Een Betrouwbare Bronnen-aflevering opgenomen in het Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, samen met het Arethusa Quartet. Een experiment: hoe kun je de identiteit van Betrouwbare Bronnen op een ongebruikelijke, eigenzinnige wijze vertolken? In veel afleveringen van deze podcast klinkt steeds weer door hoe politiek, kunst, tradities, inspiratie, muziek en de macht van heersers toen en nu met elkaar verbonden zijn. En soms grootse, maar vaak fatale prestaties opleveren. In een live-uitvoering vertellen we met de musici van het Arethusa Quartet het verhaal van de grote componist Dmitri Sjostakovitsj (1906 - 1975) in dit herdenkingsjaar. In zijn leven en werk werden zijn strijkkwartetten het ‘intiem, geheim dagboek’, vertelt Daniel Rowland, eerste violist van 'Arethusa'. Zijn muzikaal genie, zijn inspiratie, angsten, wanhoop, liefde, verzet en triomfgevoelens kon hij daarin voluit laten klinken. Jaap Jansen en PG Kroeger verkennen hoe leven, politiek, muziek en noodlot bij Sjostakovitsj samen kwamen. Elke grote revolutie had immers zijn Beethoven nodig, dus ook deze rode. In elk repertoire schitterde hij. Zijn filmmuziek sleepte heel de Sovjet-Unie mee, zijn optimistische koren en ballades waren uitermate populair. Tegelijkertijd zag Lenin al hoe machtig film als propagandamiddel kon zijn. Politiek, heerschappij en muziek raakten meteen verstrikt. Stalin werd in 1928 alleenheerser en protegeerde de jonge musicus. Meer en meer werd Sjostakovitsj helder hoezeer privilege en gunsten van de tiran ook een gifpil waren. Het was een vloek. Een kooi met gouden tralies. In 1936 begonnen Stalins moorddadige zuiveringen. Sjostakovitsj werd symbool van die repressie toen zijn bejubelde opera 'Lady Macbeth van Mtsensk' in partijkrant de Pravda veroordeeld werd en hij voor zijn leven vreesde. Daniel Rowland vertelt aangrijpend welke doodsangsten beroemde kunstenaars in deze jaren dag en nacht beleefden. Maar toen Adolf Hitler in juni 1941 Operatie Barbarossa begon had Stalin zijn kunstenaars weer hard nodig. Zij moesten het volk bemoedigen en de grootse cultuur van Rusland naar het westen doen schitteren. Sjostakovitsj deed zijn patriottische plicht. Na de overwinning op Nazi-Duitsland was de stank voor dank van de tiran ongekend. Golven van repressie, hongersnood en een nieuwe zuivering maakten Sjostakovitsj wanhopig. Een nieuwe cultuurcampagne van de paranoïde heerser bracht hem aan de afgrond van leven en dood. Het Arethusa Quartet vertolkt de muziek waarin hij zijn wanhoop en levensmoed durfde te uiten. Stalins dood in 1953 betekende een soort dooi, maar de componist bleef doodsbenauwd en tegelijk moedig voor anderen die vervolgd werden. Nu moest hij de triomfen laten klinken van de Sovjet-Unie als wereldmacht in wording – nu met de Spoetnik-satelliet! Zijn leven kreeg een late zonnegloed door de liefde van en voor zijn Irina. Daniel Rowland vertelt over zijn bijzondere contact met haar en hoe zij het muzikale motto 'pom - pom - pom' voor hem ontraadselde. in 1974 schreef Dmitri Sjostakovitsj zijn laatste strijkkwartet in het besef dat zijn leven voorbij was. Het was zijn eigen requiem voor een bestaan waarin schoonheid, gruwelen en hoop zijn levenslot waren. Jerome Charyn is the award-winning author of more than fifty works of fiction and nonfiction. Today we'll talk with him about his new book about opera singer Maria Callas titled, "Maria, La Divina."

Το πέρασμα της Μαρίας Κάλλας από αυτόν τον κόσμο άλλαξε για πάντα το συμπαν του λυρικού τραγουδιού και δημιούργησε ένα νέο αισθητικό περιβάλλον από το οποίο κάνεις μέχρι σήμερα δεν θέλησε να δραπετεύσει. Η Μαρία ήταν και παραμένει το όριο. Η Μαρία Κάλλας ήταν μια επιβλητική παρουσία. Ήταν ψηλή, είχε πελώρια, εκφραστικά καστανά μάτια με τα οποία κάρφωνε ό,τι ήθελε να μαγνητίσει. Tο πρόσωπό της ακτινοβολούσε όταν γελούσε και η φωνή της, εκτός σκηνής, είχε μια ευγένεια και μια συστολή. Τα χέρια της, που μικρή δεν ήξερε τι να τα κάνει, μεγαλώνοντας αποφάσισε να τα εντάξει στα εκφραστικά της εργαλεία κι έγιναν κι αυτά ένα ακόμα χαρακτηριστικό της στη σκηνή. Δεν ξεπέρασε ποτέ το σύμπλεγμα με τα στρουμπουλά της πόδια αλλά όταν συμφιλιώθηκε με τον εαυτό της και το βάρος της μεταμορφώθηκε σε μια λυγερή φιγούρα, που ως πρότυπο κομψότητας είχε την Όντρεϊ Χέμπορν. Εσωτερικά τώρα η συμφιλίωση δεν ήρθε ποτέ. H μεγάλη οικογενειακή πληγή δεν επουλώθηκε. H Mαρία Κάλλας μεγάλωσε πιστεύοντας πως ήταν «ασχημόπαπο, παχουλή, άχαρη, καθόλου δημοφιλής» και έζησε αναπαράγοντας σε όλες της τις σχέσεις τα οικογενειακά τραύματα. Ο πατέρας ήταν αδιάφορος και διαρκώς απών. Η μητέρα ανταγωνιστική, καταπιεστική, αχόρταγη και πανταχού παρούσα. Γεμάτη ματαιώσεις και χωρίς ισχυρούς οικογενειακούς δεσμούς, η Μαρία Καλλας πορευόταν σχεδόν μόνη, με μια αυτοκαταστροφική τόλμη και μια δύναμη παροιμιώδη που ποτέ δεν καταλάβαμε από που την αντλούσε. 100 χρόνια πέρασαν από την γέννηση αυτού του φωνητικού θαύματος, της γυναίκας που έδωσε το φιλί της ζωής στην όπερα, που δημιουργούσε με τις παραστάσεις της παγκόσμιο συναγερμό, που έβγαινε στη σκηνή δεκάδες φορές προσπαθώντας να κατευνάσει το κοινό που την αποθέωνε. Στην Αμερική την υποδέχονταν σαν ροκ σταρ, ενώ, στο Μιλάνο λόγω της παθολογικης της σχέσης με την Σκάλα οι αντιδράσεις του κοινού συχνά ξεπερνούσαν τα όρια. Οι δημοσιογράφοι γέμιζαν σελίδες με ένα νεύμα της, οι φωτογραφίες της φυλάσσονταν ως ιερά κειμήλια, οι δίσκοι της αποκτούσαν φετιχιστικές διαστάσεις. Κι εκείνη έτρεχε. Η Μαρία Κάλλας ήρθε για πρώτη φορά στην Ελλάδα το 1937, βίαια αποκομμένη από τη γενέτειρά της, τη Νέα Υόρκη. Μαζί της είχε τρία καναρίνια, δώρο του πατέρα της, τα λιγοστά, φτωχικά της υπάρχοντα, τα άχαρα ρούχα της, τις φιλοδοξίες, τις δικές της και κυρίως της μαμάς της, η οποία διψούσε για κοινωνική καταξίωση, και τις εφηβικές αγωνίες μιας κοπέλας που δεν είχε εισπράξει αγάπη ως τότε. Στη Νέα Υόρκη έχει αφήσει τον αγαπημένο της πατέρα, κάποιους λίγους οικογενειακούς φίλους, τις διενέξεις των γονιών της, που κλόνιζαν τη συμβίωσή τους, και το μικρό πιάνο στο σαλόνι, όπου έμαθε τις πρώτες νότες. Αυτό το κοριτσάκι, που αρκετά χρόνια μετά θα μεταμορφωνόταν στην κορυφαία σοπράνο, έζησε στην Αθήνα την προσωπική και καλλιτεχνική της ενηλικίωση εν μέσω σκληρών κοινωνικών και πολιτικών συνθηκών, σε ένα περιβάλλον που της επιφύλαξε φτώχεια, προσωπική ταπείνωση, συναισθηματική αστάθεια, αλλά συγχρόνως υπήρξε καθοριστικό για τη μετέπειτα πορεία της. Φωτίζοντας, λοιπόν, την περίοδο αυτή, διαπιστώνουμε πως η Μαρία που έλαμψε στα πέρατα του κόσμου, για τα μαθητικά της χρόνια, για την όποια εκπαιδευτική επάρκεια είχε και για τα πρώιμα καλλιτεχνικά της επιτεύγματα, ευγνωμονούσε την Αθήνα, την πόλη στην οποία άρχισε σιγά σιγά να εξωτερικεύει το θείο δώρο που έκρυβε μέσα της. Εκατό χρόνια πέρασαν από τη γέννηση αυτού του φωνητικού θαύματος και είναι πολλά αυτά που μας αποκαλύπτει η έρευνα για την οκταετή περίοδο που περιπλανήθηκε στους δρόμους της πόλης μας. Οι αθηναϊκές της διαδρομές πέριξ κυρίως της Πατησίων και της Ομόνοιας μεταμόρφωσαν αυτή την άχαρη και άκομψη πιτσιρίκα που συστήθηκε στο Εθνικό Ωδείο ως Μαριάννα Καλογεροπούλου σε μαθήτρια-πρότυπο που «μελετούσε πέντε με έξι ώρες την ημέρα», στη σπουδάστρια που «τραγουδούσε τις πιο δύσκολες άριες του διεθνούς οπερατικού ρεπερτορίου πριν κλείσει τα 14», στο 15χρονο κορίτσι που με το εφηβικό του ανάστημα ερμήνευσε «Τόσκα» το 1938 στην πρώτη συναυλία της ζωής του, στη νεαρή τραγουδίστρια που υπέγραψε το πρώτο της επαγγελματικό συμβόλαιο με την Εθνική Λυρική Σκηνή τον Ιούνιο του 1940, στην κορυφαία σοπράνο του 20ού αιώνα που συστήνεται ως Μαίρη Κάλλας το 1945. Η μυθιστορηματική ζωή της Κάλλας κινούνταν πάντα στο μεταίχμιο μεταξύ τραγωδίας και θριάμβου κι αν κάτι αναδεικνύεται από την «ελληνική» της οκταετία είναι ότι αυτό το κορίτσι υπήρξε ένα ανεπανάληπτο παράδειγμα θέλησης, ταλέντου, εργατικότητας, αφοσίωσης και ταυτόχρονα μια προσωπικότητα που εν μέσω δυσκολιών αντιστάθηκε με παροιμιώδη δύναμη και γενναιότητα σε κάθε δυσκολία και κακοποιητική συμπεριφορά. Μιλούν: Γιώργος Κουμεντάκης - Καλλιτεχνικός διευθυντής ΕΛΣΈλενα Ματθαιοπούλου - Δημοσιογράφος, δημόσια ομιλήτρια και συγγραφέαςΒασίλης Λουρας - Δημιουργός του νέου ντοκιμαντέρ «Μαίρη, Μαριάννα, Μαρία: Τα άγνωστα ελληνικά χρόνια της Κάλλας»Άρης Χριστοφέλλης - Λυρικός καλλιτέχνης, μουσικολόγος και μελετητής του έργου της ΚάλλαςΈρευνα - παρουσίαση: Ματούλα Κουστένη Πηγές - Βιβλιογραφία:«Η άγνωστη Κάλλας», Νίκος Πετσάλης-Διομήδης (Εκδόσεις Καστανιώτη)«Μαρία Κάλλας, η ελληνική σταδιοδρομία της», Πολύβιος Μαρσάν (Εκδόσεις Γνώση)«Μαρία Κάλλας: Οι μεταμορφώσεις μιας τέχνης», Βασίλης Χ. Όταν η Μαρία Καλλας ανέβαινε στη σκηνή, ήταν απόλυτα υποταγμένη στον συνθέτη. Ο πρωταρχικός σκοπός ήταν ένας: να μεταμορφωθεί στην εκάστοτε ηρωίδα και να βιώσει το δραματικό πεπρωμένο της. Η κορυφαία τραγουδίστρια του 20ού αιώνα όμως δεν έδωσε μόνο φωνή στις παρτιτούρες. Αγάπησε βαθιά τις γυναίκες που τραγούδησε και υποδύθηκε. Ταυτίστηκε μαζί τους σε τέτοιο βαθμό που ακόμα και σήμερα, 100 χρόνια από τη γέννησή της, πανεπιστήμια σε όλον τον κόσμο ερευνούν την ψυχοπαθολογία της σχέσης που ανέπτυξε μαζί τους. Η απλοϊκή εξήγηση είναι ότι οι σκοτεινές περιοχές της φωνής της Κάλλας ταυτίστηκαν ανατριχιαστικά με τις σκοτεινές προσωπικότητες της όπερας κι έτσι οδήγησαν το εκφραστικό εύρος του λυρικού τραγουδιού σε αδιανόητα ύψη. In De Perstribune ontvangt presentator Pieter van der Wielen deze week operazangeres Francis van Broekhuizen en journalist Frits Barend. Al sinds eind jaren zestig is Frits Barend actief als journalist en sportjournalist in Nederland. Samen met Henk van Dorp maakte hij de sportjournalistiek wat minder braaf, bijvoorbeeld met toonaangevende interviews in Vrij Nederland en het radioprogramma Tussen Barend en Van Dorp. Later schudde hij de talkshowwereld op met het toonzettende Barend & Van Dorp en Villa BVD. En gaf hij de bladenmarkt een impuls met zijn sporttijdschrift Helden. Tegenwoordig zit Barend nog steeds aan de talkshowtafels, maar dan vooral als duider van al het nieuws – van de nieuwe nummer tien van Ajax tot de Franse erkenning van de Palestijnse staat – Barend draait zijn hand er niet voor om.

Cyndi Lauper is a multi-award winning singer and songwriter. She has sold more than fifty million records, won an Emmy for acting and her musical Kinky Boots earned her a Tony and an Oliver award. Born in 1953, Cyndi grew up in a blue collar neighbourhood in New York. Her mother loved music and art and took her children to free exhibitions in New York which inspired Cyndi. As a very young girl, Cyndi listened to her mother's extensive record collection and mimicked the voices she heard from musicals and operas.After a difficult family home life due to her mother's turbulent marriages, Cyndi found solace in music and began writing songs when she was ten. She left home at seventeen determined to make it in the music industry. She started out as a singer in bands, whilst supporting herself doing a series of jobs. Early in her career, she lost her voice for almost a year after trying to make herself heard over amps which were too loud. Success eventually came when she released her debut solo album She's So Unusual in 1983 – the first album by a female artist to spawn four consecutive US Top 5 singles.Cyndi lives in New York with her husband, David who is an actor. Today would have been the 91st birthday of our beloved Renata Scotto. On an episode last year celebrating the 100th birthday of Maria Callas, I remarked that Renatina possessed in profusion two qualities that Maria lacked: cuteness and charm. Both of those qualities are heard in these performances of Rossini songs, which range from 1964 to 1984 and include Scotto in both live and studio recordings. For the last forty years of his life, Gioachino Rossini, who had written scores of operas by the time he was 37, wrote no more works for the stage. But in those later years he did compose two collections of parlor pieces, one of which, the Soirées musicales, or Serate musicali, published in 1835, are heard on this episode. Ten of the twelve songs are heard here performed by Scotto. The episode is supplemented by one larger-scale late Rossini work, an 1832 cantata entitled Giovanna d'Arco which structurally amounts to an enormous operatic scena, performed by Scotto (and my beloved teacher John Wustman) to perfection in a rare live recording from Carnegie Hall in 1969. In addition, we hear a pristine 1959 excerpt from one of Scotto's earliest recordings, La cambiale di matrimonio. The head of the World Health Organisation has told the BBC that it was public knowledge he was in Yemen on Thursday when Israel launched airstrikes on Houthi targets. What a week! In this latest installment of Onassis and his lovely ladies, we return the focus back to Christina, and her doomed marriage to Joseph Bolker, mostly because Aristotle wants it that way.
