion in foreign aid | ReutersThe Texas Supreme Court issued a preliminary opinion suggesting that the American Bar Association (ABA) should no longer control which Texas law schools qualify to send graduates to the state bar exam. Under proposed rule changes, that authority would shift to the Texas Supreme Court itself. The court would use what it calls “simple, objective, and ideologically neutral criteria,” such as bar passage rates, rather than relying on the ABA's existing standards. While the justices don't expect immediate changes to the current list of approved schools, the proposal marks a significant shift in how legal education could be regulated in Texas. Public comments will be accepted through December 1, with the rules potentially taking effect on January 1, 2026. The move comes amid broader conservative criticism of the ABA, particularly its diversity and inclusion standards, which have drawn opposition from the Trump administration and other Republican-led states like Florida and Ohio.Texas Chief Justice Jimmy Blacklock criticized the ABA for lacking ideological neutrality, saying it no longer represents the views of all lawyers. In response, eight out of ten Texas law school deans warned that severing ties with the ABA could damage national reputations and reduce access to quality legal services in the state.ABA Accreditation Should End in Texas, Justices Say TentativelyPresident Trump has formally asked the U.S. Supreme Court to uphold his executive order seeking to limit birthright citizenship, directly challenging longstanding interpretations of the 14th Amendment. His proposal would deny automatic U.S. citizenship to children born on U.S. soil unless at least one parent is a citizen or permanent resident. This represents a sharp departure from over a century of constitutional understanding, which has granted citizenship to nearly all individuals born in the country, regardless of their parents' status.Trump's legal team argues that the 14th Amendment was intended to apply only to children of those fully subject to U.S. jurisdiction—namely, citizens or lawful permanent residents—not to the children of temporary visa holders or undocumented immigrants. The administration is appealing a decision from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals, which rejected the executive order as an unconstitutional reinterpretation of settled law. This appeal marks the first time the Supreme Court is being asked to rule directly on the legality of such a restriction. In past cases, such as United States v. Wong Kim Ark (1898), the Court upheld citizenship for those born in the U.S. to noncitizen parents. Trump's team is also asking the Court to consider a related case brought by individual plaintiffs, even though it hasn't reached the appellate level, in hopes of securing a broad ruling.Trump Asks Supreme Court to Curb Birthright Citizenship (1) This is a public episode. What do the following people have in common: F. Lee Bailey, Richard “Alex” Murdaugh, Edward Snowden, Benedict Arnold, Pete Rose, Shoeless Joe Jackson, Tim Donaghy, Donald Sterling, and Ben Affleck? The quick answer is, in one way or another, they are all controversial figures. This list includes lawyers, political figures, athletes, an NBA owner, a referee, a military hero, and even an actor. So, what do these individuals have in common beyond being controversial? They have all, in one way or another, violated societal trust in ways that led to lifetime bans for their actions. The lawyers were disbarred for unethical practice, the athletes for gambling, the political and military figures for treason, and, yes, Ben Affleck received a lifetime ban from certain casinos for card counting while playing blackjack. Perhaps society may one day change its opinion and forgive them. Not so with the sin Jesus described in the passage we'll study today. Jesus addressed an astounded crowd, who had just witnessed Him miraculously cleanse a demon-possessed man. This dramatic event led to a broader conversation about sin, and one particular sin that would spark theological debate for centuries to come. What sin could be so horrible that God would not forgive it? The post THE GREATEST TRUTHS OF ALL TIME- The Greatest Sin (YOU-Fal'25, Study 1, Session 3) appeared first on YOU.

Send us a textThe streets have been talking, and Power Just is finally setting the record straight. In this raw, unfiltered conversation with LFTG Radio, Power exposes the dark underbelly of Staten Island's Park Hill neighborhood, where loyalty has become a forgotten virtue and federal informants walk freely among their victims. With unflinching directness, Power names the individuals he claims have cooperated with authorities and sent dozens of community members to prison with sentences ranging from 40 to 100 years. The most disturbing revelation isn't just who cooperated, but how they've maintained their presence in the neighborhood afterward. "These niggas keep making these meatball videos and this stupid ass shit, like they was in the loop in Park Hill," Power explains, referencing documentaries that misrepresent the neighborhood's true history while featuring individuals who betrayed their brothers.Power draws important distinctions between different generations of hustlers from Park Hill. He acknowledges those who "deserve their flowers" – the original generation that established the neighborhood's reputation and created opportunities. His anger is directed at those who've violated the code, particularly individuals like Deshawn from Park Hill and Muhammad Stewart (aka Tef), whom he accuses of wearing recording devices and betraying close friends. "My nigga's been sitting in fucking cells for 10 and 15 years because these disloyal dick-in-the-butt Benedict Arnold niggas was fucking playing Judas in the hood giving niggas up," he states with palpable frustration. The conversation serves as both warning and preview for Power's upcoming documentary "Kings of the Hill," which promises to expose the full truth with supporting documentation. Unlike other street narratives, Power insists his project will hold everyone accountable, regardless of status or affiliation. "I'm going in on everything," he declares, "You black balling niggas in the music industry. I'm going in on that. You niggas talking crazy and ain't had no cars, wasn't moving to work before the record deal. I'm going in."For those who want the unvarnished truth about Park Hill's street history, who really put in work, and who betrayed the community, this conversation offers a glimpse into the revelations to come. What if someone followed you around for a day—would they be convinced you're a follower of Christ? This question launches us into a soul-searching exploration of faith in action, both personally and nationally. The American Soul Podcast doesn't shy away from hard truths. As tensions escalate around immigration enforcement, with violence against ICE agents reportedly up 700%, we examine the concerning disconnect between political rhetoric and the safety of American communities. The silence from those who should speak out reveals much about our current national priorities.Drawing from 2 Corinthians 4, we find profound comfort for difficult times: "Momentary light affliction is producing for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison." Whether facing chronic illness, broken relationships, or the loss of loved ones, the Christian's hope extends beyond temporal struggles to eternal promises. The historical records tell a remarkable story. Yale President Ezra Stiles once cataloged the "indubitable interposition" of divine providence in American independence—unexpected military victories, critical weather patterns that thwarted British forces, and the timely discovery of Benedict Arnold's treason. Our founding generation recognized America wasn't blessed because of their superiority, but through God's mercy when they humbled themselves.Perhaps most sobering are the historical accounts of religious persecution that reveal why our ancestors risked everything for freedom. These serve as warnings against complacency in our own time, as ideological conflicts intensify between traditional American values and opposing worldviews. The patterns of history offer perspective for today's challenges. When you subscribe to the American Soul Podcast, you're joining a community that seeks wisdom from our past to navigate our present, always pointing toward an eternal perspective that transcends temporal conflicts.Support the showThe American Soul Podcasthttps://www.buzzsprout.com/1791934/subscribe

Eliot and Eric offer up candidates for jackassery of the week before turning to a discussion of The Fate of the Day: The War for America, Fort Ticonderoga to Charleston, 1777-1780, (New York: Crown, 2025) the second volume of journalist/historian Rick Atkinson's monumental military history of the American revolution. They discuss Atkinson's background as a military journalist for the Washington Post who has written books about the Gulf War, the Iraq War and covered other late 20th and 21st Century conflicts before turning his attention to writing a trilogy on the US Army in Europe during the Second World War and now the American Revolution.  They discuss the depth of his research in both archives in the U.S. and UK as well as his process for researching and writing these massive volumes (each of which has taken about 5-6 years to produce) and the decline of grand narrative history in the academy (despite the public demand for it). They consider how his own experience as a journalist affected his sense of the contingency of warfare and the fact that there are always tensions between the architects of war in capitals and the officers and troops on the ground. He explains how King George III and his ministers never understood the American drive for independence and were gripped by strategic misconceptions about how to fight the war, including the notion that there was a silent majority of North Americans who supported the monarchy despite the fact that the loyalists had mostly fled the colonies to Canada, the Caribbean or London. They discuss the star crossed career of Benedict Arnold, Washington's generalship at the Battle of Brandywine in Pennsylvania, and, finally, how Americans should think about the meaning of the American revolution today as we celebrate the sesquicentennial of the war for independence over the next 8 years. Brett then shifts to a conspiracy theory suggesting that President Joe Biden may not be fully in control of his administration, even implying impersonation. He draws a parallel between Biden’s leadership and major historical betrayals, like Benedict Arnold’s. We’re joined by Jeff Lord, journalist, TV and radio commentator, and author, to talk about President Biden’s mental fitness and the growing threat of radical violence in the U.S. Lord discusses recent concerns over the use of autopen signatures on official documents, raising questions about who is truly making decisions in the White House. They discuss Tocqueville's warnings of the detrimental effects of democracy on the citizen. We want to hear from you! Constitutionalistpod@gmail.com The Constitutionalist is proud to be sponsored by the Jack Miller Center for Teaching America's Founding Principles and History. For the last twenty years, JMC has been working to preserve and promote that tradition through a variety of programs at the college and K-12 levels. Through their American Political Tradition Project, JMC has partnered with more than 1,000 scholars at over 300 college campuses across the country, especially through their annual Summer Institutes for graduate students and recent PhDs. The Jack Miller Center is also working with thousands of K-12 educators across the country to help them better understand America's founding principles and history and teach them effectively, to better educate the next generation of citizens. JMC has provided thousands of hours of professional development for teachers all over the country, reaching millions of students with improved civic learning. If you care about American education and civic responsibility, you'll want to check out their work, which focuses on reorienting our institutions of learning around America's founding principles.
