11/13/24 - Fr. Stefano Gobbi was born in Dongo (province of Como, Italy) on March 22, 1930. He was ordained a priest in 1964 and belonged to the Company of Saint Paul. The focal point of his life occurred on May 8, 1972 during a pilgrimage to Fatima. While praying at the “Capelinha”, the Chapel of the Apparitions, the Virgin Mary distinctly spoke to him in the form of what Christian spiritual theology defines as “interior locutions.” Mary invited him to gather together his brother priests who would welcome the idea of consecrating themselves to Her Immaculate Heart, and of being deeply united with the Holy Father and the Church united to him. Fr. Gobbi asked Our Lady for a sign confirming this request, a sign which he received that same month at the Basilica of the Annunciation in Nazareth. On October 13, 1972, he and two other priests launched the MMP (Marian Movement of Priests), which has spread to the five continents and has seen Fr. Gobbi travel the whole world for meetings of prayer and fraternity called “cenacles”.
Unless by some miracle you know him already, the Swedish baritone Hugo Hasslo (1911 – 1994), is almost certainly the greatest baritone you never heard of. I discovered him entirely by accident years ago when Tower Records was going out of business and I, like a jackal picking the carcass of an unfortunate water buffalo, grabbed up scads of opera and vocal CDs that other customers / scavengers had passed over. The second that I heard Hasslo's voice, I knew I had discovered vocal gold. Initially it was the voice that impressed me the most: clarion yet dark-timbred, solid from bass-baritonal low range to an almost Heldentenor-like top (I was later to discover that Hasslo had dabbled in tenor repertoire, going so far as to sing Cavaradossi on stage!) But it was when I discovered a live 1959 recording of Hasslo singing the title role of Rigoletto with his home company, the Royal Swedish Opera, that I encountered his true greatness: here was a Rigoletto that combined the sheer animal power of a Bastianini with the dramatic insight of a Gobbi with an unmatched humanity and compassion for the character. And to think that, with few exceptions, his career, like that of a handful of other Swedish baritones from that era, was based almost entirely in Sweden, and at the Royal Opera, where he sang from 1940 to 1964. Here is a baritone considered by many cognoscenti to be perhaps the finest Swedish baritone that ever lived, a compleat artist, represented however by only a smattering of studio, live, and television recordings, which it is my honor to share with you. Welcome to the Hugo Hasslo Fan Club! Countermelody is a podcast devoted to the glory and the power of the human voice raised in song. Singer and vocal aficionado Daniel Gundlach explores great singers of the past and present focusing in particular on those who are less well-remembered today than they should be. Daniel's lifetime in music as a professional countertenor, pianist, vocal coach, voice teacher, and journalist yields an exciting array of anecdotes, impressions, and “inside stories.” At Countermelody's core is the celebration of great singers of all stripes, their instruments, and the connection they make to the words they sing.

Two years ago last month, the great French (bass-)baritone Gabriel Bacquier died just four days short of his 96th birthday. At that time I offered a brief memorial tribute which opened my eyes to aspects of his artistry and voice with which I had been previously unfamiliar. Like his near-contemporary, the Italian baritone Tito Gobbi, Bacquier was one of the supreme actors of the operatic stage, whose voice coarsened somewhat over the course of his long career, even as his mastery as an actor and interpreter increased. By the time he retired, his repertoire consisted almost entirely of buffo parts. But in the earliest years of his career (and also like Gobbi), he possessed a baritone of velvety beauty that might surprise those who know only his later comic roles. This episode, which commemorates the second anniversary of Bacquier's death as well as his (posthumous) 98th birthday, focuses on the three different musical genres in which, in those early years, from 1953 through 1968, he excelled in equal measure: opera, of course, but also mélodie and operetta. The operatic portrayals represented include the title roles in Don Giovanni and Orphée et Eurydice; Zurga in Les Pêcheurs de perles; the Count in Le nozze di Figaro; Iago in Otello; Golaud; and his incomparable Scarpia, which he sang opposite every great Tosca of the 1960s with the exception of Callas. Complementing these live and studio recordings are recordings of melodies by Duparc, Fauré, Debussy, Ravel, and Poulenc; and operetta arias by Sigmund Romberg, Franz Lehár, Johann Strauss II, and Reynaldo Hahn, all deliciously sung in French. Vocal guest stars include Mirella Freni; Alain Vanzo; Bernard Demigny; Janine Ervil; Yvonne Gall, with whom Bacquier studied at the Conservatoire de Paris; and the late Renate Holm, the renowned German soubrette who died in April at the age of 90. In all this repertoire, Bacquier, who insisted on the appellation “acting singer” rather than “singing actor,” displays his commitment to clear yet full projection of text, which serves as a mirror into the music and not the other way around. The journey of a senior iOS software engineer launching his personal project while working in Silicon Valley for Google and Twitter. IPTVX, the app to watch your digital content, Movies, Shows and Live Streaming with style!
I spoke with Luca Gobbi. Luca is VP of Software Engineering for a startup called Medchart in Toronto. He doesn't like talking a lot about himself, but I'm thankful he made an exception for us. I was looking forward to exploring Luca's community involvement with tech meetups. He is part of the organizing team for 2 meetup groups in Toronto. Both of them, Microsoft .NET related. We have talked about his motivations for being involved with these meetups, how he got started, and why people like you and me should consider joining a tech meet up. He shared the store about an organizer who was stepping down and he didn't think twice before volunteering to becoming the new organizer without even realizing what kind of work was involved. We also discussed the work he does for Medchart and the challenges of being a team leader in time of remote work and COVID-19. And if you are interested in working for a tech startup, Luca shared a great strategy to get yourself noticed by them. Full show notes and links: https://SoloCoder.com/39
