Today would have been the 91st birthday of our beloved Renata Scotto. On an episode last year celebrating the 100th birthday of Maria Callas, I remarked that Renatina possessed in profusion two qualities that Maria lacked: cuteness and charm. Both of those qualities are heard in these performances of Rossini songs, which range from 1964 to 1984 and include Scotto in both live and studio recordings. For the last forty years of his life, Gioachino Rossini, who had written scores of operas by the time he was 37, wrote no more works for the stage. But in those later years he did compose two collections of parlor pieces, one of which, the Soirées musicales, or Serate musicali, published in 1835, are heard on this episode. Ten of the twelve songs are heard here performed by Scotto. The episode is supplemented by one larger-scale late Rossini work, an 1832 cantata entitled Giovanna d'Arco which structurally amounts to an enormous operatic scena, performed by Scotto (and my beloved teacher John Wustman) to perfection in a rare live recording from Carnegie Hall in 1969. In addition, we hear a pristine 1959 excerpt from one of Scotto's earliest recordings, La cambiale di matrimonio. Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing. Academy Award®-nominated cinematographer Ed Lachman joins us to discuss his gorgeous cinematography on “Maria,” directed by Pablo Larraín. The seasoned director of photography shares his approach to blending formats — including 35mm, Super 8, and 16mm — to capture the operatic essence of Maria Callas's life, as well as his use of color psychology, lighting techniques, and period-specific film stocks to evoke emotion and authenticity."Opera and cinema are very similar… Opera's images are not representational either. Like cinema. And they create the subtext for the emotions of the story. And what helps to create the nonverbal form of communication is the same thing that happens in music of the opera. It's a heightened reality… I felt the film could be a representation if her life, mirrored in the operas that she sang in. And even though people say she was the sum of the tragedies of the opera she sang, I believe she had the resistance and strength to overcome." —Ed Lachman, Director of Photography, “Maria”Be sure to check out “Maria,” now streaming on Netflix, in Dolby Vision® and Dolby Atmos®.Please subscribe to Dolby Creator Talks wherever you get your podcasts. You can also check out the video for this episode.Learn more about the Dolby Creator Lab and check out Dolby.com. A Psychoanalytic Reflection on Narcissistic Parenthood and its Ramifications: The Forgotten Echo (Routledge, 2024) proposes a new perspective on narcissism, focusing on its destructive impact within relationships. Psychoanalyst and psychiatrist Hila Yahalom discusses the patterns and ramifications of traumatizing upbringing by narcissistic parents, exploring the resulting development of a defensive-behavioral pattern and personality structures in the child which constitutes a mirror image of narcissism. Yahalom assesses a wide range of psychoanalytic theories in presenting a broad outlook on narcissism, its roots, and the manner by which pathological narcissism may manifest in interpersonal relationships as ‘narcissistic abuse'. This book considers the narcissist's perverted occupation of the psychic space of others, with both participants usually blind to the phenomenon – a blindness that is reenacted in therapy, affecting its course. This book contains clinical vignettes from the author's work as well as examples from the life stories of Heinz Kohut (Mr. Z), Franz Kafka, and Maria Callas. Holy cats! In Part Eight of the series, we arrive at Aristotle's second marriage to Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy. It is not exactly a blessed occasion, and no one is happy about it, except Ari's sister Artemis, who makes a big comeback in this episode. Everyone else in Ari's life, including his mistress Maria Callas, and his children all have a whole lot of feelings about grand affair. Jackie's sister and mother also have very strong feelings, which they do not hold back. The whole Kennedy clan is none too pleased either, even though Teddy will step up to negotiate the marriage contract. Calamity abounds in this one – take cover and enjoy the show!  Want early, ad-free episodes, regular Dumpster Dives, bonus divorces, limited series, Zoom hangouts, and more?
