Peter Soal gives us the up-beat on the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, Louis Botha by Richard Steyn. Philip Todres takes on a remarkable tome - Belonging - The story of the Jews 1492 - 1900’ by Simon Schama. Richard Theodore Greener (1844-1922) was a renowned black activist and scholar. He was the first black graduate of Harvard College, the first black faculty member at a southern white college, and the first black U.S. diplomat to a white country, serving in Vladivostok, Russia. Yet he died in obscurity, his name barely remembered.Because he was light-skinned and at ease among whites, Grenner's black friends and colleagues sometimes wrongfully accused him of trying to "pass." While he was overseas on a diplomatic mission, Greener's wife and five children did just that. They stayed in New York City, changed their names, and vanished into white society. Greener never saw them again.Katherine Reynolds Chaddock's Uncompromising Activist is a long overdue biography about a man, fascinating in his own right, who also exemplified America's discomfiting perspectives on race.Katherine Reynolds Chaddock is distinguished professor emerita of education at the University of South Carolina. In this feature, we ask, how do we talk about our relationships with our parents, with our kids? How can we open up on something so complex and which change so much over a lifetime? And can relationships be turned into art? Today you’ll hear how director Tamara Saulwick and composer Kate Neal are attempting to do just that, in a work called Permission to Speak. Producer Leah Blankendaal got to watch this process unfold.

This is the fifth episode of the Quimby's Bookstore Podcast, and we talk to Dave Roche and Cassie J. Sneider. They did an event together at Quimby's Bookstore when Cassie was touring with her book Fine, Fine Music. Cassie J. Sneider writes witty essays about growing up with an appreciation for classic rock like Aerosmith, Beverly Hills 90210, a pug she inherited, and various other topics. She describes her work as being "sort of like an X rated Judy Bloom." Her work is pretty awesome and hilarious. Also, she has lots of tattoos. Dave Roche is author of On Subbing and the zines About My Dissapperarance and Curse Journal, among others. He writes about things like his struggle with Crohn's Disease and being a substitute teacher. He is witty, charming and calls Bingo in footie pajamas. The books and zines we talk about in the podcast are available at Quimby's Bookstore at 1854 W. North Ave, in Chicago's Wicker Park neighborhood and on the web at quimbys.com.
